Haslam is in Arizona pitching this like crazy!!! He knows the weather in Cleveland alters game plans far too much in the winter months..

someone else mentioned that we could get Kelly's "guys" in the later rounds.. I agree w/ this as well. If he wants speed, it will be there on day 2 and 3.

Sure his track stars will be there. All 5'7" 175 pounds of them. The Steelers LB core can't wait. Ray Lewis may come out of retirement just for the fun of driving a bunch of midgets into the ground for a few more seasons. Lets fill our roster with a bunch of three star college players and go bang heads with the big boys. It's worked well for the Ducks. Again look at their record against Auburn, Stanford, and OSU.

so u bashing small fast WRs? u may wanna bash the patriots too then.

This goes back to my point... Awesome lets get a coach that has to change what he's done his entire coaching career and give him full control. Super sound idea...
...Am I losing my mind or have all of you?!

He wouldn't require full control from what I'm reading, more like control of the 53 which I think a coach should have anyway.

Also, coaches have to change what they do all the time. First-time coach coordinators don't have anything they "do" yet. Successful re-treads (Gruden/Cowher) have to deal with the fact that the NFL has caught up to whatever they did when they last coached. Fired re-treads got canned for what they did last time. See what I'm getting at?

No matter what, there's difficulties and new things to learn and adapt to for any new head coach. I'll easily take a guy who not only seems to do well adapting and learning new ways to innovate and win, he seems like he thrives at it.

He lost to Stanford in OT.. Stanford is a top 10 team.. Last year he lost to LSU and USC, both close games, both AP top 6 teams.... he also beat Stanford and Wisconsin.... The year before that he lost in the national championship game by a field goal...

I mean if you don't like the guy, thats fine, I don't really care.. but good lord you act like if he doesn't beat everybody then his whole system is a total failure... his only losses over the last few years have all be pretty close and all to very good teams... Meanwhile he has beaten some pretty good teams.... heck even Nick Saban loses every once in a while.

And for the record, Oregon's leading rusher was 5'11", 195.. Daryl Hawkins is one of their leading WRs at 6'4", 202... The TE is 6'4", 265.... Yea, he's got a lot of 5'11", 190 guys.. but if you look at the roster, he's also got some 6'4" - 6'5" WRs that are freshmen.. and there are about 3 QBs on the roster that are 6'3" or taller...

I'm still not sold on the guy either but it does sort of look like he's working with what he has more than he is recruiting short fast guys just to fit the system...

Please stop it with the New England comparisons. It's Brady that makes that team go!!! Not Danny Woodhead!!!

Quote:

There are already a lot of spread concepts in the NFL.. shotgun and 3+ WR sets are normal now. New England often runs no huddle with their smurfs (Woodhead, Welker, Branch) and they have had a top offense for 5+ years running. Redskins, Seahawks, and 49ers are all top 5 rushing teams in part because of incorporating some read option into their offense, and they are all playoff teams despite 1st and 2nd year QBs. I'm not saying that I want a read option based offense, but a little creativity would be welcome.

An earlier response to the same nonsense...

Quote:

New England goes as Brady goes. Brady is a HOF QB. One of the best ever. Woodhead, Welker, and Branch are nothing without him. Not the other way around. This arguement can't be made. We have no Brady. There are only 2 'Brady's' in the league at this time. Weeden isn't one. Do you think for a second that Woodhead would be anything in this league if he was on our squad? We have him. Cooper. Put cooper on the Pats and see what he does. As to putting Woodhead with us.

The 49ers were a top rushing team because of Gore. They were one last year and the year before and the year before... Because of Gore. Not the read option.
The Seahags were a top rushing team because of Lynch. Not the read option.

Kelly plays 'Madden football'. Go for it on forth down, run the score up on lesser opponents. The mindless masses drool over it. The fans cheer. My argument is It's a lot of sparkle but if you ask me it's built of tinfoil, not diamonds.

Maybe Kelly is a genius but if you ask me it's for his choice of system and more so for his choice of where he's used it. If he'd had gone to the south he'd be just another Clemson coach trying to make it work. Instead he chose Oregon. Where Nike's money and marketing could help him recruit for his system in a conference that plays little defense and has only one other powerhouse program. And now he's going to parlay that into an NFL job. Genius!

I don't think of Kelly as a guy who runs one specific system and that's all he brings to the table, I look at Kelly as a guy who evaluates what he has in players, evaluates what will bring success, figures out ways to exploit matchups and adapts to his situation. I think the reason he runs the offense that he does now isn't because he's married to it, it's because it works well against most teams in college football.

If Kelly becomes our coach, I don't see him being the type to say "this is what I ran in college and I plan on running the exact same offense here." I see him as the type that will keep elements he ran that will translate (and a lot of NFL teams are using elements of it already), modify the things that won't and look for weaknesses in NFL personnel that can be exploited.

If you pigeon hole Kelly into running the exact same offense in the NFL then yeah, you probably hate him and with good reason. I just don't think that'll be the case.

Kelly is sought out by the top level coaches to learn from.

This points to what excites me most about Chip Kelly. Not only does he have a passion for learning and tries to learn from others, top minds go to learn from HIM. When you're getting your brain picked by the likes of Belichick, Gruden, Carroll, etc. it says volumes. The NFL is full of copycats and thin on innovators. Kelly is an innovator. People rave about his gameplans, strategies and even practices. Who cares if his offense doesn't exactly translate to the NFL game? He'll adapt. He'll be creative. He'll figure out new ways to win.

If Kelly succeeds, he could change the league and be the driver of that change. Imagine the Browns being a leader in offensive innovation instead of a bad follower or even worse, another guy (Shurmur) with worn and tired football concepts who refuses to adapt them to a changing game. Sure, there's a chance it doesn't work... if it doesn't, there will always be another hot coordinator or retread to scoop up in a few years. Rarely though does a guy like Chip Kelly come along. We need to take a shot.

Completely agree... this sums up my attitude pretty much perfectly.

Personally, I hate settling for mediocrity. Some fans might be perfectly content for the Browns to just be a competitive, average team who sneaks into the playoffs every few years, only to get plastered in the 1st round. That isn't contention and it isn't exciting either, at leats to me.

I really think Chip Kelly has a chance to do something special in this league and to show how foolish and close-minded some thinking that permeates the league has become.

But yeah maybe we hire him and he fails. There is a certain risk there, as there would be with any coach we hire. All the more reason to keep the defensive staff in place and keep adding to the talent there.

wasn't Tuinei 6'5"? Maehl 6'1"? DJ Davis was 6'1". I'm not advocating for Kelly, but it's not like he insists on small receivers.

As far as short running backs... MJD, Ray Rice, Darren Sproles, Alfred Morris, and Doug Martin have done alright. We've got Richardson anyways.

Well I've said my piece. You all know where I stand. I hope like hell he's on someone else's sideline next year. If not it'll free up some fishing time for me come the fall season. I'll remain a fan but I don't know that I can watch the train wreck I expect. I'm certainly not going to give up my Sundays until there is something to watch worth watching. If that comes week 8 and we're actually winning, I'll be the first to admit I was wrong and get up Sunday mornings, drive to the bar, and support my team. If it goes like I think it will go... I'll be back when we have a real plan in place.

General reply:

I have read that Kelly expects his receivers to block in the run game, and has even benched receivers for not doing so.

I don't think that he can expect smurfs to block downfield.

We happen to have a receiver who is getting more and more consistent, and who is already one of the better downfield blockers in Little.Gordon has the size to also be an effective downfield blocker. They also have great size and speed. I think that Kelly will find a way to use them in his offense.

Everything I have read about Kelly says that his entire philosophy is about finding and exploiting mismatches. That seems like a fairly sensible place to start, if you ask me.

I am coming around on Kelly the more I read about him.

Many collegiate spread teams end up deploying smaller players because the number of guys who are 6'1"+, with the same quickness and skillset, are not abundantly available.

With 100+ college programs and a small playing window (likely 3 years for elite guys), there just aren't enough of those players to go around. It is simply a numbers game. For every 6'1" 200 LB skill position player there are probably 20 that are between 5'8"-5'11" and 170-180LBS. When you're finishing in a larger pond, it doesn't make sense to constantly chase the big fish and come up short. You take some of the smaller guys to fill out your roster and get the bigger, more physical players when you can.

With that said....The notion that a guy as smart as Kelly, would intentionally draft all undersized players in the NFL, is a little silly. He'll have bigger, faster, more physical players from day one (Gordon, Little) and can fill out the roster with similar guys. Will there inevitably be a few smaller slot receivers? Sure but trying to convince everyone that we'll be watching a bunch of 150 LB munchkins, at every skill position, is laughable.

I'm neither for nor against Chip Kelly. Two weeks ago I would have struggled with answering just who he is and what he does.
Having spent some time on articles and video breakdowns of his O,I have come away impressed. Not because he's discovered the next great mousetrap,he's doing the same things hundreds of other HS and college coaches are doing. He's just doing it alot better than anybody else, and that speaks to coaching.
Is he a good head coach,I would say damned right he is.Will this O work in the pros,I don't know.
I think the more pressing question would be how much time will he get to implement it.
You don't adapt to a zone blocking scheme overnight,it takes time and the right people, other than Mack,Thomas we don't have those kinda linemen on the team.

+2

It appears that the Eagles, Bills and Browns all have interviews schedule with Chip Kelly after Fiesta Bowl. I would rank in order of attractiveness (The Roster, Location and ect)...

1.) Philadelphia
2.) Cleveland
3.) Buffalo

I think Kelly would much rather go to Philadelphia, because of McCoy, Maclin, and Jackson. They have a decent O-Line (assuming Peters is healthy) and a pretty decent defensive roster.

You add a QB to that mix (one that Kelly would be interested in) and I believe you have the makings of a roster that Kelly desires.

As for the Browns, on Offense, the only players I could see Kelly liking is our O-Line, Benjamin and Gordon. I would say Richardson is an improved version of Blount from his days at Oregon. I'm not sure where Little would fit in at. None of our QB's fit what he would desire.

Defensively, we need a little bit more of a pass rush and another corner to be a truly attractive defense. You could argue for another linebacker or safety (more so the safety).

I have no idea what we need for an offensive, other then a Coach who knows what they are doing, and I think Kelly could give this team that spark it needs and build the roster towards an ideal one while using the one we already have.

However, I think the point is moot since I believe Kelly will go to the Eagles. We'll get stuck with some consolation prize, and a new HC in 3 years.

I disagree. Phillys D is horrible. They have some well known names but the result on the field tells me our D is substantially better. Their line isn't that good either. And the eagles QB situation is no better than ours. I would think our situation is more desirable due to the youth on our roster.

If you look at the "big names" on Offense for the Eagles, they all appear to be some what young.

As for the defense not performing at a high level, that could be due to coaching, not individual talent. I still see Philadelphia as a more desirable job. The Browns IMO are a close second.

After all, the Browns are the least desirable place to come to, according to the players survey (which came out sometime this year?) We as fans are biased. Fact of the matter is, there is nothing "sexy" about Cleveland.

We will also have the ability to hire Kelly's buddy, Michael Lombardi. That's something that neither the Bills and Eagles can offer.

We have some excellent young talent, and an owner with an open checkbook, who just wants to win.

I think that we have everything a coach could want.

I'm not sold on Foles. I'm not sold on Fitzpatrick. I'm not 100% sold on Weeden. If there is no absolutely clear cut winner among the QBs, then it comes down to the rest of the picture. The Browns can offer:

A very good, young, OL
A high draft pick RB in Richardson, with excellent backups in Hardesty, Jackson, and Ogbonnaya.
Excellent, developing young receivers in Little and Gordon. A promising young speedster in Benjamin, who is also a potential start return man.

3 QBs who have shown that they have some ability to play the NFL game.

A strong and deep DL
A young LB corps, with an very good MLB.
A potential start CB in Haden, and a top 5 in the AFC S in Ward.

Overall a very young roster, with many players who have now had experience at the NFL level.

This isn't a team bereft of talent. It has been carefully built. We lack the huge star players ..... but a coach can now take a chance and try and get a boom player if that is his desire.

Combine that with an owner willing to do what it takes to win and I think that the Browns job will be very, very attractive.

Browns interviewed Whisenhunt yesterday. At least its a productive trip to Arizona - did the Rooney Rule candidate (Horton), interviewed a good, viable Plan B in Whisenhunt, and will interview a Plan A in Kelly on Friday.

Never know if we're talking with Whisenhut about a possible OC position, too, in case we get a defensive-minded HC.

So we are going to talk to coordinators first, then head coaches, then GMs?

Whisenhunt is a good coach. I am sure he came recommended to Haslam from the Rooney's and that is why is on the list.

As myself and others have stated the correlation between head coach success and good quarterback play is a one to one equation.

Whisenhunt as OC for the Steelers under Cowher won a Super Bowl with Big Ben.

Whisenhunt as a head coach went to the Super Bowl with Kurt Warner.

Then came a string of losing quarterbacks, Leinert, Anderson, Skelton, Kolb and away you go.

You give Whisenhunt the tools and he will do a good job.

Yep, does anybody think it's a coincidence that the OCs names being kicked around for head coaching gigs had Matt Ryan, Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, RGIII, etc for quarterbacks? Nobody wants Mark Sanchez's OC.. or Christian Ponders.. or Ryan Fitzpatricks?

So we are going to talk to coordinators first, then head coaches, then GMs?

Might have been only to see if Whisenhunt would be interested in a job other than that of HC.

I would prefer the Lovie Smith HC/ Norv Turner OC combo.

I think what frequently happens in situations like this, the guy gets interviewed for HC and at some point they ask him: If you don't get hired as HC would you be interested in the OC position?

IDK I really dont think that happens that often.

"Well thanks for your time we'll get back to you on being our HC. BTW if no one else wants you as HC (including us) would you be interested in having a job as our hires helper?"

They don't ask it like that.

But I seem to remember from prior years hearing comments about that happening.

Cleveland Browns have interviewed Penn State's Bill O'Brien, Syracuse's Doug Marrone, Plain Dealer has learned; Friday: Oregon's Chip Kelly | cleveland.com
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ss...t_river_default

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Browns interviewed Penn State coach Bill O'Brien for their head coach vacancy this week, a league source told The Plain Dealer today. They also interviewed Syracuse coach Doug Marrone on Thursday in Arizona,
a league source confirmed for The Plain Dealer.

Up next for the Browns is Oregon coach Chip Kelly on Friday in Arizona, the source confirmed. Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner are conducting the interviews.

The fact that Marrone's interview took place today was first reported by ESPN's Chris Mortensen. He also reported that the Browns interviewed former Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt on Thursday.

O'Brien, the Big Ten coach of the Year, led the Nittany Lions to an 8-4 record in the aftermath of the Jerry Sandusky child-sexual-abuse scandal. Previously, he was offensive coordinator of the Patriots, and helped guide them to the Super Bowl last season.

Marrone, 48, has gone 25-25 in his four seasons at Syracuse, including 8-5 this season. But the Orangemen finished the season on a 6-1 roll and defeated West Virginia, 38-14, in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl on Saturday.

Marrone has six years' NFL experience, including three as offensive coordinator with the New Orleans Saints from 2006 to 2008.

In 2008, the Saints led the NFL in total offense, with 401.6 yards per game; and in passing offense with 304.2 yards per game. In each of Marrone's three seasons as coordinator, quarterback Drew Brees passed for more than 4,000 yards.

The Eagles and Bills, who are all vying for the same candidates, are all expected to interview Marrone, O'Brien and Kelly. Marrone is close friends with O'Brien from their coaching days at Georgia Tech. Their wives were college roommates, and their families vacation together.

The Browns and Bills are both scheduled to interview Kelly on Friday, with the Eagles also talking to him either tomorrow or over the next couple of days.

First, Kelly will play in the Fiesta Bowl tonight against Kansas State. Then the mad scramble for him begins.

Kelly isn't going to interview until after his game tonight.

Yes!! O'Brien is who I have wanted more than anyone..........don't dislike Marrone either.

I am not against a college coach, but would prefer one that has been in the NFL before (BoB, Marrone, or Saban).

Kelly scares me, but he certainly wouldn't be boring........either leads us to greatness or more than likely watching an absolute train wreck..........should be fun to watch either way.

I don't like the Norv Turner thing although I'm intrigued by the Lovie Smith possibility. He could probably get the best out of the defense.
