I understand that as well. I just don't know if you send out contacts in order.....you contact guys from a list of candidates and go from there.

I'd say this is normally true. But I believe that Saban was such an obvious #1 choice for Haslam that he was contacted at least a month ago. Probably even earlier than that. Hell, rumors say that the Browns contacted Kelly at least a month ago. Which could lead to a whole different set of questions about Kelly and our FO....

Any word on Chip's family ... Does he have a wife or kids? Not saying that they would influence him but they may be back in Oregon and he may need time to consult with them.

ESPN reports that Haslam was also impressed by Whisenhunt.

I like him too. Keep Jauron and find a good OC and we will be fine if Kelly chooses PHI.

Whisenhunt took a team as bad or worse than us within an organization as bad or worse than ours and led them to a SB. They're still a good squad looking for a QB.

Im getting a feeling hes going to stay at Oregon. If the Eagles are the precieved front runners now and they are requesting interviews with playoff teams and the Browns are now saying Wisenhurt (SP) impressed them I feel both teams may be ready to move on.

Kelly will make a choice today because the Groom wont wait at the alter much longer.Im guessing news will come down between the 2 playoff games.

I think Russ Grimm is Whisenhunt's OC, and also that the entire offensive staff was let go by Arizona. I'd be happy with Whisenhunt along with Jauron's D. Then go get Gamble or Pioli as GM or DPP.

Also heard an interesting scenario on 'KNR yesterday - they're reporting that the Browns were concerned enough about fallout over Mike Lombardi that they are considering pairing him up (as GM) with Bernie Kosar as DPP or Director of Scouting. Ironic because Kosar was one of the people Lombardi stabbed in the back in his first go-round here.

Here's the thing that worries me ........

The Cardinals have been looking for a QB ...... and pretty much every guy they have had has looked like crap. They took a "pure" WCO QB in Kevin Kolb and tried to fit him into a downfield passing offense. He brought in these other scrub QBs, and tried to work with them .... but they looked like crap.

As bad as Shurmur was, his QBs looked better than that ...... even when we got down to Lewis. He runs a downfield passing offense, yet his QBs averaged (per attempt) 6.39, 5.63, 4.40, and 6.23.

Since Warner retired, Arizona has scored 289, 312, and 250 points. He had Wells, who played well last year turn into an afterthought to a guy averaging 3.2 yards/carry, and then who became an outspoken critic of the coach and team.

I'm really trying to figure out what his offense, and/or he did well.

I'd take Grimm too!
Their problem was the same as ours...crappy QB play. Before Warner retired they
were a potent offense!
I'd take Lovie Smith as my DC should Jauron move on. Or Rod Marinelli.

Lombardi said on the NFL Network that Kelly is seriously considering staying at Oregon.

Lombardi knows Kelly so I'm guessing that's who fed him that tidbit.

Anybody wanna bet that Kelly is getting a big "bonus" for winning the bowl game and now he just can't bear to leave his "kids".

How's it feel to get played, Mr. Haslam?

If they're concerned over Lombardi fallout how bout they DON'T HIRE HIM? Thats in response to Dave's post...

At this point I would LOVE to see Haslam tell Kelly to shove it. Even if we land him we're going to look like suckers.

I dont know the GM/HC arrangement down there in AZ.

Did KW do what he could with what was given him? Was it him? Grimm? Or Bidwell who have been bad owners for years? Well, Bill Bidwell was, not sure about his son so much.

I wouldn't want a guy who isn't all in on the job I have to offer.

Kelly checked the Browns out, then wanted to also check out the other teams who were interested in him. I don't blame him. I wouldn't want a guy who was just happy to get an NFL interview, and who jumped at the first position to be offered to him.

I want a guy to look around a little bit, and decide what he feels is the best fit. I don't want a guy who looks for a paycheck as opposed to a place he can win.

Further, is it any surprise that Kelly would have marathon interviews when he is a football junkie, who loves to talk football and pick peoples' brains?

All that said,I still hope that we interview Arians. For all that people complained about him, we had our 2nd best scoring year under his guidance ......... with Tim Couch and Kelly Holcomb at QB. (behind only 2007) Think about that for a minute.

If the reports by yahoo are true about the Browns FO flying back this morning w/o an answer from Kelly, they may have done just that. Even if they land him at this point, they looked like they were completely played. Just like the Browns always do.

He should at least set another deadline and say that he's going to decide by that time. It's getting pretty rude to leave large organizations in the waiting. I understand he is weighing his options, but at least give a time table.

Why would they look like they were played?

No company gets every person they want to hire. None. These are high profile jobs. Last year Kelly all but accepted the Bucs job before backing out. Why would we look bad if he takes a different job, or even stays where he's at?

I don't see it as them being played. I see it as once again the media over hyped a story. I never once hears a report from the Browns saying THEY were close to signing Kelly. As far as Kelly goes, he interviewed with whom he promised to interview.

Not how they wanted this to play out for sure. Reports will soon come out on our next round of targets fast enough. Wonder if we try to bump heads so to speak with the Eagles again?

We don't know that he hasn't given them a time line. It hasn't been reported, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been given.

And for those who are saying that the Browns FO has been "played" or made to look silly, you guys are out of control. lol. I'm not sure how many of you have interviewed for a large position in a large company before. I have. And there are a lot of things to go over and the money is only one aspect. Organizational control, functionality, facilities, staff, and so very much more. When I was interviewing for the position I had offers from 3 very different companies, I spoke with all of them at length. 2 of them had me moving a great distance.

I didn't "play" with any of them. They didn't look stupid because 2 of them didn't get me. They were all great offers but ultimately I took the one that fit my style and needs at the time. It was a great experience for me and I am glad I did it.

I get it that this is a high profile hire, but get a grip. He is one guy, if the Browns/Eagles/whoever want him, they will make an offer and he will either accept or decline. Mostly for reasons that will NEVER be made public.

One other thing ...... I doubt that there are going to be any real official type announcements until after the games today. The Browns or Eagles could have already agreed in principle on a deal ....... but if the circle is really closed, and no one can get information ... then how would anyone know? The media would be clueless. Hell, Haslam and Banner (or the Eagles) could have agreed by phone on the framework of a deal, and we'd never know. If the Browns, for example, had just 2 or 3 lawyers working on their side, and they told the lawyers that if anything leaks, none of them will ever work for the team ever again, then where would a leak come from?

I suspect that there will be some kind of unofficial story after the 4:30 game ends.

Look at this from Kelly's point. Could it be that he just spent an incredible amount of time preparing for a major bowl game (one in which he new the outcome would determine the number of zeros in his contract). Then the very next day conduct 3 job interviews....spending 7 hours on just one of them. Then the very next day spend 9 hours on another interview. This entire time he's feeling the media stress and pressure to make a decision that will determine the course of his career.

Two frickin' days after the bowl game and he wants to take a breath before making an informed, life altering decision? I see nothing wrong or deceitful about that.

It has to do with the perception of how this all went down then it does with Kelly. IMO, the Browns got tired of the circus, as they should be, and moved on. But their inability to at least try to control how the story was unfolding (How on earth did they NOT have a beat writer down there in AZ) has made them look bad, imo.

The perception is that we are now looking to (at least) our plan D, and that once again we are settling for something other then what we wanted.

Now we're moving onto a coach who didn't win anything without a qb that he tried like hell not to play (Warner). Woo. Hoo.

At this point, I think you have to re-config your list.

The past 24 hours have been unkind to the Cleveland Browns.

NFL head coach tracker
The Andy Reid era could be ending in Philadelphia. Which other coaches could lose their jobs in the days ahead? More ...
With Chip Kelly being courted heavily Saturday by the Philadelphia Eagles and Syracuse's Doug Marrone accepting a job with the Buffalo Bills early Sunday, the Browns face the possibility of losing out on their first and second choice for head coach.

Kelly's fate is expected to become known Sunday. His decision is anyone's guess after a marathon session with the Eagles, who turned a lunchtime meeting with Kelly into an all-day affair that dug deep into the evening and wiped out a planned second get-together with the Browns. For Cleveland, it must have felt like watching your best girl zoom off in a car with another guy. All the old doubts creep in.

Cleveland's presumed Plan B, Marrone, became Buffalo's Plan A, leaving Browns owner Jimmy Haslam III and his hand-picked CEO, Joe Banner, in an awkward position. If Kelly opts for the Eagles or -- as some have speculated -- a return to Oregon, the Browns will be forced to publicly reboot the machine.

Kelly has masterfully worked the system and upped his value considerably by playing the field. The Browns have plenty of money to offer and reorganized their front office to allow for the incoming coach to hold considerable sway over the roster. Money and power are attractive to Kelly, but the Browns aren't the only team offering those commodities.

Browns fans have seen the team blown up time and again. Each new regime promises something the past couldn't deliver. Each new regime has failed to keep its word. From that angle, the past 24 hours feel awfully familiar to anyone who's followed this franchise through its gloomy rebirth.

It's Chip Kelly-or-bust for the Cleveland Browns.

Link

Just saw on ESPN scroller the Browns are no longer pursuing Kelly.

Let me get this right,, Kelly meets with the Browns on Friday for 7 hours and agrees to meet for Dinner on Saturday. Then Kelly spends some time with Buffalo Friday Evening, Agrees to lunch with the Eagles on Saturday that ends up running 9 hours which doesn't allow him to keep his committment to the Browns to have dinner Saturday evening and now the eagles are asking to talk to other candidates?

Do I have that right?

OK,, sounds to me that after 9 hours of talk, the Eagles didn't get any further than the Browns did and Buffalo said, hell with you Mr Kelly, we're taking someone else.

I've got the feeling that Kelly is going to remain a Duck and both the Eagles and Browns are gonna go another direction.

Please fellas, let's at least talk to Arians..

Not feeling very approving of the moral character of Chip Kelly. If his intention all along was to stay at Oregon, he just jerked around several organizations.

Might be the best thing for the Browns and Eagles that they didn't land him. Same goes for the Bucs last year, and whatever organizations he jerks around next year.

I don't think Haslam is going to look at it that way. You might, and fans and some in the media might, and those in the media that think so might report it that way. In the end though, I think that hurt's Chip Kelly's credibility more than anything. It looks like he's afraid to take that next step and that if he ever tries to get such a job in the NFL later, he'll get no takers. I don't think that NFL teams will be calling for his services anytime soon if he doesn't take one of the NFL jobs now.

And with the amount of weight that both Haslam and Lurie can carry in NFL circles, he's likely to be blacklisted by default. Not that they'll criticize him by name, but that NFL owners looking for head coach candidates won't look to offer him a job by the reputation that he'll have built for himself.
