This guy is grossly underqualified to walk into a HC job in the NFL. Just look at his resume' for yourslf.

It's really really hard to dispute that. I'm personally not overjoyed at the prospect.

I mean, if someone hired him as an OC in the NFL and he proved his system was adaptable for a year or two, then yeah, that would make me a lot more comfortable.

But here's the deal, its the Browns, I may not like it, but damn it, if they do hire him, I'm going to support him and wish him all the success he can muster.

I just want to win..

NFL Network’s Albert Breer says Kelly will have lunch with the Eagles, but has dinner scheduled with the Browns. The Bills have seemingly been reduced to a late-night Taco Bell run.

How many times have we been the late night Taco Bell run? (and come off looking like a drunken Taco Bell run at that?) Nice to see us possibly in the driver's seat.

Yup, makes it sound like he isn't certain Cleveland is where he wants to be or he would have already accepted, so its very possible we'll lose him still.

From what I understand, he regretted not going through the process last year after interviewing with Tampa Bay and then returning to Oregon. Seems he had set up some other interviews after Tampa Bay but didn't follow through on them before deciding to stay in Oregon. This time, he wants to keep his word and at least talk with them. The deal may essentially be done in Cleveland but his conscience isn't letting him do it again without fulfilling those promises to those other teams.

I think we can be reasonably assured that Buffalo isn't his destination.

I prefered that they not change, and not because I liked Shurm, but I like Juaron and Childress, and Heckert, and the roster.

What happened to Wisenhunt, since the Browns interview on the 3rd?

Of the doldrumish team outlook that a new head coach brings, Wisenhunt's background is the one I could get hope from.

We're 90% certain to get Kelly. The only way he isn't here is if some team takes our offer and effectively doubles it.

90% certain? Someone on this board likes to say that 52.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot. This sounds like one of them

Only if someone doubles our offer? Not just $2 million more a year? Not that he likes one of those other trams better because of roster or in perhaps he gets along better with the front office people? I mean who wants to work with that weasel Banner?

I just can't see how Kelly passes up the Eagles, they seem to already have the personel for him to make a quick splash in the NFL with his offensive system. Hell, Vick would even work as the QB. They can draft OL and defense and they are ready to rock-n-roll.

Cleveland, on the other hand, just doesn't seem as well suited. Not that I'm bashing our foundation, but we are more geared toward traditional NFL X's and O's.

If he comes to C-Town, Banner/Haslam must have given him the keys to the city.

Personnaly, I prefer Wisenhunt or McKoy and don't believe Kelly will pull it off at this level. Other than Ward, has any one on the current roster spoken publicly about their thoughts on Chip?

These reports all seem to contradict each other. Reports Thursday said the browns, eagles, and bills where all in Arizona to meet with Kelley on Friday. Now we get a different story. I just know that I would like to be a sports media guy. When you are right you have the vehicle to make sure that everyone knows. When you are wrong you stay quiet and most don't remember or care who got it wrong.

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Oregon coach Chip Kelly will decide his future whereabouts by Saturday night.
Expect plenty of Kelly updates on Rotoworld during tonight's Bengals-Texans and Vikings-Packers Wild Card games. Friday evening reports stated Kelly was "close" to joining the Browns, but the Philly Inquirer reports that he "promised" the Bills and Eagles interviews before the process got started. The Bills interviewed him late Friday. Eagles brass is currently flying to Arizona for its sit-down with the ballyhooed offensive mastermind. On Saturday night, Kelly will reconvene with the Browns' front office for dinner.

Sounds like he gave his word and is intent on keeping it. IF true, that is something I can respect.

It could be the fan base.

Brown's fans are rabidly loyal.

Eagles fans are just rabid.

People keep mentioning that the Eagles personnel is more suited to his scheme than ours. I would argue that the Bills personnel matches his system pretty well too.

I too like Arians but I'm coming around a little on Chip Kelly.

It has more to do with the youth movement with Kelly. Haslam & Banner said that they want a coach that will be in Cleveland for a very long time. Arians is already 60 years old and probably won't have the longevity that Tom Landry had.

Jester,

I'm just not that familiar with the Bills, all's I know is they have CJ Spiller. Not sure who the other players on their roster are that would fit in Kelly's scheme.

I know the Eagles have quite a few gamers and already need to retool the OL, and Defense so they just seem in a state that well positions them to make the change to Kelly's philosophy.

Perhaps the Bill are in a like state, I just don't know.

I don't care what you call it, you won't get me fighting for semantics here. All I know is that it's not NFL style and that this dude never coached at the NFL level in any capacity. He will learn on the fly and probably has a big enough ego to call his own plays on Offense. What's the difference between him and Shurmur again?

If J&J really have Chip and Marrone 1 and 2 on their list and even consider Lombardi for any personnel job with the Browns, we're run by dolts.

Buying high and on hype is what idiots do, Chip Kelly is all hype and his "value" at an all time high...and guess who are the dumb teams biting? Browns and Bills. I'd if it wasn't so sad. Banner all going gaga over Kelly so he wins the pissing contest with Lurie....just pathetic...this "brain trust" has LOSER written all over it

...and before you keep asking for articles: it's my opinion, and there are all kind of alarms for it, it's not my problem if you can't see them, I have my reasons....just like others being excited with Chips or Haslam and a new episode of "lowered expectations" since they'd even be "ok" with Lombardi.

Where's the "big name" HC? Where's the "experienced GM"? All I see are noobs....Cleveland Rebuilds, back to being the training ground for NFL maybes

Exactly Toad! He's been quoted as saying he builds the system around the talent he has. Of course he can recruit the guys he likes in college to run his current system but the limited pro roster will most certainly force a change there.

I've always said there's an element of Browns fans(?) who are afraid of success as it will pull them out of their miserable outlook on the Browns where they are comfortable! Not saying sun is one but they ARE out there.

Even though it's been said probably about 10,000 times by now some sports writers and posters here continue to think that he will try to cut and past his orgeon offense to the Browns/NFL. He WILL adapt the system to the talent we have here while speeding up play, ala the Patriots offense I'm expecting. Not really sure why people are saying this player doesn't fit this system or that one. If you're a good capable player in the NFL then I don't see why you couldn't be successful in a designed system. I am hoping Kelly actually gets the most out of our guys and installs a new and fast mentality, unlike Shurmur's decrepit, mid 1980's offense. God that was freaking horrible to watch. Everyone seemed to know it was awful except him and I'm not sure why. I guess that's why he's not here any longer....

Chip Kelly is the only candidate I see out there who has the potential to innovate us into a dynasty like the 1980s 49ers. The other best candidates, and I like Whisenhunt a lot, are more competent game coaches who would ideally win with talent and execution. They are safer, because Kelly also has the potential to get his butt handed to him and go scurrying back to college in three years.
It's a big risk. But I do think it is an oversimplification to dismiss Kelly as a gimmick coach who would force the Ducks' exact system on the Browns. I think he would use principles of it, but adapt it to the talent he has and the opponents he faces. He might be more of a Mike Martz type (though hopefully not personality-wise), an out-of-the-box offensive innovator who uses creativity instead of brute force to score points.
I would've been fine with Whisenhunt and a competent core of coordinators, but if we go for Chip, I'm all in. What else can we do, become Squealer fans?

What is "NFL style?"

Rats and Pats have been running up-tempo, no-huddle for years. Several teams have installed spread-option packages, including Harbaugh. Harbaugh has also installed a full-house backfield package. That isn't NFL style either.

Speaking of Harbaugh, he never coached in the NFL either. Yet Shurmur did.

Dj, I'm not going to pick this apart. I get why you don't dig the idea. I just don't know how you're going to judge Kelly when we have no idea what he'd have planned.

That is your opinion. Nobody knows if he will or won't until a year or 2 after he has been hired. That is why people are worried that he will just cut and paste his offense. He might not, but then again he just might.

He talks to Bill B regularly. I guarantee you IF Bill thought Kellys system could 100% translate to the NFL the Patriots WOULD be running it!!!

I'm sure their discourse has hit on ALL the points of his system that would, could and will not work in the league!

Tom Brady on a read-option QB draw...interesting.

Is it so far-fetched to suggest he'll bring some spread-option packages to the NFL while not totally scrapping popular NFL schemes?

You also have no idea what I "have planned" or Marrone or Whisenhunt or L.Smith...what's the point? Should I be ok with whoever we sign for HC? All we have IS track record and history to judge on and personal likes/dislikes

Of course I don't, but what I DO know is that I don't like bad odds and a prayer when putting my chips all in and that's what I see us doing with Chips. Is there ANY reason behind this pursuit other than "hype", a possible pissing contest and "faith" in his "genius"?

Everyone thinks that running this uptempo style is just something that'll instantly work. I mean look at New England and Denver, they make it work and look great doing it. Right? Stop it people!!! New England and Denver can run it because they have awesome QB play. The tempo doesn't work without them. Running a tempo like this with a QB that isn't nearly as accurate or nearly as quick at making good decisions, like about 26-28 other starting QBs in the league, means your 3 and outs last a minute and a half... Then the D is back on the field. So until we get better QB play expect our attempts at running more offensive plays per game to backfire dramatically. Actually allowing the opposing team to have the ball more.
The hurry up is predicated on great QB play... Not the other way around.

But, he did what he did with what he had and that was be pretty darn dominate.
WITHOUT a great QB as you state you must have!

If your statement was valid it wouldnt work in the PAC -10 or Pop Warner.

So even if Belicheck thought the system would 100% translate to the NFL, do you think he would simply dump Tom Brady in order to run it? He would be stupid to change systems now when his system is still working. Doesn't mean Kelly's system won't work.

And Kelly will modify his system. How much remains to be seen. He recentlly said in a press conference that if Oregon had the players to run the Power I, they would run the Power I. Now, it is obvious that Kelly prefers the read option or he would have recruited more for another system, but that doesn't mean he won't integrate other ideas into his system. In the NFL, he may be able to find a quarterback he can throw great, and run when the opening is there and other options are stopped. It is rare, but it happens. Most college read option quarterbacks get bigger passing opening because teams are so worried about the option. So players who couldn't normally play quarterback now can, ie. Denard Robinson.

Sorry but this Kelly love fest is making me sick to my stomach. People essentially acting as though suddenly we'll be scoring 45 points per game cuz the Ducks did. Or that Kelly is some genius that'll revolutionize the game. He is a genius. He's about to turn a four your stint in college into a NFL coaching career with LOTS of power. More than many longtime NFL coaches aren't afforded. Genius!

And there will be no shortage of kids coming out of colleges who can run a version of the offense as its about all there is in college.

Finding a pocket passer will be harder to find than a throw/run kid.

I've seen absolutely nobody excited and saying they cant wait to see Kelly's system here! We all know that aint happening! Rather we're all thinking about
what we will see next year.

I would say it's a great sign that Bill Bellyache consults with him on his schemes and concepts. I'd also note that if we were the only team chasing him (ala Mangini) it would be troubling. The fact that numerous teams are chasing him says he's widely viewed as a potential hit is a good sign as well.

I know of people that are excited for Kelly.

RyinCbus, Brandon Leister, Dustin Fox, Keith Britton, Albert Breer and several Browns players.

Chip Kelly's system of zone read runs are the same plays that Richardson ran at Alabama as well.

It absolutely flabbergasts me that a guy with zero NFL experience is about to be offered the keys to the franchise kingdom carte blanche. I don't care if what he has accomplished in Oregon and with what and whom and how often is translatable to what the NFL is becoming.

The devil is in the details so until he announces what he intends on doing the conjecture and speculation is like spinning tires in the mud. Still, I am just flabbergasted. It's like they are going with the flavor of the day.

Its making me slightly nervous that sometime after interviewing Kelly, the Browns released a statement how impressed they were with Marrone. If we have a Plan B, I would hope it was Whisenhunt as HC and Gamble as GM / DPP.

I should have said his system "mirrored" here. That's what is not happening.
We're anxious to see what form materializes!

I like that many of the players are excited!
