The sheriff's department called a deadly serious press conference in which they asked the help of the public in identifying the perpetrator. The lady was wearing a white cap, red shorts and a black bikini top. Witnesses in the area, the sheriff said in a statement, took photographs and contacted police. The Tampa Bay Times reports that police quickly called a news conference and described the gathering as "slightly surreal in its gravity." The paper adds: "Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri held a news conference to decry the alleged abuse of an animal he called 'a huge part of our culture here in Florida' and 'a very integral part of what Florida is about.' ... "'Go ride a Jet Ski. Don't use animals,' the sheriff said. 'She needs to be held accountable for her actions.'" Under Florida law molesting or annoying a manatee is a second degree misdemeanor. Having grown up in the state, I can attest manatees are pretty much sacred. They're endangered and without any natural predators the sea cows are not afraid of humans. "It's a wild animal. It's not something to be ridden," Susan Butler, a manatee expert with the U.S. Geological Survey in Gainesville, told the Times. "I can't say that as a biologist I would ever, ever condone that, or say that (the manatee) wanted them to do that." But fear not, the public relations blitz yielded results. The sheriff's office said that hours after releasing the pictures to the public, 52-year-old Ana Gloria Garcia Gutierrez turned herself in to police. "Deputies met with Gutierrez at her residence and questioned her regarding the reported events," the sheriff said in a statement. "Gutierrez admitted to the offense claiming she is new to the area and did not realize it was against the law to touch or harass manatees. Deputies further explained the law regarding manatees and the possible penalties for violating such laws." The charges have been referred to the state attorney's office for prosecution.

Serious question ....... If the sea cows are not afraid of humans, then isn't it possible that they think that this is just play .... and maybe they actually enjoy it? Seriously. Dogs love playing fetch, even though some might argue that it is cruel to keep taking the stick away from the poor dog and throwing it so he has to go chase it down.  Now I have no way of knowing how the sea cows feel about this whole situation. Maybe they don't want a bikini clad 52 year old riding them ...... but a bikini clad 19 year old .........?  lol I have to admit that the line "Go ride a Jet Ski. Don't use animals" did get a laugh out of me.

It really doesn't look like she molested the sea cow. How can they prove she annoyed it?

In Florida the maximum amount of jail time for a 2nd degree misdemeanor is 60 days, and the maximum fine is $500. (This is what she is charged with though we don't yet know her sentence)
Frankly I don't care about the manatees. I suspect their meat tastes more like fish than cow.

Yes but I was so much younger them and far more prone to such mistakes.

But it's OK to ride a horse, or a small kid to ride on a large dog, or a trainer to ride a dolphin.
Who determines which animals we are allowed to ride/interact with?
I have been around manatees in the wild and they will come right up to you (scare the bejesus out of you when they sneak up without you noticing), they seem to love the interaction and the one I was by absolutly LOVED being petted, like a dog or cat arching it's back while being scrathed.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

The difference is whether an animal is wild or tame. If you want to ride a wild horse or dolphin or put a small kid on a large wild dog, uhhhh, be my guest . . .
But you're right about manatees. If I were to try to ride a wild animal it would be one of those. Gentle as all get out and being submersed in water they could easily support my 265 lb fat bee-hind . . .

People ride bulls and pigs that definitely don't want to be ridden.. I seriously doubt a horse really enjoys having a 200 lb guy sitting on its back.
I guess I can see why there has to be some regulation because if manatees are that friendly, it probably would get out of control... but I look at it this way, if you aren't hurting hte animal, I don't care... but if the animal drags you to the bottom and you drown or drags you into a host of gators and you become lunch... well then it just sucks to be you, don't expect a huge amount of sympathy from me.

hmmm nobody claims that she molested it, and I think her lawyer could argue that there is no proof that it was annoyed. Verdict not guilty.
I'm just glad she didn't try to ride Ted Williams head.
