It's possible some television viewers might have tuned out what turned out to be a surprisingly compelling game between the Heat and Spurs, and instead flipped the channel to Thursday's college and pro football games. The NBA went head to head with the NFL Network's broadcast of the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints.

ESPN

Ironically I turned it from ATL/NO to SA/MIA BECAUSE the Spurs starters weren't in the game...

Do I care about a November matchup between two teams? Not really.

But the undermanned Spurs hanging with the Heat? Leading them? Uh yeah, I'll watch that...

Popavich had a valid point to.

Had he rested the Starters against Orlando (not televised nationally) and flown them to Miami to play, no one would have cared, if even been aware.

Stern wants it to seem like some great injustice, but it's all about money...

Stupid.

here are my thoughts on the Pop's thing:

1. In MLB, a "getaway" day is considered smart baseball and nearly all teams do it. Pops brings it to the NBA and people cry foul.

2. I do understand though that this is the ONLY chance for Miami fans to see the Spurs this season. That stinks.

3. Pop's is incredible for his ability to see the whole view of rest. Yes, it is early in the season and these players might not feel tired yet. But, rest is important to get along the way if you want to be in peak condition at the end. It is one of the most difficult things to understand/do as it is counter intuitive to everything else you do in exercise (pushing yourself hard, etc.).

4. Stern doesn't have a leg to stand on. Would it have been better if Pop's started those guys and then benched them after the first minute? The NBA commish cannot dictate minutes for players. Ridiculous!

Imagine if you bet money on the game two days ago. Imagine if you bought tickets to bring your son or daughter to tonight's game as their first NBA experience. And imagine you're an company that bought ad time or the network that has been showcasing this matchup for a weekø It's all thrown in the trash because Pop thinks this game is meaningless.

I can honestly say I don't care about any of that. The only thing I can imagine is that I'm Pops and I've got an aging roster that I would like to have healthy and alive down the stretch and I've got my 4th game in 5 days on the road against a team I'm probably going to lose to anyway so I do what I've got to do to make this the best season I can for my team...

How will David Stern feel if they get to the playoffs and Tim Duncan is hurt and Wade is hurt and Rose is hurt and Kobe is hurt because of the way they schedule these games and because guys aren't allowed to take a break? How will the NBA feel then? If I'm the Spurs can I sue the NBA for forcing me to play my guys against my own judgement when they get hurt?

Anyone who has a problem with him sitting the starters is being ridiculous.

Popovich's job is NOT to sell tickets. It is NOT to get ratings. His job is to win championships. Resting your old guys on a 6 game road trip, he feels gives them the best chance to be healthy later in the season.

The NBA HAS ABSOLUTELY NO right to punish the Spurs for this. If they do, you're allowing David Stern to have control over how coaches coach their team.

Where does it end? First it's, you can't rest starters.

What if a guy picks up 3 fouls early? Will David Stern say, "Can't keep them on the bench the rest of the first half, the fans paid to watch them play!!!!"

What if Dwight Howard pisses D'Antoni off in practice and D'Antoni basically says, "I don't care if we lose, I'm sitting you for 2 games." Is the NBA going to call LA and say, "Hey guys, you gotta let Dwight do whatever he wants in practice. You can't sit him, the fans paid to watch him!"

This whole thing is ridiculous, and I don't see how anyone could possibly be on the side of David Stern here.

The last thing I'll say....

This isn't about resting a starter or two. This is about sending your entire starting lineup home before the game and going with your B-team in a nationally televised event.

It's one thing to sit your catcher and starting outfielder for a day game, but they're still in uniform on the bench. They can still PH. If they're needed, and the manager wants to use them, they are there. And it can create the illusion to the fans that the entire team is playing or at least can play that day. By sending all the stars home, it's a white flag. It's a forfeit (to me).

Pop knew what he was doing. He could have sat 1 or 2 the night before and then 1 or 2 last night. Or he could have sat the whole group the previous game. He chose last nights game for a reason....who knows why; to . Stern off, he knew the Heat would crush them anyway, etc.

And Pop does have a responsibility to the league, not just to his team. Without the integrity of the game and the fans support, there is no league for him to coach.

I know other coaches do similar things. They'll create a fake injury or two for some of the guys and then play the other starters long enough for the blowout to commence and then pull them. While it's neearly the same thing, it's not. At least the fans can argue the coach tried his best to field a team with the best chance to win. Pop did none of that. It was a quitter move.

Plus, there are no guarantees that they'll have a top 4 seed in the playoffs. Someone might get injured in 2 weeks, not related to fatigue, and then the fight to preserve home court in the first round is tougher...and they'll look back on giving up in one game as a mistake. Plus, getting a 2 seed versus a 1 seed could be the difference of advancing to the 2nd round too. I know nobody is going undefeated in an NBA season, but should they at least be trying to win every game?

I know nothing I type will sway anyone that already has their mind made up. Oh well.

It's not Popvich's job to worry about the fact that it was a "Nationally televised event"

I don't know about you, but if I were a Spurs fan and after the game Pops goes, "Well, I wanted to give these guys some rest, but it's a nationally televised event, and I gotta give the fans what they want." I'd be IRATE. You coach your team, let everyone else worry about the other stuff.

I understand what you are saying... do I think, knowing a little about Popovich, that he was flipping off the NBA by doing this the way he did it? Probably he was.... That still doesn't give the NBA the right to do anything about it.

I think the most ludicrus part of this is that Stern is complaining that Miami fans didn't get a chance to see San Antonio's "stars" ... as if it's the one game a year that the poor Miami fans get a chance to see All-Star level players on the court.

But letting all-star player's collude to join up on the same team ... that's okay.

if all the players need rest, then why lower your chances of winning in multiple games when you can lower them for one game that you were under 50% to win in the first place?

I love how Poppovich doesn't give a crap about anything other than coaching basketball. Hates the media, doesn't care about pissing off fans, no flash, no nonsense, just down to business, and does it at an all world level. A dying breed, unfortunately.

I wonder if a big stink would have been made if this matchup were on a Tuesday night broadcast only on local San Antonio and Miami tv stations? This was a TNT game. I wonder if Stern felt the pressure from network execs who were griping about the lack of star power on both sides in the game.

Either way he has no right to hand down sanctions. What a joke. You're going to go after the most respected coach in the league? The guy is an embarassment, and the worst part is the guy taking over will pretty much be a clone of him since he's been shadowing him for the last 5 or 6 years.

The guy has done some amazing things for the assocation, but when people compare him to Vince McMahon (which is hilarious BTW, and really eats at his skin) they aren't THAT far off.

considering the Spurs have sat their stars before, I think it being the TNT Thursday game is a HUGE part of why this became a big deal.

The Spurs got lucky. The fine for resting your four best players and beating Stern's hand made dream team on national TV is $750,000.</purple>

The New Orleans Hornets are expected to become the New Orleans Pelicans, perhaps as early as the 2013-14 season, according to a Yahoo! Sports report.

Yahoo! Sports, citing numerous sources, reports the team also considered Krewe and Brass as potential nicknames.

The Hornets have planned to change their name since New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson, who also owns the rights to the Pelicans nickname, bought the team in April.

Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan said in November he'd be interested in bringing the Hornets' name back to Charlotte.

"It's definitely an interest down the road, but right now it's the New Orleans Hornets," Jordan told the Charlotte Observer. "We would definitely entertain the opportunity. That's as much as we can say right now. We've heard the community ask the question, and we would listen."

The pelican is Louisiana's state bird and appears on both the state seal and flag. A New Orleans minor league baseball team held the Pelicans nickname in all but nine seasons from 1887-1959, and again in 1977.

The Hornets moved to New Orleans from Charlotte in 2002, and when Benson bought the team earlier this year, he said he would like to change the name to something more fitting of Louisiana. His wife, Gayle, reiterated that idea and added that the franchise also would like to change the team colors from teal and purple to red, gold and navy blue.

I don't really care if they change their name but Pelicans sounds kind of weak. New Orleans has so many cool things, surely they can come up with something better than that.. or is it all about the naming rights he already owns?

it couldn't cost all that much to buy the "Voodoo" name off the Arena team, right?

or share Ragin' Cajun's?

or sign Delonte and go with New Orleans Hot Sauce?

Brass would have been a good name. Voodoo would be another great name, but it is already taken. Pelicans is a really weak sounding name. Maybe the next professional team can be called the "Little Birdies". That ought to strike fear into opposing teams.

I mean is the logo to be a fat bird with a basketball in his beak or what? It's almost as if they chose Pelicans because of child friendliness (you know kids are going to be all about some fat, goofy big-beaked bird flopping around court-side).

The Cleveland NBA team is the Cleveland Corpses with both Kyrie and Dion out.

At least Andy had his traditional double double ...... but we didn't have anyone score over 14 points tonight.

Ugly game. It wasn't as close as the final 10 point margin would indicate from the parts I watched.

Well, in fairness, we do have Kyrie and Dion both siting out with injuries. That's hard to replace.

I would like to thank the Toronto Raptors for helping OKC become a potential dynasty. Yeah just give Durant and Westbrook a top 5 pick to play with. They look like they really need the help. I like Harden but damn, give OKC a dominating offensive big man and watch out.

The Portland Trail Blazers shot 0-20 on 3 pointers tonight, an NBA record for most 3 pointers attempted without a make, and still won by 18. They had 2 starters that shot a combined 4-26 and they still dominated
