Add me to the "last years Bama National Championship was crap" list.

They weren't the best team in their conference and they didn't even win their own division. NO WAY should they have been in the BCS NC game.

As for explaining why they won....."Any Given Sunday"...or in this case, "Any Given Monday Night" (or was it a Tuesday?). Meaning, any team could have beaten LSU that night (Akron, Toledo or Ok St). And yes, it helped Bama that they got a 2nd look at their team too.

Anyway...the past is the past. I should move onwards.

I'm just glad this whole 2-team BCS title game mess is almost gone. To me, a 4-team playoff is the best format. I don't think the 8th team in the country has an argument to have a chance at a title, maybe in professional sports but not college.

A 4-team playoff is the best mix....the regular season is still very, very important and you get a mini playoff. I can't wait. Too bad they couldn't start it this season.

I do like the 8-team playoff format because it does make the regular season extremely important (6 BCS conference winners + 2 at-large where 1 of those has some pretty strong possibilities of being a non-BCS team or ND).

However, I also like the idea of a 6-team playoff if you can get rid of the Big East being considered a BCS conference. That would be needed because you need to open up the last slot for ND and/or a non-BCS conference school. Give the top2 seeds a bye week like in the NFL and stage a playoff between the rest.

Right now, here is how it would look:

#1 K-State vs. Bye
#4 Alabama (SEC winner - Florida/Georgia) vs. #10 Florida State (or Clemson)

#2 Oregon vs. Bye
#3 Notre Dame vs. #14 Nebraska (if they rise to top12, otherwise likely Florida)

Nebraska (if they win the Big10) will be a top10 team by the time the season ends due to attrition. Florida State could very well be a top5 team if they can knock off the sometimes vulnerable Gators.

I wouldn't eliminate the possibility of having 2 teams from the same conference, but I would put obstacles in that path (only top12 BCS schools can qualify - so Nebraska will need to rise in order to get there otherwise the highest conference champion in the top12 would gain the slot. Seeing as none are present, the highest remaining team would gain it which will likely be Florida if they beat Florida State or any of the UGa/Bama loser/Florida/LSU/A&M/SoCar if they don't).

I think in time it will be 8 teams. I look at a team like Florida State that is 10th in the bcs. They had 1 bad half against nc state, but everyone will tell you they have the talent to beat anyone. Even Texas A&M. They just bama on the road. not too many teams could do that. They lost to 2 top 10 teams very close. South Carolina played Georgia, Lsu, and Florida in consecutive weeks. I'm sorry but not even Oregon wins all 3 of those games. The sec schedule is so brutal, to me a 1 loss team is just as good as Oregon, Notre Dame, and K State going undefeated. Even Saban said his team was drained last week after their game in Death Valley.

At 8 teams, you're just going to have more people crying about the SEC bias.

Unless you limit it to 6 conference winners, and 2 wildcards (which would be wrong, IMO).

This year, you'd be looking at at least 4 teams, maybe 5 SEC teams getting in the 8 team playoff

Alabama, LSU, Florida, Georgia, and possibly Texas A&M are all in the 8 team field.

Current BCS rankings, here would be your match-ups.

1 Kansas State vs. 8 Texas A&M
2 Oregon vs. 7 LSU
3 Notre Dame vs. 6 Florida
4 Alabama vs. 5 Georgia

You could very easily see an all-SEC final four.

Texas A&M vs. Alabama
LSU vs. Florida

Imagine the heads exploding then.

Speaking of playing the final on a Monday or Tuesday, while we're revamping college football can we play these games on Saturdays?

Doing this on a Monday or Tuesday is just stupid. I understand you get higher ratings because people are more likely to be at home on weeknight but it just sours the whole thing. College football is primarily played on Saturdays. Let's keep it that way for the most important games.

It was awesome when OSU won on that Friday night. It was incredible.

Top night for me of all time as a sports fan.

Kirby Smart is now an option for the Kentucky job again.

It will be Smart or Dykes.

I'm happy with either one.

I still say it's Dykes because I think Smart ends up with a better SEC job.

if you think you would ever get a system where people just plugged the top8 BCS without any indication of conference champions, then you are crazy.

top8 would definitively have some conference champion element involved (and it should). now, I think there should also be a bar that champion has to get over (top12 for a 6team, top14 for an 8team), but it definitely needs to be involved and you aren't getting all the conferences on board without it.

I don't think winning your conference should automatically qualify you.

Wouldn't the idea of an 8 team tournament be to determine the best team?

Would you really want a team like Louisville in there?

Oh, speaking of Louisville ... Coming from the "You won't believe this" file ...

Kentucky is 1-9
Louisville is 9-1

Kentucky has more wins over teams currently in the Top 25.

you apparently didn't read my whole post

top6 tourney includes provision that any conference winners need to be in top12 of BCS (at least). also, only way to do a top6 is to NOT include the Big East (need an at-large slot for non-BCS if any are worthy).

top8 tourney includes provision that any conference winners need to be in the top14 of BCS (at least)

Louisville would not apply to either case as they are #19.

------------------------------------

And the reason for the provision is that you want to determine the best team. The only way to prove who is the best team is to take a sampling of the best teams from across the country and let them play it out (which is one of the reason Oklahoma State should have been in last year's champ game).

Yes, the SEC is the best football conference and if things stay as they are now, then they will eat up the at-large bids in any year a conference champion does not meet qualifications. But, they still need to continually prove things on the field with the rest of the teams and not just each other

I think a conference champion would have to be in the top 10, top 12 at the worst. that at least allows you to lose a game or 2 depending on strength of schedule.

Those would be some great games. If Ohio State wasn't on probation they would be in there as well. I'm from the big 10, but sec football is the best brand of football at the moment.

IMO you take the top teams regardless of how many from one conference... if SEC has top 4 (or 8 if you're arguing for an 8 game playoff) then so-be-it... no heck the basketball tourney is 68 teams (I think) and you have people arguing over the 68th/69th position... whether you have 4 or 8 in football you'll have people complaining over the last spots. a 4 team playoff is awesome... personally I think we need to go to AT LEAST 8...

but this year I think it's OBVIOUS that we needed a 4 team playoff... I think all the top 4 teams are deserving a chance of a NC right now.

Oregon is one of the most exciting teams this year and has laid the hammer on some teams... of course their defense was horribly exposed by USC

KSU has looked to be a very complete and steady team this year and I'd really love to see them get a chance at the title...

ND, ok honestly I HATE ND... really, really hate them... and I mean who barely beats Pitt and BYU at home and thinks they have a chance at a title... but, they have beat everyone on their schedule and have had some big time wins against top 25 teams... that game against OU was just crazy!

and then there's Bama who obvously got exposed by a red hot Texas A&M, but they were also coming off a huge win against their rival at their place... tough to have back to back big games like that....

I could see any of these four teams winning the championship.... but then you look a little farther down... FSU, Georgia, and even A&M right now (ok I'm biased) could do well in a 8 game playoff...

ok ... but there is a espn/bcs bias towards the SEC. BCS is run by SEC commissioners former and past. I cant wait til they really consider strenght of schedule. Ohio st. get abused for playing MAC teams, but some of them arent too bad. The MAC winner always in top 20 end of year. You cant say the same about the sun belt or those D1AA's that the SEC play everyyear.

I really do believe this when I say a B1G schedule is more difficult than SEC. The SEC plays all these soft games mid year. Combine that with the creampuffs in the SEC. (Vandy, Kent, Tenn, ARK, Ole miss, Auburn). Thats half the conference. There are no weekin n weekout back2back tuff physical games to play all the time. They essentially get a bye week every other week.

The big 10 has been a joke for quite some time. This is coming from an Ohio State fan. They always get abused by the sec when they play in big games. No big ten school has a Georgia, Lsu, and Florida in a 3 week span. Same with bama playing lsu and a&m. I wish the big 10 would get better but the league has been down for years, just like the acc .

SEC has 3 consistently elite teams in Alabama, LSU and Florida.

Georgia and South Carolina are bipolar year after year, so I will never take them as serious title threats. Auburn will have a fluke year every once in awhile. Everyone else just sucks.

What have you been smoking?

I think what you mean (at least I'm hoping it's what you mean because it's the only way you sort of have an arguement) is that their out of conference schedule is more difficult than most SEC teams... which you can maybe argue for some of the teams like UM (taking on Bama and ND), Nebraska (UCLA), and MSU (playing Boise and ND)... but the reason the SEC doesn't need to go out and play so many great out of conference teams is because they get enough elite teams in their own conference.

Look... I'm an OSU fan and I LOVE the big ten... but the SEC has clearly been the best conference in football the last 6 or 7 years... You can take the top 4-5 teams in the SEC this year and they can play with anyone...

if you want to talk cream puffs... the big ten has 7 teams with 3 or less wins right now... OSU is ranked 6th in the country (and honestly has been carrying the conference the last few years)... you've got Nebraska at 16th and UM at 23rd... and the SEC has 6 of the top 12...

I'm hoping that the Big Ten will continue to get better with UM back where it should be, Neb being new in the conference but should be a consistent top 15 team, and hopefully PSU will eventually be back in the mix... but the Big Ten this year is probably the 4th best conference behind the SEC, Big 12 and Pac-12

I agree that they have had some very good teams the last few years. But thru n thru i think the SEC is overhyped. They have had better top teams than the B1G but I would say competition top n bottom week in and week out is above the SEC league. They hype up the top half of the SEC every year and to its credit... one and on occasion 2 of those teams have gone on to excellent seasons. The rest is fools gold. They get credit for beating up an overhyped team early. But at the end of the year those overhyped teams end up beating nobody and heavily favored against an underdog in the bowl. The big ten has done well against SEC in bowls, except for OHST.. And the big ten always seems to be playing up. Our third against their 2nd best team.

This Year who is actually a complete team thats good.
Alabama- even with their loss I consider them top notch team
LSU has come on and started playing well lately, early they struggled big time and didnt look like top10 team but still got benefit of the doubt. Tell that to Wis who loss to Ore St.
Georgia- very bipolar and hasnt really beaten anyone, Florida on their down spiral.
Florida- struggled early against a Mac team (BG), got a lil hot, and now has been playing horrible.
SC- tons of hype no results and without lattimore very suspect.
Miss. St- beat up on smaller teams no big win
Aub- dont know what the heck going on there... somebody's bout to get fired
Tenn- horrible
Kent-horrible
A&M- Young, coming off their best game but definitely has holes. Johnny football carrying that team.
Ark- horrible
Vandy .500 no big wins

I know big ten is down this year, but i honestly do believe the SEC is no where near it was the past few years. Lets not forget their refusal to play any games up north for a home n home.

And florida played Missu, Louisiana Lafayette, Jackson st. in the heart of their season this year Lets not forget they started off with a brutal Bowling Green, A&M, Tenn, & Kentucky.

Lets play again with Georgia
Buffalo, Mizzo, Fla int., Vandy, Tenn, got destroyed by SC. then they have that tough run down the stretch... Kentucky, Florida(down spiral'd), Ole miss, Auburn, Georgia Southern, and Georgia Tech.

Where are the tough games? Overhyped SC beats GA at home. Georgia barely beats a jekyl and Hyde Florida team who almost loss the last 2 weeks to nobodies, and SC only good win is against Georgia.. But these 3 teams are ranked in top 10? for what reason? The only big win they have are against each other and none of them I would consider proven or complete teams.

I would say Ohio states down "schedule" way tougher than Floridas.
And normally Purdue and Illinois would be bowl eligible competitive teams.

What ramifications were they supposed to feel? They went into that game ranked #3 behind Alabama and K State, followed by Oregon, LSU, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina....

Oregon beat USC, LSU lost to Alabama, Georgia beat Ole Miss, Florida squeeked out a win against Missouri, and South Carolina was off...

So Oregon jumped Notre Dame, Georgia and Florida both jumped LSU...

I'm not sure what you think should have happened... The only possible thing that could have happened is that Georgia could have moved up because their win over Ole Miss was more convincing that NDs win over Pitt... but should a 1 loss Georgia team move ahead of an undefeated ND team for beating Ole Miss who is 2-4 in the SEC?

The blind Notre Dame hate is hilarious to me.

Sure, they don't pass the eye test, but they're one of three undefeated teams. They're #3

And this isn't a Boise State schedule they played. They've beaten Stanford and won @Oklahoma.

At best Ohio State's and Florida's schedules have been about even. At worst, Florida's has been slightly tougher. Florida played a better MAC team in BG, and played A&M in week 2 whereas OSU played UCF, who have a good record but aren't in a good conference. OSU has also beaten Cal (barely...I was at that game...OSU caught a couple big breaks) and UAB, both 3-win teams, which is pretty much a wash with the cupcakes Florida has coming up. The second best team OSU will play this year will be 7-3 Wisconsin this week. How Purdue and Illinois typically are is completely irrelevant. They both stink this year, and one of them took OSU to overtime.

And despite all of that, if OSU was bowl eligible they'd most likely be ranked ahead of Florida by virtue of being unbeaten.

Look, I'm a Buckeyes fan, but to try and kid yourself that there has been any degree of difficulty whatsoever with their schedule this year is ridiculous. They've had about as much of a cakewalk to an undefeated season as any elite program could ask for. It's probably best for them that they can't go to the BCS championship game because, given how banged up their defense is and how much they've struggled with some teams they should've beaten handily (Cal, Michigan State, Indiana, Purdue), they probably wouldn't have fared very well.

here's a look at the efficiency stats (based on how teams do vs. how those teams did against everyone else they played and normalized, etc.):

I see what you are getting at, but I'm going to take this down a different path. I don't see how KState can be ranked ahead of ND if they both win out.

note: 2 common opponents

ND wins:
Stanford
Oklahoma
Michigan
Miami
*USC

KState good wins:
Miami (might win division)
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State?
Maybe *Texas (playing better but they have not been good) or TxTech their next best?

*yet to play

------------------------------

So, take out the Miami and Oklahoma common wins. Is beating TxTech, Texas and Oklahoma State this year better than beating Stanford, USC and Michigan?

I know. Oregon will have played Oregon State, Stanford, USC and UCLA(or USC again) if they win out the season.

of course, they have only played USC so far. they got burnt scheduling LSU last year, so they went with the non-competitive OOC this season. i hate that.

Oregon will have played USC, Stanford, and Oregon State (and USC or UCLA)

Notre Dame will have played USC, Stanford also.

I'll counter Oregon State with winning @Oklahoma

Is ...

UCLA
Arkansas State
Fresno State
Tennessee Tech
Arizona
Washington State
Washington
California

better than

Navy
Purdue
Michigan State
Michigan
Miami (FL)
BYU
Pittsburgh
Boston College
Wake Forest

And that's the rub. Who the heck knows. That why this system doesn't work. That is why you ned to have a conference champions playoff (with a couple wildcards to address the issue of good teams not in big conferences) if you want to determine a true national champion.

And if we had a conference champions playoff then the out of conference games would be better. Instead od Florida playing 3 games against teams like Florida A&M teams would mix in more games with better teams outside their conference to better prepare themselves because they wouldn't be worried that one loss to a good team outside their conference would eliminate them from national title contention in week #2. Nice side benefit for the fans.

And this isn't a Boise State schedule they played. They've beaten Stanford and won @Oklahoma.

Notre Dame has the best defense in college football but their offense is garbage.

those efficiency rankings will surprise you then. might be worth a click.

ND's issue has been that they have played really well against some quality teams and really poorly against some worse ones. their offense has been incredibly uneven.

their STs play though has been terrible throughout and I was happy to see that brought out in those rankings as well (as it could bite them vs. a team with great weapons like USC).
