Oh I don't neccesarily know about that..Here's an idea that was mentioned to me 2 weeks ago.. I'll keep the suggester private for now. Just a name in the hat right now..

Brad Seely

AHC / ST here and San Fran. ST guys are generally decent coaches.

I've been on record saying how I hated us getting rid of him and how he's a great coach. I'd love to have Brad Seely as our HC!

I might have to poll for him, lol.

Childress was run off of playcalling duties in Minnesota... repeatedly called out in the media by his players for poor playcalling. That's probably why Shurmur wanted him... so he could keep calling plays.

Ya know...I'd forgotten about that, though I think he only called plays for a season or so. His offenses weren't known as being that great in Minny. Yet he was part of a very good offense in Philly.

Here's what I know: In spite of the fact we are a very poor run-blocking team, we are somehow turning into a solid pass-blocking team. That's a rare...and weird...feat. This isn't the Colts teams of the late 2000's where Manning buoyed his not-that-good offensive line by getting rid of the ball more quickly after the snap than most QB's in NFL history. I also know that it was fun taking the debate to whether or not our receivers were getting open the last couple of years. (They were, BTW ) and they've continued to get open this year. The designs and schemes are working, even for receivers who are too young to know their alphabets.

So who is to blame for the upward trends in that aspect of the offense? Could be that we've reached the point in our version of the WCO where the players are starting to understand it. The most common theme has said it takes a couple of years for it to sink in. I've believed that. If someone hasn't ever seen an NFL offense which subscribes to WCO principals when it's put to paper, it's a little mind-blowing.

Now if it's just a case where Chilly has that innate ability to be one step ahead of the defense and keep them fooled, then we seem to have a problem...

On one hand we have Shurmur, who is being absolutely blasted for his play-calling, and rightfully so.

On the other hand, we have Chilly, who was run out of Minnesota...partially for his play-calling, and rightfully so.

Ugh.

I mean...seriously...what are the odds? We have two highly talented and experienced offensive WCO guys, yet somehow neither of them have any idea how to call plays when the pressure is on?

Double-ugh.

I like to think I have a good sense when a player or coach should stay or go, and I've given up on Shurmur. That 4th down call last week was not only inexplicable but also inexcusable and indefensible (and however many other 'ble's I can muster up!) and no coach can be on the rise and make that kind of boneheaded screwup. I'm convinced that only a miracle can now save Shurmur. So what about Chilly? I wish I had enough info to make a fully informed opinion. Shurmur is right out there for everyone to see. Chilly looks like he should be sharpening Joe Banner's pencils in a back-room. Nobody can tell what he's about sitting in the boxes.

Holmgren is gone. Shurmur is next. Since Chilly is Shurmur's hand-picked guy, would his connections from his Philly days be enough to save his job?

There are way too many dynamics at play here right now to begin to analyze it with any degree of certainty and accuracy. Firing Shurmur and installing Chilly as the Interim HC would answer a bunch of questions, but it appears Haslam won't make that move. Too bad, because the sooner we start to eliminate possibilities the sooner we'll have answers.

The more I look at this, the more I think all the coaches are gone. Sadly, Jauron has been dealt a hand without too much talent. He's being creative and trying to coax production out of his unit, but you can only put so much lipstick on a pig. Damned thing is still a pig. Maybe he can somehow play the injury card and get a stay of execution. Time will tell.

Hey, at least we're consistent. We rank 27th on offense and 27th on defense. It wouldn't be hard justifying wiping the slate clean and trying to rebuild with what's here. As critical as I've been, there are pieces here that haven't existed before, though. I think we're one good guard away from being a genuinely good line. Two may be a pipe-dream I dream of what this line could do with two good all-around guards.

The more I think about Shurmur's role in all this, the more I'm of the opinion that cutting ties now will go a ways towards answering more questions. He's gone. Why wait? Let's start evaluating the other coaches while we can put them under the microscope.

Of course I'm also in the hated and sacrilegious group who think it's okay to lose out the string so the Browns can get a higher draft pick. But that would be a conflict of interest.

I say our offense is structured better under Chilly and that the concepts are more fluid and synchronized. Let's see if he's part of the problem as well. I think after last week dumping Shurmur would lighten the mood around Berea...

Maybe both are capable of calling plays, but not capable of calling plays while trying to manage a game as head coach simultaneously?

I can tell you that is not the case with Chilly. He's just conservative and gutless. HE would have punted on fourth down as well- even with AP in the backfield. Another thing, no way Chilly has put his stamp on this offense- he is the master of the screen pass, in all varieties. We still suck at it, and rarely see it.

I seem to recall that over the last couple of weeks we've managed to run successful screen passes in ways that we haven't been able to do in several seasons. It would take someone who has the time to go back and look for them, but we've done some good things with screens lately.

It's mostly been with Ogbannaya, and Jackson had some success with them in preseason.

I actually think it's got something to do with TR. Teams expect we're going to give him the ball every play, so when we bring in the backup RB, teams would naturally think "ok, they're going to the WRs now." Just a theory.

Sheldon Brown actually has value though. The rest of your list ....... I could move them out today and not be upset.

We arent a poor run blocking team. Richardson thinks he is Ginger Rogers in the backfield. Our run designs also leave a lot to be desired. Lauvao and Schwartz are our two best run blockers, so lets run center left on 99% of runs. Teams will never see that coming.

This is a question I have. Some say the issue with the run game is blocking, some say it is Richardson, some lay the blame on the coaching. To my untrained eye it appears to me, watching the games, that the defense knows where we ar egoing with the ball. Sometimes I even wonder if we are not in some way telegraphing our plays.Or are we just that predictable. I have seen on alot of occasions where Richardson appears to get the handoff and has a defender sitting there waiting on him. Like I said, I am not an expert, but it looks like a coaching issue to me.

Gees Mour, Richardson is injured,, give him a break. I'm not even sure he should try to play until that rib injury heals a little better.

He was pretty "meh" before the injury too...I think his ypc was 3.6 including his big game vs Cincy, which pretty much was his only really good game so far...he had another nice game vs NYG, who give up 5yds per run though, so his 4.8 look AVG considering this, but still ok...so, 1 and half games out of 5 healthy ones isn't what most of us expected out of a guy we invested a top 5 pick PLUS another 4th and 5th (think 2 out of Benjamin, JMJ, Winn, Skrine, Pinkston - like talent)

He will be good once fully healthy and getting a clue about the league, no doubt about that...but his "development", esp. with the mental part, leaves a lot to be desired especially compared to the leaps Weeden and Schwartz have taken already...and those 2 are playing MUCH MORE difficult positions to adjust to...not even close: RB is like the easiest and QB the most difficult, followed only by trench positions imho....taking all this into consideration his performance to date is somewhat disappointing

6th round rook Alfred Morris has a very healthy 4.8ypc in WAS and is 2nd in the NFL in yds only 1yd behind Foster. I never had problem with TRich the talent, just with his position....it was bad value. Now, he also delivered inconsistent perfomances and that just makes it worse but I'm not too concerned here...more with his health and position. I've written at length about it during the draft process...and both are already showing up

Richardson will be fine but he doesnt have his burst back and thats why he is dancing and why he was doing it long before the rib injury. Kid has special ability, just need to get him going.

Another problem is run design. Man I couldnt stand Daboll but he was super creative with the run game, just didnt have a clue on anything else. Shurmur is just like Andy Reid, really good at working the pass game but doesnt seem to get how to work the run game into it. Thats what made Holmgren such a good coach.

Yeah, LeSean McCoy has touched the ball a grand total of 30 times in the last two games. Ried is becoming his own worst enemy in panic mode.

rightfully so? And what are the odds?

What are the odds that any of us know more about the WCO than either of those guys? But we should get rid of them rightfully so?

I'll bet that every one of those plays if executed properly has a chance to go for a touchdown. Is that reality...no. It is possible though.

Our play calling is fine when it works...but bad when it don't.

You know what plays work...the ones your players can execute.

You know what happens when all your players can't execute plays? They don't work.

You know what happens when the pool of plays that players can execute is smaller than it should be? You look predictable. You look like you can't make adjustments. You look like you got out coached.

Last year our line couldn't pass block for a 3 step drop (and I will say that colt don't have wheeden's deep ball accuracy either)

So guess what...forget going deep...scratch those plays...low chance of successful execution.

Last year we were starting a practice squad rb...how good is he as a starter? How many plays does he know?

Think that might limit play calling?

Now this year we have rook's everywhere on the offense. Receivers hurt to boot.

You really think the offensive coaches have their full arsenal of plays? You think they have the players that can win the battle vs their man straight up?

You think these guys are all experienced enough to not have to think?

What we are seeing is the affect of inexperience.

I don't care what anyone says....that's good for some penalties that make a first down hard to get.

It means timing problems...in an offense where timing is crucial.

How much of the playbook you think all these guys can repeat without thinking?

Sometimes you guys all make me want to challenge you all to some Madden at 100 bucks a game....I get the all madden team, and you guys get the browns.

I don't know squat about play calling or madden, but i bet I win.

You need talent AND execution...we're starting to get a little of both.

With a little more time that pool of plays will grow giving the coaches more options....that's when we'll turn the corner.

You guys are screaming for a reset. I don't get it.

Only thing we haven't tried is time....sure hope they consider it.

Look at the Saints first four games to see what the lack of your good HC means.

You can talk a good game, but being able to play call around your oponents weaknesses and not make some pretty sloppy, elementary mistakes, means a lot to any team.

Or maybe all of those NFL owners who seem to try to be pretty thrifty guys are all fools for paying millions each year to proven NFL HC's. That's it! The coaching community has all of these billionaires fooled!

We are an inconsistent running team. Period. Our blocking is extremely inconsistent. T-Rich definitely has to learn to read the blocks, make one cut and go. He's done it, but he needs to do so more consistently. He'll get there.

I am a bit surprised, however, that our pass protection has come together sooner than our run blocking. Usually the reverse is true. Of course, with Shurmur abandoning the run as often as he does, I guess our guys have received plenty of pass pro practice.

My point...and my only point really is that you speak of "play calling around an opponents weakness" like it's no biggie....

Just scroll down the list of plays and pick one.

Let me guess....if a team has a sucky run defense but a good secondary then you run it right?

Well what if you suck at running?

Or if a team can be beat deep? Just throw it deep right...except your timing is off, or your line can't block that long.

This is a game of football experts...I can guarantee you that they all know "what to do"...doing it is another story.

Sure some of them are promoted to their level of incompetence. I just don't buy that they don't know what to do.

These guys fail for a multitude of reasons. To tunnel vision it down to a play is just crazy.

Quite the opposite actually. I'm saying most aren't suited to be great at the job. That more often than not, new HC's fail at becoming great HC's and that it's a hard job, not an easy one.

As in "do's and don'ts"? There is no "Pat answers". There are obvious things you don't do. I can sure give you some of those....

As long as you're close in any given game, you look at your talent and act accordingly. We're not the Green Bay Packers and we don't have the one/two punch in the running game like Houston.

What we have to do, unless the game is a blow out, is run a balanced game. No threat at running the ball let's your oponent focus on the secondary. No threat of passing downfield let's your oponent focus on your run.

The only game we won this year the attack was a blanced one. We only averaged 3.2 yards per rush, yet we rushed the ball over 30 times.

I understand you can't do that behind by 10 points with 6 minutes left in the 4th quarter, but you can look at our losses and see that we were passing at almost, if not more than a 2-1 margin through three quarters in our lossses.

I've never been one to say that one play call in any one given game makes or breaks a coach. It's looking at tendancies over a period of games. If the silly mistakes are cut back. If the level of compitancy is rising. Each game gives you indications when looked at as a whole.

When and if our O can consistantly put up 30 points in the air like N.O. does, then we can afford to pass twice as much as we run. Only when we have a running game like Houstons can we run twice as much as we pass.

This isn't rocket science here when I describe these things. Unless you can dominate on the ground or through the air, which we can do neither with a field full of rookies, your best friend is a balanced attack to keep oposing D's honest and guessing.

We did it once...................... and it worked pretty well.

Then" We reverted right back to the same way we had lost in the past with 41 pass attempts and 17 rushes.

Oh, BTW... We were averaging that exact same 3.2 yards per rush we got against the Bengals when we rushed and passed equally.

And Hardesty is a one-cut-and-go runner, but he can't get beyond 3.8 yards per carry.

In the early games this season our RB's were making their cuts in the backfield to avoid tacklers. Scratch that...in most games they were making cuts in the backfield to avoid tacklers.

Oh yes, we are a bad run-blocking team, and that has nothing to do with Richardson "dancing." There just aren't holes and creases there.

We're well into the season, and beyond the point where anomaly's and one-off's can happen. We've established ourselves as a poor run-blocking team, and a poor run-stopping team. We can point to injuries as something of an excuse for the defense with Rubin having missed time and Taylor being out, though they were here last year when we again weren't very good against the run. But on offense we've got all our starters. They just aren't getting any push off the line.

Richardson has some learning to do, but he isn't the problem behind our lack of a running game. Our line is. We average 3.8 yards per carry, which is good for a tie at 22nd in the league.

Just out of curiosity, here's a list of the teams we've played, and what they have given up so far in terms of yards per carry:

Eagles: 4.1 yards per carry
Bengals: 4.4 yards per carry
Bills: 6.0 yards per carry
Ravens: 4.0 yards per carry
Giants: 5.0 yards per carry
Colts: 4.8 yards per carry

We haven't played any teams which are actually very-good against the run this season, and we can't do any better than 3.8 per carry as a team? When we haven't had any leads? We managed to catch the Rats flat-footed, as they were playing their 4th game in 17-days. Beyond that? Meh, we just aren't good.

We play the Chargers this week, and they ARE good against the run, yielding only 3.5 yards per carry. As I'm making the point that we aren't good running the ball, it would be my luck that we actually show up this week, hehe, but conventional wisdom says we aren't going to be able to do jack-squat against this team.

There isn't any evidence which can be used to defend our lack of run-blocking. Hell, the eye-ball test tells us there aren't any holes, but then again, the eye-ball test should have told the fans that our receivers were getting open over the two seasons where McCoy was the QB, but that didn't happen, so...

I know that, you know that....everybody knows that. It's a good call when it works, and a bad call when it doesn't. Who are we to say? I'm sure these guys know about play action, and screens. We're even throwing it deep on 2nd and short. Gotta have 2nd and short to do it though. You don't like the results, and neither do I...but its not the play call...its the lack of execution.

Quite the opposite actually. I'm saying most aren't suited to be great at the job. That more often than not, new HC's fail at becoming great HC's and that it's a hard job, not an easy one.

Maybe it's just me, but I look at it different. You can't take this coach or that coach and say they were a failure, even though that's what the record showed.

Most guys get a shot, then they are damaged goods. Plenty of other up and coming coordinators that haven't screwed up yet.

But consider this...At some point people thought they were the best of the best. One of 32....32 head coaches in the nfl. Could a potential great head coach falter because of bad drafting from a gm? Could a marginal head coach do better than expected because some gm pulls talent miraculously from most of the draft?

How about a guy that takes over a team that is pretty stacked already? Or how about a guy that comes to a team that's a train wreck and the clock is ticking on a few years and your out?

I'll even use a player as an example...Take tom brady. Suppose bledsloe goes down in game 15. Brady plays game 16 and wins. Pats don't make the playoffs.

Do the patriots go into the following season with only a 6th rounder at qb? Probably not...after all 6th rounders never pan out. So they draft someone or trade for a vet...and just like that brady never happens.

You first have to implement a system...then you have to give it time. Players learn. Options increase. Mistakes lessen. Then you win.

obvious things? please do.

Here's my list...."only call plays that result in touchdowns" good enough for everyone involved?

I can 100% agree with you on balance. That makes the defense play honest. Now I don't know why they did what they did, but i'll bet you they wanted to stay balanced.

What do you do if a defense flat out sells out to stop the run? It is quite possible that those teams said, "we are shutting down the run, and we'll make the rookie qb beat us" Instead we see some drops by receivers...a couple stupid rookie throws. And some interceptions.

Guess what? Their plan worked.

How many times in preseason you hear kosar say they need to audible out of that running play and go outside to the man on man. Maybe wheeden sees it, but can't connect...or the receiver drops it. or he gets confused by a defense he hasn't seen. Right idea bad result.

Once a defense sees that they are going to keep doing it, until you show you can stop it.

How many times have we seen pit come out chucking it years ago when they were a power running the ball? Teams game planned to stop it, so they threw it until they backed off....then they ran it...then comes play action...defense don't know what's coming so they have to play honest.

Again...I agree with balance. That's optimal. That's another way of saying "we can do it all"

The difference between me and you is that you think balanced play calling results in winning.

I think you win when you are able to execute all facets of your offense...running and passing. You have more options....more plays that will move the chains. The result of that is a balanced game, because the defense has no idea what you are going to do next.

let me ask you this because its been something Ive been looking for and plays into everything you have said.
Teams used to stack the box because they could get stop the run and knew McCoy wouldnt go deep on them or run around.
Now Ive heard teams say they keyed on T-Rich early in the season and force Weedent to beat them.
Im thinking and perhaps wrongly that because the defense know that Weeden isnt going to run around and T-Rich is a focus that inside runs are not working so well and by defualt the pass blocking is so much better?
IDK just something I was thinking about reading your post. Probably nothing and Im wrong.

If you need 3 years to be a winner you got here 2 years to early. Get it done Browns.

well, I don't know if that plays a large role in the discrepancy between run-blocking and pass-blocking efficiency. I say that because of the comparison between two stats which typically affect each other, yet in the case of the Browns, they actually curve away from each other. That would indicate a very low probability of sheer coincidence.

You'd expect a runner who carries the ball very few times to gain a great amount of yards. That's common sense. But what if the runner carried the ball fewer times than most 'backs yet still leads the league in rushing? There's a chance something anomalous would be going on, but it's far more likely that the runner is just special.

So why say that? Because the Browns, in spite of starting a rookie QB, rank a ridiculous 4th in the league in pass-attempts, which is saying we've thrown the 4th most times. So you'd naturally expect that we'd rank somewhere near that in stats such as yards, completions, sacks allowed, etc etc. The telling stat there is sacks-allowed. You'd expect us to be near the bottom in the league, yet the opposite is true. The Browns have actually only given up 11 sacks, which is good for 7th fewest in the league. They have improved in that regard. In spite of my criticism of the lines run-blocking, they are pass-blocking at a level good enough to consistently win.

Now one question that could be asked is whether or not they are getting enough opportunities to learn how to run-block, because we just don't run the ball. At one point a couple of weeks ago we had the 3rd-worst run-to-pass ratio's in the league. Speculation could say that they aren't given the chance to wear down a defense. To a small degree, I would agree with that. It's essentially a proven NFL fact that if you can wear down a defensive front-7 they'll give up more yards. It's common sense, actually. Of course that's happening because we can't ever get a lead. And now the waters get even muddier, hehe.

If they can ever learn to run-block they'll be a very-good line, but they haven't shown any ability to face-up to a defense and punch them off the ball. Development tends to be the other way around, with run-blocking being more natural for these big-fatties, hehe. It'll be tough convincing fans that if they don't get better at imposing their wills on people one or both have to be replaced, because in spite of this being a passing-league, if we don't run the ball, we won't be a winner. However, in the mean-time, at least they are giving Weeden a chance to develop. That's at least a positive thing.

Time to join the 21st century and re-evaluate old axioms.
More hischool and college teams running the spread = more time spent on pass pro, less time on run blocking.
In the pros, more emphasis on the passing game, less time in pads(one day a week!) = less time to work on run blocking.
The run game is more about timing and tenacity.Pass pro is talent and technique.
I can't speak for the tenacity, but the timing hasn't been real good.I can't see technique from my barka-lounger at normal speed, but somebody must be coaching the heck out of these guys.

You can keep spouting all you like. You don't take a rookie QB with a bunch of rookie WR's in their first five games and pass 45-52 times and give up on the run only down by 6 in the second half.

I don't know if you simply aren't paying attention when you watch the games or what, but we have been passing so the box has not been being stacked against the running game.

The facts are pretty much in to some degree. We used a balanced attack in one game. We won that game. All other games have been a pass happy O with less than 20 rushing attempts and we've lost them all.

I haven't sat here nit picking every call Shurmer has made. But there has been an overall theme here. I've given you plenty of evidence as to how we are not The Packers or N.O. yet our pass to rush ratio would indicate it.

You keep ignoring the facts and throwing out jibberish. Double talk and excuses. If our HC wants to have a balanced attack, then call a baloanced game plan. Like I said, he's done it once, we only avergaed 3.2 yards per carry with over 30 carries and we won.

He didn't do it before that game and didn't do it after that game and we lost them all. Now you spin that and throw out more jibberish all you like. It still won't change the facts.

This is it for me..Holmy has done some positives for the organization. He put a stgructure in place and it shows. He put Heckert in and that in itself shows as the drafting has been better..not where it could be IMO but better.
The additions to this team have helped especially on the offensive side of the ball.
But the negatives are glaring.
I will always bank that year 1 was the main arwa of critique with me aside from the botched trade and how certain fires have been mishandled.
Keeping Gini was the most ridiculous thing he did regardless of how he felt.

He knew from his Seattle days(and even said so) that he didn't want to repeat that senero ,keeping someone a year too long.Well he didn't stick to his guns and it shows now.
But this in part points the finger to Lerner.
Had he laid out for MH that his hire of Magini was a flop and that if U are wanting to be a partt of this,U must coach the 2010 season and then get a HC ,that would have pointed the team in the right direction from the get-go.
The FA and draft would have been different and a faster turnup would have been in play.

As it stands another draft for the 3-4 putrid signing of Delhomme as the QB .
BNo one wanted Jake because he was too fragile and clearly was done playing.
But the Browns overpaid for him and we saw where it went
Next ,was the hiring of PS..still don't get it. He was not sought after, and was only a OC.
Nothing suggested he was a hot up and coming HC but because of that agent/Philly connection here we go.
.
Add to it Mike has said he has not interfered too much and has only given advice when asked.

Hypocritical if ya ask me. U put your finger in the draft and trades but where it really counted U backed off..clearly PS is over his head and I swee nothign in him that suggests he's going to morph into a respectable HC.
The RG3 fiasco was a slap, because the FO was napping and seemed to be caught with their pants down.

We all know Synder and Fisher were buddies so that should have made the matter urgent if you waned the deal.

If U realized as they should, have that DS was a classic poker player and NO PRICE is too high for him then U either don't get in the war or you bring out every cannon U have.

The aftermath made me feel embarrassed as the comments from MH semed like whining and pouting.
It seemed like a half hearted attempt especially when they tried to counter-offer..really???
Don't invite more embarrassment by doing that .
The other things were that Mike was defacto president just as Haslam has said.
Holmy said he would be visible,he wasn't ..he would speak a lot,he didn't,not to Cleveland..but to Seattle.
How the fires were handled during many a mishap clearly showed he and the rest didn't understand much about image and PR.

why would someone think the skins would offer a trade that is completely without precedent in the NFL to move up from 6 to 2? Three firsts and a second for a first, not even moving up to #1 overall, is so far beyond what has ever happened before that it seems like we wouldn't have been able to get a shot IMO. Had we offered #4, #22, #37, and next year's 1, the Rams would have traded for the Skins' '12, '13, '14 #1, '12 #2, and '13 #3. Shanahan didn't care what it took, he was a dead man walking without RGIII, so it was no skin off his teeth to trade away any number of picks in the future, b/c if they didn't get griffin he was toast. Fisher was going to let it happen b/c he is budz with Shanny. I'm glad Fisher screwed himself over and got stuck with Brockers. I cheer for the Skins every week (besides when they play us) because I want Fisher's deal to sink.

if offering three 1st round picks for a guy was napping I'd hate to see what we'd give up if they were awake...

Spouting? Ignoring facts? Jibberish? Double talk and excuses?

I'm pretty sure that's my opinion...now that I know that's what you think of mine then i'll leave you with this. Whatever...Carry on.

I would love to pick you post apart, but i'm not going to waste my time, especially since you'll obviously respond just like you did...sorry i don't want to join the lynch mob.

You are totally off base if think that merely calling a "balanced" game gives you the best chance to win....i mean if thats all you had to do then why not just look at your calls and keep them balanced...then you win right?

Let me ask you this in all seriousness....why is 3rd and 3 better than 3rd and 10? And please don't answer with its 7 yards closer to a first down.

He was pretty "meh" before the injury too...

In his defense, if he needs defending, is that he missed all of training camp.

Quote:

...but his "development", esp. with the mental part, leaves a lot to be desired especially compared to the leaps Weeden and Schwartz have taken already...

And I think this is evidence of the lack of training camp.

I think he'll be fine although his production thus far coming off knee surgery, missing camp and now the ribs is not exactly what I was hoping for.

Yes outbidding a notorious overspender and failure of an ownwer in Snyder would have been so helpful to us. Smart people who are building a team would be so very wise to do that.

People who don't insist on whining just for the sake of whining would have realised what a stupid move that would have been giving up so much in our position. But there's always a couple of people........ well, you know.....

Because there are a very large variety of plays that give you a very good chance to make it on 3rd down and 3 versus 3rd down and 10.

Because on third down and three, if you have been running a balanced attack, you can easily sell PA and pass long catching your oponents off gaurd.

On 3rd and 10 it's almost a 100% passing down and very predictable. Because if you averaged 3.5 yards on 1st and 2nd down to get into the position of 3rd and 3..... 3.5 x 3 = 10.5 yards = 1st down

Ask anyone, 3rd and 3 is far more of an iviable position to be in than 3rd and 10. Your playbook is cut at least in half when you have to get 10 yards on one play.

Weeden is in his rookie season and is not Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. We don't have Megatron or Fitzgerald. We've abondoned the run too early and too often.

The fact is we've played one game, when broken down into quarters, we had a balanced attack the entire game. We won that game. It helped to sell PA and made it easier to pass the ball.

Now you can attack that all you wish. But that's sound football 101 unless you have a dominate running or passing game. We have neither.

And we weren't good running the ball in that win either, We averaged 3.2 yards per carry. The only difference in this game and the rest ( and BTW, we are averaging more yards per carry on the season than 3.2 ), is that we had a balanced attack and did not abandone the run.

The run opens up the pass. It makes the oposing D stay home and cover the run. And on 3rd and 3? It forces the oposing D to concentrate on the run making PA very plausible in such situations.

Two incompletions on 1st and 2nd down won't do those things for you.......
