I've been expecting this since the sale was announced.

Good riddance to Shurmur.

Kind of liked Heckert, but I don't get the doom and gloom over his departure. He had no proven success record here. He hit on some, he whiffed on some, and the team didn't win enough to justify consideration.

Wholly crap! This is more astonishing than me agreeing with the frog. I agree with PhilDawsonRules. Maybe the Mayans were right and the deciphers got the date wrong.

Don't go getting ahead of yourself. This team is going to be under many changes in the next few days. I was a proponent of keeping Heckert here but came around to the realization that he wasn't the answer and that when a new regime takes over, they're going to bring in who they want.

Heckert gave his approval to some really boneheaded decisions, maybe even making those decisions himself and he needs to be held accountable.

I hope that they not only get rid of Heckert and Shurmur, but every one of the coaches. I don't want a remnant left of the last regime in the front office or coaching staff.

No GM has been perfect and none ever will be but Heckert probably has been in the top 3 in the league in his time here. Its going to be hard to find someone better.

So you want to wait for it to be build again in a new way? Hope that we find someone better at drafting to build it? That means you will have to wait the years it takes to build it again.

Rome wasnt built in a day.

The end of the world hasn't happened with the new ownership. I think that things will be better now than before and Heckert staying has no part in it. Shurmur is the real problem and Heckert's approval of drafting a 28-y.o. rookie QB is a serious respectability problem.

I don't know where you get the idea in your head that Heckert was Top 3 in GMs in the league since under his tutelage the team has improved in some areas but has regressed at the most important position on the field, namely the QB position. The QB is your field general and you can't win without competence there. To be fair, a very good field general with poor troops can't do enough to win either.

New regime, new plans? Mike Tyson once said, "everybody has a plan till they get hit".

At this point I am numb with change. From Carmen, to Butch, Savage and Crennel, Mangini, and now these guys H&H.

Next up prepare to hear the bio's and their plan, how committed they are etc. etc. etc..

How about this plan: get a quarterback.

I watched Jimmy Johnson "A Football Life". He had Belichick on his boat. He said "this was a once a league about the quarterback, now it is a league dominated by the quarterback." Both Belichick and Johnson said with all the league rule changes. (defenseless receivers)(quarterback hits) now the defensive players are afraid. The game has changed.

Wonder why all the prime candidates for coaches want the quarterback position settled?

H&H said their most important decision was at quarterback. Well how did that work out? Goodbye fellas and oh, by the way take Brandon with you.

Once this team has truly identified a quarterback to lead a team then all the talk about plans, the future, and a Super Bowl will have true meaning.

As far the next regime I have heard all the hype before. Show me results.

The way I see it: The Browns are in the middle of a rebuild right now. Mike Holmgren used relationships to bring an experienced coordinators on both sides of the ball, and then brought in a rookie head coach. Holmgren also brought us an excellent talent evaluator in Tom Heckert. I feel that Holmgren had a clear strategy: Bring in young players, bring in a young hc, let it grow for a couple years, then sprinkle in a few free agents and BINGO, we have something. - This strategy was working. Heckert drafted excellently in the first and second rounds. We have a winnable defense and some great rookies on offense. - Youngest roster in the league and we would have been predicted to win over 9 games next year. - Especially with the aging teams in our division. - Holmgren's plan was working as I expected it to, because, after all, Holmgren has a ton of football knowledge.

What is about to happen will go down as one of the greatest travesties in Browns history. Jimmy Haslam brings in Joe Banner for one reason and one reason only - say the right things, kiss up to the right people, and most importantly: make money. - Banner certainly was not brought in here because he knows how to run the football side of things.

What I see happening over the next few years:

Zero strategy, zero plan.

Too many Chiefs and not enough Indians to make anything significantly positive happen.

Poor drafts because again, too many Chiefs and not enough Indians.

After three years of some of the worst football we have seen, this team will be in total disarray. Banner will be fired.

WE WILL ALL BE LEFT WONDERING WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED HAD HECKERT STAYED AND BANNER NEVER CAME. - I'm 100% sure of it.

As somebody who has purchased season tickets over the last few years, I cannot begin to tell you how upset I am that Haslam would let a proven GM leave so he could bring in an unproven one.

I'll keep rooting, but I will not be renewing my tickets this year.

Don't fool yourselves guys. We are way worse off now than we ever were. Trust me. The next three years will be a complete disaster.

Jimmy Donovan of Channel 3 is reporting the same thing

He seems to think that Bruce Ariens and some guy from Arizona, Horton or Norton are front runners as HC (I'd get 100% behind Ariens). Minor talk of McDaniels is still flying around and I've heard nothing about Lombardi (which makes me happy) All according to Donovan and you can probably find his report on WKYC.com

I dont know but someone should look up how many NFL teams have CEO's. Perhaps its common I just cant recall ever hearing of 1.

So, a man that was successful and turned a business started by his father into an $18 billion dollar truck stop empire doesn't know how to hire the right people for their business?

I'm sorry, but I'll listen more to what Haslam says than what you have to say. And, it's not like he's a new owner. He did have part ownership in the Putzburgh team. He's not a novice to how the NFL works. Al Lerner knew business, and he'd figured out how the NFL worked had he lived. Randy Lerner inherited the team and made tons of money despite his lack of knowledge about the NFL and his desire to stay away from it, leaving business operations to Holmgren.

I just want wholesale clearing of anything related to the front office and the coaching staff. I don't want Jauron here. I don't want Heckert here. I don't want anyone in those positions retained. Not a single one.

Good. I hope we wind up with Bruce Arians. It's even better that he likes our roster because it is a talented roster at many key spots.

I think that he could do a nice job with a guy like Weeden. He could work with him for a year, and see if he can get him turned around, and tailor the offense to what he does best.

I'd be ok with Bruce Arians coming back. He did a heck of a job keeping the Colts on track all throughout the season. I just want him to commit to the run game if he's here.

People who know new Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam III and CEO Joe Banner insist they are looking to provide their franchise a fresh start and a new culture, which is one reason they will fire both coach Pat Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert, according to sources.

Wanting a fresh approach means not hiring a coach looking for a second chance such as New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, who had been linked to Cleveland as a potential head coaching candidate but is not expected to be a candidate.

Cleveland is expected to make a major run at a college coach such as Oregons Chip Kelly or Penn States Bill O'Brien or search for a bright young offensive NFL mind.

Cleveland already has hired San Diego Padres vice president Brent Stehlik as its executive vice president and chief revenue officer, a move that will be announced soon, according to league sources.

But these type of moves prove that the Browns brain-trust wants to clean up Cleveland, which entails cleaning house.

Earlier this month, the Browns hired Alec Scheiner to be their new team president. Scheiner had spent eight years with the Cowboys, including the past five as senior vice president and general counsel.

Heckert, 45, was the first person hired by former team president Mike Holmgren in 2010 and he rebuilt the Browns, infusing them with talent and adding depth to a roster that had none.

But his status became in doubt when Haslam bought the team and hired Banner to replace Holmgren.

He transformed Cleveland's roster through the draft and a few key free-agent signings. In 2012 alone, he selected running back Trent Richardson, quarterback Brandon Weeden and offensive tackle Mitchell Schwartz -- who all started as rookies -- in the first three rounds.

The Browns are 9-22 in two seasons under the 47-year-old Shurmur.

Well, I'll admit, I'm not a fan of firing Heckert, Shurmur, eh,,, I don't care. But I wish him well. Hes a class guy.

As for Haslam, the man has NOT built a business the size of Pilot/Flying J by himself. He had a team of people around him that did it. And he hired that team of people that went on to hire others and overall, they've been wildly successful.

There is one major difference here. Haslam didn't grow up in the NFL Business so he hasn't got that DEEP DEEP knowledge built up over decades of learning from his father and by mistakes not to make again.

For better or worse, he got his tutoring from the Rooney Family and honestly, Love them or hate them, they've pretty much run a model organization since the late 60's and they have the Lombardies to prove it. I can't think of a better school of thought to come from.

So, he's gonna screw up here and there.. it's almost impossible not to.

But for the moment I have to give the guy some room to move around, shift things, get comfortable with the organization and the folks he has running it. He paid for that right. One Billion times he paid for that right.

But I also admit to not being overjoyed with the Banner hire. But the truth is, I don't know enough about the man except that the first thing we hear he wants to do is put the roster in the hands of the HC. I'm telling you, that makes me nervous. I see what happened to Reid when his VOR went away. VOR is Voice of Reason and that man was Heckert in my view.

I saw Banner let Reid run wild, spend a bunch of money on High priced FA's (all great players no doubt). CAP be damned, Full speed ahead.

I know of no HC that has final say on the roster. Most DO have the final say on who's playing this week, but not on the guys he has to chose from.

(correction, Fisher may, Shanahan may, Payton may, Belichick may, If Parcells came out of retirement, he may, same could be said perhaps for Holmgren) but those guys have Cred.. TONS of cred. Reid would fit into the mold also, until recently. He's either lost his touch, or he's burnt out or he's lost someone in his FO that made him think before reacting (or is that over reacting)

That's my only problem with Banner and Haslam so far.

But again, let's see what they do. Even if they pick people that I have initial reservations about, I still feel compelled to at least give them the benefit of the doubt. They are, after all, experienced and successful business people, one in football, one not. Let's see how it works out.

I should point out my dream scenario.. Ariens as HC and Heckert as GM. Ariens can happen, I think heckert is gone.

When Heckert took over the "foundation" he inherited from Uncle Eric was

Rubin
Dqwell
Thomas
Mack

3 holdovers from Savage and 1 from Mangini's top 10 pick and selling of BE and Winslow, 2 former 1st rounders.

He inherited 18 (!) needs

How many are there now?

I think this means that the WCO will definitely NOT be the offensive philosophy next season. I expect that putting the offense on the map by either a vertical scheme is going to be the answer. I don't read that as meaning that the offensive philosophy will be new at the core, but will be new to what the Browns fans have expected in the past. It won't be just AFC North football with the smash-mouth run game.

I happen to think that Bruce Arians might be the leading contender for the job. Not because he's never been a head coach (he's the interim right now), but because he can game plan very well. He develops run and pass plays out of any formation.

Hmm, the 2nd bean counter Banner hired? What's left of HIS job description then?

But thank god there's still no article saying that Banner will make football decisions, so it can't be true

So, you're giving me an Obama spiel. Truth is, he hired the right people to be successful and become the cream of the crop of the truck stop business.

Of course, nobody has said that he's operated every cash register himself, stocked every location by himself or any of that. Being a successful businessman means you understand how to delegate authority and to hire the best people you can find.

As for Reid getting the power in Philly, that wasn't Heckert's doing or Banner's. Reid made a power play directly to the owner and the owner sided with him. Reid managed to get Banner ousted.

Thanks,was wondering about that myself.
I also had Watson and MoMass, not cornerstones but starters at least.
Fickle fans.
In one breathe they say we have a fine nucleus of young players, the future will be OK.The next breathe they will say it doesn't matter if Heck gets fired because of the team's losing record.
Not even the Mayans could predict the future, but I've got this bad feeling that I'm not going to like the JimmyandJoe Show.

Actually, Watson was brought in by Heckert in his first FA period, but I consider him AVG at best and he was a stop gap solution. MoMass is a well below AVG starting WR that needed to be replaced.

While I have a very bad feeling with Jimmy and Joe myself, I'll wait for their "moves" before I'll drop the hammer....but I'm sure they won't "disappoint" me.

This has ALL the ingredients for a power hungry mess waiting to happen...and the Cleveland Browns are the training ground for NFL "maybes" again. Heckert was the only proven guy at his job since our rebirth. Now we'Re back to: 1st time owner learning on the job and doing rookie mistakes, 1st time football guy (Banner) learning on the job/overestimating his "abilities" (yeah I know Joe, you hired Reid, you're smart, ok ok VERY smart) and most probably 1st time HC or failed former HC and puppet 1st time GM, ex-director of personell somewhere (think Kokinis)

They all can train on the job, we bring in new terminology on Offense and we start from scratch

We should file a form to the NFL to be re-named Cleveland Rebuilds, as we constantly tear down the house before we even build it. We're a league wide running gag

Thanks again Mr Lerner, you useless piece of crap couldn't even sell the team at the right time

You all know I wanted Heckert to stay. Now I have a Facebook community to shut down.

I'm not getting nervous yet. See how it plays out. I still think the Lombardi talk is just all rumor.

Shurmur? Yeah, he needs to go...

Does your hatred of Obama seep into everything?

Go the hell back up to what I wrote.. what you'll see if you take your OBAMA HATE sunglasses off is that I said the same damn thing you said..

No, but I made reference to it since you did. That's exactly what he said. To be fair, it was Elizabeth Warren who he stole it from.

But, still, the point sticks that he's the one who made a success out of the truck stop business.

So, spare me. You don't like it that Heckert is going to fired so you make some silly comment like you did. Do you have something against Haslam because he was a minority owner of the Steelers?

I'll give Haslam credit for building every nickel of the truck stop empire and it wasn't his employees that gave him the business sense.

I also do not understand the whole the sky is falling and we are doomed forever if we fire the GM or the coach. We do not know what the thought process is for hiring a head coach. We do not know who they are or have been talking to. We do not know if they have already begin talks with someone for the job. Before we start throwing Jimmy and Joe under the bus and writing them off as the worse owner and CEO in the history of the NFL can we please wait until they make a decision. Condemning them and this team based on speculation by reporters and working your self up in fits of anger and depression is just not productive. Step back from the cliff, put down the gun, and don't take all those pills just yet. How about we wait and see if the sky really does fall.

You may now return to all your doom and gloom........

Getting rid of Schurmur is addition by subtraction.

Continuity only makes sense if you think you have the right front office and coaching personel in place.

Pat is a below average NFL coach. Don't see why anyone would want to keep such a guy around, especially with a team full of young players.

There's a case to be made for Heckert but what cornerstone players has he drafted? His selections have been solid but he hasn't exactly been drilling homeruns at will.

Even if he were drafting homeruns at will, I suspect that his record wouldn't have even mattered. People forget how lacking in talent the Browns were before he became the GM.

You just hope that if Heckert is gone, that he doesn't become the GM somewhere else, and builds a Superbowl team.

So 1 cornerstone player in 3 years? When you start 22 guys that's not going to get you anywhere.

I think Heckert has brought in enough talent to warrant a look but in the pantheon of NFL GM's where does he rank?

If he's not a top 10 guy, regime change dictates that a new owner is likely to look elsewhere.

You can't make all the right selections and that's not really what I'm advocating for but when the GM drafts just one blue chip player in 3 seasons, when he made 12 selections in the first 3 rounds (4 being #1's) it isn't exactly a favorable argument for him.

I'm not saying he's done a poor job but if he's not exceptional, he's not going to survive a FO turnover. I'm not saying it is right, it just is what it is.

Sorry your going to have to give his brother and his dad some credit as well.
His dad was smart enough to give each of them tasks that complemented the buisness overall.

Haslam is a numbers and marketing guy. Its all he cares about here. He has said it over and over and over again. What can we do to market the team better. How can we make the fan experence better.

Banner is the same. Hes a numbers guy. The new President is a numbers guy. The new VP is a numbers guy. See any trends here?

So lets fire the only real football guy in the building, yeah that will impress and inspire me to be believe these guys have even the slightest clue on how Football teams are built on the field.

If you need 3 years to be a winner you got here 2 years to early. Get it done Browns.

I think you could add Taylor Ward Gordon Little to that list. Hughes Winn Fort MJM Weeden Swartz T-Rich etc all have the ability as well. The list is longer thats just off the top of my head.

Heckert has been the most consistant GM we have had from the start and maybe for the past 40 years or longer. I would easly put him in the top 10 of GM's in the League. I would actually rate him in the top 3-5. Ernie is maybe the only one better I can think of.

There are maybe less then 10 guys left on this roster from before he got here.
He took a team with holes everywhere and atm we are this next draft away from contending. Funny how fast people forget how bad we actually were.

If you need 3 years to be a winner you got here 2 years to early. Get it done Browns.

Haslam is a numbers and marketing guy. Its all he cares about here

That being true he would want to put a product on the field that is the best of the best. As a marketing guy and numbers guy (money hungry) his job is easier and makes more money if the product is desirable. No one wants to go out and promote a crappy product. The thought that Jimmy bought this team for it to fail just shows a lack of common sense.

Jimmy is a competitive guy and wants to win. Does he know everything about football? No Has he admitted that? Yes. Is there people out there that are better than what we have as far as coaching and GM? Yes.

Again can we just wait until we have something to cry about.

I don't forget how bad we were but it's a results oriented business.

- How many blue chip players has he drafted?
- How many of those guys have continued to perform at a high level?
- How has he capitalized on a large sum of 1st days selections?

Even with upgraded talent, which I think we have, the Browns have won 9 games in two years with Heckert steering the ship on 3 drafts. Holmgren had his hand on the wheel during that stretch but ultimately those guys are connected for a reason.

I like Heck, think he has found some nice values in the draft but you don't win games with a collection of solid selections. You win games by getting difference makers. If you're picking at the top of every round for 3 straight seasons you have to do better than one blue chip player.

Again, he's done a good job but expecting someone to survive a regime change that hasn't brought in more than 1 franchise player in 3 seasons is a bit of stretch. It's not that I 100% agree with the Browns getting rid of him but it is the nature of the business. You win with stars in the NFL and the Browns don't have any.

The Browns were 5-11 when Heckert took over and 5-11 when he gets his pink slip handed tonight around 11 PM.
Mangini set the franchise back with his 2 horrendous drafts.
Heckert had to hit some HRs right out the gate. But he didn't.
It wasn't just good enough to draft "starters"
he had to bring in "impact starters'
Joe Haden is a good CB. But I watched A.J Green and Plaxico Burress score TDs on him. One is a superstar and one is almost out of football.
Haden isn't even a Top 5 CB.He's not a "shutdown" CB
Montario Hardesty. Heckert reached on him like he did Jordan Cameron.
that 2010 Draft is a C at best.
Lavaou only started because Heckert didn't bother upgrading the OG spot.
Lavaou couldn't start for the AFC North playoff teams.
His 2011 Draft, again no difference makers. Solid players at best.
Taylor hasn't shown a dominant streak on a consistant basis.
Little has yet to even eclipse 800 yards in season. Or even have multiple TD game yet.
Sheard is okay. But his QB pressures and sack totals dropped in 2012.
Marecic and Cameron may not even be on this team in 2013.

How many blue chip players have the teams in your division drafted during the time Heckert was GM? AJ Green is the only major one I can think of. In regards to your other two questions, isn't that more dependent on coaching and player development more than the GM?

Personally, I don't have an opinion about Shurmur one way or another, other than the ties to the WCO, which has been the foundation of the offense.

Heckert has done more than an acceptable job. I would prefer to see him stay. I could not say that for any of the other personnel directors.

Apparently, theyre going to do this ASAP. Like tomorrow or sometime this week.
That eliminates one of my top guys Mike McCoy and ANY other playoff bound coach.

Other HC candidates I could support:

Brian Schottenheimer (Jets)
David Shaw (Stanford)

Young, O minded and fiery would be my credentials.

Haslam cant miss here or his era starts off extremely poor.

I don't know we are going to hire anybody immediately. I understand the firing part.....but hey, if we have our targets identified, get them on board ASAP. That can't hurt anything. The sooner the better IMO.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

I'm becoming a Kyle Shanahan fan.

The wco is a proven and time-tested winner, but if we switch, his ability to adapt the offense to a rookie 4th rounder showed me he can do things like a real HC.

***Gordon, I really didn't think you could be this stOOpid, but you exceeded my expectations. Wussy.
Manziel, see Josh Gordon. Dumbass.***
