this is why I just cannot get into college basketball all that much until March. there's no point (other than watching for NBA prospects - love Shabazz).

Do you mean Shabazz Napier!

Cause that guy is gonna be giving it to Louisville tonight with potatoes and gravy baby.

Time to ruin that team's number 1 ranking, and show the ACC why we should have been selected over the Kentucky Cardinals! We beat Louisville in football this year, and now it's time to beat them in basketball. Suck it Pitino, UConn should have been invited to the ACC over your Cardinals.

You heard it first, UConn takes down the Cardinals tonight, as Shabazz Napier puts up 25 points, and the Huskies pull off a thriller

I wasn't just referring to college sports. I meant to include the NBA and MLB

If you don't think college basketball games don't matter in regular season rivalry games then I'm not sure what to tell you... they do matter, they matter a great deal to the teams involved.. but in the end, they don't matter nationally... Like Duke doesn't care who wins when Kentucky plays Louisville because it doesn't affect them, they will still go into the tournament with a chance to win it all..... in football if Alabama plays LSU, Oregon cares because it could affect whether or not THEY get to play for a national championship...

But when Duke plays Carolina... it matters.

well, the NBA regular season doesn't mean much either.

MLB does. A little more now that the wild card teams have to claw their way in with an extra game.

sure, a single game lost to a rival doesn't matter in the grand scheme (few go undefeated even against the worst teams), but winning the season series against your division is huge in handicapping the divisional races w/ unbalanced schedules.

For me I enjoy watching NBA games because of the level of play but night in and night out there's little to no meaning. And there are playoff rivalries but no regular season rivalries any more. It's millionaires playing millionaires and it's basketball but it's not full on I'm going to do anything to beat the other team types stuff.

The last regular season rivalry games that I can remember were back in the old Pistons days against the Bulls. They created the Jordan rules which was basically kick the crap out of him all game to wear him down / hurt him. And Jordan was pissed and wouldn't back down...even in the regular season.

Those were some great regular season games.

No it's hugs to start and hugs to finish...with the occasional Honey Nut Cheerios game thrown in there from time to time.

it wasn't that long ago that the new guys in the league would go full bore against the old guard and have extremely entertaining games as well.

lebron v. kobe
duncan v. shaq
shaq v. hakeem
anfernee hardaway v. reggie miller (don't know why i remember this one but it was good)

et cetera

i agree even that aspect is lost now. heck, Durant didn't even seem to get after it with LeBron in the friggin' Finals last year let alone the regular season. i think that era is long gone now.

you just lost to your chief rival and they ruined what had been a previously unbeaten season and your shot at the #1 overall ranking and you (and Beilein btw) seem satisfied with it.

How do you ruin a season half way way through?

But seriously, maybe you misinterpreted what I said. I was really disappointed in how Michigan responded early. They looked lackadaisical, like they thought they were just going to show up and win. You never want to feel like a team wasn't ready to play but honestly, by my amateur estimation, they were not. I blame that less on the coaches and more on the players. It's the one thing I was really worried about going in, that Michigan honestly hadn't even been tested through 16 games, let alone really challenged.

The reason I was encouraged was it would have been pretty easy to just pack it in, especially for a team that has so many (to this point) inexperienced guys. On the road, down HUGE, in your first big test and they don't just mail it in. Not only do they not mail it in but they rather methodically got back in it. They had 5 or 6 shots to take the lead late but just couldn't get one to go down. Sometimes it is just not your night.

Encouraged and statisfied are two different words by the way. Was I satisfied? Hell no...but is your expectation to win in Ann Arbor? Road games against top 15 teams are really rugged. @ Ohio State was maybe the toughest game on their schedule, so it is all relative. While it would have been a fantastic win, Michigan will lose a few more games this season, hell maybe even the next one......so it didn't really bother me (in the bigger picture). Do I want to lose to OSU? Well no, duh! But it happens.

As for Beilein, I'm not sure what you're insinuating. I think people misinterpret him, simply because he doesn't act like a lunatic on the sideline or show some unnecessary edge in front of the press. He always gives credit to the other team, never complains and just goes back to work. In an era where coaches wreak of self entitlement, I think it is refreshing. If anyone mistakes his calmness for complacency, well, I think you're crazy. He's taken a train wreck of a program and turned it in to a top 5 team. I think it is a good example of how a coach doesn't have to be overbearing or demonstrative to get his point across....to both his players and the officials.

@OSU is not the toughest game on your schedule. You're giving OSU more credit than they deserve. @Indiana is your toughest game, although I think they're a better matchup for you.

Ok I misunderstood you. But beilein said he was happy to lose. Don't worry about undefeated anymore.

Here's the coach Beilein quote:

Quote:

"This is terrific for us," said Beilein, in his sixth season of rebuilding Michigan. "Every coach will tell you that. When is the last team that didn't lose? It doesn't happen. The prosperous ones get better from it."

I certainly hope that even the rational fans that can agree with the context (losing a game is a good thing to take the pressure off long-term) would still completely disagree with it in terms of this particular game. He can think that all he wants (even with he Buckeyes), but I don't think saying it out loud is a good thing (at least it better not be - I'd be furious if the situation was reversed with Matta).

I think Indiana is a better team but Ohio State was Michigan's first tough road game. Just my opinion but that is what makes it a tougher game.

With no experience in such an environment and having not been tested by anyone all year, there's a huge difference between playing @OSU in game 17 and @Indiana on the road in game 24.

Michigan will have played @OSU, @Minny and @ Illinois before they go to IU.

He's saying teams get better from losses.

A college basketball team hasn't gone undefeated in what? Nearly 40 years?

I don't necessarily think alleviating some of the pressure, from a young team, is a bad thing.

Also, I think you're missing the context of his post game press conference.

The question was "with all the young players you play, will this help you down the road in tougher environments?"

He was talking about how the loss will help younger players get better and adjust as they get deeper in to their schedule.

I understand all of that but it's still the game vs. Ohio State. Just saying I'd be mad if Matta said the same thing about a loss to Michigan.

17-3 v. UM and 9-0 at home though.

Terps play NC State tonight.. NC State beat Duke on Saturday... over the last 20 years NC State is 1-12 in games following a win over either Duke or UNC.. hope that trend continues.

Lots of good games on this Saturday. It will be like March Madness. Looking forward to OSU vs MSU. It's always a battle between those two.

Terps beat NC State in arguably the ugliest college basketball game in the history of basketball.. the play was bad, the shooting was bad, the officiating was horrible all the way around.. but in the end, beating the #14 team in the country is good... the fans rushed the court... Don't do that when you beat the #14 team.. I know it was a hard fought last second win but c'mon.... act like you expect to win those games..

Now it's off to Chapel Hill this weekend to play the Tarheels... which is a winnable game...

They were favored too....

Im a huge State fan and that was a horrible game. Terrible all the way around. Hopefully state learns from it. You beat #1 doesnt mean your season is made. Now they drop into a big tie atop the conference. Dummies. Gotta play hard every game. Learn to deal with success.

Florida is a really good team. They are a tough match for teams like Duke and Indiana. I think they'd struggle with Kansas and OSU.

That was the worst offensive performance I've ever seen from Aaron Craft.

He's been this way all year. He turns the ball over with dumb passes and his handles have been bad. He can't shoot to save his life either.

1. He was being fouled

Or

2. Time was almost up

Butler game should be really good. I really hope Brad Stevens never leaves them.

It's just a limited team. Very disappointed Matta hasn't developed any of these guys. If Thomas hadn't returned this year, we would be at the bottom of the league. For being his 3rd year, Craft has been a huge disappointment. He should be averaging close to 15 pts by now just on experience alone. Same with Smith Jr, Thompson, and the rest. Ross has that upside, but still can't get consistent minutes.

I would be shocked if we won more than 1 game in the tourney. This is a 6-8 seed if you ask me. Nothing has changed all year.

I wasn't that impressed with Anthony Bennett when I saw him yesterday. He looked way out of shape. He definitely has the body type that can balloon him out of the league. He could barely stay on the court for a 5 minute stretch. He really needs to get into better shape if he wants to be a top 10 pick this summer.

Wow ..... Northern Illinois is 3-42 shooting, and 0-24 on 3 pt shots.

Hey, that sounds like Maryland numbers.. hard to believe with the quality of players the Baltimore/DC area puts out every year that Maryland can't find ONE that can shoot the ball half decent...

Even then, they still seem beatable.

I think this is going to be an awesome tournament. Hell it's awesome every year. It just seems like there is a pretty even level going into this one.
