Yeah, I'd be very happy with Horton. (Plus, he would want to show people that they made a mistake not hiring him, so he'd be very driven to making our defense a force)

Don't forget, we passed on Horton as HC also.. so who knows if he's holding a grudge? I mean, probably not, but you just never know

Hopefully he channels it into proving that people made a mistake... the guy is going to get a shot as a HC somewhere eventually... so doing something stupid doesn't benefit him in any way... take the best DC job available that lets you hit the ground running without a major rebuild and go with it... I think the Browns stack up pretty favorably if he looks at it that way.

Cleveland Browns strong frontrunner for defensive coordinator is Cardinals' Ray Horton, source confirms | cleveland.com
http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2013/01/cleveland_browns_strong_frontr.html

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cardinal defensive coordinator Ray Horton, who interviewed for the Browns' head coaching vacancy, is now the frontrunner for the Browns defensive coordinator post, a league source confirmed.

Horton's climb to the top of the Browns' list was first reported Thursday by CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora.

Horton became available when Bruce Arians was name Cardinals head coach, a move that angered Horton, according to multiple reports.

Horton, who has 19 years' experience as an NFL assistant, interviewed twice with the Cardinals for their head job and was reportedly miffed they chose Arians over him.

He got into "a heated exchange'' with new general manager Steve Keim over the move, according to Mike Jurecki of XTRA 910. Arians reportedly wants to hire former Browns assistant Todd Bowles as his defensive coordinator.

Browns owner Jimmy Haslam is familiar with Horton from their days together with the Steelers, when Haslam was part owner and Horton was a Steelers defensive assistant under Dick LeBeau, including 2007 through 2010 as defensive backs coach.

Horton, who runs a 3-4 defense, described his interview with the Browns as "fantastic.'' He also predicted he'd be a head coach in the NFL this season. The Browns were also set to interview former Buccaneers coach Raheem Morris, currently the Redskins' defensive backs coach, for the post.

Yes, I'm sure the minority owner and the secondary coach probably went to lunch regularly.

Not really. We'll be re-building quite a bit of the front seven.

Our defensive line will be fine Taylor, Rubin, Winn, Hughes, and Rucker can all play in the 3-4. We probably needed one or two linebackers as it is.

I think that Wynn/Rubin/Taylor might be able to work in the 3-4. (especially a version that has the DL attack the LOS, rather than merely hold position)

LB is a disaster as far as transitioning to the 3-4. INside we'll probably have DQ and JMJ ...... but we have no one to play OLB at all. I have to wonder if Sheard can transition to that spot or not. I don't know if he can.

The secondary is the same no matter which defense we play.

Maybe we'll be OK in year 1 with a strong FA period and a strong draft.

Rubin, yes. Taylor, maybe at NT. Maybe. Winn at DE. Maybe. Hughes and Rucker. No. We'll need at least two DEs (probably 3). We'll need two OLBs. Minimum. Gocong (if he's OK) can play ILB. DQ is simply ill-suited to the 3-4, but he'll probably stick at the other ILB. We'll need more depth at both ILB and OLB.

We'll be rebuilding for sure.

The thing is we will probably be runnign some form of a hybrid D. I have been looking at rosters from alot of teams and noticed many are doing this. I think Taylor will be able to play some 3-4 DE and Hughes will be able to provide depth at DT. I think if Jackson is surrounded by better players than he was when we where running the 3-4 previously he may bew O.K. Who else did we have at LB and DL with Mangini and Crennel, I don't remember. Definately think we need another OLB( draft) and another DE( probably in FA).

i think Sheard is a 4-3 guy, but we have plenty of DL for the 3-4 and the rest can play there (except Parker).

at LBer, Gocong and DQ are likely ILB. Robertson a nickel LBer (so is Fort but we only need one). JMJ (if he improves) can be a backup ILB pretty readily. Maiava already failed to make an impact in the 3-4.

okay, so we need 4 OLBers (starters and backups). Go hard after Spencer and Philips and inquire AZ about some of Horton's favorite guys that might be under-rated by their FO.

still need a CB2 (Jammer!) and FS (draft).

Our D is very set up for the 3-4...

Look at Big Phil's game...he's disruptive and big, hes a terrific 3-4 DE on the strong side to be a run stuffer. Rubin has been a 3-4 NT. Winn is perfect for the pass rushing side of the 3-4 DE spot. Hughes can be a backup NT (with Big Phil shifting inside on obvious passing downs) Rucker can be a backup. We'll need to find a backup DE though...We only have 5 guys that translate there.

As for LBs...DQ and JMJ inside, Fort and Robertson back em up (unless Robertson can play outside which i think he can, in which case Carder can be a GOOD inside 3-4 LB). on the outside, Gocong has done it. Sheard can learn it...as a guy at 255 he can learn the position, and be our primary pass rusher until he learns how to defend the pass better. Maiava will have to be jettisoned, and we'll need to bring in an outside LB or two...which is fine...

We have 3-4 guys to replace. Which is not a tough thing to do...and if we go with a guy like Damontre Moore or Bjoern Werner in the first...that takes care of a starter...also I'm championing Milliner.

i think we could try him there, but he's not the typical small, speed-rush DE that generally makes that transition easier.

maybe he could handle it, but i question that movement. i think he'd be on the trade-block to see if we could get someone else's OLB that is switching to the 4-3 (was hoping KC would switch and we could go after Hali, oh well)

Phil Taylor isn't a 3-4 DE. Period. His only shot in the 3-4 is NT. It remains to be seen if he can make that transition. If he can, then we're good at NT.

Winn MIGHT be able to transition to DE. That's far from certain though. Other than that, we don't really have anybody who can play base 3-4 DE. We're looking at finding 2-3 guys just at DE.

DQ and Gocong have done it before (DQ poorly so). They would probably be our core ILBs. We would need to rebuild the OLB roster. I don't think Sheard will be able to make that transition and all our other LBs aren't built to play 3-4 OLB. We'd need to find at least 2-3 guys.

You're joking, right? You talk like 3-4 DEs and OLBs are simple to find. As we saw ourselves, they are hard to find. If we go to a base 3-4, we're rebuilding the front seven. We'll have no choice.

I have no question that he would make a very good NT. Problem is, we already know Rubin is a very good NT. Hughes and Kitchen can probably also play NT well. How are we going to take advantage of all those assets?

I don't really care what the philosophy is, as long as he can use the good players we have drafted on the DL for the last 2 years. Find a way to make it work.

We aren't. Hughes and Kitchen aren't assets to a 3-4 defense. They aren't stout enough at the point of attack to be NTs and they aren't tall or athletic enough to be DEs in a base 3-4.

If we hire Horton I am confident he will take advantage of our players strengths. In Arizona he had Calais Campbell, Darnell Dockett, Vonnie Holliday, and Dan Williams (among others). Depending on the situation he would line up all of those players at different positions.

Dockett played end most of the time and he is far from the prototypical 3-4 defensive end.

By keeping the 4-3? Nah, that would have been too easy

Sheard and Taylor, 2 of our "foundation" players will have to learn a new position. Everyone assuming that they will adapt and play as good in the 3-4 after learning for 2 years playing in the 4-3 is being EXTREMELY naive. They will most likely regress and in Sheard's case there's a chance that he will flat out bust O.Roye-style (when we tried to convert him, remember?)....he's a SDE 4-3 DE....those guys are almost always very hard to transition into a 3-4 but since Sheard has more of a WDE/SDE tweener body everybody expects him to play SOLB in the 3-4 but that's a HUGE leap for him. Can he cover TEs and RBs? You really up think he's up for this?

Toying like this with 2 of our top picks and foundation players is beyond stupid...on top of that we created at lest 2-3 other need that didn't exist before. Our Front 7 was alll but set, all we needed was a RDE and maybe another OLB (Gocong-Dqwell-Robertson would have been good to go imho)...now? we need half the front 7 positions and pray 2 of our top talents can transition

The switch is stupid anyway I look at this...

If we switch to a traditional 3-4 defense I would agree that our personnel doesn't fit. But the only thing we know right now is that our head coach wants a hybrid defense. Meaning the situation will dictate the defensive set.

I expect Sheard to become a pass rushing specialist. His job will be to go get the QB if he standing up or if his hand is on the ground.

Roye had one of his strongest years in the 3-4 (2005). He also came to us from (and left us for) Pittsburgh's 3-4 D. Not sure if you remember things clearly there.

Ray Horton and Todd Bowles will both find new homes as defensive coordinators, according to league sources.

Horton, not expected to be retained by new Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians, will run the defense of the Cleveland Browns under coach Rob Chudzinski.

I dont see how Phil couldnt be a good 3-4 DE. The man is quick off the snap, he's disruptive and hes strong as ever. He also commands double teams. He could/would open up so many lanes for our LBs it would be unbelieveable. Throw him next to Rubin and hes going to do very well. Think of Big Phil as an Aaron Smith type player. Just bigger and a little slower. Thats why he goes on the strong side for the run. Phil could change what the 3-4 is supposed to look like. 30 pounds heavier than JJ Watt, but do you have any doubt he could be as disruptive. He is very quick in short spaces, very strong at the point of attack and does his job well. Phil could easily translate to the 3-4.

If you look at Winn's skill set, he transitions to 3-4 DE better than 4-3 anything. His game is suited for the 4-3...a lot of people said he was miscast in a 4-3 coming out of the draft anyway...hes a prototypical 3-4 DE.

I dont think that Hughes and Kitchen are useless in the 3-4 either. Kitchen came from Baltimore, where he was a backup NT...he knows how to do it. Hughes, could easily back up big Phil as their games are similar (although Big Phil does it way better). He can be a strong side DE in the 3-4 and handle the run and take up space and blockers.

3-4 DLers main jobs are to eat up blockers or beat your man 1-on-1. Phil, Hughes, Winn, and Rubin do that very very well. And Rucker is also the kind of player that could do the job as well...and could backup Winn...

To me it looks like a dynamite depth chart.

Starters: Phil, Rubin, Winn
Backup: Hughes, Kitchen, Rucker

Our OLBs will be the biggest issue, but Gocong has played outside before. Our ILBs would be set as DQ, JMJ (who played in the 3-4 in Nevada), Fort and Robertson.

Assuming Sheard cant transition is silly. He's a very good 4-3 DE but he played in a 2 pt stance a number of times last year...his only worry would be covering the pass...which is something they would give him bit by bit. A lot of players have made that transition though and done so rather successfully.

With a full offseason and a guy like Horton...theres no reason to think we couldnt transition rather seamlessly. Grab a couple FAs to compete as depth and we'll get it done.

Our D sets up to attack very well. Our guys play very disruptive football, especially along the DL...and with that style...its going to make it tough on the OL to either block them, double team, them...or worry about our LBs...

Gocong can go the outside in the 3-4 behind Phil because of his run stuffing ability, and since he isnt a great cover guy...he could excel in this defense. We just need someone on the pass rushing side...but thats where Sheard could do a good job...Just try to keep him away from tight ends for a time.

I've read this more than once on here and don't know where it came from. I watched Nevada many time in the 2010 season when Moch, Kaepernick, and Taua were draft prospects and they ran a 4-3. Moch was a DE and JMJ was the MLB.

I'm bummed we're switching away from the 4-3 as well.

There's obviously going to be a regression. The bright spot is that this guy Horton seems to be a good coach.

This Dline of ours just oozes talent. Lots of young talent and depth.

Good coaching + good talent = success

I'm probably over-simplifying, but I think the main takeaway is that we have a guy that will coach the you-know-what out of this defense. I'll take comfort in that while witnessing regression next season.

There is no level of sucking we haven't seen; in fact, I'm pretty sure we hold the patents on a few levels of sucking NOBODY had seen until the past few years.

The Cardinals fired the rest of their defensive coaching staff today. I wouldn't be surprised if one or more of these guys ended up on our staff.

Ron Aiken - Defensive Line
Louis Cioffi - Defensive Backs
Matt Raich - Linebackers
Ryan Slowik - Outside linebackers

I like the idea of having different coaches for the inside linebacker and outside linebackers in a 3-4 defense.

oe Cullen has been hired as the Browns’ new defensive line coach, Jacksonville Jaguars coach Gus Bradley told reporters today during Senior Bowl practices in Mobile, Ala.

The Florida-Times Union first reported the news.

Browns coach Rob Chudzinski reportedly interviewed Cullen, 45, last week. He replaces Dwaine Board, who served as the Browns’ defensive line coach for the past two seasons.

Cullen joined the Jaguars in 2010. He previously coached the Detroit Lions’ defensive line from 2006-08. Cullen also has 22 years of college coaching experience.

Ray Horton was named the Browns’ new defensive coordinator on Friday. He employed a 3-4 scheme during the past two seasons as the defensive coordinator of the Arizona Cardinals. The Browns used a 4-3 system the past two years under the guidance of Horton’s predecessor, defensive coordinator Dick Jauron.

The Browns still have openings for the following position coaches: quarterbacks, running backs, tight ends, linebackers and defensive backs.
