I mean he could be right, but if you look at Rieds overall success and all of the playoff appearances that Philly had under Ried, the evidence would point to Ried being a pretty good coach.

If Reid gets credit, Banner gets credit for being good at his job.

I'm referencing your earlier question about whether Reid won in spite of Banner, and what happened after Banner left.

The relationships are always symbiotic. Reid got all the power this past season, gave Jackson his big contract, and did what he wanted with Castillo. The moves failed. Only Reid can be judged on those moves.

My only point regarding Banner was that he had more power than any of us actually knew. I had figured he did but had absolutely zero proof to back up my belief. Now I have the proof I've been wanting.

Yes, there are questions about Banner, but you gotta admit that our earlier discussions about his power over personnel here were based on what we now know to be non-factual observations. We didn't know he had as much power as he really did. That should give you and other fans a little better feeling knowing that he's going to have a say in the people here...just like he did in Philly.

More proof that he had more power in Philly means Joe Banner has to get more credit for their years of success.

Do we know that it was said as a direct statement?

I probably means that the new Browns ownership and Banner believe in McCoy and that they would make sure that he was on the team.

Furthermore, it's very likely that Haslam and Banner have had direct face-to-face discussions (interviews?) with each and every one of the existing players that they intend to keep on the roster.

As for telling McCoy (or any player for that matter) that they will be in the next coach's plans, it probably tells you more about what their philosophy is. I take it to mean that they fully intend to hire a HC (be it Kelly or any other candidate) that will use a scheme that uses McCoy's talents. That's clear, from what I can tell, from what perception that Weeden is probably being shopped too. Weeden doesn't fit into Kelly's scheme or that of any of the offenses that are likely to be run by the Browns next HC no matter who that is.

They are going to bring in a HC that will be able to use a mobile QB, hence the pursuit of Chip Kelly. Weeden isn't mobile and his age is probably a detriment to fitting in with whatever offense that the new regime will bring in. Plus, they probably don't intend on spending more than 1 draft pick (and a late rounder at that) on a QB and maybe no pick at all on one. They might wait for one of the UDFA types like Case Keenum or Kellen Moore from last season and go that route. Of course, if they can get a mobile QB somewhere in the draft that they like, they could always go that route.

I don't think they necessarily consider it. Like I said, they're going to bring in the HC that will run an offense that they want and with the players that they're going to retain and draft.

Remember that it doesn't seem to be a big concern with Kelly about who the players are that he has on the roster. He's going to run an offense that makes the most use of the talent that he has. Weeden obviously doesn't fit the type of offense that Haslam and Banner want, so he's very likely going to be gone from the roster in one way or another.

Of the remaining QBs on the roster (McCoy and Lewis - and even Johnson), McCoy is likely the one best suited to the offense that they want to run. I wouldn't even be surprised if McCoy's name came up in the interview process.

You're right and Haslam and Banner also said that the next HC would ultimately make that decision. As of right now, those asst. coaches are under contract and have jobs. It will be seen whether the next HC keeps any of them around.

Of course, giving those asst. coaches permission to seek employment elsewhere is just good business sense. It gives them the ability to seek a better opportunity.

Funny how everything on this board gets questioned for validity to the extreme except this statement that McCoy was told ... We are all assuming that this did indeed happen.

That's true, but it doesn't seem to be beyond the realm of possibility. McCoy fits into the system that Kelly would likely bring to the Browns and he's already on the roster.

There is a lot of that going on only because Lombardi was in Cleveland during the '80s and as having a hand in firing Bernie Kosar. However, as I understand it, Belichick had more to do with that than Lombardi did.

I agree that it is not beyond the realm of possibility. I just think it is funny that this statement is what we choose to accept as fact beyond dispute.

That probably has to do with what I stated about McCoy fitting into any system that the HC (whether it was Kelly or anyone else) that would be brought in.

To me, even though the system that Kelly would likely bring would be simple in execution, Weeden doesn't have the smarts to execute it effectively.

That and it goes along with my own view that they Haslam & Banner have no intention of bringing in another QB with a top draft pick.

Wow ... based on what?

Weeden had much of the WCO down as a rookie who had never played in that type of offense.

I don't see any superior sense of intelligence in McCoy's play last year .... or this year, for that matter.

McCoy has better wheels and a lesser arm. That's about where I place him in comparison to Weeden. I see no evidence that he's any smarter than Weeden. Actually Weeden, in many ways, operated Shurmur's complex WCO better than McCoy did last year.

This article is very difficult to read. I have a hard time excepting much of it as fact. Here are a few things that may be factual.D.McNabb still thinks he can play in the NFL.Andy Reid is probably McNabbs only chance to ever get another shot in the NFL.So if he has any aspirations of ever playing pro ball again he has a motive to come out in support of Reid now.The writer just sounds like guy pissed off that the Eagles may not get their first choice HC.

So, which team that is running the WCO should we trade him to? Let's see if they agree with your assessment.

I think that McCoy has a better understanding of football than Brandon Weeden does and Weeden's production (equivalent to that which McCoy had - albeit slightly worse in real terms but call it a wash) with what most any rational person would say is a higher level of talent at key positions and that's all that you need to judge it by, but I saw the games. Every one of them. Weeden's accuracy was atrocious and the receivers actually held onto the ball with him as their QB than with McCoy.

So does most every QB in the NFL. Some of them have no better wheels than Weeden and lesser arms but are better QBs.

Weeden got 5 wins and if you hadn't noticed, Shurmur's been fired by the Browns new front office.

I'm not arguing for Weeden to be a WCO QB. I think that he is miscast in that type of offense. I think that he would be much better in a vertical offense ...... actually one similar to what the Patriots run.

I think you're reaching. Nobody can say if player A fits, or is "in the plans" of the new HC accept the new HC. It's not as complicated as your drawn out hypothical IMO

After all of his throws in the dirt last time out, unless I was trying to scare the gophers out of the field I wouldn't want him unless it was on a third string emergency basis at best.

I doubt Kelly would either.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Hey, lets back off McCoy for throwing all those passes into the dirt. He said he was doing it on purpose because the linemen were tired from so much pass blocking.

Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reports that the Browns have requested permission to interview Vikings Assistant General Manager. George Paton. Glazer also reports that the Panthers have asked for the same permission and have a meeting set with Paton next week. Paton has been with the Vikings for six years and worked with their general manager Rick Spielman in Miami as well.

You know what ....... I wonder if maybe we hire Lombardi as Director of Pro Player personnel, and someone else as GM?

There have been tons of reports that Lombardi is working on free agency for the Browns. That would fit into a Director of Pro Player Personnel type job. There has been no mention of him looking at the draft at all.

I see us with this supposedly long term relationship with Lombardi ..... yet we're asking permission to interview Tom Gamble. I doubt that the 49'ers would allow him to interview for a parallel job. Maybe he becomes the GM, and Lombardi is Pro Personnel.

Here's a blurb from Terry Pluto's latest column.

http://www.cleveland.com/pluto/blog/index.ssf/2013/01/indians_outfield_an_upgrade_st.html

6. Most of the NFL seems to assume Mike Lombardi will have some role with the Browns. If it's not as general manager, it could be player personnel director. I've heard the Browns could hire a general manager and Lombardi. They have asked for permission to interview Minnesota assistant GM George Paton and Kansas City Director of Player Personnel Ray Farmer for the general manager job.

7. Seattle Vice President of Football Administration John Idzik has been mentioned for the general manager's job. I have talked to some people close to the Seahawks who say the Browns have yet to ask permission to talk to Idzik. He is being courted by Jacksonville. The Seattle source said while Idzik is the primary salary-cap specialist and negotiator with the Seahawks, he also helps in the player personnel department. He spent 11 years in pro and college scouting with Tampa Bay. He also was an assistant coach at Duke -- and sounds like the type of guy who could be attractive to the Browns.

Now THAT would surprise the Hell out of me. I think I've even said they wouldn't hire a GM and a personnel guy because they have hired guys to do much of the GM's job already.
