Holy crap. Terrible story.

http://www.kctv5.com/story/20234680/police-chiefs-players-kills-girlfriend-then-kills-self

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
Police are investigating two deadly shootings Saturday morning that they said are related.

The shootings involve a Chiefs player and his girlfriend.

The first shooting was reported about 8 a.m. at a home near 54th Street and Chrysler Avenue. The second shooting was reported a short time later at a Chiefs practice facility located on the Arrowhead facility.

Officials said the Chiefs player shot and killed his girlfriend and then drove to the practice facility where he shot and killed himself.

It's unknown if people were at Arrowhead or any of its surrounding facilities at the time.

That's awful.

There are some former Browns on their team. I kinda hope that none of them would so such a thing ... but no matter who did this, he was obviously horribly troubled.

My sympathy to those affected.

No matter who it is, it's sad that he felt that this was his best possible "solution" to his problems.

I wonder what significance the practice facility held? Why would he go there?

Talk about a season that is going from bad to hellish.
Crennel now has to deal with this.

the Chiefs organization can't seem to avoid tragic events like this.
I remember back in 1983 Joe Delaney who was a damn good RB,drowned trying to save 3 kids in a pond. He didn't know how to swim.
Then Derrick Thomas dies in that auto accident.

Truly awful. Sounds like he did it in front of Crennel and several other coaches.

Chiefs player kills himself outside stadium; police investigating two shootings - NFL - CBSSports.com News, Rumors, Scores, Stats, Fantasy
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/21217...g-two-shootings

A Kansas City Chiefs player fatally shot himself Saturday morning, according to Kansas City, Mo., police. A team source told CBSSports.com that linebacker Jovan Belcher was involved in a shooting at the Chiefs' practice facility.

Kansas City police supervisor Andrea Khan could not identify the player but said the first shooting happened in a Kansas City, Mo., neighborhood and the second happened at Arrowhead Stadium, about five miles away, at about 8 a.m. Saturday.

The Chiefs are scheduled to host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. Panthers interim general manager said the league has told the team to travel to Kansas City as scheduled, according to the Charlotte Observer.

The Chiefs issued a statement that said, "We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning. We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation."

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

To lend a little credence to the rumor that he did this in front of people:

Link for story

A player on the Kansas City Chiefs shot and killed his girlfriend early Saturday before shooting and killing himself at the team facility, according to police.

The suicide took place at Arrowhead Stadium, where the Chiefs play, and the player shot himself in front of a “couple of coaches, ” according to police. The Kansas City Star said the player was 25 years old.

According to sources, the stadium was cordoned off as players started arriving and police told them one of their teammates had shot himself.

The Chiefs are scheduled to host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. According to the Charlotte Observer, the NFL has told the Carolina Panthers to fly to Kansas City as planned to play the game.

The Chiefs released a statement that read: “We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning. We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation.”

Chiefs LB Belcher kills himself outside stadium after fatally shooting girlfriend - NFL - CBSSports.com News, Rumors, Scores, Stats, Fantasy
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/story/21217...ting-girlfriend

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher fatally shot his girlfriend Saturday, then drove to Arrowhead Stadium and committed suicide in front of his coach and general manager.

Authorities did not release a possible motive for the murder-suicide, though police said that Belcher and his girlfriend, 22-year-old Kasandra M. Perkins, had been arguing recently. The two of them have a 3-month-old child.

Belcher thanked general manager Scott Pioli and coach Romeo Crennel before shooting himself in the parking lot of the team's practice facility, police spokesman Darin Snapp said. Police had locked it down by mid-morning and reporters were confined to the street just outside the gates.

The Chiefs were scheduled to play the Carolina Panthers on Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium. The team released a statement saying the game would be played as scheduled.

Belcher was a 25-year-old native of West Babylon, N.Y., on Long Island, who played college ball at Maine. He signed with the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent, made the team and stayed with it for four years, moving into the starting lineup. He had played in all 11 games this season.

"The entire Chiefs family is deeply saddened by today's events, and our collective hearts are heavy with sympathy, thoughts and prayers for the families and friends affected by this unthinkable tragedy," Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt said in a statement.

"We sincerely appreciate the expressions of sympathy and support we have received from so many in the Kansas City and NFL communities, and ask for continued prayers for the loved ones of those impacted," Hunt said. "We will continue to fully cooperate with the authorities and work to ensure that the appropriate counseling resources are available to all members of the organization."

The NFL released a statement that also expressed sympathy and said, "we have connected the Chiefs with our national team of professional counselors to support both the team and the families of those affected. We will continue to provide assistance in any way that we can."

Authorities reported receiving a call Saturday morning from a woman who said her daughter had been shot multiple times at a residence about five miles away from the Arrowhead complex. The call actually came from Belcher's mother, who referred to the victim as her daughter, leading to some initial confusion, police said.

"She treated Kasandra like a daughter," Snapp explained. Belcher's mother, who is from New York, had recently moved in with the couple, "probably to help out with the baby," Snapp said.

Police then received a phone call from the Chiefs' training facility.

"The description matched the suspect description from that other address. We kind of knew what we were dealing with," Snapp said. The player was "holding a gun to his head" as he stood in front of the front doors of the practice facility.

"And there were Pioli and Crennel and another coach or employee was standing outside and appeared to be talking to him. It appeared they were talking to the suspect," Snapp said. "The suspect began to walk in the opposite direction of the coaches and the officers and that's when they heard the gunshot. It appears he took his own life."

The coaches told police they never felt in any danger, Snapp said.

"They said the player was actually thanking them for everything they'd done for him," he said. "They were just talking to him and he was thanking them and everything. That's when he walked away and shot himself."

At Belcher's mother's home on Long Island, relatives declined to talk to reporters. A purple SUV in the home's driveway was flying a small Kansas City Chiefs flag.

Perkins' Facebook page shows the couple smiling and holding the baby.

Belcher is the latest among several players and NFL retirees to die from self-inflicted gunshot wounds in the past couple of years. The death of the beloved star Junior Seau, who shot himself in the chest at his California home last May, sent shockwaves around the league. Seau's family, like those of other suicide victims, has donated brain tissue from the linebacker's body for research to determine if head injuries he sustained playing football might be linked to his death.

Kansas City mayor Sly James said that he spoke to Pioli after the shooting, and while he refused to discuss the GM's emotional state, the mayor said Pioli was "extremely concerned that fans of this team are not disappointed and not left in the cold."

"I think they think there's an obligation to the people of this city, the fans of the team and the fans of the other team to play the game," James said.

The season has been a massive disappointment for the Chiefs, who were expected to contend for the AFC West title. They're just 1-10 and mired in an eight-game losing streak marked by injuries, poor play and fan upheaval, with calls for Pioli and Crennel to be fired.

The Twitter account for a fan group known as "Save Our Chiefs" recently surpassed 80,000 followers, about 17,000 more than the announced crowd at a recent game.

Maine's head football coach, Jack Cosgrove, said Belcher was a "tremendous student-athlete."

"His move to the NFL was in keeping with his dreams," says Cosgrove. "This is an indescribably horrible tragedy."

Just watched a report on Channel 3 WKYC. It's probably on their website.

But here are the basics

Jevon Belcher (sp) shot his girl friend at their home, drove to the Chiefs training facility, stood in front of RAC and Pioli and thanked them for everything, then shot himself

I just checked and WKYC doesn't have the Video up yet, but later they probably will.. www.wkyc.com

Really sad.. wonder what brought that on..

I really don't think that we can expect a rational excuse for such an irrational action.

He caught his girlfriend cheating -> Shot her in rage -> Realized he could not get away with it -> Went to his only place of solace -> Killed himself.

Accrued brain damage could also be a factor here (see Chris Henry + Junior Seau).

This is all speculation... Still very very sad.

New respect for Quinn.

Brady Quinn’s poignant comments on relationships
Posted by Mike Florio on December 3, 2012, 12:53 AM EST

A bizarre, surreal, and tragic NFL weekend carried with it a very unexpected silver lining.

From this point forward, I have new respect for Chiefs quarterback Brady Quinn.

I don’t care about Quinn’s performance or the fact that the Chiefs won. Quinn’s post-game remarks were eloquent and heartfelt and they captured perfectly one of the things we risk losing as a society that communicates primarily in snippets of misspelled words and emoticons.

“The one thing people can hopefully try to take away, I guess, is the relationships they have with people,” Quinn told reporters after the game. “I know when it happened, I was sitting and, in my head, thinking what I could have done differently. When you ask someone how they are doing, do you really mean it? When you answer someone back how you are doing, are you really telling the truth?

“We live in a society of social networks, with Twitter pages and Facebook, and that’s fine, but we have contact with our work associates, our family, our friends, and it seems like half the time we are more preoccupied with our phone and other things going on instead of the actual relationships that we have right in front of us. Hopefully, people can learn from this and try to actually help if someone is battling something deeper on the inside than what they are revealing on a day-to-day basis.”

These are words that we should all study, and heed. I’ll be printing them out, keeping a copy on my desk, and reminding my son of Quinn’s thoughts whenever I can.

It’s impossible to know whether greater sensitivity by those around Jovan Belcher could have prevented Saturday’s events. Chances are it wouldn’t have mattered. But the lesson is that we should all be more attentive to the people whose lives are intertwined with ours, through our families or our friends or our places of work. We enter and exit this world alone, but we are in between those moments part of a broad and complex fabric that both provides us with support and commands it from us.

Let’s remember that the next time — and every time — we’re more worried about interacting with someone who isn’t in the room than someone who is.

Amen to that.

The most B.S. of statements in average life is someone asking "How're you doing?".
The second most B.S. of statement is usually the answer to that.

People ask as a social courtesy, even of their friends, without REALLY wanting the REAL answer.
People put on false smiles and lie about the answer because nobody wants to be Debbie Downer, and they also realize that most people won't care, anyway.

You are right, most people don't. If I pass a guy in the hall at work and ask him how it's going, I'm not looking for a 30 minute talk on the problems he's having with his wife and kids.. It's a courtesy, might as well just say "Hey"

However, pretty much everybody has people in their lives that they can reach out to whether its a spouse, a parent, a friend, a teammate, a pastor, or even a paid psychologist... And if it was somebody I didn't know and they wanted to talk, I'd probably still talk to them as long as they needed to talk. Problem is people (especially men) are filled with pride, don't want to admit there is something in their lives that they can't handle, and want to fix all problems on their own...

Well, if you want me to break it down, everybody does. Some people would just have to go a little farther to find it. If you are within walking distance of a church, the pastor, priest, minister will talk with you and counsel you and can direct you to more long term help, I don't care what religion you are... but the overriding fact is that a lot of these people won't reach out for help. Call it pride or ego or embarrassment... but most know that help is there, they just won't reach out for it. They become very good at pretending it doesn't exist and hiding it when they need to.

Can I also say that I found the fact that Bob Costas used this tragedy as an excuse to get on his soap box and make his "this is why we need gun control" argument during halftime of the Cowboys game to be absolutely inappropriate.

Inappropriate is the understatement of the year.

On the note of going to a church, etc... I'll just say that I'd never even have considered that as an option. I guess if you have more of a religious background, you might see it that way, but it wouldn't have even occurred to me to speak to someone like that.

Yes, you can.

My bet is, Costas has an armed security/body guard with him at most times.......kinda like rosie o donnell.......when she said guns should be banned (other than her security team)

It is currently illegal to murder someone.

It is currently illegal to use a gun in the act of a crime. (extra 7 years in prison here in Ohio, plus what ever the penalty is for the crime committed)

There are enough gun laws. One more, or 20 more, isn't going to stop this kind of thing. Only way to stop it would be to ban all guns..........and that is an impossibility.

He should take a vacation in a Mexican border town, and let us know how "gun control" is working out down there.
