Personally, I would hold out for Kyle Shanahan. I want a guy with NFL experience and I really think Shanahan is going to be an excellent HC. He's been around the pro game a long time and has learned from one of the best.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that the Browns now consider Syracuse's Doug Marrone and Oregon's Chip Kelly to be "neck and neck" in the race to become Cleveland's next head coach. They are still the Browns, of course, but it's a "race" because new owner Jimmy Haslam is going to open up his wallet for the new coach. Cleveland's grip on top target Kelly has clearly loosened as of late Saturday, and there are rumors he's already agreed to a deal with the Eagles. While Kelly was meeting with Philly on Saturday, the Browns interviewed Marrone for a second time. Jan 5 - 10:05 PM

PFT: Kelly and Dunn using their leverage while they have it
Posted by Darin Gantt on January 5, 2013, 9:36 AM EST
Getty Images Give them credit for drawing up plays that keep the pressure on opponents.
Oregon coach Chip Kelly and his agent, David Dunn, are working the system to its fullest, in an effort to extract the best deal possible.
Word leaked out last night that Kelly was close to a deal with the Browns, which made sense because new owner Jimmy Haslam clearly wants to make a culture-changing splash, and isn’t afraid to spend a pile of money to do it.
The funny part of the immediate aftermath last night was hearing chatter that the Eagles really weren’t that interested in Kelly anyway. It was as predictable as it was lame.
Now, ESPN’s Adam Schefter’s reporting that the Eagles are flying to Arizona to meet with Kelly today, to take one last chance at getting the prettiest girl in school to go to the prom with them.
NFL Network’s Albert Breer says Kelly will have lunch with the Eagles, but has dinner scheduled with the Browns. The Bills have seemingly been reduced to a late-night Taco Bell run.
Either way, it seems close to ending, soon.
Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer says Kelly will make a decision tonight.
It’s a fast-paced process, with money and control flying around the way his Oregon teams scored points.
At the end of the night, the only sure winners are Kelly and Dunn.
Then this at 9:47 Eastern time... Long lunch: Kelly still meeting with Eagles
Posted by Darin Gantt on January 5, 2013, 9:47 PM EST
Getty Images Thanks to Joe Webb’s introduction to the forward pass, we’re counting on external means for drama tonight.
We may have found it in the person of for-now Oregon coach Chip Kelly.
The plan was for him to have a perfunctory lunch with the Eagles, then dinner with the Browns, who he was believed to be close to a deal with.
But Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported moments ago that the Browns had yet to get their chance at Kelly, since he was still meeting with the Eagles.
As we mentioned earlier, Kelly’s playing his moment of leverage to the hilt, and with every extra dessert he orders on the Eagles tab, the price tag for the Browns goes up a bit.

Kelly is smart... why not drive the price up a mill a year?
He could bring big change to the NFL or be a huge bust

I agree with a couple others. How can you sell someone on Doug Marrone, 25-25 at the college level? Has anyone watched his games at length? What is his offensive philosophy? What are his game plans like? I only saw the pinstripe bowl and I wasn't particularly impressed with anything. Does anyone watch this guy?
He did rebuild a pretty awful Syracuse program to being respectable, I think they'll spin the hire more in the direction of he has NFL coaching experience particularly as the Saints OC from 06-08.
I haven't watched Syracuse enough to have any idea of his philosophy or gameplanning.

So far Kelly has insisted on going to every meeting he has scheduled, I wonder if that pattern will continue. If so, the eagles are merely driving up the price for Kelly...or of course vice verse.
Go Browns!!

Time for damage control if they're calling Marrone and Kelly neck and neck, good grief don't insult us we know Kelly was the top target and if we miss on him we miss on him.

I don't know a whole lot about Marrone. If Haslam is looking to make a splash, hiring a guy like Marrone doesn't make much sense.

Didn't want Kelly do begin with would have supported him if he came though. The moment I heard he wanted to "go through the process" I felt he was using us. Remember Lebron wanted to go through the process too.

Im beginning to really dislike the NFC East and them giving up insane offers to beat our insane offers. I guess now people will say we didnt put our best offer on the table the 1st time again, and let someone we wanted walk.

Agreed. Man last night really got my hopes up. How lame. I mean couldn't we have kept Heckert and gotten this Marrone? I guess I just felt better about everything when things were going according to Banner's plan.
I don't think this is part of Banner's plan at all. Sure hope his backup plan is good.
I'm still holding out hope for Lovie Smith

Well we have a new owner and a new FO, but the Browns are still......Brownsing. At least it seems....lol. I was never sold on Kelly until I found out he basically turned us down. Now I'm convinced he's the next great thing...lol. It really sucks being a Cleveland sports fan and just constantly waiting for the other foot to drop.

We need Kelly. We need something new, we need an aggressive coach. I'm tired of passive coaches who don't do anything besides play conservative and lose. I want to see what Chip can do with a young roster and some say in free agency. I am curious and somewhat hopeful he can change a losing atmosphere and I guarantee Haslam will open the check book for him.

I don't know much about Marrone either, did stumble across this:
http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/eagl...head_coach.html
If Kelly is out of the picture, the Eagles will set their sights on other candidates. They have an interview scheduled with Syracuse coach Doug Marrone sometime over the next few days and have requested to meet with Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden.
The Eagles had Marrone on their radar out of the chute, as The Inquirer reported early last week. Marrone has already interviewed with the Browns and Bills and is reportedly also poised to sit down with the Bears and Chargers.
Marrone has spent the last four years in Syracuse, where he restored a moribund program to respectability. The Orange went 8-5 this season; tied for the Big East Conference title; and topped West Virginia, 38-14, in the Pinstripe Bowl.
The 48-year-old Marrone has an NFL pedigree. Aside from a brief career with the Dolphins and Saints as an offensive lineman, he was the New York Jets' offensive line coach from 2002 to '05 and then the offensive coordinator with the Saints from 2006 to '08.
In three seasons in New Orleans, Marrone helmed an offense that finished first, fourth, and first in total yards. He did not call the plays, however. Head coach Sean Payton was mostly responsible for feeding plays to quarterback Drew Brees.
Marrone left for Syracuse the year before the Saints won the Super Bowl. He is 25-25 in four years and has received credit for the development of quarterback Ryan Nassib, a product of Malvern Prep who is projected to be selected in the middle rounds of April's draft.

Haslem will pay him but at this point its not looking like he'll get the chance, the Eagles are looking to close this out before he gets a chance to come back to us.
Its a shame we couldn't close him out yesterday, I know he said he wanted to explore his options but you have to be a closer in this business to get what you want and Haslem and Banner are about to learn that lesson first hand.

Kelly would be an idiot not to use the Eagles as leverage to raise the Browns price tag for him or at least come back and say what the Eagles are offering.

I so don't want this guy.

I'll go one further and say he was gone when we let him out of the door last night without a contract. You think Laurie is going to let him ever meet with the Browns crew again...pfft. They will spin it no doubt, but this has turned into another colossal failure.
Oh I know it isn't officially over yet and Kelly hasn't officially decided, but we've all seen this for too long.....it's Cleveland.....it's over.

If you were in his shoes, wouldn't you do that too? Meet with option 2 or 3 first, 2 or 3 second and #1 last with a scheduled meeting with 2 or 3 intentionally right after?
I think this was his plan all along.

I was really hoping the Redskins would get knocked out of the playoffs last week so we could interview Shanahan sooner, but it was not to be thanks to Romo. I just hope that whoever we get he actually knows what the hell he's doing in regard to the offensive side of the ball, adapting an offense to suit our players abilities, and more.

This is turning into a disaster. Banner looks like an idiot, especially after acting all year like the man with a plan. Haslam must feel like Robert Shaw in The Sting, big rich guy finds out he's been played.
And if Marrone is our Plan B, I am not impressed. You want safe, get Lovie or Whisenhunt and give them good coordinators and good players.
Honestly, if Chip signs with Philly, I'd step back, slow things down and reassess. After all, what is the hurry at that point? to win the Doug Marrone sweepstakes?

If he was legitimately interested in us I don't think he would be skipping out on the dinner meeting with Haslem and Banner, I think he would have gotten what Philly was going to offer and come to the meeting, I don't think you push something back with someone you're soon to be an employee of.

I don't know where all this leverage talk is coming from in terms of the Browns. All Kelly has to do is ask for it and he'll get it. Haslam is loaded and wants to make a huge splash at HC. This isn't about Kelly leveraging anything to get a better deal for the Browns. This is about Kelly not wanting to join the Browns.
Generally speaking, when a candidate wants to see the process through and doesn't sign with the current suitor, that means bad things for the current suitor. When they left the table without a deal in place last night, you have to think it's a better than 50% chance that the candidate is moving on.
Banner is looking like a complete idiot in all of this. If we don't get Kelly, that means Banner and Haslam couldn't close the deal. And that means essentially Banner couldn't close the deal like he told Haslam he could. He has, after all, been "teaching" Haslam the NFL.

I said in post somewhere to I think Pitt that Kelly is smart and he wouldnt go somewhere unless he thought it was right. I was very happy to hear we had lawyers showing up to our late meeting. Now perhaps it could be so Haslam can check over the contract he signed with Lerner and how he can get away from Banner.

This makes us look like bigger losers than we already are. Whether Kelly was the answer we most likely will never know...but this time line makes me just want to smack someone:
1) Interview Kelly for 7 hours and report we're ready to meet tomorrow at dinner to sign a deal 2) Philly and Buffalo both interview 3) Philly runs over on interview and Kelly blows off dinner 4) We suddenly say Marrone and Kelly are neck and neck
I'm mostly agitated because we're always runner up, Kelly may have sucked in Cleveland but we didn't get our target

They are already spinning it that Kelly and Marrone are "actually neck and neck".
What a disaster. I'm not sure what my feelings on Kelly are, but this is utter failure from J&J.
Failure and Cleveland are basically the same word in the English language.

As someone just responded to me a few posts up, this sounds dead on to me.
That's ok. Banner can blame Heckert. I'm sure that's why Kelly isn't coming here because Heckert drafted Weeden and Philly has more talent.
But I think it's kind of funny the smoke J&J were blowing up everyone's arse right after the firings ... "people will want to come here because they will be a God in this town if they win ... and these are the best fans ... " ... they made it sound like it was going to be so easy.
Welcome to the NFL, Jimbo. I hope you enjoy the ride with Banner.
