I expected more along the lines of what we got from Little as a rookie. To this point, he's come a very long way in just the last month.
Of course the big issue wasn't his physical ability. It's been his inability to stay away from the Kind. If the Browns can keep his head in the right place he looks like the real deal.
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***
I didn't know what to expect... so I didn't attach any expectations on him.
That said, I've been tremendously impressed with him.
I was watching one of the STO shows last week, and the talking heads were all using the word "smooth." I couldn't agree more. The kid has everything.... and my evidence is how easy he makes everything look. One-handed catches, reach-backs, changing his pace to adjust to balls.... it's all natural and fluid.
He reminds me of a young Randy Moss.... and he's only 21. (Let that marinate in your brain for a moment or two-)
It was a big 'risk' that Heckert took.... but no one can deny the kid's physical gifts. Talent scout's wet dream.... easy work with this one. (I put the word risk in quotes, because Heckert did his homework... everyone he talked to, said the kid was a slam-dunk, except for the 'substance consumption'...)
Staying away from The Chronic seems like a small price to pay in exchange for megamunny, NFL stardom, fans wearing your jersey, and a shot at the HOF.
The World is this kid's to lose. I hope he decides to own it. Can you imagine seeing someone log a 10-year career as a Browns #1 WR? The mind reels at such a possibility.
Quote: Heckert made a good decision drafting Gordon. Glad he's a Brown. I think we got our #1 WR.. Hadn't had one since Leon.
Hate to pick nits with you, HotB... but Brayleon can only wish he was this capable. Gordon is actually catching the "routine throws"... something that BE could never be relied upon to do... at ANY point in his career.
Just throwing that out there....
p.s. Boy.... the "rust" sure dropped off this kid in a quickfasthurry, didn't it? NINE games of NFL experience... and kid is comin' on, yo-
The thing that really strikes me about Gordon is how naturally he does everything.
Running by a CB looks routine for him. He just strides by them like they aren't even in his league.
Same thing catching the ball. His hands just envelop the ball. There is very natural skill in this kid.
I look at that TD catch in this last game, and I almost thought that he didn't catch it. He just snatched the ball right out of the air, and it just seemed to disappear into his hands. (actually one hand as he crossed the goal line) He seems to have learned a great deal about bodying up the defense on the shorter routes, and presents a great target for the QB. I can't wait to see how good he'll be with more than a few games experience.

regardless of his drops.. he was still a #1 WR.
Totally agree. Edwards was borderline unbelievable in 2007, especially against the Bengals.

By default.
According to your definition, so was Mo Mass before Little and Gordon arrived.....
You have NEVER seen me say that MoMass is a number 1!! At most I said he would be more effective with a QB who isn't afraid to air the ball out.. ie his days with Derek Anderson..
Then why is it you claim Leon was a #1 but MoMass wasn't?
What great talent did Leon posess? What great numbers did he put up that you feel qualified him at #1 WR status?
I just don't get it. He hasn't been a #1 WR legitimatly anywhere he has went since he left here, isn't a #1 WR now and I don't see anything he really did here that merrits such a title.
Was he the best we had at the time? Yes. Was he a legit. #1 NFL WR? No.
#1 WR by default.
I mean.......... Do you really wanna go there?

Edwards was definitely a #1 receiver for the one great year DA had. 1300 (almost) yards, 16 TD, and over 16 yards/catch is definitely a #1, for that one year anyway.
He was over 17 yards/catch and 900 yards in his final year in NY.
I truly think that nothing on the field has caused Edwards' demise. I think that he has done some things off the field that causes teams to flat out dump his ass.

If you look at his stats from all of his other seasons in the NFL without using the acception to the rule such as you have done, you'll see the true reason Leon isn't around.
You have shown one good season and one slightly above average. Less than 1000 yards recieving does not make you a legit. #1 in my book.
Why don't you look at all of his other seasons in the NFL and you'll see the real picture. But I think you already know that.

When he went to the Jets, he didn't have to be the #1, because Holmes was their #1 receiver. They also had a crappy QB in Sanchez.

I think this is a communication problem, with this latest "thread turn." It's all in how the term "#1 WR" is being used.
While there is no doubt that Braylon Edwards was the #1 receiver on the Browns' roster, what I read from PiT is that Braylon never consistently exhibited the skill set of a true elite #1 WR. If that's his inference, then I agree.
One or two flashy seasons may be enough to raise some eyebrows, but certainly not enough to place him in the same status as a Larry Fitzgerald or Calvin Johnson. Such a designation should be reserved for players who consistently, year-in, year-out, perform at a very high level. With that as a definition, BE was only close to that caliber during the 2007 season.
Now, if he meant it some way other than that, I'd like to read more... but that was how I interpreted his assessment.

p.s. In fairness, I should also say that coming out of college, BE had all the physical gifts of the two players I mentioned. What separated them from him was what goes on "behind the eyes and between the ears." True excellence is as much mental as it is physical, one you get to this level... and that's what placed Braylon's ceiling below 'Tron & Fitz.
Had anyone considered the context of what I initialy responded to, it would make things more clear.
HBYT basicly said that Leon was a #1 WR while he was here. Yet he claimed MoMass has never been a #1 WR.
Yet looking at our roster, there were times when MoMass has actually been "The Browns #1 WR" on the depth chart.
So since it seems that HBYT equates stats to being a #1 WR, I don't see anyone with less than 1000 recieving yads as being a legit. #1 accordng to that definition.
Was Leon our #1 WR on th depth chart? Yes he most certainly was. But looking at his achievements here, I only feel he lived up to the expectations of a #1 NFL WR for one season he was here.
I hope that helps to clear it up.
