Thought we should have a thread on these guys who will also be pretty darn important. No great surprise here...... Norv Turner may return to familiar offensive coordinator position with Cleveland Browns under Rob Chudzinski | cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ss...art_maj-story-1BEREA, Ohio -- Norv Turner may be returning to the position many believe he’s best suited. The Browns are expected to name Turner as their new offensive coordinator just over a week after he was fired as head coach of the San Diego Chargers. Turner has managed just a 114-122-1 record in 15 seasons as a head coach for Washington, Oakland and San Diego. His teams made four playoff appearances in that span. New Browns coach Rob Chudzinski is quite familiar with Turner having worked under him with the Chargers in 2009-10. The 60-year-old Turner made a name for himself as an offensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys from 1991-92. He was part of two Super-Bowl winning teams that featured future Pro Football Hall of Famers Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith and Michael Irvin. He parlayed that success into his first head coaching job with the Redskins in 1994. After being fired by Washington in 2000, Turner returned to offensive coordinator duties with San Diego. He’s also served in the same capacity for Miami (2002-03) and San Francisco (2006).

It is very unlikely, but my ideal situation would be for the Cardinals to hire a head coach who want a 4-3 defense. That would make Ray Horton expendable. Ray Horton comes here.
Like I said, unlikely. I see the Cardinals eventually hiring Horton as their head coach.

Just posted in the Chud thread how I think Kevin Greene might be a good candidate for a DC position - should we move to the 3/4. The guy was a dominant pass rusher for 12+ years and has done a super job with Green Bay's linebackers over the last 4 seasons. I don't know if the 4 yrs experience would be a detriment, but he definitely fits the attacking mode that Chud mentioned.
In addition, the guy has played and coached under Dom Capers, so he must have absorbed something over the years.

Just watching the names SHOULD be an indicator of our potential scheme. Chud said the DC will be most influential in that decision.
Rod Marinelli is out there. Ryan (no) Was Spagnulo a D or O guy?

It wouldn't break my heart if we looked at Mangini for DC if we're switching to the 3-4…

I would want a more experienced coordinator because we have a first time head coach.

I considered that too, but would feel better about it if Norv comes in. I guess the drawback is that Norv is from the offensive side of the ball, so the inexperience would all be on the D.

I would be very happy with Marineli or Tucker. Either guy would then give us 2 very, very strong coordinators. (along with Turner as OC)
I just hope we get rid of the special teams coordinator from last year. He flat our sucked ..... and sucked to the point that I'm not even going to go look up his name. (I tried to block him out of my memory)

I wonder if any of our current assistants have a chance to stick?
I would like to see Dwayne Board be retained if we stay with the 4-3. I think that he did a nice job with the DL.
Mark Whipple is a pretty well respected QB coach, and he worked with Roethlisberger at the start of his career. He should be well acquainted with an attacking, down field passing offense.
I would kind of like to see Cromwell retained. I think that he did a great job working with the receivers, and really helped the youngsters really develop.
I wonder if George Warhop might have a chance as OL coach to stay with the team?
I would think that these 4 would probably have the best chance of sticking.

I thought Tabor (the special teams guy) was much better this year than last year. The Benjamin punt return was pretty good.
Tucker would be an okay hire. In 2011 the Jaguars had the 6th best defense (by yardage) and the 32nd offense. That is hard to do. He also has the obvious connection to Chud.

Isn't Mike Wilson the wide receiver coach? Also, I think George Warhop has a good shot at staying as Haslam, Banner, and Chud all talked up the O-Line.

it's a funny thought that if Chud wants to go 4-3 he could hire Butch for DC and if he wants to go 3-4 he could hire Romeo for DC since he worked for both my personal choice would be Horton for 3-4 DC and Tucker for 4-3 DC

Mike Wilson is the WR coach, but Cromwell worked specifically with Gordon and Benjamin, getting them up to speed with the NFL game. He was more of a 1 on 1 type coach.
It would not surprise me if he also sat down with Little at some point. That's just a guess on my part, but he is a very well respected coach, both with other coaches and with players.

So as far as 3-4 goes it would seem Romeo Crennels version would not fit didn't he kinda have the bend don't break philosophy? That does scream attacking D to me. Rob Ryan at least fits the philosophy and Mel tuckers Ds have been described as "attacking". As of now I am hoping for Mel Tucker.

He was with the Steelers in the mid-90's. I know that when he was with the Bills he was one of the most respected coaches in the league and has even got a few head coaching interviews.

He was always the best SPT coach in Madden.
Him and John Harbaugh ran my SPTs for many a video game years.

Mel Tucker runs a very similar 4-3 to what Jauron runs. He probably blitzes even less but he turns that front 4 loose to get to the QB. The back end is pretty much a Romeo zone.

Looks like it is a 3-4 for us ........ Cleveland Browns' Rob Chudzinski targeting Chargers' John Pagano as his defensive coordinator, source confirms | cleveland.com http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ss...t_river_defaultCLEVELAND -- Browns new head coach Rob Chudzinski is targeting Chargers defensive coordinator John Pagano to run his defense here, a source confirmed for the Plain Dealer. Pagano, who runs a 3-4 scheme, led the Chargers to a No. 9 ranking on defense this season. ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported this morning that Pagano was on Chud's radar. He said the Chiefs also have expressed interest, but the Chargers wouldn't let him out of his deal yet. In addition, fired Chargers head coach Norv Turner will be named Browns offensive coordinator when he returns from a vacation in Hawaii with his family, a source told the Plain Dealer. Chudzinski worked with Turner and Pagano during his two stints in San Diego, in 2005-06 as tight ends coach and 2009-10 as assistant head coach/tight ends. Pagano's brother, Chuck, is head coach of the Colts and a former Browns assistant. The longest-tenured assistant on the Chargers’ coaching staff, Pagano was promoted to defensive coordinator in 2012. He led the Chargers to a No. 9 ranking in total defense, including No. 6 against the run. The Chargers finished 16th in the NFL in points allowed. He first joined the Chargers as a defensive quality control coach in 2002, after serving as a defensive assistant with the Saints and Colts. From 2008-11, he coached the Chargers linebackers and helped mold Shaun Phillips into a star player. In 2010, Pagano helped coach the Chargers to a No. 1 overall ranking in total defense as the Bolts ranked second in the league in sacks and fourth in run defense. Besides Phillips, Pagano also worked closely with Shawne Merriman, who led the NFL in sacks in 2006, was selected to play in three Pro Bowls and won the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Year Award in 2005. Chudzinski said his decision to run a 3-4, a 4-3, or hybrid defense would be dictated by the coordinator he hires. Pagano would replace Dick Jauron, who runs a 4-3 scheme. Chudzinski promised to run an attack-style defense regardless of the front. The Browns are expected to move toward a 3-4 base alignment, which would require some changes in personnel.

John Pagano I have mentioned Pagano a few times just because of his ties with Norv. I'm guessing it goes like this Pagano > Tucker > Jauron.

So basically were waiting to see who SD hires as HC and if they keep Pagano.
I'm over the switch. Because by Haslems words, were sticking with Chud. So he won't have to worry about the defense while its in transition costing him his job.
Plus we HAVE talent. So it's not like well be fielding any Eric Barton's.
I like Pagano, especially if he can bring Phillips with him.

My money's on Junior Seau... Too soon? I like the way the staff is shaping up to be. If we end up nabbing either Moore/Jones/Mingo for one of our OLB spots, and fill the other side with Spencer/Phillips, I'm feeling a lot better about our transition to a different scheme.

I agree with this 100%!
If there were someone on the opposite side of Sheard opposing D's couldn't key on him as much. After recording eight and a half sacks as a rookie, he still recorde seven this year with him being keyed on.
If we lined up yet another quality pass rusher on the other side, we would be in very good shape.
I do have a feeling we'll be looking for a LB'er with more speed as well though....
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Raise your hand if you think Jabaal Sheard can cover receivers in space from the 34 OLB spot?
Any takers? Didn't think so.
He becomes an edge pass rush specialist only and possibly off the team. Phil Taylor will be doomed in a 34 as well. He's NOT a 34 NT nor is he a 2-gap 34 DE. Time to throw away ANOTHER 1st round pick. Rubin and Winn (and possibly Hughes in a backup role) are the only DLine that survive the switch IMO.
As for LB? Ugh. Gocong can make the transition but who knows if he can get healthy. DQ goes from All-Pro to avg at best and very replaceable. JMJ could make the transition. I don't think anybody else survives unless it's out of desperation b/c we can't flip the entire defense in 1 off-season.
Don't mind the fact that our CB position was in dire straights BEFORE we decided to change the D. We have Haden....and Skrine and Wade who are nothing more than a #4 and #5, and that's IT! We need TWO new CB (I expect Brown either gone or if we re-sign him then he'll be moved to FS). Speaking of FS we need one of those too. So it's not like the secondary will come out of this thing unscathed.
By my count this makes our D needs : 1 starting DE, 2 backup DE, 2 starting OLB, 1 backup ILB, 2 backup OLB, 2 CB, 1 FS.
Hey only 11 spots to fill. Don't forget it's EXPONENTIALLY easier to draft for a 43 since that's the scheme most players play in college. It takes a lot of talent evaluation and being right on "projectability" to assemble a top flight 34 defense. Though, I'll admit, IF you can (that's a big IF) then it's a superior defense to the 43 due to it's flexibility and ability to disguise things. How much faith do we have in our new FO and "insert unknown GM here" in being able to do this? IMO our new D will be RIGHT up to speed about....2015. Right about the time to fire Chud for our next "regime change".
I was on board with hiring Chud. I like the guy, but this is a HUGE mistake IMO and WILL set us back 2-3 years on that side of the ball. Better hope Weeden and our offense take HUGE steps forward and become the next NE Patriots / NO Saints and just out-score people for a couple years or his initial record could look pretty ugly.

I think you are a little too worried. We aren't that far in the hole.
If it works out Taylor is everything you say he isn't, I am pretty sure we could trade him for a nice pick.
Let's see how it works out before we start getting all depressed....I mean we did finish last in our division and only 5 teams did worse than we did last year, so it isn't like we were that good..
Just saying.....
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn. GM Strong
