I must be the only person in America still not 100% sold on RGIII being a true Franchise QB.

Cam Newton was better last season than RGIII is now. Look where he is at. I will reserve my judgment until RGIII throws more than three balls past the 20 yards.

I think you have to define better. Cam was flashier... but RGIII has been a lot more consistent and efficient... But I'm curious if everybody is also reserving judgement on Luck as well because he's not keeping up with Cam from last year....

I'm personally not. I think what I saw from Luck when we played them was a young man, finding his way and doing a pretty heady job of it. nothing flashy,, just good sound football.

Do I think he's better than RG3.. well, I think he may end up being. Is he better than Cam Newton? I think Cam Newton was a flash in the pan.., not because of physical skills, but because he's a kinda got a thug mentalality. And that won't work long term.

I don't think Cam has a thug mentality, I do think he has a maturity problem. He doesn't handle adversity well, maybe because in football he's never really had to. Living in Carolina I probably get to see it more than most but he just looks like a wounded puppy when he has to say that he didn't play well and needs to improve. In high school he didn't lose, at Florida he was doing well until the legal issue, at Blinn Junior College he didn't lose, at Auburn he didn't lose.. heck even last year the team didn't win much but Cam was a rock star personally... this year the team is still losing and Cam is struggling and he can't handle it. If he doesn't get some help, somebody to talk him through this, he's going to go the way of Vince Young and Cam will be out of the league in 3 years...

I agree with that. I just think RG3 and Luck are much further ahead than Newton when it comes to maturity and how they carry themselves.

it's interesting debate at the very least.

okay, so Cam came out like a rocket last year but the Panthers could not win. then defenses started taking away what he wanted to do and he struggled, but the Panthers played weaker teams and managed to win a few games, so noone cared.

this season, Cam is still struggling to adjust + the Panthers are losing, so he is regressing (it started last season).

--------------

and that's the rub. once defenses are designed to take away your comfort routes, can you adjust and do something else? we are beginning to see that with defenses on Weeden, we'll see how well we adjust to it.

RGIII is still getting those underneath routes because teams fear his mobility. Pitt was able to take away some of it with their athletic LBers (and I would love to see him have to go against Chicago's defense).

Sadly, Dallas is really the only team left on their schedule that can really force him out of what he likes. Their CBs are good enough to just leave them on an island and they have athletic LBers who can cover the underneath space.

Perhaps Thug mentality was a bad choice of words, but given his actions lately, yeah, I see maturity as an issue.. I'll revise my comment to that.

Lomardi Denies Rumors Linking Him To Browns

By DARYL RUITER, 92.3 The Fan Browns Beat Reporter
October 30, 2012 12:13 PM

CLEVELAND (92.3 The Fan) – Since the sale of the Cleveland Browns to Jimmy Haslam was announced, rumors concerning the overhaul of the organization have been rampant.

One name that has continued to surface in relation to the Browns is Michael Lombardi.

Lombardi, who was the pro personnel director in Cleveland from 1987-1995, is currently an “NFL Insider” for NFL Network.

Over the weekend CBS Sports’ NFL insider Jason LaCanfora reporte that Lombadri could be a candidate for the Browns.

Lombardi joined Baskin and Phelps Tuesday on 92.3 The Fan and said rumors of him joining the Browns at this point are speculation.

“I know nothing about it,” Lombardi said. “I appreciate Jason mentioning my name but I don’t understand where it’s coming from.”

Mike Holmgren, as expected, has stepped aside as team president and will leave the organization at seasons end – if not sooner – with former Eagles president Joe Banner tasking over as CEO.

General manager Tom Heckert and coach Pat Shurmur are not expected to remain with the team beyond 2012 even though Haslam has said publicly they would be evaluated at the end of the year.

“A lot of it would be predicated on situations,” Lombardi said. “Right now the Cleveland Browns are coming off a win, still have their general manager in place. There’s been no indications from what I’ve read or seen from Jimmy Haslam or what Joe Banner said that they’re going to make any changes.

“It’s purely speculative.”

While Lombardi effectively denied contact with or interest from the Browns, he didn’t rule out an interest in returning to the front office.

“I enjoy what I’m doing,” Lombardi said. I miss the game in terms of being on a day-to-day basis within a team and if the right situation were to come up for me, certainly I would be interested in talking to them.

“I don’t know if I would do it but I’d be interested in talking to them.”

So what situation could lure him from the media ranks?

“A lot of it would be predicated on people that I know and like and respect working for them,” Lombardi said. “And understanding what the plan is. Where are we headed, the direction and how do I fit.”

As far as the rumor mill, Lombardi said that he tries to avoid the rumors and speculation.

“I don’t react to it,” Lombardi said. “I think ultimately that people are always looking for names. I’m not sure that they are the names that always end up getting the jobs but there’s no sense in me chasing the story. There’s no story to be had because obviously I would know.”

After leaving the Browns, Lombardi’s next official job came in 1998 as the Eagles’ pro personnel director (after serving as a consultant to owner Jeffrey Lurie in 1997) before moving on to Oakland in 1999.

He was fired in 2007 and began his media career after.

I hope there is nothing to this, I cannot stand Lombardi, and I don't mean just on TV, his personnel decisions are not good as a whole. Sure he has found the proverbial acorn, but overall I don't like his draft picks and player evaluations. I hope Haslam is smarter than to bring this guy anywhere near Berea (except as a guest, maybe).

So I got to the part where co-worker says my other worker is linked to this job. Then other worker says its speculation. Sounds like co-worker trying to nominate him for the job. Nice the talking heads picked up on it and gave him an interview to say I have no idea basically.

Haslam I dont think will be taking his cue that this guy is hot from a bunch of writers and Talking heads.

I have a story someone on this board is up for spin master of the year award they would probably accept it if given but they deny ever spinning.
That would be 2 differnt conversations and would require linking things together that are totally unrealated while only focusing on the 1st part of the equation becuase the cause and effect of that would then have no bearing on the outcome.
Its not about what happened its about what could have happened outside of the peramiters of what was actually happening.

major fail.

Should I have used purple font?

why would someone think the skins would offer a trade that is completely without precedent in the NFL to move up from 6 to 2? Three firsts and a second for a first, not even moving up to #1 overall, is so far beyond what has ever happened before that it seems like we wouldn't have been able to get a shot IMO. Had we offered #4, #22, #37, and next year's 1, the Rams would have traded for the Skins' '12, '13, '14 #1, '12 #2, and '13 #3. Shanahan didn't care what it took, he was a dead man walking without RGIII, so it was no skin off his teeth to trade away any number of picks in the future, b/c if they didn't get griffin he was toast. Fisher was going to let it happen b/c he is budz with Shanny. I'm glad Fisher screwed himself over and got stuck with Brockers. I cheer for the Skins every week (besides when they play us) because I want Fisher's deal to sink.

Here's the part that makes the Browns looked they caught napping.
First EVERY FREAKING person who knows about Snyder knew he would blow up the board to make a deal.
So..one of two things ,U either give up everything initially or don't bid.
Next for those that say Holmy was on top of it, as much as I was hot about it,the Rams set the rules..the Browns tried to come back with a second offer, which is what they should have used the first time if they were that serious.

The whining aftreward was silly because the Rams said they set the rules and there was no refunds or discounts.
I didn't want the Browns to give up the farm as I am glad they were able to use those picks and help the offense, but either make your best deal or just don't do it. Save the organization embarrasment.
It just would have been better if they hadn't gotten into the bidding.

So if he turns out to be a long term franchise QB, then it wasn't a bad deal... if he declines or busts, then it will be an epic failure...

This team was too far from being good to give up that much. Had we done so, RG3 would be ruined on this team, in the years that it would take to recover from giving up that much, and that's assuming he lives up to all the hype.

I slightly disagree. We did offer up a kings ransom on our 1st bid. 3 1st round picks to move up 2 spots. You have to remember Washington was 3 spots below us. I dont have the trade value sheet but the pts are alot more to go from 7 to 2 then from 4-2. That has to be taken into account.
I see it like the lottery you cant win if you dont play. Better to have put in a bid then to just sit on your hands and say well someone probably will out bid us.

The crying of foul afterward I think was bad.

I'd love to see someone do the points value of our #4 and #22 plus vs their #7 and 2nd round pick.
While impossible to place actual value on future picks there was a good chance us with RG3 would be in the early part of the draft and I would have expected Washington with RG3 would do better as well. So your looking an lower pick then #4 vs a lower pick the #7 next year.
The real wild card is the 3rd pick from Washington at which point you would expect them to make a big jump and thus the pick would be about the same as the #22 just 3 drafts out.

So alls you really can do is total up what our #4 pick was worth vs their #7 and 2nd round pick. Expect to get a lower pick from washington the year after and wait 2 years for the #22 pick.

Our offer was not a weak offer in the least. I've said it before if the Rams had taken our offer the media would have and still would ripping us for paying way to much for an unproven QB who would look like McCoy 2.0 in this offense always running around as soon as pressured because face it Shurmur would not change his offense to fit RG3 like Washington has.

Btw they only have 1 more victory then us and that is the most suprising part to me. RG3 almost got himself killed because the coach sent him out deep. While RG3 may become great Washington is doing nothing to help him become a complete QB. He already is behind Weeden in that regard. He is on the same path Vick was on.

Sorry this post got a bit longer then I had intended.

Had we not offered anything, Washington would have moved up for their first and second this year. If you think the "rules" the Rams set are what actually happened, I think you're too trusting.

we came back and modified the offer ,which then was too late...so it stands to reason it wasn't the best offer. I didn't say it was weak, what was weak was the whining.
Sure we knew about Snyder and Fischer, but if you're gonna get in the middle of that crap expect the worst..lets put it out there, anyone think Haslam and Banner would have approached it that way??

I can picture Banner with that constipated look and snarling: 'Screw Snyder! Aint gonna blow up my draft picks for one player, take him and run!"
Haslam throws his arm down, and says we'll just pound the Skins when they play us..keeping my picks!!

Pure speculation on my part but I could see Haslam having been behind the whole go hard for him as the reason we were in the mess as you say in the 1st place.

If Haslam thought he could market RG3 and already knowing he was going to buy the team could have asked Lerner to try to get RG3. Lerner then could have told Mike to go get it done.

Anyway as you said lets crush the skins and watch RG3 fade into the land of over rated, media hyped, potential.

The difference is that Mirer, Leaf, and Russell is that they never experienced any success on the field. They struggled from the word go, and never progresses.

Mirer had only 1 season in which he had more TDs than INTs, that being his 2nd season. Leaf never did so, and struggled just to complete 50% of his passes. Russell was a disaster across the board.

RG3 has already has great success. People talk about Newton, but I think that there are a lot of factors contributing there. Their OL is an absolute mess. They are "retooling" now. I also think that they are retooling him a bit .... trying to get him to stay in the pocket more, and be a throwing QB more than a dual threat. That may work, or it may not.

It's hard to put your finger on what exactly is wrong with Cam and the Panthers this year. Their fans last year were sort of like we are this year... they saw it coming together and thought that with a good draft and a year of experience they would be competing... they have actually regressed considerably.

Last year Stewart and Williams both rushed for about 5.4 ypc.. this year both are at about 3.8... That's a very significant reduction...

The biggest thing that I see is that Chud ran a version of Auburn's offense last year, a lot of read option stuff, simple reads.. this year he seems to want to run a more pro style offense and I don't think Cam is ready.

Steve Smith is in his 12th year and isn't the same WR he used to be.. they lost Jeremy Shockey who was a very good TE for them last year...

It's hard to say exactly what the problem is but I think it has to start with the coaches. These guys didn't just across the board get worse...

A bust is a bust. An injury is an injury. A career ending injury is a career ending injury.

I'm not saying any of these will happen, but lets face it, the odds of Weeden, Tannehill and RG3 all making solid franchise QB's out of the same draft are extremely slim, yet all three are showing the potential to be very good.

Has it every happened? Yes. But how often and how long ago was that?

To try to base the success of an NFL QB on 8 games is not logical. Many have looked the part and failed. Not saying that RG3 will, but I consider it just as foolish, considering all of the things that can happen, to mark him the next........... greatest thing since sliced bread?

Well, we saw a nice crew of franchise level guys back in 1983.

Hall of Fame QBs Elway, Kelly, Marino .... a plus level QB in O'Brien, plus decent QBs in Eason, and Blackledge. (again, adjusted for the time frame in which they played)

Man, that draft also had Eric Dickerson, Curt Warner, Bruce Matthews, Jim Jeffcoat, Darell Green, Henry Ellard, Wes Hopkins, Leonard Marshall, and Roger Craig.

That's just some from the 1st 2 rounds.

What a draft that was. Too bad we checked out of that draft. We traded away our 1st round pick, along with a couple of other picks, for Tom Cousineau.

From this draft with all kinds of excellent players, and Hall of Famers ..... we drafted guys like Rom Brown ...... Tim Stracka .... Rocky Belk ........

We did draft Reggie Camp and Dave Puzzuoli who played well for us, and Bill Contz, who played some OL for us IIRC. We also got Boyce Green late.

However .... for a draft where teams remade their futures ..... it's sad just how little we got.

And that was pretty much my point. That was within one year of being three decades ago. Great draft and wealth of talent too!

But considering that was one of the last 29 drafts, it certainly doesn't bode well for ending up with three franchise QB's out of one draft. And that even leaves Russell Wilson out of the mix here.

I'm not saying it can't or won't happen, but the odds are heavily in favor of at leaast one, if not two of these QB's to never make it to the level of "franchise QB".

I also can't predict which one or one's that will be. But that's why I rerally don't put much stock into these eight games. Or their entire first season for that matter.

Does it show indications and potential for growth? It certainly does. But to me, it takes three years to really know what you have in a QB.

Not in its totality mind you. As this times passes you must see growth and development. You must see their ability to adjust to the pro game. For them to have the consistant arm strength and accuracy.

That's why I'm excited about Weeden. To this point he has hit every indicator. But as you may have gathered from my description above, I'm a very long way from saying "We've found our franchise QB of the future."

I feel the exact same thing holds true for RG3 as well.

JMHO

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I don't think that anyone can say that a guy is absolutely a franchise guy in a year or 2. That designation takes more time than that to truly earn.

That being said, I believe that a guy can start to show the traits and abilities that a franchise guy possesses. However, as I have long said, the true test of a QB is how he adjusts when defenses start taking away the things he does best. The guys who truly make it as a "Franchise QB" are the guys who learn to take weaknesses and turn them into strengths, so that defenses can't take away one or 2 things and leave the QB a helpless mess.

From what I have seen thus far of Weeden, I am extremely encouraged. He is capable of making every throw on the field. He, and his receivers, need to work on positioning on the field, and ball placement on certain throws, but overall he has been more than solid, especially for a rookie coming from the spread, into the WCO. Add in rookie receivers all around him, and I like what he has shown even more.

I agree.. the first thing he has to show is the ability to do everything a franchise QB can do physically... then he has to show the ability to adjust when defenses adjust to him (and this is more mental than it is physical and this is where a lot of physically talented guys get stuck)... then the last thing he has to show is how he performs in crunch time of big games... and most rookies don't get to show that in their first couple years because historically they start with pretty bad teams...

Wow, YTown! What blasts from the past. I remember Ron Brown was the sprinter who couldn't catch a cold. Green had some 100 yd. games (was he #30?). I was 11 at the time, and my dad bought me a Cousineau jersey to replace my Sipe jersey. He wasn't sold on Cous., but he didn't want to disappoint me.

Reggie Camp and Puz, did have some nice games. I remember a few big plays from Puz in the '87 playoff game against the Colts where he stuffed the RB behind the LOS. Funny how after all that time, certain things stick in a person's mind!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

Mixed views on possible Lombardi return to Cleveland

Posted by Mike Florio on October 31, 2012, 11:30 AM EDT

As the Browns make plans to lay the foundation for the first Vince Lombardi Trophy in franchise history, another guy named Lombardi who worked for the Browns franchise that used to be in Cleveland could be returning. Or not.

Jason La Canfora of CBS recently floated Mike Lombardi’s name as a possible candidate to return to Cleveland, as a member of the front office under new CEO Joe Banner. Stronger than the link to Cleveland is the fact that Lombardi once worked for Banner in Philadelphia, before the hiring of Andy Reid and coach and, essentially, the chief of the football operations.

Tony Grossi of ESPNCleveland.com has a somewhat (sarcasm) different assessment of the situation, capping an article on the possible switch from G.M. Tom Heckert to Lombardi like this: “If Banner now is seriously considering Lombardi as a replacement for Heckert, who is eminently more qualified and can draft rings around Lombardi, then the Browns’ fortunes are not as promising as I once thought.”

Lombardi is a somewhat (no sarcasm) polarizing figure in league circles. Regarded as close to his former boss in Cleveland, Bill Belichick, the current NFL Network employee gets access and scoop from Belichick but, to date, not a job. (That said, Lombardi’s son has been hired by Belichick.) In contrast, the late Al Davis publicly lambasted Lombardi during an anti-Lane Kiffin press conference. (Then again, the list of folks Davis publicly lambasted is not a short one.)

Like any other NFL hire, player or otherwise, it only takes one team to make the move. Banner told PFT Live earlier this month that the Browns hope to put the right mix of people together moving forward. Whether Lombardi is in the mix to be part of that mix remains to be seen.

My God, this story had better not have any legs.

I cannot think of any worse possible candidate to replace a guy that it already doing a pretty darn good job. I think I might actually (seriously!) want Matt Millen over Lombardi.
The nut didn't just fall far from the tree with that one... it was picked up by a squirrel that was hit by a garbage truck, embedded in the wheels and carried to the dump.

This is all you really need to know:

Lombardi probably quoted an inside source to La Canfora as saying Lombardi was in the mix, neglecting to mention that Lombardi was actually the inside source.

OH MY!!! Say it isn't so.
This guy is a moron, and yes- he makes Matt Millen look brilliant. If you want to raid the NFL Network of an analyst- go get Mayock. I bet he would do pretty well. But Heckert is still my choice. I really hope this team starts winning this year- would make it harder to make some changes.

One question, who is out there right now that can do a better job going forward than Heckert has done so far? If Haslam and Banner can't answer that question with three viable candidates to bring in to interview for fit, then it would be stupid, completely stupid to replace Heckert.

Lombardi it a fool and a tool who was unable to turn stints under two of the best minds in football, Walsh & Belichik, into a viable NFL career. Didn't last a year with the Eagles, ran the Raiders into the ground, why the hell would Haslam want him here? He's where he needs to be and has found his niche as an "insider" talking head.

It is possible that there is somebody out there who could do better... but the odds are that most people would do a whole lot worse

Very true.
Let me restate my view: There is Absolutely Nobody out there that is a Slam-Dunk Guarantee to even be As Good, much less Better.
