Meaning basically a really small laptop? yeah, some, don't much care for them. What problem are you having? The hot setup with those is to change to an SSD.
Did you really plug in the drive with power on, or did you just word it wrong? Naughty, naughty, naughty. That's a good way to activate the smoke chips.
Unlikely to get a real short, but cause a reboot or data problem, much more so.

Yeah I connected the cables to the drive. The thing isn't working anyway but I obviously won't do it again if you shouldn't.
I asked about ultrabooks since I've been thinking of getting a laptop. I looked yesterday and the 13.3 screen seems way too small.
Any suggestions?

No specific brand or model, but basically, if you can't work with it, don't buy it.
Do you need portability? Desktops much better for reliability, cost-effectiveness, and from a repair standpoint. But, they ain't portable.
Bigger screen is always better, but usually heavier. It's a compromise.

If you don't need a laptop for work, desktop and tablet is the way to go in my opinion.

I'd like a tablet ...... but I don't know what I would use it for. I'd like to have one to mess around with ..... but can't justify spending money on something for that reason.

I don't need one for work, but I will take it places, as well as around the apartment.
I'd go tablet, but I need something more to handle my music and movies. These tablets are nice, but they still aren't very big for storage space.
As far as what I'm looking for...
I went into Microcenter and messed around with the ultrabooks, just about all them are 13.3" screens which is a little small for my liking. I think the 15" is perfect.
I don't want a bowling ball either, the lighter, the better. I don't necessarily need a disc drive, which is why an ultrabook was something I was interested in.
I really like the look and feel of HP's. . Everyone I talk to said I should get something with at least 6GB memory.
I want something powerful, but I don't need a beast, because I only game on consoles.
I love the blue tooth technology, since we have a nice speaker setup at home, but it seems like they all come with that these days so that's not an issue when choosing.

4 GB would be plenty since you're not gaming on it.
I wouldn't recommend gaming on a laptop anyway since they run so hot.

Best Buy is offereing an HP Envy M6 for 680. 8gb memory, 750GB space, i5 processor
Normally I shrug off what Best Buy offers because I can always find better, but this seems really good. Can't really compare prices because it's an exclusive.

That sounds like a bit more of a hot-rod than what you were looking for, but the price ain't bad.
One thing to consider in a laptop, a faster processor uses more power, runs hotter, and because of the heat is likely to have a shorter lifetime.
An I3 with 4gb of RAM would likely last longer, have more battery life, never notice the difference in most apps, and around $200 cheaper.
If you do not already have a good-quality carrying case, GET ONE. The ones with rigid sides are the best. Ever whack your hip on the corner of a desk? Thats where the laptop bag usually rides. Replacing broken screens usually $200 and higher.

I went and messed around on it yesterday. It's really nice but I wasn't blown away by it. Didn't stick out to me like I had to have it.
I really really like those Sony Vaio T series ones, they're thin, very lightweight, powerful, I love Sony Products. I just don't want any part of a touchscreen and I think they don't make those in normal screen.
I think I am going to buy from Microcenter though, as a lot of the time they will give you both OS's. Some of these laptops come with W7 installed, and they give you a complimentary W8 disc if you want to upgrade. They actually did that for me with my current desktop with XP/Vista.
I don't know what to make of W8, it seems kind of hokey. I work on 7 at my job and I love it.
I was messing around on some Samsung laptop that I fell in love with, too bad that thing was 1200$.

I've played a little with W8, and agree, it's quite an adjustment from the current thinking of interaction. It is definitely designed around a touch-screen interface.
I can see the advantage to someone running a W8 desktop, tablet and phone. They could all be synced, all operate with the same interface and layout. Much like people do with the iCloud and their iPhone and iPad synced.
One thing that interested me about the Surface Tablet was that has a version that is basially a full O/S in a tablet, allowing installation of regular program, but reviews I read reported it was too weak to run the large OS needed for such an installation, and performance lagged in such conditions.
We don't have to agree with each other, to respect each others opinion.

I haven't used 8 yet but from the looks of it and what I've read it seems like it was made more for smartphones and tablets than the pc.
They did away with the start menu which I use a ton so I'm staying with 7.

That was the killer for me too. We all kind of bank on using that start screen to get us everywhere on our system.

Win8 is basically Win7 with the TS interface added on. You can still go back to pretty much a Win7 interface. It is Definitely designed to be a one-size-fits-all OS. Bad idea in my opinion, but then Bill never has responded to my complaints.
Sounds like a good store you are dealing with.
As much as possible, feel the KB and try the touchpad. Put the screen at different angles, in light and shade. It's a tool you should feel comfortable with.
Something else to watch in a large store. Often, they will have a new model introduced, replacing the older one. The older one is usually heavily slashed in price to get them out of inventory. Find one or several you like, watch company sites for new model introduction. Watch the store shelves for one that disappears, they may prepare to ship them back, and will heavily discount.
Or, just get the Sony. They are still usually fairly well made.
Looking at the expensive stuff can tell what extra features you may be interested in, however it will also tell you which ones you can't afford. Once you purchase, don't look at anything else for at least a year or two, you'll just get depressed.

lol, I will keep that in mind. I don't have to hurry with a purchase, because I was able to fix my current setup.
I'm going on a week long vacation to NC in June. I'd like to have something by then, so I have time to wait for the right deal.
And yes, Microcenter is awesome. They don't have that many stores nation wide, but I have always been within 20 minutes of one (Mayfield Heights when I lived in Cleveland). I find that their employees are the most knowledgeable of the ones I have dealt with. Their comptuer packages always seem to give you more bang for the buck, as well as giving you options with OS as I mentioned before.
They don't really do any rewards programs like Best Buy or some of the other retail giants, but I'll trade that in for people who know what they're talking about and aren't just trying to siphon a sale out of you.

I try to stick to the "every other version of Windows sucks" rule. Meaning that 7 was good, so 8 will suck. I'll get 9 or whatever comes after 8.

Agreed, and their prices compare very well to New Egg and Tiger Direct.
It's been my one stop shop for parts since 2002.
