Wow! Never knew it was that bad! lol! The president's kids have been kept out of the media, more than any president before him. I think that is the way it should be. Chelsea had a picture of a dog, "accidentally," shown in the place of her on Limbaugh's TV show. The Bush girls were hounded unmercifully for years. People in the media made fun of Palin's kids, including making crap up about their child with Downs Syndrome.
I really wish the media, as well as partisans, treated these kids like they do this president's kids. Hopefully if the next president has children they will be treated the same way as the Obama kids.

I doubt it's the media doing anything "right" and more about the Obama kid's being pretty young when they moved to the White House so their movements and public interactions were much more controlled. Chelsea Clinton didn't get much press until Clinton's second term as she was finishing High School. The Bush daughters were also older when GW entered the White House (Did they ever live in the White House with him?)

Pdwag and Florida Fan, You two might want to check your facts. Chelsea took some hits from limbaugh and promptly told to back off. She was in her teens when she was in the White House and was mostly left alone, especially after the Lewinsky scandal.
The Bush twins were young teens also and the press DID NOT HOUND THEM. Even when they were running around DC, drinking/partying(* saw it for my own eyes*), alot was not reported. Then when they went to UT, please, ask anyone from down there about what the Bush twins were doing and was not reported.
Most kids of Presidents should be left alone. The last two Presidents had kids in their teens and critics were told to leave them alone. Pres Obama's kids were young and no one should have been told to leave them alone.
(* When the Obama kids came to the white house for the first time, it was the Bush twins who took them on a tour and showed them things. Apparently, the kids knew how to act better than alot of adults. *)
the one area we can give our press some praise is that they do leave politicians families relatively alone (compared to our European neighbors especially).
however, Chelsea was hit pretty hard. i mean, she was even mocked in the Beavis and Butthead movie. she was a target for awhile (I do believe you are right that they backed off when the whole Lewinsky thing took off).
Anyone remember the Saturday Night Live Skit where Madonna was doing the Marilyn Monroe Happy Birthday Mr. President and in the end she points that she was singing to Chelsea?
