I don't think Trestman is exclusively a west coast offense guy.
maybe not exclusively, but using WCO concepts and then being a WCO-guy is where he had most of his success in the NFL.
part of the reason QBs went to him to train for the draft was for draft-prep on the WCO so that they could do well in interviews with WCO teams.
it's an interesting hire for sure (older, never was a NFL HC, out of NFL last 8yrs).

Lovie Smith might not get a defensive coordinator job. That's just crazy. He would make a helluva defensive backs coach for one year for some team.

holding out hope for Horton as our DC. man, that would be fantastic. i love how the Cardinals played defense (very aggressive).

If he somehow doesn't get a HC job, how about making him our DC while keeping the 4-3 in place? This move would make me go from skeptic to homer. I think it's incredibly stupid to switch the scheme on D. It pretty much nullifies whatever development our young front 7 had the past couple of seasons
Make no mistake: if we go to a 3-4 base scheme, which is looking VERY likely, then we're in a complete REBUILD. Exactly what pretty much 99% of this board DIDN'T want. New coaches, new FO, new schemes everywhere, new terminology....our players start from scratch...yet again...and they will most likely look like crap in their 1st season "learning"...yet again
This team can win 8+ games and be a PO contender if they just leave the D the hell alone and Chud just works with the Offense....makes too much sense I guess

At this point it is a pipe dream. I would think we already have our defensive coordinator already lined up.
I think Horton eventually ends up in Arizona after the 92 candidates in front of him turn the job down. I guess part of his pitch was that he was going to bring Norv in as his offensive coordinator. Once Norv came here (Cleveland, not L.A.) he got moved to the bottom of the pile.

that is our ideal situation for next year. that we get Lovie Smith to be our DC and stick with the 4-3. we could keep some of the asst.'s in place and grow from there.
the only negative about that situation is that Lovie would likely be going somewhere else as a HC soon, but that could be true of Horton or Pagano or anyone else if we have success as well.

At least we know Norv isn't getting/shouldn't get) another shot as a head coach.

I'm actually kinda glad that we didn't, as things turned out. I really like the Chud hire, and like it more and more the more I think about it.

Yeah, though you know the press is going to throw out the "the Browns missed on him" angle.

I wanted no part of a college experiment. Teams have been hiring college coaches with no Pro experience for decades and 1 was successful the first time around.
Chud was the guy that I wanted to coach the browns and he is the football nerd this team needs. Now if we can get him to dump the 3-4 idea lol but at least Pagano's 3-4 is built upon the idea of same personnel switching between schemes depending upon circumstance.
Congrats Philly fans, I think you got the HC you deserve.

What a Diva this guy is. So glad we "missed out" on him. Somewhat telling that Banner fell for an EGO like this....it takes one to see one I guess

plenty of college coaches have been successful in the NFL.
chip is incredibly organized, has a systematic way of practicing and running games, believes wholeheartedly in sabremetrics and uses those to devise those practice and game methods while having a style of play that largely WILL translate to the NFL (as we are seeing in these playoffs).
i really wanted to get a coach who would be an innovator and there is no doubt that chip will be a guy that will attempt to be one. whether or not he is successful is up for a HUGE debate, but he'll go down swinging if he goes down.
Chud is not a bad consolation prize though.

I can't say this doesn't hurt a little more now, but I do like the Chud hire so I'm not gonna mope around about it.
Whatever though, we had to move on with our search. They did the right thing. Who knows what went on in those meetings and why he pulled away when it seemed like they were so close. We will never know so it doesn't matter.
I just can't blame them for flying back to Cleveland and starting the thing over. There's a fine line between panicking and hiring someone immediately, and waiting too long as other candidates sign elsewhere. I'm not gonna bag Jimmy or Joe Banner for it. The media will take this and run with it though.

Wonder of Kelly got some more information on upcoming sanctions at Oregon and decided now was the best time to Carroll out of there.

I think my list of people I wanted for the HC was:
Kelly (Chip) Chudzinski Trestman - Zimmer (Tied)
I could argue that Trestman, Zimmer and Chudzinski were all tied in my mind, but I'm glad we got one of them.

Lastly, I'm curious.
Either Kelly found out how serious the sanctions are going to be, or the Eagles opened the vaults to land Kelly?
I'm guess a combination of both?

alternate answer: Barry Switzer
and honestly, there are few coaches who even fit that category of no professional experience. Steve Spurrier even spent 3 seasons in the pro's as a USFL HC of the Tampa Bay Bandits

You REALLY still believe that WE moved on from HIM? Make that 2 J&J interviewed this douche, got all excited, scheduled a 2nd date to which he never showed up and then they took of the egg on their face with the PR-towel. I mean, our HC, Chud, wasn't even scheduled for an interview before this telenovela

The answer will be that he didn't move on from Kelly, Kelly turned us down.
Also, there will be the criticism that we're so inept we couldn't land our first choice. And he shouldn't have been our first choice because we're so inept. In other words, we're so inept, we couldn't even land a guy we shouldn't have wanted.

I'm excited to see if his offense can work in the NFL. I'm also glad we aren't the ones taking the chance on him.
I also don't think that we are going to see the exact offense in the NFL that he ran in college. That's why I still think they will get rid of Vick.

Didn't Kelly just accept a premium for staying at Oregon?

perhaps he preferred Philly, but Chip had no reason to walk away from the table with the Browns even if he were merely using us as leverage

You can "move on" from an ex girlfiriend BUT still be axed by her, right?
It's pretty evident how this unfolded and it was reported multiple times too

You're right it is.
The Browns had high interest in him. They thought he was going to be a great coach. They set up a second interview. He then stood them up for the second interview and then they left because they didn't want a flake as a head coach.
But no, it's because Joe Banner or the bogeyman or something, right?
you had a good run Hank.
