Cardinals sign free agent fullback Smith
Darren Urban, Tribune
The Arizona Cardinals found their blocking fullback Friday when free agent Terrelle Smith agreed to a two-year deal with the team.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Smith’s agent, Ryan Tollner, said Smith was excited to be part of an up-and-coming franchise and happy to be returning to the area where he played in college. Smith played at Arizona State from 1997-99.

In six NFL seasons with New Orleans and Cleveland, Smith has blocked for a 1,000-yard rusher five times – once during two seasons in Cleveland and in each of his four seasons in New Orleans.

In an "NFL Insiders" article dated of October 20, 2004, I found some very interesting observations about Terrelle Smith that give us an idea of what he could possibly bring to the Cardinals. Here they are:

The Browns new fullback is everything the team hoped he would be, and more...

The new-era Browns have never had a pure fullback until this year. The past three years under Butch Davis, they tried one-back sets and H-backs, but it wasn't the same.

Now they have a true fullback in Terrelle Smith, and they couldn't be happier.

In Cleveland's 34-17 victory over Cincinnati, William Green ran for 115 yards and Lee Suggs had 100 in receiving yards.

While Davis praised those two running backs, he gushed about Smith, signed as a free agent from New Orleans.

"The guy who deserves all the credit right now is Terrelle Smith," Davis said. "This guy is one terrific human being. He is a leader. He is tough. He brought a source of energy to the field today. He blew up linebackers, hit safeties. Those guys love playing behind him."

Suggs had a 59-yard touchdown catch. Davis said a blitz pickup by Smith made it possible.

Green ran for 66 yards on a 79-yard touchdown drive at the end of the second quarter. Smith was responsible for a lot of those yards.

One knocked Bengals linebacker Landon Johnson out of the game on a 9-yard Green carry.

"That was the hit of the day," tight end Aaron Shea said. "He smoked that linebacker. That's a true fullback right there."

Smith swooped over to the sideline with his arms extended like airplane wings as if he was ready to take off from nearby Burke Lakefront Airport.

Emotion is a big part of Smith's game. During the game, he approached teammates and implored them to touch him so they could feel his energy.

"To play this position, you have to be emotional," Smith said. "That's what it takes to play this position. With the pounding and the beating, it's like I'm in 40 car accidents a day."

Said Davis, "When we signed him," Davis said, "(Saints coach) Jim Haslett told me the first time I saw him, `You're going to love this kid, and all the intangibles he brings to your team.'"

Best of Luck to ya T-Wrecks.

Hope your new team does better than your old one did.
That makes me realize... he has never been on a "good" team. He played for N'awlins when they sucked, then came here and now he's with the Cards.

Man, I feel for ya Terrelle.

Maybe he's bad luck. Maybe we'll turn it around like NO did this year, without him

if that's the case, he's *really* bad luck because it took them until 3 years after he left to get good

Good luck Terrelle... it was fun while it lasted here, but now you have a whole new set of live blocking dummies to run over. I'll look for you on "Jacked-Up" next season.

Man I am gonna miss that, wondering who Terrelle is going to lay out this week. I wish we could have kept him, personally I never really cared much if FBs could make YAC.

If their young QB, Leinhart, keeps improving, they are going to win a lot more games and could make it to the playoffs. Depends on their run game being able to set up the passing game with all those great wide receivers they have going for them. JMHO

From the outside, Terrelle seemed like a team player. He's also a smashmouth-type guy and a quiet, hard-working dawg. Good luck to him, we got few complaints about T.S. for his time as a Brown.

I'll never forget what I believe was his first play as a Brown.

Block up the middle, on the right side... right into Ray Lewis... knocking him back on his ass and TS looked to be choking him, lol

I remember reading somewhere or hearing it....it was when he just signed with us.
TS said something about being excited to play Ray Lewis twice a year so he could knock him on his [censored].

I enjoyed having TS on our team. I don't care that he didn't have the best hands, or greatest running ability. He could maul people over. Can Vickers do that? I don't know.

Vickers seems more like an H-Back to me. Maybe that's what Chud ment by a two RB system in Cleveland next year?

Exactley my thoughts. He slowed LBs downs after giving out a few lumps.

Good luck...hopefully he's in a place that uses their FB strictly to Block which I think he just might be. Good for him hope he does well - he's a good guy and deserves good things.

T smith will not get many fan complaints at all.. it was really the demise of him when we drafted Vickers especially since we want to be open to anything with our players abilities... He's a good guy he deserves to be on a winning team. I'm sure he will go to AZ and lead another back to the 1,000 yard mark.

Hopefully this will help other players see the writting on the wall and they eill step up their game.

I wish him the best b/c he was a great player on the field and a good person off the field. Never hesitated to talk with fans, sign autographs, etc. He lived next door to one of my buddies and he was always willing to chat it up.

We'll miss ya T. Smith. It's too bad the Browns management could never really use your power properly. Apparently they are looking for FB's that can also act as QB's when needed...

I was never a fan of this guy. Way to one-dimensional.

The Opposing Defense: "Oh look, T. Smith is in the game---must be a run play, everyone play the run."
