State police are responding to a report of a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dickinson Drive, school officials said.

Police are reporting a number of injured parties. The nature of their injuries is not clear.

There are unconfirmed reports of two shooters — one dead, one still at large.

Shortly after 9:40 a.m., police reported that a shooter was in the main office of the school.

Groups of students — some crying, some holding hands — were being escorted away from the school by their teachers.

A staging area has been set up for students and their parents near the school.

I said it before and I'll say it again ...... I have no idea what goes through someone's head when they decide that such an action is somehow rational and sane.

My prayers go out to those impacted by this heinous act.

DEVELOPING: A gunman opened fire Friday inside a Connecticut elementary school, and multiple people -- including a child and the shooter -- are dead, FoxNews.com confirms.

A law enforcement official said the shooter is believed to be a father of one of the students at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown.

Authorities said the gunman, who was not identified, is dead. An official with knowledge of the situation told the Associated Press that the man apparently had two guns.

Earlier reports of a second gunman are unconfirmed. The Connecticut Post reports that police are also questioning a handcuffed man in connection with the shooting. Witnesses told the newspaper he was led out of the woods by officers.

Shortly after 9:40 a.m., authorities reported that a shooter was in the main office of the school. A person in one room had "numerous gunshot wounds," police told the Hartford Courant.

A dispatcher at the Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps said a teacher was shot in the foot and taken to Danbury Hospital. Local news outlets also reported that the principal was among those shot.

Parent Lisa Procaccini told Fox News that her daughter was sitting in a classroom when she and others heard gun shots.

"She was in a small class -- a reading group and they started hearing bangs," Procaccini said. "Her teacher, and I’m grateful for this, rushed kids into the bathroom and locked the door. They told kids it was hammering and tried to keep them calm.”

"Children were crying," Procaccini said. "She did tell me about a little boy that was in a police officer’s arms, bleeding. I don’t know if she gets it."

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said two firearms were recovered from the scene.

President Obama was notified of the shooting around 10:30 am ET, White House officials said.

The Newtown School District has locked down schools as a preventive measure to ensure the safety of students and staff.

A statement on the district's website stated that afternoon kindergarten classes have been canceled.

The elementary school has close to 700 students.

Newtown is in Fairfield County, about 45 miles southwest of Hartford and 60 miles northeast of New York City.

Geez, this is just terrible. what in the hell do these killers think.

NBC News has live coverage on now and they are saying 26 Dead. 18 Children and 8 adults but they are also saying they can't confirm that as 100% accurate.

They are saying they aren't sure if there is one or two shooters and that there was hundreds of shots fired. But at this point, they think just one so far.

Two 9 mm pistols found, one Sig and one glock (sp) I'm not a gun guy, but if hundreds of shots were fired, doesn't that mean that those two guns had to be reloaded a number of times right? whoever this guy or guys are, they came prepared.

Damn it.. this is just horrible. My prayers go out to those killed and to their family members.

SMH....it's so sad. I don't have words to explain my feelings. Having a child in Kindergarten this would be my greatest nightmare come true. I will pray pray for the families of the wounded and slain. I would be so broken that I don't think I could ever recover, I hope one day they can. So so sad.

If you want to off yourself fine, do it, but don't take innocent people with you.

I don't think words can explain just how tragic this is. I mean, wow. Just unreal.

What the hell is wrong with people? Death is too good of an option for people that do this...

There's a special place in Hell for people like that. I cannot even express the emotions I'm feeling right now

I just can't even wrap my head around this....

I really hoped I'd never have to say this, but I have to ask my son's elementary school what their plan is for these situations. I mean, elementary school!

What can be done to stop these kinds of things from happening? My Lord.

Wow, has this been confirmed? So unbelievable.

Well, if he truly is a father of one of the children they would let him in even with a security system in place. If somebody is bent on doing something this horrific, we have to come to terms with the fact that it is very hard to prevent.

They found a body of what they are reporting as his mother at a residence. Looks like he may have murdered her and then headed for the school.

My heart is broken for these people.

The shooters mother or the shooters kids mother?

I can only hope there's a special place in hell for anyone that would do this to kids.

I just had an alert pop up on my phone saying they have ID'd the shooter and his parents were found dead in their NJ home.

He's 24. His name is out there, and people all over Facebook are sharing his profile.

Wish it would have never been released.

Yes, they have confirmed who he is and that he is 24. No confirmation on his relationship to the school, but they are saying he is no stranger to the school.

A 'blue little bird' told me that his mother was a teacher at the school.

I saw that too.

So incredibly sad... just praying for the victims and families affected by this senseless tragedy...

Journalistic integrity failed today. A bunch of networks pulled a facebook photo from the wrong person today. The wrong Ryan Lanza was shown and there's a bunch of fallout from that.

Journalistic integrity went out the window when they shoved a microphone in 3rd graders faces to try to get a soundbite.

I've had to turn it off. Every station and their coverage disgusts me.

All the media is doing is amping up the next suicidal a-hole looking to put his name in lights on his way out.

Nothing I'm reading now indicates that there was more than one shooter. They are questioning someone but not calling them a suspect.

They have now found his brother dead.

The news media should be ashamed . Nobody wants to see the anguished looks on the victims of this horrible crime .

If that is true I hope that whatever media outlet that is involved in a lawsuit that will bankrupt them . I seriously would like to see that.

Wow... just... Wow.

I think it's natural that people want to know what happened and hear the story and feel for the people involved. They don't necessarily want all the crap that the networks spew, but they don't have a choice because they ALL do it.
