Andy's basically going to get screwed out of a (so far deserved) All Star Game spot because Boston plays KG at Center and Roy Hibbert now has "name recognition"

The Spurs are in Miami tonight.
But Duncan, Manu, and Parker will NOT be playing.
It's the 6th game of a Road Trip. And Popavich is giving his older stars the night off for rest.
I have no problem with this.
What I DO have a problem with, is the outcry that the NBA should "do something" about it..
This is what's wrong with sports. People forget that it IS a sport, and are worried that fans in attendance, or watching on ESPN will feel "cheated" because all the stars aren't playing...
Waaaaaah..
Meanwhile, Pop is STILL fighting for the #1 seed in the Western Conference while giving his stars time off...

They need to suck it up. A lot of americans work crazy schedules all the time. The Spurs aren't winning crap anyway. Fans pay the money to see you play, if you can't handle it retire, and find someone that will work the schedule.

Laughable that the Spurs can dominate Miami all night without their four top players, and in the last minute Miami basically gets to mug the Spurs players on defense with impunity.

While I'd have a tough time suspending or fining the Spurs, I do think what Pop is doing is horsebleep.
Without the fans attending and watching at home the games mean nothing. And to essentially forfeit the game by sending your starters home is a slap in the face to the fans.
Imagine if you bet money on the game two days ago. Imagine if you bought tickets to bring your son or daughter to tonight's game as their first NBA experience. And imagine you're an company that bought ad time or the network that has been showcasing this matchup for a week. It's all thrown in the trash because Pop thinks this game is meaningless.
Again, I don't know how I'd penalize the Spurs or if I could.....but make no mistake, it's a horrible thing to do to the fans and league.

Marcellus Wiley was on Mike&Mike this morning talking about the Jets and 49ers starting a lineup that didn't have it's best players out there. And how it can tear a team apart. I understand this is a different situation....but Pop didn't put his best players out there for a big national TV game....he put his B squad and figured he'd lose....and he did.
It's a forfeit move and EVERYONE knows it. Heck, if his B squad almost beat them, his A team would have crushed them.

Popovich's responsibilities are to his employer, the San Antonio Spurs. If they are more likely to win more games due to his best players resting then that's what he should do.

We only know what happened.
Pop sat his best players and the Spurs lost.
We could technically argue anything could have happened....that Boris Diaw could have scored 101 points and the Spurs could have won....or that the game could have gone into 14 overtimes. Anything could have happened....but what could happen isn't up for debate.
Pop sat his best players and they lost. That's enough for me to be upset.
I don't think the NBA can fine or suspend the Spurs. But that doesn't mean I'm on the Spurs side.

I'd argue two points in your comments.
1. While he is employed by the Spurs, the league is what counts here. The league gets money based on ratings and fan attendance. If coaches tank games to save their older players, the games mean nothing and the fans see that.
2. Sure, I know a manager can sit a key player or two for a day game after a night game.....but this isn't one or two out of 10 players in baseball. This would be like a manager sitting EVERY starter on his baseball team because he thinks they all need a rest.
If he was sitting Duncan and playing the others....sure, whatever. Maybe sitting two......but all four?
I get that some of you are on his side. But again, imagine if you spent money to see this crap or bet money on the game. You wouldn't be happy.

If you're calling it "crap" I'm going to go out on a limb and guess you didn't watch. I was genuinely interested to see if a coach of the caliber of Pops could get his team up to play the defending champs without four of his best players. Considering that the Spurs were leading with less than a minute to go in the game, I'd say that he did a damn good job.
I don't tune in to watch stars, I tune in to watch enjoyable basketball. I got that with this game. Was I bummed to see the Spurs let it slip away at the end? Yep. Do I think that Miami got away with some incredibly over-aggressive defense at the end of the game? Yep. It was still a lot of fun to watch.

Why would I watch a game where the coach sat their best players and then lost? To me, it's irrelevant how close the game was. That's doesn't prove anything.
The Cavs lost by a few points to the Heat a week or so ago....that doesn't mean the Cavs are on par with the Heat. They lost.

Because 1 game out of 82 is not nearly as vital, especially early on in the season, as 1 game out of 16 is. For one, one game in the NBA will not make or break a season in the overwhelming majority of situations. Also, 53% of NBA teams make the playoffs every year, as opposed to 37.5% of NFL teams. Thirdly, the postseason in the NBA are series, not single games, which can favor the better team more than the hot team.
Hence, why I said "nowhere near" and not "is not".

I agree with you man. Just another reason why the nba is a bush league, always has been.
Sure Pop is doing what is best, but it sends the wrong message. If every team did this, the league would lose credability and go out of business.
The Spurs havn't won a title since 07 with their big 3. No matter what Pop does, it doesn't matter. The game is past Tim Duncan as an elite talent. Is he going to rest these guys if they have to play a few tough series in the playoffs.? Every team has a rough stretch of games. Deal with it or retire.
There's something about being a professional, and doing the right thing.

I definitely wouldn't be happy. But no one made me buy the tickets to the game or gamble.
Yes, it is nice to see star players, but the point is to win games, not to appease people. If resting players leads to more wins they should be rested.

Maybe that is the problem with a lot of teams. Playing to win the game is a short sighted approach. The goal is to win a championship. That is why NFL teams sit there stars week 17 when they have nothing to gain. Pops feel the best way for his aging team to win a championship is to rest his players during the season so that they are not worn out come playoff time (Like last years Celtics).
I have no problem with this move. As for resting all 4 at the same time, I think it is strategy. Do you hamper your team for one game and hope to sneak one out or do you sit them one at a time and hamper your team for four games thus risking losing 4 rather than one.
As for the gambling, that is why it is called "gambling" and not "win money".

Unfortunately, that's really the only place he has played well for any extended period of time. Does it make sense to use a spot in Canton on a guy who is almost certainly never going to be anything more than a Canton Charge?
I just don't see upside with Harangody.

Theres always career minor leaguers who hang around the leagues of various sports. Its good for the young guys to have a vet around, especially when he has spent time in the big leagues.
