Why's this guy so special? Arizona was pretty bad this year. Why wouldn't we look at the head coach instead of the D-Coordinator? I just really never heard of the guy and never thought of the Cardinals Defense as being particularly outstanding.
Therefore I'm thinking if he is on his way to Arizona, Banner is trying to get rid of the Rooney Rule ASAP. Then, when they get the guy they want for the job, they can pounce on him

You answered your own question...the Rooney Rule. It allows them to interview Kelly/Saban and immediately hire them if they accept the job without any further delay.
Go Browns!!

lol, My real question was for anyone who has much knowledge of the Arizona Cardinals to come out and say if he's a real coaching candidate, or if my theory is correct (that we're trying to satisfy the Rooney Rule ASAP so we can get deals done before they leave town)

I have watched nearly every Cardinals game the past three season. (I have NFL Sunday Ticket, my brother doesn't. He is a Cardinals fan. It happens.) The Cardinals defense plays hard is a generally pretty good. Their numbers were bad this year, but I attribute a lot of that to their horrendous offense.
The second half of 2011 their defense was pretty much unstoppable.
He is a Dick LeBeau protege and runs a 3-4 defense.

From what I've seen he is a good coach... but I don't think we'd seriously consider him for the HC position...

If we just needed a black guy to interview to comply with the Rooney Rule we would just interview Gary Brown or George Warhop.
Usually front office guys don't fly out of state just to comply with the Rooney Rule. While I don't think we will hire Ray Horton, I think the front office is looking at as many options as possible before making a decision (unlike Holmgren who only interviewed Shurmur and some black guy I can't remember).
Also, as I said earlier, the Fiesta Bowl is in Arizona. Oregon is in the Fiesta Bowl. Chip Kelly is the head coach of Oregon. Flying to Arizona could be a way to kill two birds with one stone.

First off I do not believe that Haslam and Banner are even qualified to conduct an interview for a head coach in the NFL.
Haslam has admitted as much. He said he is leaning on Banner. Banner built a mens clothing business before being hired by his buddy Laurie.
In Philly Banner negotiated contracts and basically was responsible for financial aspects of the Eagles business.
So what questions are they going to ask a head coaching prospect? When asked about the traits they were looking for in a head coach the reply was "strong leadership, attention to detail, motivator" etc, etc. Poster cliches.
Chip Kelly zero NFL experience. Leading college kids is not quite the same as a NFL locker room where you have players who make more money then you do.
Zone read spread offense? Remember June Jones? He was going revolutionize pro football with the "run and shoot offense". Later to called "the chuck and duck".
The spread works in college because they don't have the athletes to cover 3 and 4 receiver sets. In addition they are not facing zone blitz packages like the Steelers run.
Recipe for disaster a college coach with no NFL experience, a quarterback who stated he could not run that system. In addition a rookie quarterback who has not proven he can run any system. A former contract business guy who will have control of all football operations and reports to an owner who has zero knowledge about the NFL. And they want to turn the keys over to a college coach who has never been inside a NFL locker room.
Please !!! at least get a guy who has NFL roots.
At least seek out Lovie Smith and Jon Gruden.
This may be put me on "the emotional cliff".

So, what is the official list of interviews so far?
1.) Doug Marrone (Syracuse) 2.) Dirk Koetter (OC of Atlanta Falcons) 3.) Ray Horton (DC of Arizona Cardinals) <-- Possible Rooney Rule Complaiance
Any other people I'm missing?

You are funny. Banner has run the Eagles for quite a while, and Haslam was a minority owner for the Steelers, yet they have no idea, while a guy like you that posts on a message board seems to know more than they do....GMAB.
Saying Banner has no idea how to find a coach is assinine.........Andy Reid

That could be true, but why do that when you could try an line up an interview with a legitimate HC candidate that meets the criteria in Lovie Smith?

I get it.
I just don't get all the doom and gloom about Banner. The fact is he did a great job in Philly, yet he is being thrown under the bus before he's actually done anything here. It is sad what has become of this fanbase.

No, what is sad is what has been put on the field since the Browns have been back.

True. I question if the reason the fanbase is so gloom/doom is because of what has been on the field. How many of the 5 or 6 changes have worked out...

Definite Rooney rule compliance. Whether or not he is a legitimate candidate from Haslam/Banner's point of view, he satisfies the Rooney Rule.

The Pats have gotten away from any semblance to it,they're predominately 2 tights. The Redskins didn't run it vs the Browns, same for the Seahawks vs the niners.Granted those are the only times I've seen either team, but having a running QB doesn't make you a spread O. The Packers ran the spread alot in thier march to the SB acoupla years ago.The one time I saw them this year not so much. But,yes the Pats, skins and seahawks are doing quite well this year.
Indecision may,or maynot,be my problem

I think Heckert is obviously much more capable than Savage, but there were plenty of people who absolutely loved Savage, too- to the organization's detriment when fan outrage trumped the decision made on his and Collins' power struggle. To hell with what we think. The results on the field will be the end-all.

Huh? Brady is the shotgun pretty much every play. They run a no huddle. Their tight ends are two of the most frightening receiving threats in the league. No semblance of the spread.

Good point. RGIII didn't play. You know that, right?

Both the 49ers and Seahawks run the read option.

So you're telling me that a spread O is;shotgun formation,no huddle,read option?
You didn't mention 4 and 5 wide receivers sets. You know, the spread you out part of the scheme, that none of those teams you mentioned use.

I was thinking if they are potentially interested in Horton as a DC then interviewing him now gives them both compliance with the Rooney rule and a jump start in the event he is let go in Arizona when the their new HC and GM come to town, which is highly likely.

Ahem... Cleveland Browns' Joe Banner in Arizona hunting Ducks' coach Chip Kelly, report says By Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer on January 01, 2013 at 10:10 PM, updated January 01, 2013 at 10:32 PM Print Email View full size Sirius XM radio reported Oregon coach Chip Kelly is No.1 on the Browns list. Rick Browner, Associated Press CLEVELAND -- Will Browns CEO Joe Banner be able pry coach Chip Kelly away from Oregon and from Banner's former team, the Eagles, who are also in hot pursuit? Knowing that he has to move quickly, Banner flew to Arizona Tuesday primarily to interview Kelly, who's Ducks are playing Kansas State Thursday night in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, according to CBS Sports' Jason LaCanfora. Kelly is the No. 1 candidate on the Browns' list according to Adam Caplan of Sirius XM, and also the primary target of the Eagles, according to the Philadelphia Enquirer. Banner also interviewed Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton, and satisfied the Rooney Rule in the process, but is primarily in the desert hunting Duck. Kelly, 49, arrived at media day in Arizona Tuesday for Thursday night's game and promptly deflected questions about fleeing to the NFL. "I've got a game to play,'' Kelly said. "We're playing in the Fiesta Bowl. That's the biggest thing in my life. If I allowed other things to get into my life, then they would be distractions, but there aren't. Our focus 100 percent is on the Fiesta Bowl.'' Kelly is one of at least three top college coaches the Browns will pursue in their aggressive search for the next NFL superstar. The others are Penn State's Bill O'Brien, the reigning Big 10 Coach of the Year, and Syracuse's Doug Marrone -- both of whom are also being heavily pursued by the Eagles. The Browns are Bills are schedule to interview Marrone this week, according to Alex Marvez of Fox Sports. The Browns will not confirm interviews or comment on candidates until a coach is hired, owner Jimmy Haslam said Monday. Last January, after defeating Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl, Kelly turned down an offer to coach the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after going deep into negotiations, saying he had "unfinished business to complete'' with the Ducks. He returned and led Oregon to an 11-1 mark heading into the Thursday night's game to run his four-year mark to 45-7. Along the way, his high-flying Ducks scored 40 or more points in each of the 11 victories, and 50 or more points on seven occasions. The watershed game came against Colorado, a 70-14 victory. Kelly's No. 4 Ducks have gone to four straight BCS Bowl games, including a loss to Auburn in 2011 BCS national championship game. His stunning record, high-octane offense and flirtation with the Bucs have NFL teams clamoring, but he's remaining mum for now. "My heart is to win today and that's it," Kelly said. "I know everybody wants to hear a different answer. And I know that at times when I don't give you guys the answer that you guys want, then I'm being evasive. I'm not being evasive." Kelly has even more incentive to jump to the NFL this season, what with NCAA sanctions coming to Oregon in the Spring for recruiting violations under Kelly's watch. The Ducks face a possible bowl ban, loss of scholarships, and restrictions on recruiting and televised games. So it's no wonder the Browns and Eagles are in hot pursuit, and that some of the other five teams with vacancies might jump on board. "My whole thing since I've been here is that I'm going to do the best job I can every single day," Kelly said. "If that's good enough that other people look at me sometimes, I don't really care about that. I think too many people live in the future. We live in the moment." Kelly's frantic-paced zone-read option scheme is gaining traction in the NFL, where the Washington Redskins and Seattle Seahawks are running versions of it with Robert Griffin III and Russell Wilson. Overall, the NFL is trending toward college-style schemes, where it's about fast-paced offense first and defense later. Of course, the Browns might have to find a quarterback to fit the scheme, with Brandon Weeden admitting Monday "I don't think I can the run the zone read.'' The Browns also have Colt McCoy and Thad Lewis who can run. The other two college coaches the Browns are set to interview, O'Brien, and Marrone, are also offensive-minded coaches with a pedigree in high-speed scoring. O'Brien was offensive coordinator of the scoring-dynamo Patriots last season when they averaged -- points, and Marrone was coordinator of the high-scoring Saints from 2006-2008. Whether or not the Browns land Kelly remains to be seen. They'll certainly have some competition. But Banner is already in Arizona, giving it the ol' college try. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ss...t_river_default
you had a good run Hank.

I hope then that Kelly looks at our QB situation, roster, and passes. The Eagles pick before us in the draft, plus they already have Jackson, Maclin, Vick, and McCoy.

People here almost unanimously praise Heckert for turning over an old and slow roster into a young and fast one. Interview a coach who wants speed and all of a sudden it's a problem.
Fans routinely complain, rightly so, about coaches 'not playing to win', which I take as to mean making weak, cowardly decisions on 4th downs, 2 point conversions, 'prevent prevents victories' etc, here is a guy who is hands down the best and most optimal coach in major college NFL football at game day coaching and it's rarely talked about.
The NFL is changing. 3+ receiver sets are the norm (60%+), shotgun is the norm (league average is close to 60%), and are we watching the Pats wear down opponents like the Texans in the second half or the Redskins and Seahawks demolishing opponents with rookie QBs?
Chip Kelly is going to be a superstar coach in the NFL. As far as innovation and creativity, he is the anti-Shurmur.

Hands down the best coach in major college football? Really??? Maybe the coach with the highest scoring team consistently, but no, he's not the best coach in major college football. My fellow Oregonian has already called out several reasons. Please read above.
EDIT: oops, it is in the Potential Head Coaches thread. here's a couple snippets. Frankly I think he's being kind, I would be harsher than him.
Quote:
I live in Duck country. So I've seen too much Duck football quite frankly. Here's what I see. Kelly isn't a good game coach. He is a master of his system. When faced with disciplined defenses he never once that I saw changed what he did offensively. Stanford beat him as did Auburn and OSU because of his inflexibility. He's coached the same system his entire life. I don't want any part of bringing in a college coach that has to change his coaching system to transition to the NFL. He has a massive ego. It's well documented by the local press' dealings with him. I don't see him changing. His system is perfect for the situation he's in. Oregon's offense is a roster of three star track athletes. Most 5'7"-5'10" and well under 200 pounds. Guys that the other schools aren't after hard because they're running more traditional offenses. That won't fly in the NFL. My worst fear is Kelly coming here and trying to play college ball in the NFL. Drafting Gino Smith or bringing in Vick or Tebow to try to run his O. I see disaster all over it. Setting the team back for a long time. Gino is a bum and isn't anything close to RG3. Vick ugh. Tebow, just kill me. Kelly will crash and burn in a massive Spurrier 2.0 mess.
Quote:
That's the thing. I don't want a coach that has to change his system as much as Kelly would have to, to be our next coach. I'm tired of being a proving (failing) ground. Lets get someone that has head coaching experience in a system that at least resembles a pro style. Kelly's offensive philosophy is no huddle, snap the ball every thirteen seconds, go for it on fourth down all the time, because he has a roster of speed deeper than yours. The pros have a 53 man roster not an 80+ man. Kelly coaches the way he does because of depth. Depth no NFL team has. Yes some teams run the no huddle. Manning is a master of it. How many Payton's are there in the world? RG3 runs a variation of the Duck's O. How many RG3's are there? I want a coach that can take our team and start winning with it. Not a coach that needs a total reboot of his roster to try to run an unproven O, while hoping for lightning to strike and RG4 to enter the draft, at our draft spot. No thanks.

I will add that on sites that allow Twitter quotes, feeds, whatever you want to call them, it's being reported that Chip Kelly is 95% a done deal. If the Browns give him power over the Draft and player transactions his signature will be on the dotted line right after Oregon's bowl game. The guy that is saying this has a pretty good track record on stuff like this in the past.
The same person also says that the Browns have been talking to Kelly for about a month.
So the FO saying they just decided Heckert's and Shurmur's fate in the last couple of weeks is pure BS if that is true. Which would not surprise me in the least.

I don't generally reply to myself but I thought I'd add that I'm not a fan of the idea of hiring any college coach with no NFL experience, or Chip Kelly in particular.
The main reason in Kelly's case would be that if he comes here we'll have to dump ALL of our QBs. No matter what you think of Weeden or McCoy at least they've been here and have had some success. But there's no way either is successful in Kelly's spread option. Hell, Weeden's already said he couldn't run it.
Chip Kelly comes in and we'll need to go out and get 2, maybe 3, new QB's. Additionally, we'd probably have to stock up on WRs because other than Benjamin I'm not sure our current group would suit the Oregon offense that would be coming to Cleveland.
And for the folks that will say that he'll adapt his offense to suit the personnel/weather/NFL style of play, I say, "Why would he?" If he's hired he'll be hired for his offensive "genius/style of play". He's not going to change what got him to the Big Dance. He'll live or die with what brung him, IMO.
Not a big fan of that idea.

our wr's would be fine, but you're right on about weeden. i think mccoy could still be the backup, though. not sure richardson is a great fit, however. Maybe we can trade those two to San Fran for Capernick and Lamichael James?

Not really BS.. Not at all.. If they've been talking to Kelly for a month and they decided on Heckert and Shurmur in the last two weeks, it could be perfectly legit,. ' They talk to Kelly, think they can get him.. Feel comfortable with that choice if that's the direction they decide on, then two weeks later, they make the determination that Heckert and Shurmur have to go and they go get Kelly..
Perfectly believable.

This post I totally agree with.. he's not going to change a thing.
