I know most (including me) don't want to see Heckert go, but I think it's something we should probably consider. Here is an article/list of guys you are potential GM's. I like this list because it tells us guys we have probably never heard of, not the retread Bill Polian/Michael Lombardi types. For the most part guys who get their first GM job are pretty anonymous because they work behind the scenes, so it's good to see who some of these guys are. Quote:
At this time of the year, I rarely go a few days without being asked about potential general manager candidates. And if you’re following me on Twitter or have heard me in any recent radio interviews, you might have caught some of the names I’ve mentioned. But because I’m constantly having conversations with NFL executives over the course of the season, that list expands or gets reduced by the information I gather by the week.
With only five weeks left in the regular season, it’s a good time to take an extended look at the best candidates for potential general manger openings, which should start to open up in early January. Heck, one already opened up last month.
In order to get an idea of who the best candidates are, I asked two current NFL general managers, one former NFL general manager, three personnel executives, and three prominent NFL player agents who they thought should be on the list. And I asked each guy to remove friendships, the best they could, and give me their list of the top-five most qualified names.
Here’s the list broken down by the ones most likely to get jobs for 2013 and executives likely to get strong consideration in the future:
Tom Gamble/San Francisco 49ers/Director of Player Personnel: In my 14 years of covering the NFL, I don’t recall getting as many strong comments about a potential GM candidate from high-ranking personnel executives and NFL player agents as I’ve received about Gamble in doing research for this piece. In fact, one NFL GM said my list should start with Gamble for the very fact that he’s about as well-rounded of a candidate as you’ll find.
And when you examine Gamble’s background, you can understand why.
He got started in the NFL at a very young age -- literally right out of college -- with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1988. His father, Harry, was the president of the team at that time. And the younger Gamble was around football growing up. His father was a long-time coach (pro and college) and then moved on to become an NFL executive late in his career.
Like his father, Tom Gamble is a rarity in NFL scouting departments these days: He not only has extensive pro and college scouting experience, he has experience with contract negations and the salary cap, and even has coaching experience (defensive assistant/quality control coach with the New York Jets for two seasons: 1995-1996) on the NFL side. While Gamble was promoted to his current role nearly two years ago, other teams have also been interested in him in recent years (St. Louis Rams and Oakland Raiders on more than one occasion).
Now in his 25th NFL season, Gamble has worked for five teams over that time period and has touched just about every possible aspect on the personnel side. He has helped build 10 playoff teams (four with the Eagles, five with the Indianapolis Colts, and one with the 49ers—and very likely another one this season).
Before taking a job with the 49ers back in 2005, Gamble worked for seven seasons as a college scout under former Colts GM Bill Polian, who is widely recognized as one of the best personnel evaluators in NFL history.
“He’s got a complete grounding in the game. He grew up in the game,” Polian explained to me recently about Gamble. “This is exceedingly important when you consider there are a lot of issues that you have to deal with when becoming a general manager that will come up with a team. You’re at a big disadvantage if you don’t have this experience in dealing with everything. That’s why non-football people have a harder time succeeding. Because Tom has so much experience and grew up around the game with his dad, he’s going to be more prepared than most. That’s a huge advantage.”
And it’s that extensive experience which should help Gamble land a GM job for next season.
Eric DeCosta/Baltimore Ravens/Assistant General Manager: The veteran personnel evaluator received his latest promotion in May of this year. DeCosta turned down several interviews with other teams earlier this year because it’s a well-known fact that he’ll eventually take over the entire football operations once (GM and Executive VP) Ozzie Newsome retires. What makes DeCosta one of the strongest personnel executives is due to his extensive pro and college scouting background, which spans over 16 years. And he has worked alongside of Newsome for many seasons. It also doesn’t hurt that DeCosta has been part of one of the NFL’s most successful scouting departments in regard to the NFL Draft for many years.
Marc Ross/New York Giants/Director of College Scouting: Ross joined the Giants in his current role in 2007. He got started as a college scout back in 1997 with the Philadelphia Eagles and was promoted to team’s college scouting director in 2000, at the age of just 27. And after working as a college scout for the Buffalo Bills after leaving the Eagles, he moved up the ladder again with the Giants. As one former NFL executive who worked with him for many years told me, Ross is one of the most organized and forthright people he’s come across in his years in the league. Ross, over the past few years, has interviewed GM jobs with the Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, and Seattle Seahawks. And it’s widely believed that he’ll get an interview for the vacant Carolina Panthers GM opening since former Giants GM Ernie Accorsi is advising the team in their GM search as a consultant.
Steve Keim/Arizona Cardinals/Vice President of Player Personnel: Keim, who started with the Cardinals in 1999, was promoted to his current role earlier this year after the NFL Draft. He essentially oversees both of the pro and college scouting departments. And Keim, who mostly had scouting experience for several years on the college side, got more involved on the pro side five years ago. One high-level NFC executive with another team said that he expects Keim to get a GM job over the next few years based on his extensive experience in player evaluations. It’s worth noting that Keim interviewed for the Rams GM job earlier this year.
David Caldwell/Director of Player Personnel/Atlanta Falcons: Caldwell, who was promoted to his new role earlier this year where he will oversee the college and pro scouting departments, also interviewed for the Indianapolis Colts GM job earlier this year, which eventually went to Ryan Grigson. While most if not all of his scouting experience came from the college side prior to this season, Caldwell’s name has been brought up to me on several occasions over the past few year as one of the top GM candidates based on his outstanding eye for talent and solid organizational skills. In fact, one current NFL GM said he would put him in the top-5 of best candidates available.
George Paton/Assistant General Manager/Minnesota Vikings: Paton was promoted to his current role earlier this year after receiving strong interest from the St. Louis Rams for their vacant GM job, which eventually went to Les Snead. While most of his scouting experience is from the pro side, he’ll get additional experience on the college going forward based on his new role, which firmly cements him as the No.2 man in the team’s personnel department.
Jason Licht/Arizona Cardinals/Director of Player Personnel: Licht is a rarity these days: He has extensive scouting experience on the pro and college levels from working with five teams over a 12-year period. Plus, he has coaching experience on the NFL level (1996 for the Dolphins as an offensive assistant/quality control coach) albeit brief. Licht also interviewed for the Chicago Bears GM job earlier this year, which eventually went to Phil Emery. In fact, Licht was the runner-up for the job.
Others who have been mentioned as possible GMs for future seasons
Brian Gaine/Miami Dolphins/Assistant General Manager: Gaine, now in his 15th year in the NFL and fifth with the Dolphins, was promoted to his current role with the team back in June of this year. While his scouting background mainly has come from the pro side, the veteran personnel evaluator ramped up his evaluations of college players in recent years based on his recent promotions. His name has come up a bit in conversations over the last few years with various NFL executives as a future GM. And he interviewed for the Rams GM job earlier this year.
Tom Telesco/Indianapolis Colts/Vice President of Football Operations: He was promoted to his current role earlier this year and has spent 14 years with the Colts, which puts him second in command in the personnel department. And Telesco has extensive pro and college scouting experience going back nearly 17 years. One personnel source who worked with him in the past said he could definitely see Telesco becoming a GM in the future based in his solid scouting and organizational skills.
Doug Whaley/Buffalo Bills/Assistant General Manager+Director of Pro Personnel: Because of his dual role he received when he joined the Bills in 2010, Whaley is basically second in command on the personnel side for the Bills. And he has plenty of experience with pro and college scouting (with the Bills, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Seattle Seahawks), which is a major plus for any prospective general manager candidate. While it’s assumed that he’ll eventually replace GM Buddy Nix when Nix decides to retire, it still wouldn’t be surprising to see other teams show interest in Whaley going forward.
Tag Ribary/Seattle Seahawks/Director of Pro Personnel: Ribary was promoted to his current role two years after working with the Seahawks in various capacities on the pro scouting side. He also had pro scouting experience with the Washington Redskins and Carolina Panthers. While he doesn’t have extensive college scouting background that some other candidates have, Ribary’s long tenure spanning over two decades in the NFL makes him a well-known and qualified candidate.
Chris Ballard/Director of Pro Scouting/Chicago Bears: One other NFC team, according to a source, wanted to interview him for a personnel job earlier this year, but the Bears denied that team permission to talk to him, which shows how highly the Bears think of him. And Ballard, who had college coaching experience for many years before joining the Bears 12 years ago, got promoted to his current role back in June. Prior to his promotion, Ballard worked as a college scout, but he oversees the pro scouting side these days, so he now has exposure to all facets of NFL scouting.
Matt Russell/Denver Broncos/Director of Player Personnel: The veteran talent evaluator has 12 years of extensive scouting work with the Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots, and Broncos. And Russell has widely been given credit for discovering QB Matt Cassel back during his time with the Patriots. Russell’s scouting background was on the college side prior to this season, but his latest promotion from earlier this year should help him get a stronger handle on the pro side.
Scott Cohen/Assistant General Manager/New York Jets: The veteran personnel evaluator began his 21st season in the NFL earlier this year. Cohen has extensive pro and college scouting experience over his 20+ seasons in the league with the Jets, Philadelphia Eagles, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Washington Redskins. His experience from scouting pro and college levels as well as being exposed to contract negotiations over the years should help him garner attention from teams looking for a general manager going forward.
Alonzo Highsmith/Senior Personnel Executive/Green Bay Packers: The former NFL running back joined the Packers as a college scout in 1999. He was targeted at least twice by other teams in recent years for upper level management jobs (non-GM role), but the Packers blocked him from interviewing, which is obviously an indication how strongly they want to keep him. And the Packers, recognizing his solid player evaluation skills, promoted him to his current role earlier this year. Highsmith, who has been largely recognized for discovering CB Tramon Williams, won a scouting award in recent years.

I'm also hoping we keep Heckert. No one on that list sounds like a huge upgrade from him.

Yeah,, I agree,, only one from that list seems like a possible upgrade and that's Gamble. It's interesting that he has ties to the Eagles. Not sure if Banner was there when he was or not. Don't think so.
EDIT: Just checked, no it doesn't appear they worked together with the Eagles. Banner didn't get to the Eagles until 1994 when Lurie bought them

From reading the article and the players their teams have drafted, Gamble (media would have a field day w/ that last name), Ross, & Caldwell are intriguing to me.
But I am 100% for keeping Heckert.

I am also 100% for keeping Heckert.
He had an absolutely incredible draft this year, with maybe 4 plus level starters, (Richardson, Weeden, Schwartz, and JMJ) plus another guy who might force his way into the starting lineup in Winn ...... plus a high quality rotational guy like John Hughes.
Add in guys like Benjamin, Miller, and Wade who could also contribute down the road, and this becomes a draft most GMs dream of having.
Add in getting Gordon in the supplemental and it becomes almost a GM's wet dream come true.

I think he's serious. What he's looking for is a proven winner.. an absolute can't miss kinda guy. Same thing we all want I suppose.
I just don't know if there is such an animal available outside of Polian. And I'd think he'd want Banners job.
Ozzie isn't going anywhere. Scott Pioli isn't going anywhere and honestly, without Belichick, what has Pioli done? he hired RAC, the guy most of you thought was lousy as HC. You aren't going to get Colbert from Pittsburgh to come here. You aren't going to get Jerry Reese from the Giants either. Besides, it was mostly Ernie Arrcorsi that built the giants anyway. And I doubt he comes out of retirement so he's out also.
Ted Thompson isn't going to leave GB, Ron Wolf won't come out of retirement and would anyone want Mickey Loomis from the Saints?
So, as a proven GM, one that has built SB winning teams and is young enough to last for a while, who's left? Nobody.
That means, you stick with what you got, or you go out and get someone like one of the guys mentioned in the article. And none of them was the GM of a SB winning team.
The closest guy you got to that is Heckert... And apparently he thinks (as do many on here) that he's gone.
And I'm afraid I just don't understand that move if it happens.

What's not to understand? If Heckert is fired it is because Haslam/Banner want to distance themselves from Lerner/Holmgren. They can't fire Heckert because he has done a poor job.
Whether you agree or disagree with that move is the real decision. I can see both sides. If I bought my own team I would want my own guys in their running it. But, it would be hard to fire someone who has been pretty successful.
I hope Heckert stays.

Has anyone here posted that they WANT Heckert to go..?
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

Nope just alot of excuse making as to why he may go so they dont have to actually accept that Haslam is clueless (and he is he has never owned a team) and Banner would appear power hungry (as some of us fear) on the 1st big moves they will have to make.
We all make excuses for those on this team we like but Heckert really (I think) needs no excuses.
Strange when you think about it Heckert left Philly and Banner was in control of the signing of FA and current players. Reid knew what was happening after that point and finally had a power play with Banner leaving.
From the time Heckert left Philly they have declined. From the time Heckert got here we have improved.
If you need 3 years to be a winner you got here 2 years to early. Get it done Browns.

It was a veiled sarcastic reference to what a lot of people post in the coaching threads... i.e. their expectations are simply unreasonable....
My honest opinion on the issues is that I don't know how much of their teams success the folks on this list are responsible for. In looking at the list and the body of talent assembled, it would be hard to argue with a guy that came from San Fran in the last 4 or 5 years... they are solid at almost every position and exceptional at some... if Kaepernick is as good as some people seem to think he's going to be, San Fran is going to be great again for a long time.

Of that list... Marc Ross. I like the types of athletes they've been bringing in and how much of the talent they've developed is their own. Seem solid in not just the drafts, but free agency, too (namely thinking of Martellus Bennett and Chris Canty). I don't know jack about the guy, but from a talent evaluation standpoint- taking JPP where they did and finding Justin Tuck- I wouldn't be as irritable watching Heckert leave.

Heckertt is the only bright spot from the Holmgren regime that I can think of, I really like what he has done thus far although I hope in the coming years we are a bit more aggressive in free agency when we are a contender (hopefully).

Heckert only looks as good as he does because the regimes of Mangini and Savage were essential failures. He's had hit and misses in the draft. But he has failed to get the Browns out of the AFC North cellar. Tom Gamble help assemble a darn good roster out in San Fran. He's a real up and comer.

I do not think the roster that Gamble inherited in SF was nearly as devoid of talent as what Heckert was handed when he arrived in Cleveland.

Do you know how hard its going to be to pull this team out of the bottom of the AFC North? This isn't a division that you miraculously create a winner over night, especially with building through the draft. GMs are not going to hit on all rounds of the draft either. For what it's worth, Heckert has helped bring talent and depth at DL and drafted a legit CB and SS. Richardson, Gordon, and Benjamin still have to prove their worth, but, I'd say Heckert is definitely better than any on this list. Despite the record, we are competitive because of what Heckert has brought in not in spite of. My only complaint in this off season was allowing Mike Adams to go and not pursue Garcon or Vincent Jackson in FA. I thought it was obvious we'd be throwing real money at those guys to address our WR woes. Instead, we go supplimental draft in Gordon and continue with the youth movement which I think most believe to be a good pickup for a 2nd round pick.
I really don't understand the Heckert hate.

Disgusting!
Do you remember how they revamped the whole scouting department less than? what? 24 months ago?.
It ain't broke,
Don't fix it.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

How fast we forget Savage and how he was credited for all the great stuff yet when we have an actual guy who has an actual proven track record with another team and we can see whats he's done with this team people want more. I'm seriously thinking of writing a letter to the Browns and tell them if they ditch Heckert I wont watch attend or pay attention to this team again until the day they are IN the playoffs. Should only take about 5 more years.

The same Jauron who went into a prevent defense against the Cowboys halfway through the THIRD quarter with only a 13-point lead. That's my biggest knock on the guy is that was even ridiculed by the announcers in awe as it was happening.

I think Heckert has done a good job in drafting, but in free agency,eh..not so good. I think there were some really good available talent in free agency where you didn't did have to overspend. I recall when Holmgren got hired as president,he said basically spending $$$$ would not be a issue. Heckert has done a real great job of beefing up the interior of the d-line. Haden and Ward have really amped their games up. Both are playing at a high Pro Bowl level. But he hasn't hit on finding that elite pass rusher. when was the last time the Browns had a DE record double digit sack figures? Offensively the o-line has played consistant overall. Its a better pass blocking unit than run blocking unit. The only WR that has the tools of being a difference maker is Gordon. I like Trent Richardson. he's gonna be a great one in time. But I look at a couple RB's in the top 5 now..2 were undrafted and another was the 31st pick in the draft. My point being, you can find a franchise RB anywhere. But Heckert has traded up twice to try to address the RB spot. and the Browns still need a franchise QB. Weeden looks serviceable, but not a Top 10 QB by any means

Thing is...Banner is on record saying he will look EVERYWHERE and then make the BEST DECISION....so if the best (track record and performance) decision is Heckert, but he fires him because of personal agenda stuff, we're back to double tongue speech....which I suspected all the way with J&J. Say one thing, then outsmart and do the other thing....

Thing is...Banner is on record saying he will look EVERYWHERE and then make the BEST DECISION....so if the best (track record and performance) decision is Heckert, but he fires him because of personal agenda stuff, we're back to double tongue speech....
What "personal agenda" stuff?
The only conflict I can see between Banner and Heckert is one of interest. Heckert left Philly so he could have so-called complete-and-final say over the roster. If Haslam hired Banner to install a system where the head coach is likely to have the final say over the roster, and Heckert chooses not to agree with that, then Heckert is going to go, but that has absolutely nothing to do with "personal agenda."
From Cleveland Browns.com: Quote:
But where do the former Eagles -- Heckert, Shurmur and Childress -- stand with Banner? Although some in the Philadelphia media have speculated Banner and Heckert didn't part on good terms when Heckert took over here in January of 2010, a source said that wasn't the case. Heckert, the source said, had a good working relationship with Banner, but left to have final say over the 53-man roster. In Philadelphia, coach Andy Reid had that authority.
So maybe you need to expand on what you believe this "personal agenda" to be.

The same Jauron who went into a prevent defense against the Cowboys halfway through the THIRD quarter with only a 13-point lead.
Our secondary was getting destroyed all over the field.. Jauron had no choice but to try to slow the bleeding...
I was more ticked at the fact that we went into a prevent offense near the end of the first quarter with a 7 point lead and stayed in it until there was a minute left to go in the game.

Keep Heckert here! Bandwagon tour. Think the picks are better than shown under this coach for offensive output. He has helped us a lot, and it is just starting to come together more lately. Keep him for continuity. Never bought into the fallacy that anything new is automatically superior and an upgrade over night. What we have needs to improve. I agree. Save this for next year if it is necessary, but not firing just to be firing.

If anyone is iffy on Heckert, I think you should realize that us 'band-wagoners' are thinking about an offseason of his work WITHOUT Holmgren.
It's hard to predict the level of Banner & Haslam's input/interference. I'm guessing it'll be stronger w/ free agency than the draft.
But you gotta admit it's damn intriguing to think of how the past drafts would have gone down w/ just Heckert and no Big Show. Sure it sounds like Holmgren didn't step in w/ the exception of Colt, but I'm sceptical. If Heckert gets let go, I'd love to hear the absolute truth from him.

So maybe you need to expand on what you believe this "personal agenda" to be.
Are you really hanging your whole "point" on retaining Heckert or not on final say of the 53? What are we talking about? 1-3 "vets/ST now" vs 1-3 "developmental guys"? Really?
So, you would be ok to fire Heckert and take a lesser GM (or at least roll the dice on some Kokinis-newbie) over who has final say for the last 3 spots on opening day?
If Banner believes Heckert is the best man for the job (and he IS, you'll look silly debating it...the rest is rolling the dice, or as Banner puts it "I know football, I was the only one interviewing Reid") you don't think he would figure it out over the 53 men thing?
You might as well believe in Santa Clause....the 53 roster thing is a big fat strawman you're drawing...the fun part is, that this could even be the official "wording" when all is said and done (it already is btw, I have 0% hope for Heckert by now)....still remains an incredibly thin and implausible argument
My money is on ego and/or personal agenda...

Has anyone here posted that they WANT Heckert to go..?
Actually, no. nothing concrete. Just rumors that were floated back in August that Heckert was poking around for a new job. Which, if true, would indicate one of two things
1: He doesn't think they'll keep him
or
2. He doesn't want to stay
again, just rumors that were written about in the press and posted on here a few times
in fact, I don't think I've heard a word from heckert in quite a while..... No Pressers since I don't remember when..
The point is, looking at this list of potential candidates, I don't see anyone that stands head and shoulders above Heckert? which is why I wouldn't understand the change.
And to whoever said it, if all they want is to distance themselves from Lerner/Holmgren, then I'm sorry, that's poor thinking.
If what they want is a different kinda guy, someone they feel has different strengths than Heckert, or one that isn't asking for the power that heckert currently has, then, I get it. But still, I'd like it a lot better if they got a proven winner in here and I just don't see one that's any better than Heckert.
At least not on the surface that is visible today.

I think the fact that Heckert has been silent for awhile might speak volumes. I think if Banner wants to retain him, would it be in a lesser capacity? if thats the case I think Heckert wants to go somewhere where he doesn't doesn't have play 2nd fiddle or fetch coffee for someone. he won't be unemployed for long. He could end up in San Diego where A.J Smith and Turner are on borrowed time
