I feel compelled to start a thread on Cribbs and defend him a bit.
We aren't allowed to post Twitter on this board, but if anyone wasn't aware, Cribbs had a bit of a Twitter meltdown last night and it was in response to some pretty harsh criticism from fans. It actually has made me embarrassed to be a Browns fan.
Here's my take on Cribbs. Let's start with his play... Everyone gets old. No one outlasts Father Time. Has Cribbs slowed down since coming into the league? Yes, he has. But he's still an incredibly effective return man, both punts and kicks, and he gives his heart and soul every time he's on the field. I am in complete disagreement with a common criticism he's received lately ... and that is, he is somehow dumb, fat, and happy since he got his new contract. Why? Because he doesn't have any return TDs? He still plays his arse off every time he's on the field.
Off the field, he has embraced the city of Cleveland like very few athletes have. Been a real advocate of the city and team. He's often given the team a face. I bet you most people could only name one or two Cleveland Browns and Cribbs is one of those guys.
So here's what I don't understand. Why do people turn on someone who has been such a great player for this team and a great ambassador for the city so quickly? Why does it always have to be 'what have you done for me lately?'. What about all the blood, sweat, and tears he's poured in over the years? Doesn't that count for something? What about just treating a guy who has treated us for many years with a little appreciation and respect for all that he's done? It's like people forget so easily all the great plays Cribbs has made for the team.
Who's next? JT? Guess what? He's going to get old too. Then people can start griping about him. And blast him on message boards. And completely forget all the great things he's done for this team. It's coming. That's the way fans are.
To me, it's embarrassing. I was embarrassed to be a Browns fan reading some of that stuff yesterday.

Josh Cribbs didn't change the kickoff rule that basically eliminated K/O returns from the game. Speculating is easy, but I feel confident he would have a couple more TD returns if that hadn't happened. He might not be quite as fast as he used to, but he is still our best option for returns, and he is a superior special teams player. Public media turns regular people into anonymous jerks ... keyboard warriors. That said, I hope the next coach bans Twitter from the locker room, and fines any Tweets that reflect badly on the player or the team. Guys have to be smarter than to respond to idiots wanting to be noticed.

My point had nothing to do with Twitter ... it was just the trigger for my thoughts.
Where is the appreciation for a guy that has done so much for this team?

Twitter was the platform for some crackhead fans to voice - anonomously - their displeasure with Cribbs. It no more reflects the mainstream fans' opinion than some of the posters here do. I don't think very many fans have turned on Cribbs, just some of the drunks on social media.

Maybe it is a minority getting a strong voice, but it sometimes seems like it's a much stronger majority among fans.
And it's not like we haven't seen fans turn on players before. Track records don't seem to count for anything in this day and age.

Cribbs' value to the team is being gradually reduced. We have Benjamin to do returns, Bademosi as a gunner, and he is no longer in our top three of WR, probably out of the top 5 and not even a rotational talent.
Each of the players above is also a potential starter or back-up at a skill position. Cribbs is not a potential starter. He is an excellent returner and gunner, but IMO guys like Bademosi and Benjamin are more valuable as developing potential starters.
Loved what he brought to the game, the team, and the town.
He would have to take a pay-cut on his next contract and still I would hope that somebody at the bottom of the roster is more valuable.

All fine and good. Makes a lot of sense and will probably come to pass that way. That's not what I'm arguing here.
It's the general lack of respect and appreciation for a player that has given his all to the team and city for a long time just because he isn't as good as he used to be.
I'm not saying that's what you did ... it isn't ... you were giving an honest evaluation of where things probably stand with Cribbs.
It's the vitriol toward him from many others that I just don't get.

I'm not on Twitter so I didn't see what was actually said to rile him up, but honestly, he needs to not respond to those people. he cannot win that battle at all

Twitter is the last place Cribbs should be after a blowout loss late in the season.
I understand his frustration, but telling fans to f-off after they pushed ownership to resign him several years ago is inexcusable. Hopefully there will be a mutual parting of ways after the season and Cribbs can move on.

As I understand it, Cribbs was upset because someone said some unkind things about him fumbling in yesterday's game.
Not to defend rude people, but Cribbs has to understand that people are going to be upset after a blowout loss in which he lost another fumble.
He has touched the ball only 90 times this year between kickoff and punt returns, and receptions and rushing attempts, and has fumbled 6 times, losing 3 of them. I think that the opposition has scored on all of his lost fumbles.
6 fumbles with 3 lost in only 90 touches is really pretty high. Again, it doesn't ecuse rude people, but Cribbs can't act like he's been perfect.

Again, I'm not really doing a good job conveying this ... but the Twitter episode was just a springboard for me to talk about something I've noticed all season long ... a general lack of appreciation for a guy who has given his heart and soul to this team. Throw the Twitter thing out of it.
He's washed up ... he got his contract and hasn't done anything since ... can't wait to move on from him ... benjamin is better ... blah, blah, blah ... I just wonder at what point fans cross over like this for a guy who was very good for us for a long time.
I work with a guy who is a Patriots fan. You should hear him blast Brady on a weekly basis. I'm thinking to myself ... this guy has delivered you 3 SBs and two more appearances ... he has brought the fans of NE so much joy ... enough for Browns fans that it would last a lifetime. And you're here complaining about him?
It's like what the hell is wrong with people. Where's the perspective?

I certainly appreciate all that Cribbs has done for this team. No one can question that he has worked his ass off trying to do everything he can to help this team win games. He's been, for the most part, a good representative for the team in the community, and to a nationwide audience.
That being said, he has made mistakes, and any player has to expect to get called out when they screw up ... especially in today's internet world. It comes off as being thin skinned when he responds as he did after a game in which he fumbled and all but gave a TD to the opposition. If it were me, I would expect to get blasted by someone after a foul up like that.

I get what your saying. I don't think Josh has ever been "fast" as much as quick. Yeah he's slowed down a bit...maybe. He's still a good player on guts as much as anything. It's to bad that it's come to this. Very few players ever stay with the same Team so it's more likely for the Fans to be upset and complain. I don't think JC has been happy since Shrums been here. They took him out of the O and reduced his roll also. As sad as it seems, the NFL is a game that is What Have You Done For Me Lately? Your a bright guy, you should know that. No it doesn't make it right, but thats the way it is. It used to be just in some areas this was the case, now it seems like Corporate America is becoming the same way. They don't care what you have done before it's what can you do now

To me JC needs to be on this team, if not returning punt & kicks than covering punts & kicks, but with that he'll have to play for less, Love him but yes father time is fast approching him for what he does, JC is and always will be a Brown, appriciate him and what he does.
As for fans giving him grief, We all know there are many idiots out thier, some even root for our Browns cant stop them from mouthing off or make them switch to the Steelers, sometimes when we hear the BS they spew we need to walk away and let them wallow in thier own BS, you cant tell them other wise many are know it alls so why try, to me it any worth it, josh just needs to let that BS roll off his shoulders, the world is full of idiots Josh just needs to keep playing hard, thats never been in question...

Your right, JC seems to think everybody understands all the stuff he goes thru and all the hard work it takes. The Avg. fan does not. He knows how much effort he gives and feels like he should be recognized for it. Fans really don't care about that stuff, they just want results.

It's because Cribbs hasn't always been viewed as putting the team first. He went on the attack by making the talk-show circuit to try and get a new contract a couple of years ago. He's thrown the head coach under the bus because he didn't get touches.
Now those are just two instances, and there are more, but for all his contributions to the team and the city, he hasn't always been a team-first guy.
Keep in mind that Braylon Edwards has been as charitable as anyone towards the Cleveland area, but that doesn't change the fact he's a ..
When the most defining trait about you is "mercurial" and your behavior hasn't always reflected putting the team first, well, the fans don't forget, and some don't forgive.
In today's world of media, what you say and do away from the field carries as much weight as what you do on it. He's often come off as selfish and whiny, and when you don't play well there are always going to be the fans who remind him of that.
Nobody is critical of what he's done on the field over his career. Those who are critical of his actions and the things he's said haven't done it without cause.

I would like to apologize to Toad and WSU Willie.
Being the OP of this thread, I should have been aware of several things regarding Josh Cribbs ... several things that should have prevented me from making this thread...I should have been aware of all those points. I didn't use my head at all. I also apologize to any of the board that I offended defending a Browns player.
Cribbs, in reality, was a real piece of work. I tried to pull the wool over everyone's eyes on here...I tried to skirt the facts ... and make people believe he was a good guy, a good teammate, and a great player.
I think we can all breathe easy knowing he won't be here next year. I know I will. Good riddance man. Don't let the door hit you where the good Lord split you! Can't wait until he takes himself, his self serving ways, and his mediocre play straight out of town.

I can feel Cribbs frustration. I feel it every single time I am watching the game at a bar when some drunken idiot "fans" start griping about everything. They start saying stuff like:
"Don't worry, we'll blow it"
"This is the part where we screw up"
"We'll lose, we always lose"
"These guys suck, they don't even know how to play"
"Bench this guy or that guy"
A lot of people in this town get so negative about everything whenever there is the slightest amount of adversity. Even without adversity, they start making up excuses about why we are eventually going to lose the game.
It is sickening. I am a fan, but I don't get all bent out of shape after a poor performance. I realized quite awhile ago that a football team seldom wins every game, and players wil make mistakes on teh field, just as coaches make mistakes on the sidelines. But I am not the type to lambaste these guys every week after a loss.
I am pretty sure that losing on teh gridiron is a pretty disappointing thing, especially when you consider all the time these guys spend getting ready each week and staying in shape damn near 365 days a year. They don't need idiot fans telling them how horrible they played---they already know it, and feel the sting after every loss.
I remember losing in HS, and it is not fun. I remember losing a league title game and it hurt a lot for weeks afterwards.
So good for Cribbs for sticking up for himself and all he has worked for. Some people in this town are just complete idiots. There is no reason for the kind of venom that some people choose to unleash on our players.
I seldom watch games with my father for this very reason. If we are losing he is calling every one on teh team an idiot that doesn't know how to do their jobs, and even goes so far as to refer to a lot of African American players by racial epithets. I cannot listen to that.
Those same players work very hard every week, and they, and the coaches too--know a whole hell of a lot more about the game than drunken raging fans.
I know a little bit about teh game, as I had played in HS--but I am not going to claim that I know more than anyone who works in The League. And it is completely asinine for anyone to act as though they could produce a better gameday plan than the guys we have in place. They do this professionally--they get payed millions--99.9999% of posters have literally NO SHOT at ever landing a gig as a HC, OC, or DC....
And yet so many feel like they have the authority to label this coach or that coach an idiot, or dunce.
Get a clue people.....and realize that this team is young, is improving, and hopefully we can go into next year with greater experience across the board, some added pieces to the puzzle, and really surprise some people.
I am a fan of continuity in this Conference. I believe for a team as young as ours--that kind of thing is important.
And I am sick of fans and media running every player, regime, outta town because they cannot handle waiting for the current regime to produce a winner. I cannot see a team building a winner with the kind of turnover that Cleveland fans clamor for--it is beyond stupid.

You are right in your initial feelings towards Cribbs. He has given a lot to this team and city.
To have him even mentioned in the same post as Braylon Edwards is beyond stupid.
I hope that if he leaves that his next team appreciates him more than the dopes on this board seem to.

Look...no one is saying that they do not appreciate - or acknowledge - what Cribbs has done for the Browns or the community...even the posters on here who are ready for him to move on. But you continually posted as if you had no idea - darn near astonishment even - why some people are tired of his mouth/act. THAT is the part that is hard to believe. Cribbs has stuck his foot in his mouth an awfu lot for such a "team player". Now he's gone and done it again...no wonder fans are po'ed at him. Some want him gone after his latest foot-in-mouth move...and some are actually making him out to be some kind of victim with his Twitter stupidity. Quote:

Whatever.
I'd resign him for the vet minimum...but not any more than that. And I would tell him that I will cut him within minutes after the next Twitter outburst or his going to the media about his playing time or contract.

You know, he's done here. He isn't that much a receiver. Rule changes have reduced his effectiveness on special teams. We as fans have every right to say "Josh, we're disappointed in you. We pushed for you to get paid big and all you do anymore is fair catch or fumble." The man makes millions to play a game, he should be able to take criticism. We as fans should remember Cribbs is a person too, and while we can criticize, making statements in poor taste like "Dude you suck, you're an overpaid underachiever and I hope your family dies so you know what it feels like your performance is doing to this team, the only true love in my life" should never be made.

Look, I like Cribbs just as much as the next guy, but come on, this twitter crap is BS. These guys love the attention they get from Twitter, but IMO it ruins many of them with the fans.
I don't know what was said, but if you bad mouth fans after you mess up in a game, that is on you. If you can't take the ridicule then stay off the social media.
I've read alot of tweets from players, and to me, it is just another way to garner attention. It is all just part of the "me" society we live in. From the silly dances after any type of play, to this twitter crap. All it is, is ego stroking. Look at the difference it made when Little gave it up.
As for Cribbs the player, time is catching up with him. He is still effective, but the fumbles this year are unacceptable. People like to refer to the "what have you done lately" crowd, as if it is something new. These guys make big money to do this, and when their performance starts to weaken, it is natural nad proper for them to be replaced.
Too many take a personal liking to certain players. That's fine, until that player can't play the way they did before, or as in Cribbs case. IMO, feel that the team is losing because he doesn't get as many plays as he wants.
Face it, the wildcat has come and gone, and without it Cribbs returns to what he does best, special teams. His whining about being used does nothing to help the team. IMO, he is looking for sympathy from the fan base and is used to getting it. He has been the only bright spot for years, now the team is getting more talent, and he is no longer looked at in the same way. That is the natural cycle of things.
What have you done for me lately is exactly what is called for in a professional league. Big money makes it that way. Eventually even the greatest are replaced, it is natural.
Cribbs built a nice relationship with the fans over the years, but if he is bad mouthing fans on twiyter, then only he is to blame. He wants this attention, and evidently he can't handle it now that he is not everybodies darling.
As for his play, he has hurt the team a few times this year trying to bring the ball out from the back of the endzone, getting stopped short of the 20. That poor judgement is on him, and is attributes to his feeling that he can run everyone back. This IMO, makes his play more about himself than the team. He wants the glory, and is not thinking of the cost of his decision.
Cribbs will go down as one of the best special team players ever, he needs to accept that as a good thing. The rest of his game is mediocre. As much as I like him, if he is traded or not resigned, I will not feel one way or another. Believe me, when he was going to the media about a new contract, I can gaurantee you that if some team offered up the big payday, Cleveland would have been in the rear view mirror very quickly.
2 million a year for a gunner and returner is assinine. He earned what he has made here, but if a younger more promising player is available you jump on it. Keeping a player for just sentimental reasons does not build a champion.

I think his whole twitter post or whatever the heck it is, is demonstrative of a society that does not know how to think before hitting the [send] button. It's one thing to let loose a barrage verbally, we often speak before thinking especially when angry but to physically type something out and then hit [send] . . . he deserves what he has coming back at him.

Just read the tweets, and all I have to say is **** him. To speak this way to the fans that got you where you are is sickening. I have no respect for him what so ever now. He actually removed it and replaced with 3 new tweets, proving even he knows what a douche he looks like.
We are fans, they are the players. He expects us to act as if he is someone special when the team constantly loses. I understand he is just one player, but his comments sound as if he thinks he is special. IMO just about everybody on the team busts their butt, he is not the only one. Then to act as if he should get some special treatment after a fumble that led to an easy score, is just bull.
These players need to learn that they get payed to win. We buy tickets to see them win, and when they don't win, I expect them to take the blame and show some humility. The fans didn't miss coverage, fumble, drop passes, and miss tackles, the players do. They are losing because they make mistakes, that is not the fans fault. Just as he is frustrated, he needs to think of the guy who spends thousands of dollars a year to watch the guys blow leads and find new ways to lose weekly.
Good riddance Josh, you killed any good memory I had of you. For the rest of the team, until you can perform on the level of a NFL team, keep your comments about the fans to yourself.

So here's what I don't understand. Why do people turn on someone who has been such a great player for this team and a great ambassador for the city so quickly? Why does it always have to be 'what have you done for me lately?'. What about all the blood, sweat, and tears he's poured in over the years? Doesn't that count for something?
That was your question.
It now appears you were asking a rhetorical question and not really interested in any answer.
If Joe Thomas ever throws the coaches under the bus, takes to the Media Circuit in an effort to get a new contract, pouts and publicly complains about not being used the right way, takes unnecessary risks in a perceived effort pump up his own marketability, and then blasts the fans via Twitter after he screws up...wait...he hasn't ever done any of those things.
Here's the very-short answer to the question you didn't really ask: Some fans don't just take into account what a player does on the field. They take into account his actions off of it as well.
In spite of all that, if Cribbs was still the A-player that he was several years ago, sure, I'd want him re-signed. Unfortunately for all parties involved, he's obviously slower and unlikely to suck up his pride and accept an annual salary more in-line with what his future production is going to be. Some team which is desperate for a special-teams veteran who can solidify the position will over-pay him and maybe even get a couple more solid seasons out of him, but this is a rebuilding team, and he represents the past, not the future.
He was a great special teams player here, and one of the best of all time. He'll be remembered for that. But in the here and now, he no longer has the leverage he had in the past when he'd pout like a petulant child, and when you've lost your leverage, you're done.
There's no excuse for the drunken fans who nailed him without mercy, but just as they don't have an excuse for their behavior, Cribbs doesn't have any for his frequent moments of insincerity over the years, either.
And here's what Cribbs actually wrote: Quote:
"I see all the negativity on twitter after I gave my life to this (stuff)," he Tweeted. "So 2 all u who are against me (Expletive) all y'all. I'm still gonna do me!"
***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy. Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***

Hard to believe anyone is making a big deal out of this innocuous tweet.
Josh has had some criticizable interactions with the media, but I don't really believe this to be one.

I'm certainly not the voice of reason but....
To me Josh Cribbs is a the quintessential guy you hope to have as a diamond in the rough non-drafted FA. He was fantastic as what he did, namely be one of the best gunners in the history of special teams and he was the best non-elite speed returners the league has ever seen.
Now here's the rub.
As a great special teams player on a deplorable team he had a different standing than is usually the case. He was literally a shining light on this team but he certainly didn't have the innate skill set of a Josh Gordon, a Braylon Edwards or Kellen Winslow.
So what happens...he gets an inflated view of self...and all the wonderful things that he's done in the community and the wonderful things he's done on the field get a warped sense of place.
And it gets ugly with a contract dispute.
And it gets ugly with the loss of physical prowess.
I don't want to get into this but he's simply no longer an elite special teamer...or a great athlete...and it's trending down QUICK.
I hope he leaves simply so that I can remember him well. It's not his fault that we've sucked. He was one of the reasons I enjoyed watching this travesty of a team some games/years.
Now he's done...and it's going to get ugly for him...move on...play for two years elsewhere...get that money...and save it.

+1, I don't see the big deal.
Look at what Urlacher said about the Bears fans. Now he has had some Twitter outbursts. He complains about the boos in Chicago and then writes another one about how he doesn't "care about the media or the fans", lol
I have a sentimental love for Cribbs myself I guess. I'd at least like to offer him a vet-min contract, 1 or 2 years may be. I would like him to retire a Brown. He's one of the bright spots on these past dark years........

My point had nothing to do with Twitter ... it was just the trigger for my thoughts.
Where is the appreciation for a guy that has done so much for this team?
Where is the line drawn between appreciation and reality.
I believe most all Browns fans appreciate the contributions he has made to the Browns. I feel almost all Browns fans feel he's a stand up guy and is a fine role model for our younger players.
But I do believe fans get a little muddled when trying to seperate their emotions for a player from a realistic player evaluation of that same guy. Cribbs is still a pretty good return man. And the situation/condition he is in, I really don't attribute solely to him.
As I recall, he was asked to bulk up because the coaching staff at the time wished to turn him into a WR. So along with the muscle came some restrictions in terms of speed and eluciveness. It's less about weight as it is about bulk.
But the fact of the matter is, you want your fastest, most elucive person as your return man. And at this time, that looks to be Travis Benjiman, not Josh Cribbs.
Let's face it, for the most part Browns fans love and appreciate Bernie Kosar, but we all know he isn't a viable option as a starting QB for the Browns.
So I do believe how you emotionaly feel about a player and the reality of any given situation are two seperate things. Trying to combine the two into one equasion is what I consider to be very silly in terms of a football discussion.
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I have always felt that a kickoff returner needed to be sturdier than a punt returner, because of the high impact head-on collisions that happen on kickoffs. On punt returns, the returner is more likely to take shots from one side or the other, or from behind as much of the pursuit has gone past him when he heads upfield. On kickoffs, two forces often meet at full speed somewhere around the 20-25 yardline. Since Benjamin barely weighs 170 pounds, I'd be afraid he'd get killed by some 230-pounder on a kickoff - not to mention the inevitable fumble. I think Benjamin would be fine at PR, and I especially liked when we had both him and Cribbs back because it provides an immediate lead blocker who is going forward to take on the first defender downfield.

Devin Hester is 5'11" and 190 lbs.
Billy "White Shoes" Johnson was 5'9" and 170 lbs.
If you would be willing to use him as a slot reciever like many use smaller WR's in the NFL, making him a return man is no different. LB'er's knocking the crap out of you is no picnic.
Both in days gone by and today with Devin Hester, it shows speed and eluciveness produces quite well for kickoff return guys.
While I do understand your point, I believe the facts clearly show that you don't really need size to be a top notch kickoff returner.

Is it against the rules for a poster to chime in on the pun's if it's his name the puns are about?

He's thrown the head coach under the bus because he didn't get touches.
I seem to remember a certain RB on the team (who you seem to have a crush on) "throwing the coach under the bus" a couple weeks ago by wondering out-loud to the media why he didn't get the ball more. What is the difference between that and Cribbs asking for the ball more?
Is it that they play different positions? Or is it just that you like one player more than another? I don't seem to remember you calling TR a "me first" player...
The hypocrisy is amazing...

As so many other posters had pointed out, there was a clear difference between what Weeden and Cribbs said, and what Richardson said.
But I wouldn't expect the poster whose name is "CribbsHero" to be willing to accept it.

And that difference was?
Please help me, I'm a little slow, and you are dodging the question...
