http://www.wtam.com/cc-common/podcast/single_podcast.html?podcast=willsandcoleman.xmlAnother weekly conversation with Savage. Talks about OTA's,and the participation. Winslow rumor is not true, he never heard anything to the contrary of him not being ready for training camp. Gary Baxter is rehabbing very well. Said he is on the eliptical and treadmill and to look at him you would not think anything is wrong with him. Bentley is rehabbing and trying to regain his strength. Working on the sleds. Still trying to determine if he is going to have another surgery. Would occur in May if he does. Mack being hired by the organization to help the players with more off the field issues and minimal on the field issues. He wasn't hired to be a RB coach. Quinn's workout today. Savage was not attending because he was not throwing today, just running. We did send a representative though. Doesn't feel that the first pick is a make or break situation for the Browns. Only 3 players still on the team from Davis' reign. Davis, Pontbriand, Thompson. Thought that he would have possibly been able to turn the franchise around faster, but there were more problems than met the eye on the surface. It was a long term project and that they are trying to build it the right way. Just another weekly chat that doesn't give us too much info on the draft. Said that it's funny how people try to say who the Brown's are hot on because the scouts meet for 9 days prior to the combine and won't meet again until April 9th. The draft board hasn't changed since before the combine. Makes you think about all the speculation and rumors that say the Brown's focus is changing from player to player. You just don't know what to believe.

it means that all of the rejoicing about him hitting sleds is premature. It tells us something, but not much and definitely nowhere near enough to get worked up over.
the big question I want answered is this: Is the decision to be made "Does he indeed need another surgery?" or is it "he needs the surgery, but he's trying to determine whether or not to d it now or after 2007?" To me, there is a HUGE difference in there that the listed statement does not cover.

It means LeCharles is still trying to determine if he is going to have another surgury. It's up to him. If he has it he will not play in '07. If he doesn't have it, he could possibly return at sometime in the '07 season.
At least that's what I think it means.

That's not right unless I'm misunderstanding what it says.
What about Winslow, Bodden, Roye, Jones, Tucker, etc. ?

Don't kid yourself, Davis was a cancer for this team. Savage is the goods. The coaching on the otherhand...

Was typing as I listened to it. Sorry. What he said was those are the only 3 left on the team that were drafted by the Browns from '99 to '03.

LOL.....talk to me when one of his players leads us to a winning record. Until then he's just Butch with a better haircut.

Well then, in that case ok.

Why is he Butch when his two years of drafting and free agency had no pre-existing core of players worthy to build around?

i think it's more about building a 3-4 defense... you don't just start from scratch and get good solid players right away... it takes time to develop that kind of a defense, romeo had to scrap an entire defense and start all over...
i thought baxter was off the team?
and i thought bentley had already stated that he is not playing in '07?

And Butch did? C'mon, I know most of you guys despise Butch but let's call a spade a spade, here. Butch still is the only coach since '99 with at least one winning season. So he's not quite the turd you experts make him out to be.

A winning season using the players from the previous regime. When he cleaned house to get "his" guys in is when we went downhill.

I think it's quite clear really.
Al Lerner was what was turning us around.
He died and we fell apart. Hell, even Butch fell apart.
Without Al we are nothing.

We haven't had a coach with a winning record (overall) since Marty left. All those guys idiots, too? Give Butch a break. He wasn't the Anti-Christ. And had we kept him and gotten a GM like Phil after that season (2004) I'd be willing to bet we'd be further along now than we actually are.
Look, it's useless to argue about Butch or his abilities. Let's just say I respect his abilities more than you do.

there's no doubt we'd be farther along. If nothing else we wouldn't have had to turn over the entire roster in changing offenses and defenses.

Hell, if you really think about it, who could we have kept on offense or defense that was worthy, even if we'd kept the same systems?
Warren? Lang? Myers? Ekuban? Green? Suggs? Couch? Holcomb? KJ? Friz? Dropcutt? Thompson? Taylor? Brown? 'Cutch? Griffith? Shelton? Faine?
Same systems or different, Savage had to reinvent the entire roster.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

that's a crock, Butch needed control and he wanted to bring in his guys and when he got the chance he failed, miserably. He was definitely a turd.

Butch is much better off now, coaching at a power house college program like North Carolina.

You laugh at this but Butch will probably make that program pretty good if he sticks with it. You look at the Miami players he recruited and there were so many studs it was rediculous. Butch is a great college coach and expect his team to improve bigtime. Watch Paulos's brother turn out to be a pretty succesful QB for the Tarheels. And i hate UNC, but Butch will def turn that program around if he sticks with it.

No, it's not a crock. It's a different opinion than yours. That does not make it a crock. I realize it's a minority opinion on this board to say Butch wasn't the reason we're a crappy team. But that doesn't make it wrong.

Do you remember how Butch built that team? We had to shed players like crazy because of the cap after that season. There's a right way, which takes longer, and a wrong way, which is what Davis did.
If you like the quick fix which creates problems later, then by all means, advocate what Butch did.

Baxter..I really wonder about that..double ruptures and you wouldn't notice? Yeah... Bentley..people if you cross him off for 07, you won't be disappointed by anything that happens..
Doesn't feel that the first pick is a make or break situation for the Browns. I tend to over analyze..to me that means if they trade down they don't feel they've lost out on a impact player..or if they stay pat, they have several players who fit ..not one.

What does this mean?
It means what I said on the boards the other day. We will know more about LCB AFTER the draft

I'm slightly more hopeful about Bent's 2007 return that I was before reading this. I kept envisioning LCB still walking around with a cane or something.
I'm trying not to be too optimistic because I don't want to be disappointed, but it'd be huge if he could play this year. We deserve some good luck for a change.

I'm going to answer this by assuming that you didn't listen to the segment yourself. This was Savage's answer after he was told of the statement made by Lerner that "This is a make or break year for ownership" meaning that he felt that we need to win more and put a better product on the field. Savage was asked if he felt the same about the first pick. Is it a make or break pick. I think he was saying that the pick really didn't need to be a homerun and such an immediate difference maker.

RAC doesn't really play that many rookies anyways.... so I'm not surprised

RAC plays plenty of rookies.
RAC plays rookies all the time.
The correct and accurrate phrase you were looking for is "Not many rookies are able to earn playing time".
