So, I got to looking at rookie statistical performances so far, to see how our guys stack up against the rest of the league. Here are the rookie leaders in several categories: Passing: Weeden 2nd/5 in yards per game, 5th/5 in QB rating, 3rd/5 in passing TDs, tied 4th/5 in rushing TDs, 5th/5 in rushing yards, 5th/5 in INTs Code:

We do not have any rookie leaders for sacks or forced fumbles. What I think is interesting about this list is that we have a player in Josh Gordon of whom very little was expected this year and was considered to need the most work to be a valuable contributor, yet he seems to be a virtual lock for 1st-team all-rookie team, whereas Weeden and Richardson, expected to be plug-and-play players (as far as rookies go) would not even be second-team all-rookie guys. Schwartz is probably doing decently-well among rookie OTs, but clearly behind Kalil (who is blocking for league-leading Adrian Peterson on resurgent Vikings' squad) and Glenn (whose running backs average 5.4 yards per carry.) I can't say anything for the other rookie OTs. Any comments?

well, for Weeden, he was clearly behind Luck & RGIII in terms of being a prospect, so that part is not surprising (that he wouldn't be anywhere near the all-rookie team). I think he has played as well (or better) than Tannehill thus far but behind those other two (and Carroll has put the shackles on Wilson before this past weekend - be interesting to see how that plays out).
Richardson, I agree. Much more was expected.
And Gordon (and Robertson) have been pleasant surprises.
I'd think that Winn would be under consideration for all-rookie DT, but he doesn't have the numbers (we don't ask him to in our defense).

Craig Robertson isn't a rookie
A little disappointed in Weeden's yds/PA...but considering his 1st start, the fact that he's leading the league in rain games and his short pass happy HC, I think he'll be fine there with time (and a HC change)...he did have 3 games with a yds/PA well north of 8, so he obviously has a high ceiling but a low floor too

Yeah, that's true... Winn has done very well. I can't think of any rookie DTs that have really taken the league by storm this year. He definitely warrants consideration IMO.

I was really high on Steven Hill and was disappointed when we passed on him, but I like Gordon a lot and am glad we spent the 2nd to get him. Weeden Ranked 14th overall bodes well for the future.

well, that's in total yards. The Browns (therefore Weeden) rank 31st in the NFL in completion percentage, 30th in INTs, 31st in passer rating, 31st in yards per attempt, and in a 4-way tie for 26th in passing TDs. I'm not trying to criticize him, he is a rookie, but I can't really say the numbers paint a rosy picture of him, either.

My boy Lavonte David is all alone in first with 54 solo tackles. I knew he'd be a tackling machine. What I didn't know is that Tampa Bay would be #1 in rush defense at this point allowing 77 yards per game. Man I would have loved to see him in Orange and Brown. I will also say that before the season I liked what Tampa Bay was doing in the offseason and that they'd be the surprise team in the NFC. Loved the free agent signings and loved their draft. Watch out for them the rest of the way.

Don't Miss, that they are Not Missing Tony Pashos,/Cousins at RT, ... so Mitchell Schwartz is making himself usefull.
What happened to Ryan Miller, Hmm.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

OK, here are the updated numbers (offense only, since we have no defensive leaders) Passing: Code:

Richardson is 3rd in total yards and YPG, tied for last out of the 6 in YPA among rookie rushers in the top 40 in terms of yards gained, tied for 3rd in rushing TDs. Receiving: Code:

Gordon is now second in total receiving yards among rookies after Blackmon's monster game. His YPC average is only surpassed by Givens and is tied with Wright and Hilton for TDs. He is second among rookie WRs in YAC, 30 behind the leader Wright. Richardson is second among rookie RBs in receiving yards and first among all rookies with 290 YAC.

Looking at the stats, Weeden's completion rate, INT's, TD's and QBRating is on par with most of the other Rookie QB's. The only QBs that seem to be ahead of the pack from a STATISTICAL perspective is Griffin III and Wilson.

And the other QB's throw to much better, much more experienced and savvy WR's. You can only play with who you play with.
I'm too lazy to do the math leg-work, but I do wonder how the comparisons hold up if you were to throw out the high & low game for each player and the recalculate... the only reason I say that is I suspect that Weeden's opening game of horridness against Philly really holds down his averages.

+1 on both points. Weeden has the far better O-Line, but the rest of the QB's have far better WR's.
It's sad when Cribbs is our oldest and most experienced WR, and just happens to be our 4th or 5th WR.

And that Washington is 1st in the NFL in rushing ....
Seattle is 6th .......
Indy is 14th ........
Miami is 21st ......
and we are 27th.
We are the only team out of the 5 that averages less than 100 yards rushing/game.
We have 6 rushing TDs. Miami has 11. Indy has 8. Seattle has only 5, and Washington has 12.
The problem with this is that we traded up to the #3 pick to draft Richardson ..... and yet we haven't received the payoff for that move that we would have expected.

While true, I don't think anyone can refute how all the receivers bailed Weeden out against the Cowboys.
My point about the lack of sacks revolves around how lead-footed Weeden is, and how much time he's had in spite of being a statue.
In any other season we've used the lack of pass-protection as an excuse for the poor play of the QB. We can't do that this year. In fact, he's received above-average protection in that regard.
Ytown, you're right. We all expected better production from the run game. The ability of the line to pass-protect has been a surprise, but the inability to run-block has been equally as surprising. Too many fans believe that if you can succeed in blocking one aspect you should be good at the other. There are many teams where that isn't the case. Few offensive lines are good at both.
I think too many people are expecting too much out of Weeden, and I say that while remaining skeptical of his viability as a future starter. I would also say too many people are expecting too much out of Richardson. No RB can do it all by themselves, especially when heavily dinged.
Rookie RT, three rookie receivers, a rookie QB and a rookie RB...people's expectations are ridiculously high around here, considering all the rookies.

Of course, some will now redirect the blame back to the QB now, because at least 62.5% of Indy's rushing TD's are from the QB, and 50% of Washington's are as well.
We have a rookie QB, rookie RB, rookie RT and THREE rookie WR's and one 2nd year WR. The overwhelming majority of our skill players have three or fewer seasons.

Weeden may be "lead footed", but he knows how to move in the pocket. He doesn't have to take off running when he can take a step p, or to his side, and slide into the solid part of the pocket. That is an important part of the pass protection evolving as well. The OL knows where he is going to be, and they know where he is going to move to if things break down. He's not running blindly in panic. That helps the OL a great deal.
Micah 6:8; He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

He didn't have that in college. Then it appeared he had developed that earlier this year. Then in the last few games he seems to have lost it again. He certainly looked as though he had no feel in the pocket yesterday.

Before we start piling the woe on Weeden, Luck's 7 leading receivers are Reggie Wayne (who is awesome), Donnie Avery (who's never done anything but disappoint and be injured), two rookie WRs, two rookie TEs, and a rookie RB.

how could you even include foles into this? he's played how many games?
Kapernick looks like a real QB Weeden is on life support.
his big arm has gotten a rookie low 6.12 yds/a his completion % is the worst out of all rookies
Weeden has probably had more time to throw the ball than any other QB in the league.
He had several times yesterday with 5+ seconds to throw the ball and he's taken a sack because he doesn't get rid of the ball.
Gordon will probably end up with 800-900 yards. that's not too bad last year our leading WR had 709 (little) the second most was 518 not exactly anything to write home about.
Meh.

The 49'ers have built their team to be the opposite of QB dependent. They run the ball, and play great defense.
Kapernick has also been in their system for a year and a half. They have a legitimate ability to run the ball at any time. Also, there is a natural letdown sometimes when a starting QB is out.
Kapernick has looked good so far ...... for one half of football ....... but he looked awfyl in the pre-season ..... and this is his first real action. Plus his being sacked already 7 times in only 41 pass attempts doesn't say much for his pocket awareness.

A ton of people on this board laughed at the Niners for "wasting" a 1st round pick on Iupati. They aren't laughing now.
I think the Niners prove you aren't wasting money and picks if you invest heavily in your offensive line.
On the flip-side, you have the Bears. They went the budget route on the line so they could invest in other areas, and the Niners are destroying that line like no line has been destroyed in years. Cutler has been getting his ass kicked for two seasons, Aldon Smith has beaten Webb five or six times and Campbell just got knocked out of the game.
Hey...here's an idea...We've spent two 1st round picks and a 2nd rounder on our tackles and center. There are some 1st-round graded guards coming up in this draft. Wouldn't it be great if we managed to trade down, acquire more picks, get one of those guards, and some help at one of our many other areas of need...

true but he looks like he belongs in the NFL. He isn't a bum and the niners traded up three picks to get him with the 36th pick.
Meh.

And we have 2 first round picks in Mack and Thomas, and a high 2nd round pick in Schwartz, to go along with a 3rd in Lauvoa, and a former 3rd rounder in Greco.

Yup, and we're still two good guards away from having a really good line. Sure, they are doing a solid job in pass-protection, but we're missing the maulers at the position. Most recognize we suck when it comes to getting a regular push on the line.
I won't carry the conversation in two threads, but there are a couple of 1st round guard prospects coming up in this draft that would go a long way in making us a dominant offensive line...

Anyone that thinks we have the 7th best overall offensive line in the league is fooling themselves.

Actually, I think that they are doing their jobs. Unfortunately, because of injury or whatever, Richardson has not held up his end of the bargain. He is dancing instead of running DBs over. He runs tentatively instead of with authority. I see Hardesty, of all people, come in and explode through holes the OL opens, and wonder why he looks so much faster and more explosive than Richardson.
The OL has done a really nice job. They are getting better and better. They are opening holes. It's up to the RB to hit those holes once they are open.
