I figured we should have a thread with all the names being discussed for head coach. It would be great if we could keep it to coaches who are actually linked to our team. Here are a few guys that I have heard about with the sources linking them to us: Chris Mortensen Quote:
As NFL owners and executives revisit the success of college coaches at the pro level, Penn State's Bill O'Brien may be on more short lists than Oregon's Chip Kelly and that would include the Cleveland Browns and Philadelphia Eagles, according to league sources.
Jason La Canfora
Quote:
With most expecting Nick Saban to remain with Alabama (Cleveland owner Jimmy Haslam would have interest in him, sources said), Patriots coordinator Josh McDaniels is expected to merit strong consideration for the Browns' job as well.
Anyone else seen any articles linking us to anybody else? Also, thoughts on the guys mentioned above.

They have said they wanted to move quickly. Quickly firing or quickly hiring or both I know not.
That would eliminate anyone moving on in the playoffs.
I think it's all over but the formalities. They know their guy and need only satisfy league rules.
I say GM and HC are in place by January 7th. Just a guess though.

I have mixed feelings about O'Brien. What he did at Penn State, considering the circumstances, is nothing short of miraculous. In addition, he took an avg (at best) QB in McGloin and turned him into a top notch passer this season. As a Penn State alum and fan, I'd hate to see him go. He's been able to bring in top notch recruits to a university that won't be eligible for a bowl for 3 more seasons, which tells me that he is someone players want to play for.
As a Browns fan, considering the work he did in one off season/season with McGloin, I'd love to see what he could do with Weeden or whomover is the QB for the Browns next year. From what I understand, he has a $9 million buyout at PSU, but money is no object for Haslam. Also, if he leaves PSU I would tend to question his integrity with some of what he's preached about loyalty and team. (Admitedly, that could be the PSU homer coming out in me.)

I'll be honest and admit that I haven't followed much PSU since Joe was head coach. What is O'Brien's offensive philosophy?

It's an attacking vertical game. He really utilizes his TEs (a la N. England). He also installed a "NASCAR" no huddle offense that was very effective. His TEs and WRs as well as McGloin were PSU record setters this season.

O'Brien right now I think is top on my list... he was coach of the year for college IMO and has a good knowledge of the NFL.

I haven't seen any of these guys connected to our opening as of yet.
David Shaw isn't leaving Stanford as he just signed an extension (he is also a Stanford alum).

Why is that?
My honest list would also include David Shaw, Nick Saban, Josh McDaniels and Bruce Arians.
Also, what is with the Schottenhiemer love? I'm under the impression that he has been a major flop as a head coach.

Wasn't there ramblings of Bruce Arians as a candidate? Articles?
My hope is either him or Kyle Shanahan.

Schottenheimer hasn't shown me anything that makes me think he'd be a great HC right now... he has the pedigree but that's about it.... he's been alright as a coordinator, but there are others out there right now that I'd consider before him.

And there has been no mention of him being a candidate for any team's head coaching job, let alone ours.

Theres a number of articles saying he will be a candidate to fill a jobor that he is ready, but nothing solid.
I'll take a chance on Klye Shanahan first anyway. He'd get good counsel.

Why is that?
I've laid it out in the past so I'll just hot point it.
I live in Duck country. So I've seen too much Duck football quite frankly. Here's what I see. Kelly isn't a good game coach. He is a master of his system. When faced with disciplined defenses he never once that I saw changed what he did offensively. Stanford beat him as did Auburn and OSU because of his inflexibility. He's coached the same system his entire life. I don't want any part of bringing in a college coach that has to change his coaching system to transition to the NFL. He has a massive ego. It's well documented by the local press' dealings with him. I don't see him changing. His system is perfect for the situation he's in. Oregon's offense is a roster of three star track athletes. Most 5'7"-5'10" and well under 200 pounds. Guys that the other schools aren't after hard because they're running more traditional offenses. That won't fly in the NFL. My worst fear is Kelly coming here and trying to play college ball in the NFL. Drafting Gino Smith or bringing in Vick or Tebow to try to run his O. I see disaster all over it. Setting the team back for a long time. Gino is a bum and isn't anything close to RG3. Vick ugh. Tebow, just kill me. Kelly will crash and burn in a massive Spurrier 2.0 mess.

I don't want a "cowboy" is all. I don't want someone coming in here thinking they can just wipe all the work done because it isn't his to begin with. Come in, asses, evaluate and determine who fits and who doesn't. Don't just wipe the slate clean just to wipe it clean and start over. We have some nice young players here that could really benefit from some good coaching/seasoning.
Get a decent draft, nab a few player when free agency starts and we have more than a fighting chance next year.

I don't think Kelly would bring the system that he is currently running. It wouldn't work in the NFL.
But I think the basics and what he believes in as an offensive philosophy is the right direct for the NFL.
He's always looked like a decent game day coach to me, but you obviously have seen more games than I.
you had a good run Hank.

The right fit and we could be in a wild card position.
Wrong choice and we irrelevant for 5 more years at least.

I agree that if Kelly runs an exact replica of the offense he runs right now he will fail. I think that he will try to adjust it. Quote:
Kelly will crash and burn in a massive Spurrier 2.0 mess.
I don't think that is a fair comparison. One of the main reasons Spurrier failed was because he wasn't willing to work long hours. Kelly seems like (you would know better than me) a workaholic. Half-butting it won't be one of the reasons Kelly fails.
Quote:
He has a massive ego.
Isn't that a requirement to be a coach in the NFL? He would fit right in.
Quote:
Drafting Gino Smith or bringing in Vick or Tebow to try to run his O.
Why go after those guys when Dennis Dixon and Darren Thomas are available?

That's the thing. I don't want a coach that has to change his system as much as Kelly would have to, to be our next coach. I'm tired of being a proving (failing) ground. Lets get someone that has head coaching experience in a system that at least resembles a pro style. Kelly's offensive philosophy is no huddle, snap the ball every thirteen seconds, go for it on fourth down all the time, because he has a roster of speed deeper than yours. The pros have a 53 man roster not an 80+ man. Kelly coaches the way he does because of depth. Depth no NFL team has. Yes some teams run the no huddle. Manning is a master of it. How many Payton's are there in the world? RG3 runs a variation of the Duck's O. How many RG3's are there? I want a coach that can take our team and start winning with it. Not a coach that needs a total reboot of his roster to try to run an unproven O, while hoping for lightning to strike and RG4 to enter the draft, at our draft spot. No thanks.

Agreed. My list would include....
Saban ( he's an NFL coach to begin with). He did fine with the Fish before he quit without having a QB. However, will be shocked if he comes.
O'Brien - another guy who was an NFL guy to begin with. I love how he made that O at PSU look competent with that below average talent level.........he might be number one on my list.
Shannahan - as toad said, he can adjust an O to fit his talent, and I like that.
McCoy - great offensive mind, and I think he's ready.
Against logic, the most effective armor is willful ignorance.

not only is your usage of the word "there" totally incorrect, but you even butchered the spelling. the word you were trying to type is "their," but it's still wrong.

I doubt that happens. Childress is a Shurmur clone (or is Shurmur a Childress clone?). His overall record wasn't horrible, 37-35, but I seem to remember people hating his gameday decisions (sounds familiar).

I'd like to see either Mangini, Arians, or Billick as our coach next year.
McDaniels and all of Bill's lackeys need to stay far away from Berea. Bill is the only reason NE has had constant success.

I'm betting on youth at the helm. Under 40 at least.
Kyle Shanahan might be nice. Is there an RG IV, V or VI out there though?
