Complete Texans coverage After weeks of trying to get a draft choice for quarterback David Carr, the Texans have decided to release the five-year veteran, making him an unrestricted free agent who can sign with any team in the league.

The Texans also are releasing running back Domanick Williams (formerly Davis), their former leading rusher who has been unable to play because of a knee injury.

An announcement is expected later today.

If we can get him cheaply, maybe. I don't think he's much up an upgrade (if any) over Frye, however. If the powers-that-be think Charlie isn't the guy, I'd just as soon draft Quinn if he's there and be done with it (I don't want Russell, however -- too much of a boom/bust factor for my taste).

I don't think Minnesota is going to grab him (see Childress' comments in the other thread).

This one??

Quote:

• Minnesota: Second-year Vikings coach Brad Childress is another highly regarded offensive mind with no proven quarterback. The Minnesota depth chart, now that the Vikings have cut veteran Brad Johnson, features Brooks Bollinger and long-term project Tarvaris Jackson. The team is said to like Jackson's potential, but he is nowhere near ready to play yet. The Vikings might be interested in drafting Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn, but Carr would offer a more immediate return on their investment.

Childress badmouthed Carr so I doubt he goes there....

Miami is trying to get Green

Oakland Offensive line maybe worse than the Texans..

If I was Carr I would for a team that tried to improve their offensive line and has a top 5 pick * Cough Browns * Cough

If we sign Carr then our selection will be Thomas, Johnson, or Peterson (big surprise right?).....whoever is available in that order....

Another blurb to add to this thread:

web page

Whoever is deciding on what plays to run won't be sending them into David Carr. The Houston Texans are looking to unload the quarterback now that they have acquired Matt Schaub from the Atlanta Falcons, and some have thought Carr might be on the Vikings radar. But Childress was candid in his assessment of Carr, the top overall pick in the 2002 draft.

"I always struggled with where his release came from," Childress said. "It's kind of a drop-down, three-quarter, not overhand, over the top release. Just in the tape I've watched [since] he's been in the league, he can make some of the throws, he can't make all the throws. He gets some balls batted [down] at the line of scrimmage just because of where that ball comes from. ...

"He's a smart guy, he's a decent athlete but when you're buying a quarterback at this level and you kick the tires, there shouldn't be a lot of things that you're trying to straighten out."

Asked about Jackson and Bollinger -- Jackson has to be considered atop the depth chart at this point -- Childress said, "I like both my quarterbacks."

If Oakland signs this dude they obviously go with the #1 player in this draft in Calvin Johnson...Moss or no Moss...

That's gonna leave Russell for Savage to digest and me to REGURGITATE...

Sign the Mo FO already Savage...

Carr and Frye are a SOLID 1-2...

I know he's coming off a knee injury, but I'd be bringing DomanickWilliams in for a physical as well. Make sure you check your options before the draft.

I wouldn't mind seeing him here. If you look at his numbers and look at his situation, I don't think he's all that bad. I think Frye's had almost as many turnovers last year as Carr did in the last two year combined. People say he is damaged goods because he was sacked too many times. A running back takes more hits in a season then Carr has in his career.
If any thing he might be skittish, but not broke down because of the hits.
I really think we may get a clue into who Savage is eying in the draft by how hard we persue Carr.
If we go hard then he may be looking at Thomas or Peterson.
If he shows minimal interest then he will be looking QB in the draft.

I really don't want a QB in the draft, so i hope we at least bring him in for a look see and if they like him sign him. I'm alittle different on who i want, either Thomas or trade down a spot or 2 but no more.

I thought about that too. He would be a change of pace from Lewis, wouldn't he? That and the fact that I believe he managed a thousand yard season or two behind a bad line.

A few weeks ago there was some debate on here if we should try to trade for Carr,,, sure glad we didn't do that

At that time, I said I didn't have a problem with Carr coming here because he does have a strong arm and seemed to be mobile etc,,etc.. but you know what... The Texans have a new Coach.. One who is known for knowing QB's. (Kubiak)

So I had to ask myself,, after committing to Carr last season and taking a Dlineman in the draft when they had a chance to snag Vince Young, what was it that Carr did, or didn't do that caused Kubiak to want him dumped now?

The only thing I can think of is that they know he's beat up from all those sacks (256 or something like that), or he's so ruined, as in gunshy from all the hits he's taken, that it's not worth the effort to try and save him

I can't think of even one Positive reason for them to dump him.. So I had to ask myself, why in the heck would we want this guy?

I can't even come up with a decent reason to invite him in for a cup of coffee let alone bring him in as a player..

My only concern about my thinking is this, I didn't want Drew Brees last season because I was concerned that his arm might be gone.. (big miscalculation on my part that's for sure),, so I wonder, am I tossing Carr without thinking it out clearly,,, Don't know!

I think Savage has a man crush on Russell. If he trades up or even drafts Russell at three there will be a loooong line at Berea to kick him in the Yams.

I think you have to try to bring them both in for a look.
I mean we don't know how much it will take to sign them or what they bring to the table in regards to value untill you talk to them. I think smart people at least explore all of their options.

Question for you DinDayton...if we sign him does that mean there is no way we take Quinn.

I think if we sign him there is a very good chance that we still take Quinn if we thought he's a franchise QB to be our future QB...over Frye and over Carr.

And the Raiders are in worse shape than we are regarding QB...they got Andrew Walters who is a 3rd round guy as is Frye...but their backup is Josh Booty where ours is Anderson.

I don't think if we pick up Carr that changes our draft choice.

Of course your assuming that Quinn or maybe Russell is who we are going after... and that may not be the case...

Comes down to $... The man was owed some serious cash, far more than he had the chance to earn... I could be just as wrong with my assumption but I have no doubts it played a large part in his release....

I would take Carr any day of the week over Frye and twice on Sunday's....

I agree 100%. Carr was paid a huge bonus last season. It is a bad salary cap move for the Texans.

Kubiak turned Jake Plummer into a decent QB - but, gave up on this kid after 1 season. Something is wrong here. Steer clear.

We should sign Carr pronto just so Oakland and/or Detroit are more likely to take a QB in the draft, leaving us with Thomas. Otherwise, we run the risk of Quinn and/or Russell falling too far if Carr signs with either.

Hey, I have no problem throwing an offer out there for Carr. We don't HAVE to ffer a ton of guaranteed money and salaries can be high outside of the first year, then if we want to keep him, we pay for it...and that is what we will always have to do for a starting, solid, qb. No problem here if we can get him without a ton of guaranteed money!

Ummm, just curious. Why the heck did Dominack change his name from Davis to Williams? Did he get married? Seriously though, it's obviously not a religious thing.

Anyways, I say bring Carr in. I'm pretty sure with an improved OL and running game he's an upgrade over Frye. But I haven't watched him enough to know for sure. He's at least worth a look though.

I have no problem with them bringing in Carr. Competition at any position is a good thing. I just don't think we should set our expectations to high on what he is capable of.
