Looking for a free Antivirus program, I'm so tired of McAfee and it slowing down my 2 computers. It's always running scans, even though I turn them off. Always prompting for this and that even though I havent had any problems with any viruses. Thanks in advance.

I use Avast. It's free and I don't have any problems with it.

I have been using AVG for 4 or 5 years now. It's fast, doesn't use a ton of resources, updates automatically, and is free. (if you choose the freeware option) http://free.avg.com/us-en/homepage

When I had a PC I mixed Avira Anti-Virus with Malware Bytes. Avast or Avira are both good. I'd just mix Malware Bytes with them. Run that Malware Bytes once every two weeks or something (quick scan) and you have another very good virus protector.
But when I had a PC, I mix of Avira with Malware Bytes gave me great protection. No problems.
All the programs I've mentioned are free and don't use the memory on your computer that McAfee does. I think Avast and Avira are better than McAfee too.
McAfee is a total rip-off

Just downloaded Avast on both my computers, run full scans on both, no infected files on either one. Just have one question, I've looked everywhere, maybe I'm stupid but I can't find the schedule to run a scan while at work or sleep.
Thanks guys, hope this helps out.

I know you can do this with Avira. I used to run Avira scans at around 2AM on a random week day.
Now that I remember it though, a few ads pop up a day (to make it free). And looking at reviews of it on CNET, some people are complaining about the updated version.
But, try it out if you want, I know it has scan schedule thing

AVG scans every day on a schedule, and updates on a schedule as well.

I don't think you can with Avast. I run Avast, Spybot and Adaware....Many times I just start a scan before I turn in for the night with each of these programs (different days, not simultaneously) and deal with the report when I get up.

You might also check with your ISP. Some of them provide free AV software to their customers.

Open up Avast, click scan computer, decide which scan you want then make sure you click the little arrow on the right that says "more details", then on the lower right side click settings, then in the left upper corner it gives you a list just click on scheduling and there ya go.

I've been using Avast for years and never knew you could do that. Thanks!

As an added bonus....create another account on your computer without administrative access / control on your computer and use that account for browsing the internet. It helps since it has limited privileges to make changes to the system just in case you hit a rogue porn site.

Surfing while on a NON-Admin account is very good advice.
MalwareBytes is the best. However, the free version offers zero protection, it is a remover only. If you are going to scan, use the Full Scan. Otherwise, don't bother.
I have used both Avira and Avast a few times. Both had an unusually high incidence of problems, requiring a free service call. Will NOT use either again.
AVG has a very low incidence of problems, over hundreds of installs. I would not call it fast or low on resource usage, however.
A very valuable prog not yet mentioned is CCleaner. Not specifically an anti-virus prog, but its file cleanup and registry cleanup are VERY useful in preventing re-installs of a virus. Also gives a moderate speed-up for general usage. Also a very low incidence of causing problems, as in never in my experience.
Another little prog you should have is called RKill. Stops virus processes so that a cleanup can be attempted. Get the ".com" version, many viruses interfere with any ".exe" program.
