Happened to my parents... they didn't think it was funny when my 19 y/o sister had to drive them to take their test (my mom almost failed )

I almost let mine expire here in Texas - got it renewed one day before it expired (really about 14 hours before it did)

My tags were expired over six months once and I was lucky that the officer who stopped me was nice enough not to impound my car and let me walk to my destination in the rain. I ended up having to go to court and paying fines and court costs. I hope I never forget my license but I'm always worried I will.

Exact same thing happened to me about 3 years ago!! I went to renew and they said my license had expired!! I had been driving for 20 years and then I had to go and do it all over again.....the temp test was all computerized, when I took it the first time it was paper and pencil. You can bet now that keep track of the renewal date!!

Ya sound like me there Lama! I went to trade in my car and they were just going to transfer my tags. I gave the dealership my registration to do the paperwork and the guy told me, no, i need your current registration, this is from last year. So I told him I would look for the registration at home and bring it in. So they went to put the plates on my car...sure enough, the wrong sticker. I had forgotten to renew my tags. My birthday is in the beginning of January, I traded my car in at the end of June. I had to pay for all new license plates instead of trying to renew the ones that were on my car and paying fines and penalties. If you think about it, I actually saved myself some money. Hubby didn't find it too amusing tho!

I let my plates expire once and got pulled over, had to go before the Judge.

He admonished me and then pointed out with as much dry sarcasm as he could muster that there was this little thing to remind me every year called My Birthday.

I haven't forgotten since

Once when I was younger I was driving me and my wifes truck(we only had one vehicle) and the tags were about 7 days expired. I was broke and had to wait till payday to get the new tags and got pulled over in a eastern suburb of Cleveland at 2 in the morning. I told the officer this is my wifes truck I didnt realize she hadnt renewed the tags and daid she is such a dumbass. The cop went back to his cruiser and came back a few minutes later and said he had checked the registration and saw it came back to my wifes name. he let me go and said he understands because he has one of those at home too.

I would be surprised if any cop did anything besides issue a warning if it's that much expired.. I had a cop issue me a warning when my registration was 9 months expired.. *chuckle* I quickly paid my registration the next day though..

I'm going to be pushing it this time. My license and plates all expire right around the time I'll be closing on my new house. I want to wait till everything's done so I have my new address on everything.

That is a good heads up!

I think that if were to ask the average Joe when their driver's license expired they would not know!

I am checking mine now!

I do not live in Ohio...........but I have a feeling the fine is stiff in many if not all states!

Thanks!

Does the BMV require proof of residence if you change your address on a driver's license?

I'm not sure, but I can always take my paperwork with me as proof.

No they don't. Mine expired last July and I just wrote the new one on the paper and was done. When I was down in Akron my license expired 3 weeks before I was to move back up here and I got both my plates and license changed to reflect the new address, no proof what so ever required.

Once I couldn't pass e-check so I went to Carroll County and said I lived at my roomates address b/c I was in college and didn't have the cash to fix my POS

You would think when you renewed your tags they would tell you your license expired.

You were real lucky because after six months they're supposed to confiscate the vehicle and require you to go to court.

When I lived in Europe my driver's license expired and when I got back they didn't make me redo everything because I was out of country because of the military.

ditto, kinda.
My expired plates were out of state as I had just gotten out of the Navy and moved back home a couple months before so the judge ended up tossing it out and making me pay only court costs... but it still sucked

Here's my question, when's the earliest that you can get your new license?

I say this cuz I'll be home on winter break next December until New Year, then it's back to Athens, my birthday will pass through that, which is when my license expires.

The catch? I switch from the vertical 16 license to the horizontal 21 license...how soon can I get the 21 license even if I'm not 21?

Sorry if that makes NO sense.

that sort of thing you can only get when you turn 21...because you're not 21 until then

Right... so be there on your birthday. If you go before then, it won't expire for another 4 years, but it'll still be the under-21 style.

That or don't drive after your birthday until you get the new one

Somehow I think there's ways around it.

The logistics of peoples licenses expiring and having to take the tests all over again would be unreal.

1. If you aren't past the expiration by much, you don't have to retake it. I don't know exact timeframes, but that info is a phone call away for ya.

2. You can renew at any time. Just go get a new one, they question ya, tell em you lost your old one... The expiration on the new one will be on your birthday four years from the date you renew. You just won't get one reflecting that you are 21 or older until you are at least actually 21.

3. There is a way around it.. wait until you're 21 and I'll tell ya.

Exactly. You should be able to renew a license in any county...unlike getting plates or tags.

AMMO maybe you should call the DMV and ask. I know once your over 21 you can renew your liscense BEFORE it expires. My birthday falls at the end of the month, but I can renew it on the 1st day of that month. Just make a quick phone call and you will know for sure.
