It's easy to be the best defensive team in the league when your players are allowed to rape the other team whenever they want...

Is it still considered tanking if the team sucks?

Tanking usually entails healthy players not playing. When Irving mysteriously has an injury that no one knows how he got, that's tanking.

The Maloof family that owns the Sacramento Kings has reached an agreement to sell a 65 percent controlling interest in the franchise to a Seattle group led by hedge-fund manager Chris Hansen and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, according to league sources. Sources told ESPN.com that NBA teams were formally notified Sunday night that the Kings have been valued at $525 million and that the parties have executed a purchase agreement, which still requires league approval. The agreement to transfer the 65 percent majority stake in the Kings to the Seattle group represents the 53 percent owned by the Maloofs and an additional 12 percent from minority owner Bob Hernreich. Sources said that there has not yet been an agreement submitted on the remaining 35 percent of the franchise, which is held by minority shareholders, not the Maloofs. One source close to the process told ESPN.com's J.A. Adande that the Maloof family, as it was hoping, will retain a "small piece" of minority interest in the franchise after its expected relocation to Seattle and renaming as the SuperSonics for next season. It's believed, though, that the Maloofs will hold no decision-making power once control of the franchise is transferred. The deal, according to sources familiar with the specifics, calls for the Maloofs to receive a non-refundable $30 million deposit from the Seattle group by Feb. 1. The NBA, furthermore, is fully expecting Hansen to apply for relocation to Seattle for the 2013-14 season by the league's March 1 deadline, enabling the league's board of governors to vote on the application at their annual April meeting. But Sacramento officials are not surrendering their long-running bid to keep the franchise in the California capital. Mayor Kevin Johnson, formerly an NBA All-Star with the Phoenix Suns, continues to lobby NBA commissioner David Stern for the right to present a group of local owners who can match the Seattle offer and finally build a new arena in Sacramento directly to the Board of Governors. "The mayor of Sacramento has asked me ... could I come in and address the board of governors or the relocation committee?'" Stern said last week before the New York Knicks played the Detroit Pistons in London. "And I said, 'Always.' ... Sacramento has been particularly supportive (as an NBA community since 1985 and is) always welcome to present." According to Yahoo! Sports, which reported earlier this month that the Maloofs were in serious talks with Hansen and Ballmer, Seattle's plan calls for the Kings to play two seasons in the SuperSonics' old home downtown at KeyArena while construction is completed on a new building. Johnson, meanwhile, revealed last week that he had received approval from Stern to present a counteroffer to the league from buyers who would keep the team in Sacramento and said his city is in a "six-week sprint" to put together a proposal. The sale price of $525 million, sources said, is regarded as an overall valuation of the franchise and also includes relocation fees. Given the league's desire to bring a halt to the long-running saga caused by the Kings' uncertain future in Sacramento, as well as its hope of seeing NBA basketball return to Seattle before Stern's scheduled exit from the league office in February 2014, approval of the move by the NBA relocation committee is widely considered to be a formality. The committee features several current NBA owners and is chaired by Clay Bennett, who controversially moved the original Sonics to Oklahoma City in 2008, but left behind the team's nickname and logo. Plans for a new $500 million arena in Seattle were approved in October. Miami Heat star LeBron James took umbrage at news of the deal, tweeting: "So the Kings getting sold for 525M!! And the owners ain't making no money huh? What the hell we have a (lockout) for. Get the hell out of here." Information from The Associated Press was used in this report. http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/886409...eam-sources-say

*Sigh* More "good" news for Andy ..... Anderson Varejao out for remainder of season after developing blood clot | cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/...t_river_defaultCLEVELAND, Ohio - Anderson Varejao will lose another season, this time because of a blood clot that developed in his lung Thursday and will force him to remain on blood thinners for three months, the Cavaliers announced Monday. The clot occurred after Varejao had surgery Jan. 10 to repair a hamstring injury that was expected to keep him out 6-8 weeks. The clot was discovered a week later, and Varejao was admitted to the Cleveland Clinic, where he is undergoing treatment and observation, the Cavaliers said in a release. He will need to remain on blood-thinning medication for three months, forcing him to miss the remainder of the season. Varejao had been enjoying his best season in the NBA until suffering the injury Dec. 18, averaging 14.1 points and 14.4 rebounds per game. This marks the third consecutive season Varejao's season has been cut short because of injury. Last season, he played only 25 games because of a broken wrist. Two seasons ago, he managed just 31 games because of a torn ankle tendon. "Clearly, our players' health is our top concern and we are disappointed for Anderson, and his family," Cavaliers general manager Chris Grant said in a release. "We know what a competitor he is and how much he wants to be on the court helping his teammates. In the meantime, he has our full support, and we look forward to welcoming him back as he recovers."

Not saying it's his fault, but at this point I think it's best to dump him any way you can in the offseason. You can't depend on him, at all, and you need to move forward without him in any plans.
Cut him, trade him for a second round pick and a rack of balls - doesn't matter. It's time to go.

This is EXACTLY why I wanted to get rid of him years ago. People got to emotionally invested in to him being a blue collar type. It was a mistake to pay him what we did.

He is salary is great for a player that doesn't get injured. The Cavs should have pulled the trigger on him multiple times but their asking price was always too high.
This season they asked the Clippers for Eric Bledsoe and DeAndre Jordan for Varajao.

The problem is that Andy is a top tier player when he's healthy ...... but he's never healthy anymore. I was against trading him, and that looks like it was a mistake at this point. I really wish that we could somehow trade him in the off-season for a solid outside shooter. I think that this team has several very good pieces ...... Irving, Thompson, (who had really come on, becoming Mr. Double Double in Andy's absence) Waiters, Zeller looks to be coming on .... Miles can have big games ..... Gee can be a solid contributor, maybe as a backup on a good team ...... *Sigh* I don't even know anymore. I almost do buy into Cleveland being cursed. We have some nice pieces, and still suck. Guys are playing better, yet we still lose. There has been all of this talk about James maybe returning in 2014 ...... but I doubt it. He'll wind up in LA as a Laker ....... after playing us again ...... and we'll let it happen ...... I dunno anymore.

Honestly, I don't even want to talk about LeBron James and whatever stupid stuff he's getting into these days. He's a liar and a fraud in character. The Heat winning it all last year allowed me to just stop watching NBA for this entire year. I don't want to see a minute of it because of biased refs and the "Angel of David Stern" having a hand in things. Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if the NBA execs roll out the red carpet for the Heat to repeat this year. Talk about integrity of the product...
Just how I feel.

Somehow Chris Grant turned Jon Leuer into three role players and a 2015 top-5 protected 1st round pick.

Umm ...... I don't know for sure ....... but any trade that gives you a future 1st round pick and anything else for Jon Leuer seems to be a pretty solid trade for the Cavaliers. Cleveland Cavaliers dealing for Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington, Josh Selby and 1st-round pick from Memphis Grizzlies for Jon Leuer | cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/..._special-reportINDEPENDENCE, Ohio - An NBA source has confirmed to The Plain Dealer a pending trade that would send Cavaliers forward Jon Leuer to Memphis for big man Marreese Speights, guards Wayne Ellington and Josh Selby, and a valuable, future first-round pick. The trade could be completed before tonight's Cavs game against Boston. Leuer, a 6-10 center, is in his second year out of Wisconsin. He has appeared in nine games for the Cavaliers this season, averaging 10.1 minutes, 2.4 points and 1.4 rebounds per game. He has spent time with the Cavs and their D-League affiliate, Canton, this season. Speights is a 6-10 forward/center in his fifth year out of Florida. He has played in all 40 games, averaging 14.5 minutes, 6.6 points and 4.7 rebounds per game. Jan. 4, starting in place of Zach Randolph, Speights had season highs of 22 points and 13 boards in an 86-84 loss to Portland. Ellington, a 6-4 guard, has played in 40 games this season and has averaged 16.9 minutes, 5.5 points and 1.1 assists per game. He played his previous three NBA seasons with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Selby is in his second season out of Kansas. The 6-2 point guard has appeared in 10 games, averaging 5.9 minutes, 2.0 points and 0.4 assists per game.

Can someone explain to me how this is a lottery pick? How can you determine a future pick will be a lotto pick?
Also, I keep meaning to ask, our pick from LAL is non-conditional, right? lol
*wasn't mentioned in that article, but several NBA people are saying this is a likely lotto pick, including Windy and Jason Lloyd.

Wait, the Cavs have an additional 1st in the upcoming draft....and it's from the Lakers (who are currently in the lottery)?

not true. the Lakers swap is lottery protected. the one year we need them to make the playoffs, they are likely going to miss them.

Here's the info for the 1st rounder we get from Memphis: Quote:
The Cavs will receive Memphis’ first-round draft pick in the first available year (which is two years after Memphis has satisfied its current pick obligation to Minnesota).
Starting in 2015, the pick could be conveyed to the Cavaliers. The pick is protected Nos. 1-5 and Nos. 15-30 in 2015 and 2016 (meaning the Cavaliers could acquire a pick from Nos. 6-14 ).
The pick is protected Nos. 1-5 in 2017 and 2018. If the pick has not been conveyed by 2018, it becomes unprotected in 2019.

We have the Heat's 1st round pick, which we can swap with the Lakers as long as they are not in the lottery,
The Memphis pick is complicated. (what in an NBA trade isn't?)
Cleveland Cavaliers obtain Marreese Speights, Wayne Ellington, Josh Selby and 1st-round pick from Memphis Grizzlies for Jon Leuer | cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2013/01/cleveland_cavaliers_obtain_mar.html#incart_2box
The first-round pick will be Memphis' pick in 2015 or 2016.
However, the pick will stay with Memphis if it lands in the top five of the draft or in spots 15-30.
If the pick is in 2017 or 2018, Memphis retains the selection if it is in the top five.
If the pick is pushed back to 2019, the Cavaliers will receive the pick no matter where it falls.

Because it pretty much has to fall between the 6-15 range to become our pick ... and anything less than 15 is in the lottery. The only way it doesn't become a lottery pick is if Memphis goes to the playoffs every year through 2019.
At any rate ... a first round (probable) lottery pick for Jon Leuer?? Really?!?
The Laker pick is more or less an option to swap the Miami pick and trade up into the draft for free, but the Lakers have to squeak into the playoffs first. If they don't get into the playoffs, then we'll still get the Miami pick, which will most likely be at the back end of the first.

Here's a nice breakdown of all the potential draft picks we have from RealGM: Quote:
* 2013 first round draft pick from Miami Miami's own 2013 1st round draft pick to Cleveland (top-10 protected in the 2013 Draft, top-10 protected in 2014, and unprotected in the 2015 Draft.) [Cleveland - Miami, 7/9/2010]
* 2013 first round draft pick from Sacramento Sacramento's own 2013 first round draft pick to Cleveland (top-13 protected in 2013, top-12 protected in 2014, top-10 protected in 2015, top-10 protected in 2016 and top-10 protected in the 2017 Draft) If Cleveland has not received a first round pick from Sacramento by 2017, then Sacramento shall convey their own 2017 2nd round draft pick to Cleveland provided it is within the top-55 picks. If it is not, then Sacramento's obligation to Cleveland shall be extinguished. (Cleveland-Sacramento, 6/30/2011)
* 2013 first round draft pick from L.A. Lakers Cleveland has the right to swap the least favorable of their own 2013 1st round pick, Miami's own 2013 1st round pick (top-10 protected) and Sacramento's own 2013 1st round pick (top-13 protected) with the L.A. Lakers own 2013 first round pick (top-14 protected). If the L.A. Lakers own 2013 first round pick is #1-#14, then the L.A. Lakers' obligation to Cleveland shall be extinguished. [Cleveland-L.A. Lakers, 3/15/2012]
* 2013 second round draft pick from Orlando Orlando's own 2013 2nd round pick to Cleveland. [Cleveland - Orlando, 6/23/2011]
* 2014 second round draft pick from Memphis Memphis' own 2014 2nd round pick to Cleveland. [Cleveland - Memphis, 7/25/2012]
* 2014 second round draft pick from Orlando Orlando's own 2014 2nd round pick to Cleveland. [Cleveland - Orlando, 6/23/2011]
* 2015 first round draft pick from Memphis Memphis' own first round draft pick to Cleveland in the first available draft which will occur 2 years after Memphis satisfies their obligations to send a future first round draft pick to Minnesota via Houston. This pick is (top-1-5 & 15-30 protected in 2015, top-1-5 & 15-30 protected in 2016, top-5 protected in 2017, top-5 protected in 2018 and unprotected in the 2019 Draft) (Cleveland-Memphis, 1/22/2013)
* 2015 first round draft pick from Miami Miami's own 1st round draft pick to Cleveland in the "First Allowable Draft" (top 10 protected until the 2017 draft at which it will be unprotected in the 2017 draft). The First Allowable draft shall be the draft that occurs two years following the year in which Miami satisfies its first obligation to convey a future first round draft pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers. [Cleveland - Miami, 7/9/2010]
The Miami pick is interesting. We don't even have to use it this year. We can wait until 2015 when the pick becomes completely unprotected ... or we can "cash it in", and then swap it for the Laker's pick if they squeak into the playoffs. After we use that first pick ... we have the option to take another of Miami first rounders two years after we cash in the first.
I'm thinking that even if the Lakers do get into the playoffs, we don't bother swapping anyway. Just think ... say Lebron opts out in 2014 and signs with someone else. Miami could completely suck in 2015, and we'd have the unprotected rights to their first rounder! If they continue to suck for another two years, (hey, they missed out on the 2015 draft) we'd have another unprotected pick in 2017!

Miami could be awful in 2015, all 3 of those guys can opt out. I wouldn't be surprised if they all do.
I think Lebron and Bosh do. Both have good value on the market. What is Wade worth? He may have to take a pay cut for one year just so he can maybe get extended for more. I could see a situation where Wade is there by himself and maybe they add a few OK pieces. That is still a potential lottery team. I think it is more likely Lebron leaves Miami than stays. I'm not guaranteeing he's coming back to Cleveland but if I had to bet, I feel pretty confident in saying that he's at least gone from Miami. He left Cleveland because he didn't think he could win there, don't think he'll leave Miami when he realizes Dwyane Wade is damaged goods, and Bosh has no-showed on too many big occasions past April.
Hopefully the Cavs can make something with all these picks. They need to find one other superstar player, and hopefully that will be with this top 3 pick they are staring at right now. They also need depth at the forward position, and an outside shooter or two.

gotta love the desperation of Memphis to get under the luxury line without giving up one of their corps guys (most rumored Gay).
and gotta love Chris Grant's ability to sniff out that desperation and be the team that gets the deal done.
I keep seeing how he shouldn't get credit for some of these moves (like the Clippers, etc.), but he is going out there, finding them, and making them. keep banking non-assets for assets (guess the cap space and willingness to pay useless salary is an asset).

How can anyone not give credit for that Clipper move. If that didn't happen, we'd be staring at Tristan Thompson as our centerpiece. Ugh.

i have seen it in many places (and usually fans not writers, but still) saying that Gilbert deserves all the praise for that move due to his willingness to eat Baron's contract.
i think that's ridiculous. yes, Gilbert gets credit for taking on the salary, but Grant found the trade, convinced the Clips to leave the pick unprotected and completed it when other teams in our situation also knew LAC wanted out of Baron.
and, I also love how you will never again see a NBA trade with an unprotected pick.

would that be better than TT as our centerpiece? if we get TT, then maybe we also get Lillard (not on Irving's scale, but still). lots of what-ifs if we go down this road.
(analytics hated Kemba though - so, very good chance we don't have him)

Thompson is looking more like a centerpiece than he did earlier on in his career. He has become a nice double double machine, and his offensive game has improved without he and Andy, essentially, fighting for the same shots and rebounds.
He hasn't yet become a 20 PPG guy ...... but I think that he can become a 15/15 guy as he continues to develop.
I think that many teams would take that from their 1st round pick last year.
Derrick Williams, who many, myself included, thought might and should go #1 overall averages 9.3 PPG and 4.4 RPG.
Kanter is OK, but not special. Zeller is outplaying him so far.
Jonas Valanciunas is similar .... OK, but really maybe on a par with Zeller.
Vesely is so-so so far.
Biyombo is decent, but not at Thompson's level.
I look at different players in that draft and I struggle to find many doing as much as Tristan Thompson. (except his teammate, Irving)
Now part of that is being throw into the fire as a younger player out of need .... but he has responded.

Memphis sent big man Marreese Speights, guard Wayne Ellington, guard Josh Selby and a future first-round draft pick to the Cavs for forward Jon Leuer.

I like Speights.
Yeah I probably would've been happy with him straight up for Leuer lol, a straight up fleecing by the Cavs. Well done.

Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

We have 8 draft picks the next 3 years. I bet we make a trade. I wouldn't mind Demarcus Cousins.

He'd be a wonderful peice to add to this team. He's just like... Legit crazy... Which isn't always a great thing, He'd be awesome on a team of vets that could keep him in check, but, just like SacTown, we're a young team... I just really hope we can get SOMEONE in here to turn this around... I just don't see any LeBron's (I don't even need a LeBron, I'd settle for a Wade or a Bosh, just as long as they aren't a Darko) out there who are going to come here and help us win 40 games right away... At one point I honestly thought we had enough talent to fight for a 7-8 seed... Now it feels like we're still 3 years away...

I trust Irving to keep the crazy in check. He'd feed him and make him happy in a way Isiah Thomas Jr. just cannot. Speaking of the Irving, does anybody else love how he just took the "best defensive PG in the NBA" title from Rondo and shoved it down his throat. no, Irving doesn't get the title, but he sure made it look like Rondo is a poser with it

I didn't watch tonight's game, but looking at the numbers, Tristan Thompson looks like he had a good game with 21/9. It looks like Walton had a decent overall game as well, with 7 points, 3 assists, and 7 assists in 18 minutes. That's pretty strong for a guy whose best days are well behind him.
