Columbus, how do you know that the people Paco lives near don't primarily hate living under Obama as president because he's black? You're not there. It is like a different world here... Stuck in a time warp. I'll tell you, for as liberal as Austin likes to think it is, black people still get treated like second class citizens here. I had a conversation at work last week with someone around my age who grew up in Texas who won't even go to certain cities and won't even drive through Waco.

I dont see anyone on this board calling for succession. And I dont feel that many conservatives on this board feel that way, because of race. They have strong intelligent opinions. But there is a couple on here who i get the sense that its a race thing more than political belief thing.

You need to get out more. Cuz it definitely is a factor with many across the country. Hell, half of them still believe he's a Muslim and not an American. And FYI ... I live in the south.

I don't really need to get out more. I've traveled quite a bit for my business, probably been to 30+ states and a few countries - I just don't see the rampant racism that continually gets brought up. I'm not saying it isn't out there by any means, but your statements are just as much of a catalyst to stoke the racism fire as those who are racists IMO. Sure there are morons that still dislike Obama because of his race or perceived religion - I think that is in the minority. Most dislike the guy because of his liberal beliefs - I personally think he is going to keep the accelerator to the floor until our ultimate demise. We've been heading down a path to our own destruction for far too long - I hope and pray I am incorrect about Obama and the rest of our elected officials. I hope they can reach some compromises and get things done to try and circumvent the coming financial collapse. I love this country and all of the opportunities it has given to me; there are few places on earth where hard work, passion, and dedication can be rewarded like they can be in the USA.

Thats how basic their beliefs are in the south. You take Obama... Northerner, democrat, and black.. Well you get my point. It doesnt matter what his politics are... they will still hate him.

Well, from my time in Texas for work (Dallas, Austin, San Antonio) I'd have to say they hate us Yankees just as much. Austin wasn't bad - actually one of my favorite cities in the country - but Dallas, sheesh, one of the directors I worked for was literally upset because "his daughter was marrying a Yankee". Again, I'm not saying that racism isn't around still, but I just don't believe that it is to the level that everyone says it is. Maybe I am just naive. My exposure to the south is primarily NC, SC, Georgia, and Tennessee. I've been to Alabama and Mississippi as well but did not spend a lot of time there. I work a lot in western Virginia, though I really don't consider that the south. I guess I just haven't met a lot of people that have that much hatred due to race.

Race plays a role, but I'd never call it the sole driver. It's the straw man idea of who he is.

Again, no one who is petrified about going off the cliff seemed too concerned when it was their team.

If Obama was a GOP candidate (which he actually closely resembles), the outrage would be minimal.

I don't think so. I've been petrified since about 2005. I saw the houses that were being sold around me and wondered how all of these people could afford them - turns out they couldn't. I started preparing for the future at that point to make sure I could make it in a world that collapsed because I really do fear that is going to happen. Bush was horrible and Obama just added fuel to the fire. If a GOP candidate did the same thing, I would be just as upset. Our country is a skeleton of what it once was and it does not seem any of the elected officials in Washington even care.

traveling for business and living in an area is two different things. I have lived all across the US. Va, Tx, Fla, Cal, OH, Conn. Mass., GA, AZ And been to all but 6 states. It surprises me sometimes how open and racists some people can be. Every area is different. Dont get me wrong their are plenty of racists minorities towards white as well. So its not completely one sided. But it is out there and more so in the south and the midwestern plain states, but even in rural Ohio you will find a few as well.. But definitely not as much as down south.

Similar petitions from other states have also been filed including: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Tennessee. However, unlike the petition from Texas, none of these states had reached the 25,000-signature threshold to get an official White House response as of Monday evening.

So, people that are tired of where our fed. gov't. is taking the country are "backwoods bigot losers...."? I like your tolerance level.

with all due respect Arch, but I think your being a little hypocritical, when certain posters are criticall of our government you have questioned their patriotism. Now these people want to leave the country and you justify it.

plus Puerto Rico is most likely going to have a vote for statedom soon, and polls show it should pass this time, it was real close last time. I know PR wouldnt be a huge amount of electoral votes, but would definitely be a blue state.

general reply;

Pet peeve of mine is people stating that Mr. Obama is black. He is half black and half white. His mother is/was caucasian, do her genes not count?

Is omitting her side of his DNA racist? [purple]

On the topic: Good for Texas, maybe this gets some attention and the politicos in Washington will get their collective acts together and actually do some work for the good of the country and its people, instead of themselves and their corporate sponsors. [probably should be in purple, and hope no one thinks I'm really this naive, just a realistic optimist or optimistic realist]

Wow, I'm really not surprised that they could find 25,000 idiots in Texas this fast, but to waste the time of the President on something that WILL NEVER HAPPEN right now is just about as low as anyone could get.

I'd laugh my butt off if the just gave those dolts walking papers and stipped them of their citizenship. Kinda like let the individuals secede...

Way to stay up on your history..

There has been a secession movement in Texas since long before the black guy won... but I know that calling everybody who doesn't like Obama a racist hick makes for a good bumper sticker and probably rallies some votes. .... and if I could address this to PDR, it did NOT go away under Bush. It may not have been reported on but there were books published and the movement grew in 2003 and 2004...

The funny thing about these secession movements is that they are a lot like a 3rd party candidate... None of them really catch hold and look like they are going to amount to anything so most people don't migrate in that direction... The folks that run the secession movement(s) in Texas are pretty much nuts who form groups, splinter off to form new groups and generally can't get their crap together... if they had a reasonable coherent leader, they would probably garner a lot more support from more rational people.. just like a 3rd party candidate.

Question ? ... At what point ( number of sigs and number of States ) would stop calling folks looser and bigots and take a serious look at the situation ? .. The Major point here is the REAL divide within the Country , bigger that any time in my lifetime ..

Yeah, I'm sure that was the reason.

I travel all over the country, and by travel, I mean I stay in a certain place for 4 months to over a year at a time. There is a good bit of bigotry and prejudice. But, to pretend only one side perpetrates it is ridiculous. I'm still surprised at some of the people I come in contact with, and it is people from ALL backgrounds. The south is no more bigoted than the rest of the country. Those that are, are just more vocal about it.

For most people though, race has nothing to do with not liking this president. It's just a very convenient way that people who support him try to shut up his detractors. It's a lazy way to belittle those who don't believe in your guy. I find it funny that someone who calls a group of people demeaning names also calls them bigots.

While I largely agree with you Jules, the flip side of that argument is also true. That is, bigots, who don't want to be identified as such publicly, try to conceal their hatred behind the more benign veil of political disagreement. I've witnessed this first-hand. My father-in-law (and most of his family) are prime examples of this kind of veiled bigotry. In my travels around this country I've seen pockets of this kind of behavior everywhere.

So, while I would agree that the majority of folks who dislike Obama aren't bigots, I think that the percentage of Obama-haters who are bigots is much larger than his detractors would like to admit to. Given that he is the first black president this country has had and that the state of race-relations in this country remains somewhat shaky (despite the progress we've made over the years), this shouldn't come as much of a surprise to anybody. ::shrug::

really? i guess i'm just not far out enough (still in city limits), so I probably just don't see it as much. but, we're integrated rather well here in South Austin

i do think it's rather funny that Austin has been the "liberal" mecca of Texas from it's german-settled roots and it has never really changed. Austin was the one section of Texas that voted against secession before the Civil War, etc.

I was thinking along those same lines. The number of people at this time remains very small but I think it speaks to the growing sense of disenfranchisement alot of people have with this country . I am often reminded of something my grandfather used to say ( In my best hillbilly accent ) " Boy , it ain't gonna happen in my life or your pa's but there is fixin to be a major @#^$storm comin for this country and you better have a sturdy umbrella ." I'm sure alot of older folks have issued the same warning for generations but I get the sense that hard times are on the horizon.

I'm having a hard time believing that a state as big as PA can't find 25000 people willing to sign that petition. Same with Jersey, NY, NC, SC, TN and AZ. Those states are highly populated and with each having significant Republican strongholds.

So, either the campaigns in those states are not very strong, or people, regardless of their personal beliefs, find it ridiculous to secede from the Union. I suppose it could also be apathy as well.

Not sure which..

Most of these petitions were just started 3 or 4 days ago.

Of course they are not very strong, they are being led by people that make the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street look like a well-oiled machine.

I consider it ridiculous to want to secede under the leadership of THESE people... The funny thing is that all of these states are seceding to become independent countries... what would get interesting is if all 20 states joined together and tried to secede as one country... that might get more attention... but again, that would require intelligence, planning and cooperation... so its not going to happen.

There are completely obscure petitions started by random folks on the White House website. They aren't really actual campaigns. You could go there and start one for Ohio if you wanted to... and it'll get as much attention as you can drive to it.

I think I'm going to go start one to have the Federal Reserve provide a grant to enable Condi Rice to buy the Browns from Haslam.

Actually there has been a secession movement since 1865. Thanks for updating me on my american history.

And BTW whoever said Obama isn't black. Look up a definition in genealogy of what is considered black. back in the day it was anyone with atleast 1/8th. Nowadays it is pretty much considered if someone is mulatto they are considered black. And most people consider anyone with a lil bit in them black. The KKK believes that if you have anything your are considered black.

There's no huge divide. It is a bunch of crybaby sore losers that mad they didn't get their way. 25k out of how many ppl in Texas is a very minute percentage. But you must be young cuz the biggest divide in our recent history I would say was late 60's and early 70's. And then again in the 50's.

You must never travel to the south. Yes, I agree that there are ignorant bigots everywhere. I must disagree in your accusation that its no different in the south. It is way different. Way way way different. There are still signs around where I live that say "No Coons at Night". Do you find them up north? NO. You contradict yourselt by saying that its the same, but then you say it is way more vocal. So which is it? The same or more vocal? And it doesnt stop at being more vocal.

As far as the president being black. All these same states hated Clinton but didnt put threw secession forms. It's the fear mongering GOP that has got these "Idiots" and I do mean "Idiots" to this point. Do they really think they gona seceed from the Union? Or is it just another waste of tax payers and legislation time and money. And I think that your naive to think that race doesnt play a part in it. It may not for some, but I guarantee it does for a majority. When I speak with these type of people the first words out there mouth about the president are not articulate or policy concerning. It's that #$@*&% Obama.

But before he took the actual office, you had sizable amount of bigots making signs/sending emails..etc. Then look at the vitrol the First Lady and the kids have received! OMG.. I think i just swallowed my tongue from laughing!!.. Jules and others like her want to live in that bubble. Hey, I have no problem with people not liking Pres. Obama's policies. But before he took the actual office, you had sizable amount of bigots making signs/sending emails..etc. Then look at the vitrol the First Lady and the kids have received! Oh well, feel its nothing new, just life in America!

Interesting. I myself have never seen O's kids be the target of anything. They didn't choose to be the kids of the president, and honestly, I've not seen any "vitriol" pointed at them. Do you have examples?

Glenn Beck, he did apologize, went after Obama's daughter in one of his many boogeyman rants.

There was also the asian cuisine on pearl harbor day at their kids' school. Another non-story, too.

It's that #$@*&% Obama. Replace the word Obama with Bush, Carter or Clinton, then you will here what has been coming out of my mouth since 1988. Carter is the gift that keeps on giving.

When did the White House start allowing petitions on the website?

I didn't know New Jersey and New York hated Clinton. I learn something new everyday.

Italian's tell me since I'm Sicilian I am actually black. Is that true? I just thought it meant I was a criminal.
