And...if you leave it blank or write SEE ID on the plate...what do you feel you are protecting?

I don't think it matters, if you lose it, it's likely anyone that uses it isn't going to use the card itself, just the Number.

This.

Sometimes I sign them, sometimes I don't.

I have had fraud happen to me twice in the last few months. Once on my debit/bank card, and once on one of my credit cards. Both times the charges were made out west. Luckily both my bank and credit card company made it really easy for me to file an affidavit and get credited my money back.

People who do that stuff are morons. They're stealing from the wrong person. If you're going to do that, do it to someone who actually has money, lol.

Yes, if someone wants to use a stolen card for purchases online, they need some basic info (billing address) and should be good to go. My question was more about YOUR unsigned cards than stolen cards.

I am presented with several unsigned cards (or SEE ID cards) per day and am getting tired of explaining the situation. I am not supposed to accept that card as payment and that really seems to tick people off. It says right on the card -- NOT VALID UNLESS SIGNED. What is so hard to understand?

The most interesting "reason" has been "my bank told me not to sign it". WHAT?!?!

Just out of curiosity what does the signature do?

I don't sign my cards ... mainly out of laziness. I don't quite get what the point is. If I sign because that makes the card valid ... it still doesn't mean that I'm the guy presenting the card at the time of payment.

If the signature on the card matches the signature on the slip, a merchant can consider it a good transaction. If the card says SEE ID or is blank, it isn't a valid card (per my merchant agreement with MC/VISA/DISCOVER) and I should not accept it as payment.

And, while I have done a lot of research on this subject, it's not really about the customer anymore. It's about me, the merchant. If I accept an unsigned/see id card, the customer has the right to dispute those charges...and guess who eats them?

This also brings up another pet peeve of mine....merchants asking for ID when presented with a signed card. It's against the rules they agreed to with the big 3. THAT is probably a riskier move for the card holder than leaving a card BLANK.

I would think the best way to prevent fraud is to make sure a picture ID matches the name on the card. Those cards they came out with a few years ago with the picture on them seemed like a great idea, but I don't see them around and have never personally been offered one.

As for the signature, my signature is never the same.

I have terrible penmanship. I'd probably get turned down because my signature on card and on the slip don't match.

Right....which is why we SHOULD sign our cards the minute we get them. If Joe Smith steals your unsigned card and signs your name in his writing it will match the signature slip every time. I wouldn't check anything more on that sale -- per my merchant rules.

If Joe Smith steals your SIGNED card and tries to use it is more likely to be caught. I check signatures on every sale. If he can't sign your name like you do, I will ask for ID. If his ID says Joe Smith instead of Mr. Rishuz, I make a call.

People often shorten their name when signing a slip, but you can still tell it's their signature. Also, I find the signed slip a funny thing...it's only used in case of dispute. Nobody but me ever sees them and I have to save them in a safe. When I sign my name (at my store) I put an X on the slip simply because it will never be seen again.

The person checking the card should then be checking the name on the card against the name on the license with the picture of ME on it.
If things don't match up, they should be rejecting the card (and hopefully calling the Po-Po).

I'm sorry, that is incorrect. As the merchant, if your card is signed and matches the slip, it's a good sale. If your card is not signed, you are supposed to sign it in front of me. Only then may I ask for ID.

And this is part of the problem I have in trying to inform people of the rules the merchant must follow...everyone is told something different. Forget the facts.

i always find this humorous. i don't sign my CC until i am asked to do it in a checkout line. i then sign the card and make the purchase.

as for the signature itself, those electronic card readers with the stylus pen have made signatures so impossible to keep consistent (as each screen seems to behave differently) that i doubt a signature can protect as it once may have in court.

Yes, agreed. Those electronic things are nuts! I'm sticking to a physical signature in this discussion.

well, most of the places I go do check for the signature and I find it funny to sign it directly in front of them. it's usually a day or two after getting a new card before I have to do it.

and, I find it humorous to do so, and I need the little things in life to make me laugh

This is weird to me. My card is not signed. I've never been asked for ID, I've never been asked to sign my card.

This goes for any card I've had since I was 18 years old (I'm 25 now).

I didn't realize this actually happened to people lol.

Joe Smith made a lot of money in the NBA, I hope he isn't to the point of needing to steal credit cards... signed or unsigned.

x2 I rarely have cash on hand. Has nothing to do with being lazy. I see no need for it really.

Lazy was a poor choice of words. Chalk it up as old man thinking I hardly ever use credit or debt cards. Drives me nuts to see people holding up the line while they buy a pack of gum and use a credit or debt card to pay for it Most of us old folks pay cash for just about everything.

Hold up the line nothing ....... I carry almost no cash on me anymore ...... and I'd much rather be in line behind someone swiping a card than to be behind someone digging for those last couple of pennies that they "know I have in here somewhere ........."

Credit/debit card transactions are almost instantaneous anymore. Most places don't even make you sign for under $25-$50 anymore.

The only thing I miss is the confused look on a cashier's face if she/he puts the wrong amount of money in as the amount tendered ..... then needs a computer to figure out how much change I get back.

I can count on one hand (that's up to 5, GM) the number of times in the last year that someone has actually looked at the back of my credit card when I use it. Most of the time I use it is at the grocery store, getting gas, etc.

LMAO come on down south bro. The only people digging for pennies are your dates all over 80 years old. In the last two days I have stood behind somebody paying for a pack of gum, one small bag of chips, and a six pack of beer, and guess what. One lady had to swipe her damn card 6 times before it registered. One guy had to swipe his worn out card five times to pay for his damn pack of gum, and the other lady had to swipe her card three times, and yes all three of them also had to sign a receipt.

Was this at a gas station?

They always seem to make me sign the receipt if I go in and get stuff.

Walmart however never seems to.

That's only if I forget to do Debit, which is what I usually do anyways.

I always hate when I get gas as credit, and it stays on my account as 1.00 for like 3-4 days. Cause I tend to forget.. Had a couple small overdrafts because of it...

I have swiped my credit or debit card once for probably 245 of my last 250 or so purchases. I almost never pay cash anymore, and I can't remember the time I had trouble swiping my card. (If I am uying something for a buck or less, then I will pay cash) I have just gotten used to not carrying around much cash with me, and I like it. I cannot lose, misplace, or have stolen money I don't have in my possession. If someone steals my wallet, I alert Discover and the bank debit card hotline and I limit any potential losses. No one can use my card as a debit card without getting really lucky and figuring out the PIN # before I can call the bank.

As far as cards go .......I do hate getting stuck behind people with the food stamp card ...... especially in certain stores where they have to have a CSM come over and run the transaction. That takes entirely too much time ..... but it has nothing to do with a credit or traditional debit card.

WIC checks are even worse. They take forever.

And as some one who has used them before. It's not any more fun being the person using them...

Those green things?

I got stuck behind a young couple with tons of stuff in their cart, and they seemed to have a voucher for each item. The cashier told me that I should go ahead and go to another line because this was going to take quite a while.

She was right. I moved to another line, and was the 3rd person in line. I finished checking out in that line before the cashier in my original line finished up with the people she was waiting on.

It's "no ones" fault really. It's just a bad system.

I've cashed them for a Gallon of Milk, a Dozen eggs, and Bread, (all on one check) and still took like 5-10 minutes..

I was at Goodwill a bit ago picking up a few T Shirts.

The old lady in front of me wrote a check for $3.75...
