BEREA, Ohio -- Browns starting left guard Jason Pinkston is in the Cleveland Clinic with a blood clot in his lung, a league source told The Plain Dealer.

He'll miss at least Sunday's game against the Colts and his status beyond that is uncertain.

"As we go through next week, we'll determine if he's going to miss an extended period of time,'' said coach Pat Shurmur.

On Thursday, Pinkston was taken to the emergency room, where the clot was discovered, the source said. He was then admitted to the Clinic, where he's being treated aggressively with blood thinners.

Pinkston had been having symptoms for a few weeks, and couldn't make it through Sunday's game against the Bengals. He was seen getting ill a few times on the sidelines. At first, he thought he had an upper respiratory ailment such as pneumonia.

He returned to practice Wednesday, but was limited and still didn't feel well. Thursday, it grew worse.

"At this point, we're more concerned with Jason's well-being than anything else,'' his agent, Neil Schwartz, said. "We're taking it one step at a time.''

Pinkston is also undergoing a battery of tests to determine what caused the clot in the first place, the source said.

"I've talked to him, he's doing fine and I intend to go see him here (soon),'' said Shurmur.

Fifth-year pro John Greco, who replaced Pinkston last week and will start against the Colts, visited him at the Clinic Thursday night.

"I was down with a couple of different guys, he had some family down there and a couple of different friends,'' said Greco. "We wanted to respect his privacy and let him have some time with them.''

Greco admitted it's a blow to the tight-knit line.

"Jason's obviously a teammate and a good friend,'' Greco said. "We're going to do anything we can to try to get him some wins. We really don't know a lot of details, but we're teammates and friends and we just want to let him know we're with him.''

Greco knew Pinkston was struggling last week before and during the game.

"You could tell something was wrong,'' he said. "We're with him, I talk to him every now and again to keep his spirits up and let him know we're with him.''

Said left tackle Joe Thomas: "It's definitely a little bit scary, but we're going to be in touch with him and hopefully things will be alright. I talked to him last night. Sounds like his spirits are up and he's doing fairly well all things considered.''

Thomas said Pinkston hadn't been himself for awhile. Pinkston struggled with his stamina during practice and had trouble breathing.

"He's definitely been struggling with something for a couple of weeks, so there obviously a concern just to find out what was going on,'' Thomas said. "Hopefully they've got it under control and are able to help him start feeling better here shortly. He's definitely in our thoughts and we'll definitely keep him in our thoughts as long as he's out.''

Said Josh Cribbs: "It's a scary thing. We're all worried about him and hope he's okay.''

In other Browns news:

* Browns wide receiver Greg Little, who was sent home Thursday morning with the flu, was back in practice today and should be ready to play Sunday in Indianapolis.

* Two other players were idle today: linebacker Scott Fujita and cornerback Dimitri Patterson. With Fujita out, rookie James-Michael Johnson will get his second straight start on the strong side. Patterson's absence means Buster Skrine will play nickelback again with Joe Haden and Sheldon starting outside.

* Running back Trent Richardson practiced again today with a flak jacket to protect the damaged cartilage in his ribs, but was limited. Richardson is determined to play, but the Browns appear to be going easy on him to get him to Sunday.

"He practiced all the way through today and he'll be there (in Indianapolis),'' said Shurmur.

* Receivers Travis Benjamin and Mohamed Massaquoi (hamstrings) practiced today, but Benjamin looks ahead of Massaquoi in his rehab. Benjamin, who said Thursday he expects to play, moved well in practice and received plenty of reps, while Massaquoi was limited.

"We'll see,'' said Massaquoi, who didn't sound overly optimistic. "If not this week than I'll be really eager and excited to get back out there next week and make up for lost time.''

blood clot is major scary stuff. I would say he is done for the year with the blood thinner he will be on, there is no way he can play football this year. Just hope for a speedy recovery. Good luck Pinky

Greco played pretty well but Pinkston was really coming into his own at LG. This makes us really thin at guard, although Miller did play some there as well as at tackle.

For JMJ, great to see him on the strongside. I love the JMJ, DQ and Robertson combo at backer. The range is just incredible. I was thinking about how this group looked last year with Fujita and Gocong compared to JMJ and Robertson last week and it is just amazing. The closing speed and range is terrific and these guys may make a few mistakes but they have the speed to recover.

On Mo, keep him out this week and let him come back 100%. To soon and he will be on IR from the hammy. Also just pick your shots with Benjamin. I wouldnt use him for anymore than 10-15 plays at most.

Wow, that's nothing to screw around with. I'm glad that they caught it before it did serious damage, like a stroke.

Tough loss to see if he could develop any further, but his health is most important. I hope they get stuff figured out.

At this point I could care less if he plays another down. He's got a serious problem and the man is way too young for that. I just want to see him recover. Playing football can wait.

Agreed. Put him on IR so that full recovery can be made. Playing football should be the last thing on his mind right now.

Good luck to Jason and his family.

No real surprise here.

Jason Pinkston will be soon placed on injured reserve by Cleveland Browns, say sources | cleveland.com
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ss...#incart_m-rpt-2

INDIANAPOLIS -- Browns starting left guard Jason Pinkston (blood clot in lung) will be placed on injured reserve soon and will be lost for the season, multiple sources told the Plain Dealer today.

The move could happen as early as Monday.

Pinkston, 25, was rushed to the emergency room on Thursday, where doctors discovered a life-threatening blood clot in his lung. He was admitted to the Cleveland Clinic, where he's being aggressively treated. Doctors are also trying to determine the cause of the clot, which will dictate the course of treatment, and whether or not Pinkston will be able to return to football.

A blood clot in the lung, or pulmonary embolism, can occur for many reasons, including trauma to an extremity or lack of circulation due to a long plane ride. They're also common after surgeries, but Pinkston hasn't had undergone a procedure. Clotting can also be heredity, or be a symptom of Lupus or cancer.

Pinkston is undergoing a battery of tests at the Clinic to determine the cause of the clot, which may take some time. According to Dr. Daniel Simon, UH Chief of Cardiovascular Medicine, who has not treated Pinkston and spoke only in general terms, a patient in Pinkston's situation will need at least three months of an interrupted blood-thinner, during which risky activities such as football are prohibited.

If it's an identifiable cause such as trauma to the leg, Pinkston could possibly return to football next season, after about three to six months on the blood thinner.

In Pinkston's absence, guard John Greco, a Youngtown native, will start.

In other Browns news:

• ESPN's Adam Schefter reported today that Browns CEO Joe Banner will have final say over any possible trades this season. The deadline is Oct. 30 at 4 p.m. Owner Jimmy Haslam said last week that the football side will report to Banner. It doesn't mean that Banner will have final say over the 53-man roster next season.

• Linebacker Scott Fujita (neck, shoulder) will consult with doctors this week to determine if he should retire, CBS Sports' Jason LaCanfora reported. Fujita has had a history of neck problems, the report says.

• Tight end Alex Smith is among the inactives, but largely to get another linebacker on the field for special teams. It's not because of the concussion that caused him to miss three games, a source said. Smith played last week against the Bengals.

I hope Jason is alright.

The nasty thing about clots is that it can often be a genetic condition. We have to hope it was caused by an injury.

If he ever has another blood clot his career is finished.

Scott should just retire. I would advise most players to shorten their careers in general. Injuries can nag you til the grave if you arent lucky.

Hope he is alright. VERY tricky and dangerous stuff. Thinners really need monitored, and he won't dare be cut in any way. Take care, big fella. Wishing you good health!

100% the correct move from a health and a football standpoint. I have a feeling next year Pinkston and Luavao will have some competition, but as for now I'm glad he was released from the hospital.

Browns have promoted Shaw from the Practice Squad.

Cleveland Browns place Jason Pinkston on injured reserve Monday | cleveland.com
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2012/10/cleveland_browns_place_jason_p.html

BEREA, Ohio -- As expected, Browns left guard Jason Pinkston has been placed on injured reserve for the season with a blood clot in his lung that was life-threatening.

The clot was discovered Thursday after Pinkston was rushed to the emergency room with difficulty breathing and other symptoms that had plagued him for about two weeks. On Monday, Pinkston assured fans in a tweet that this is "just a bump in the road," indicating he intends to return to football.

Guard John Greco, who's replacing him, has been in frequent contact with Pinkston, and knows he's determined to return.

"I don't even think that's a conversation where he's talking about being done," said Greco. "I know he wants to be out there as soon as he can. Like I said all along, Jason's just trying to figure out what's going on with him right now, and we're behind him. So anyway we can help, [we] will."

The Browns filled Pinkston's roster spot with first-year offensive lineman Jarrod Shaw, who spent the first seven weeks on the practice squad. Shaw (6-3, 316) started 16 of his 23 games at Tennessee, including 13 starts as a senior. They also signed former Ohio State offensive lineman Bryant Browning (6-4, 325), a Cleveland native and Glenville High grad, to the practice squad.

Browning, who started 40 of his 52 games at Ohio State, was signed by St. Louis as an undrafted free agent in July of 2011 and waived in August. He then spent most of last season and the first six weeks of this year on the Panthers' practice squad.

Pinkston was supposed to be released Monday from the Cleveland Clinic, but tweeted that "my blood is just not quite therapeutic yet for me to leave and just continue on medications."

Pinkston also tweeted, "The big show [Mike Holmgren] stopped by today and brought me a ton of stuff that was pretty awesome."

Excellent news for Pinkston!

http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ss...t_river_default

Good news: Guard Jason Pinkston has been cleared by doctors to resume working out, he reported on his Twitter account Wednesday. The club placed Pinkston on season-ending injured reserve after a blood clot was discovered on Oct. 19.

"Finally cleared to lift & condition full time!! Appreciate the thoughts and prayers!!!" Pinkston wrote.

I think our line has played well since he's been gone. Not sure if that's because he was a weak link or if the line has just gelled.

Much more important than that, though, is that he's got a clean bill of health. I hope he can come back better than ever.

The fact that he'll be able to come back makes our line stronger. He'll either be a starter, or a backup, but he'll be an upgrade over whoever he'll knock off the roster next year.

It's because Greco is just as good as Pinkston , BUT Pinkston has more upside which is the main reason he was starting..

GM,

Can you give me some insight on why Pinkston has more upside than Greco? Greco is not 'old' by any standard and has looked pretty darn good.

FWIW...this is a serious question. I'm no OL guru and would struggle to tell one guy from the other in regards to talents and upside.

Throw in some Lavauo commentary too if you can. I've read a lot of smack about that guy, but I seem to notice a fair amount of good plays by him too.

Jason has more power and strength than Greco and will only get stronger over the next few years. He is still learning to improve his technique and was starting to pick up on the little things that the vets already know about that will improve his play. Now don't thing I am putting Greco down I said before Jason got hurt that Greco was just as good as him right now, and he has proved that once he got some playing time, and he can also fill in at RG if we need him to. He is the sixth man on the line and he is very important to the team..

Now Shawn gets a bad rap from some fans around here who pay very little attention to the O-line. They only notice a O-lineman if it LOOKS like they got beat or if there is a penalty. Shawn was stuck playing beside a bum of the month club member all of last year which caused many people to blame him without cause. He actually played well last year, and with the RT position covered this year he is playing even better, and with this being only his second season starting (and 1st year with a real RT playing next to him he is playing even better this season) The future looks very bright for our O-line and will only continue to look brighter if we can keep these young guys together and continue to improve the depth behind them.

I like Greco quite a bit. He's a quality Boardman guy, after all.

Next year, let the 2 guys battle it out and whoever wins the job should be all the better for the competition.

How about we give Heckert and Shurmur, who knew him from STL, some props for getting him for a conditional 7th we never even paid, because he never started a game in his 1st season...we got Greco for nothing and he's a solid no5/6 OL....teams are hit and miss on mid round picks to find guys like this....and Greco was a former 3rd rounder and is from Ohio

not only that, but Heckert also got him to sign a 2 year deal for barely over minimum (725k/year) after his 1st season as a Brown, so he's here on the cheap through the 2013 season too

It's always a good thing to build quality depth and keep them around for a while.

Greco also grew up a Browns fan. It's nice to see one of those guys who was a Browns fan who later played for the team actually doing well. I mean, guys like Quinn were Browns fans, and were abject failures.

Jason Pinkston healthy, looking forward to playing next year: Cleveland Browns Insider | cleveland.com
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ss...t_flyout_sports

BEREA, Ohio -- Guard Jason Pinkston is grateful to be alive after his life-threatening blood clot and is set to return to football next season.

"I'm feeling pretty good, can't complain," Pinkston said in his first interview since being hospitalized Oct. 19 with a clot in his lung. "I'm working out, playing basketball just waiting to get back to next year."

Pinkston, who looked like his old, healthy, smiling self, added, "I feel normal, like nothing ever happened."

He admitted the episode "was pretty scary. [The doctor] said if I would've stayed in that game versus Cincinnati [Oct. 14], if I would've gotten hit or taken a shot or something like that, I could've probably died then, so I'm all happy about it that I'm still here."

Pinkston played sparingly during the Bengals game but was short of breath and became ill on the sidelines. He was rushed to the hospital five days later after his symptoms worsened. That's when the clot was discovered.

Doctors told him they're still not sure why he suffered the clot, but they were able to rule out a long-term condition. Pulmonary embolisms such as the one Pinkston suffered often begin in the leg and travel to the lungs.

"I could be one of the people it just happened, or I got rolled up in the game or something like that," he said. "They weren't too sure. All of my tests came back good. No cancers or anything like that, so, I mean, I'm excited about that."

He said the plan is for him to return to football next season. In the meantime, John Greco is playing well in his spot at left guard.

"Yeah, I still have to get an MRI or a CT scan before I start activities again," Pinkston said. "Since I'm not going to be doing that for the rest of the year, I don't have to get it until later on. They just have you on blood thinners for six months or so, so I'm coming down to two or three months left. . . . Other than that, I've been good, just relaxing and just watching the Browns win."

He said he's grateful to be able to resume his career.

"I mean, that's scary, especially not knowing," he said. "I was pretty sick with bronchitis that whole week and a little bit before, so I thought I was just sick."

While in the hospital, Pinkston was inundated with good wishes from teammates, coaches and fans, and it meant a lot.

"[My teammates have] been very supportive," he said. "A lot of visits to the hospital when I was there, so it's been good. Everything's been really good."
