I am in the minority with this but I hated the Mangini firing because I saw signs all season of solid coaching.. I will have to look this up but if memory serves me correct we had the least amount of season pentalties under his regime and tackling was actually considered an important thing.. He was just crap at identifying talent and lacked in game adjustments which this team was in desperate need of.. Replacing him was a necessity but making that move and inserting Shurmer was a travesty and a crime to us fans..
Holmgren seemed more concerned with lining the pockets of his buds.. I swear his agent must have had some SERIOUS dirt on him LOL!
I truly see no reason why we don't have a shot at .500 record this year..
On a side note, it is amazing how many "Browns" fans that troll the ESPN boards have no idea of Chud much less trash him as not qualified yet throw out names like Lovie Smith, Ken Whisenhunt and Jim Tressell.
This is gonna sound a bit stupid, but when speaking of Mangini, the bottom line is, he didn't win enough. Fewest penalties is nice, but fewest or close to fewest wins trumps that.
Thank you Capt.Obvious... Great to see you alive and still..... Daman..

Do I really think Chud was a bad or boring hire? Well, Terry Robiskie had 1 win when he was interim HC after Butch left. Bring Terry back, or make anybody on the planet hc, blah blah blah, why be a naysayer. I'm gonna try not to post. Go Browns! Good luck Chud, hope you're better than I'd imagine.
Can Deshaun Watson play better for the Browns, than Baker Mayfield would have? ... Now the Games count.

... I'm pretty excited about this hire compared to some others we were looking at. He's a young guy that has run an exciting offense, can't wait to see who he actually brings in.

An interesting article with a couple of useful nuggets (in bold): Quote:
BEREA, Ohio -- New Browns coach Rob Chudzinski is set to name Norv Turner his offensive coordinator soon, a source said, and also hire a new defensive coordinator to replace the well-liked Dick Jauron.
Turner, who was fired last week as coach of the Chargers, brings 15 years of head-coaching experience, which would be a boon for a first-time head coach. Turner has had a few other opportunities, including a possible chance with Ray Horton if he gets the Cardinals job, but is set to land here, a source said. He's currently out of town, so the hiring has yet to be announced.
He's a longtime mentor to Chudzinski, who served as Turner's tight ends coach and assistant head coach in 2009 and 2010 in San Diego.
"Having the assistant head coach experience where I spent all the time with Norv and saw all the things he had to do, I've been around the people who've given me the opportunities to see what it takes to be a great head coach and hopefully I can put all those things together and get that done," Chudzinski said.
Chudzinski, who met with current staffers on Friday, declined to comment on whether or not Turner is coming or on any other specific assistants.
"This is not the time or place," he said in his introductory news conference.
As for who will call plays, Chudzinski, who's known for being good at it, said he's open to giving it up.
"That will be determined by the staff we put together," said Chudzinski. "If I'm comfortable with the offensive coordinator doing that, he'll do it. If I'm not sure about that or uncomfortable, I'll call the plays until I become comfortable with that."
Chudzinski indicated he'll hire a new defensive coordinator, and that the hire will dictate whether or not the Browns switch to a 3-4 defense. Chudzinski has been involved with both the 3-4 and the 4-3, and a hybrid of the two.
"We're going to be an attacking-style defense," he said. "Whether that's a 4-3 or 3-4 and nowadays, there's a lot of hybrid systems out there. It'll tie in more with the coordinator that I'll hire, and I think we have the versatility of going either way."
Chudzinski is expected to hire Turner's son, Scott, an offensive assistant for the Panthers. Jaguars defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, who held the same post with the Browns in 2008, could be on the radar in Cleveland but also is in line to interview for the head-coaching job in Jacksonville.
As for the new GM or personnel director, the interviewing has begun. The Browns are interviewing Kansas City's Ray Farmer, and have also asked for permission to interview the 49ers' Tom Gamble, the Vikings' George Paton and the Seahawks' John Idzik. NFL Network's Mike Lombardi, the former Browns director of player personnel, is also a candidate.
"Joe and I have begun the search for a GM/player personnel person," said Browns owner Jimmy Haslam. "The remarks will be just like they were back on Dec. 31. We could have somebody in a few days. It may take a month. The key thing is to get the right person. I think we're putting together a great team here, the right person to work closely with Joe and Rob and putting a championship-caliber team on the field.
"There will once again be all kinds of rumors. Once again, now there will be three people because Rob will be involved in the process, not two in terms of who are aware of what's going on."
Some coaches who were with the Browns last season are also getting looks. The Charlotte Observer reported that former Browns head coach Pat Shurmur is a candidate to replace Chudzinski as Panthers offensive coordinator, where he'd work with quarterback Cam Newton.
Browns offensive coordinator Brad Childress is interviewing for a spot on Andy Reid's staff in Kansas City, a source said. Same with offensive line coach George Warhop, Adam Caplan of Sirius XM radio reported. Browns defensive assistant Chuck Bullough took the defensive coordinator job at Syracuse.

I'd be really curious to see how Shurmur works with Cam, a conservative offensive coordinator like Pat would seem to be a poor fit for a team with a dynamic QB like Cam.

That's exactly what he said, Chuds had he job for 2 days and already talk of "if this doesn't happen, he should be fired" starts.. What in the hell is wrong with people.

I was shocked at first when I heard the hiring of Chud. After doing some research, I feel better.
After watching the presser, I'm very excited. Chud's facial expressions said it all. He was genuinely excited to the the Browns head coach.
I got the same feeling I had when Urb took over at Ohio State and he talked about his passion for the Buckeyes. Same could be said for Tressel but I was too young at the time to understand it.
One thing's for damn sure: Browns players will understand exactly what it means to be a part of the Cleveland Browns. Because the coach fully understands in a way that no other coach before him (and Mangini did a great job of trying to connect to the tradition of the team, but he still can't organically connect the passion in a way Chud can).
If Chud is as bright and motivated and plans on being schematically ahead of the game like he claims and brings in the coaching staff he wants to bring in, there's no way he'll fail. He can't let down his boyhood dream.

What does that mean, exactly?
In today's NFL very few players give a flip about old-school traditions. Sure, it's great for Chud to have this feeling of coming home, but is he really going to produce that much more of an edge because his passion for Cleveland will imprint itself onto the players? No way.
There isn't some rich tradition in Cleveland. It's been almost 30 years since we've had a winner here. There is some history, but there is zero sense of "what it means to be a Cleveland Brown." The only sense current players have of "being a Brown" is that of drafting high every year.
It sounds like I'm banging on the town. I'm making a point. People shouldn't get caught up in his love for being a Brown as some positive factor. Each and every guy who gets the chance to be a head coach is freakin' head-over-heals filled with joy and positivity for his job. It's a nice side-story for the fans of the Browns to have a local boy come home, but that has zero bearing on his viability as a coach, and does nothing for the players.
Don't think that Chud wanted to be here any more than Shurmur or Mangini. All the coaches that came through here knew it was their one big shot to make it.
It's a nice story that Chud gets to "come home." That has no bearing on his viability as a coach.
Now before any suggests that's hate for Chud, it's not. People just need to take the emotion out of the equation. I couldn't care less if Paul Brown himself found Chud as an orphan in a basket in the original Dawg Pound. He's either going to win over the players because he's good, or he's not. His ties to the city mean nothing to the players.

I heard Banner answer a question about Chud's roots as a Browns fan, and he answered "Its a plus, but it was never one of the requirements." (or words to that effect).
But with that said, it matters to me that the coach shares my sentimental tie to our team. Seriously, without the emotion, the sentimentalism, and the ties to a legacy thats before our times why would anyone stay a fan of this broken franchise? Tell you what, I was as bitter as bitter can be when they left in '95 - thought I was done with the NFL. But I got tears in my eyes when I saw those helmets and uni's take the field for the first preseason game in '99. I don't know what that means, but its something.

Actually, it's if it DOES happen. If Weeden gets the job without having to earn the job, then Chudzinski SHOULD BE fired. Yes. And I'm only replying to whoever made the statement that it was good because Weeden wouldn't have to look over his shoulder to see if he's in jeopardy of losing his job. I want Weeden to feel that he could get cut in pre-season or that he could be sitting the pine every week of the season as a back-up or even third string. Look at what happened in Seattle. They signed Matt Flynn, who I'm sure expected to be given the starting job, considering what he got paid (3-years, $26 mil with $10 mil guaranteed) to come over. Then he got outplayed by a shorter rookie QB and has barely seen the field this season. Thaddeus Lewis has had more opportunity than Matt Flynn this season. So, I reiterate my view, that if Weeden is handed the job without earning it that Rob Chudzinski should be fired as the Browns head coach. There are only a handful of teams that would even give Weeden a shot at starting for them, and fewer still that he could actually earn the job in an open competition. Sadly, the Browns are probably the ONLY team that would consider giving him the starting job without him earning it. Is it any wonder why the Browns suck so bad, year after year after year?

I can't or won't answer for Ammo.. he can handle that on his own. But I agree with him and the reason for me anyway is pretty simple,
We have a HC that grew up a Browns fan. Now you can Poo Poo that all you want, but I get the feeling from watching him in the presser that this job is his everything.
Look back at every head coach we've had starting with Marty or even Sam. They all said the same thing,,, that they understand the tradition of the Browns. I can read a book and understand the tradition.. I can't read a book and FEEL the tradition.
Chud lived it..
To me, that means he's going to work harder than the last several coaches because for him, more is on the line.
How does that make the players understand what it's like to be a Cleveland Brown? Well, if you believe that players are a reflection of their coach and if you believe they take on the personality of their coach as I do, then it only stands to reason that some of that will rub off.
Lots of, no wait, make that all New Head Coaches say about the same things. I mean I think they send them to school to teach them what to say in an introductory presser..
Chud was no different.. Attacking O, Attacking D, Attacking ST. yada yada. every one of them say the same thing.
But Chud had a look on his face. I'm sorry for not being able to describe it well enough, but to me, there was a sincerity there that you just don't generally see. You could see the pride well up in his eyes, the raw emotion that he seemed to work very hard to contain. Most of them are robots, Chud was anything but a robot.
Having said all that, is success guaranteed? No.. it's not.

I understand what your saying and agree, but: there always is a but...let me just add something
What does it mean to be a Cleveland Brown.....first off it's nothing you can hold in your hand or put in a bag & carry it around, it's not found in a store or something you can put away an store it on a self. It's a feeling, a feeling you try hard to explain but always come up short when trying to explain just how deep it's enbedded in your self, it's so much a part of you at times it scares you just how much it means, it's a love where no matter how much you complaine or how much you hate watching them you cant go without it, it's something that when you think about them being a Brown makes you smile, makes you cry breaks your heart and warms it at the same time, ya Red right 88 broke our hearts, but I was in municipal stadium with my dad who passed away in 2005, he worked overtime to buy us tickets. It's seeing Cleveland the city snow covered in christmas light of orange & brown while walking to a Browns playoff game or late season home game, wearing your Browns gear down town with people who would never talk to you, wave & yell here we go Brownies here we go...it's sitting in a bar arguing who is the best LT we ever had, Joe Thomas, Doug Dieken, Cody Rison, it's Metcalf vs Cribbs, it's Kosar VS Graham it's Kelly vs Brown, it's Steve everett wearing a browns bandana as a member of the ravens, and at the end of the night shaking hands and both being right....toad I know you know this i didnt have to write all this but (there it is again) when people say bring back the tradtion we all should realize the tradition isnt gone, it's still here in all us great fans, what does it mean to be a Brown, I cant explain it, but I know it's something I can never stop, something I can never stop doing or caring about,
so for me, this cant be taught, but if they win & stick around they will soon understand what it means to be a Clevleand Brown, all they have to do is ask, Doug dieken, Clay, Bernie, Dawson, I could keep going,
Toad I know this in no way answers your statement but I just wanted to add it cant be answered it has to be lived.

Wow man, good post. Gave me goose bumps. Being A Browns Fan is like being a parent of your children. You would do anything for them and Love them and share in their Good Times and Bad Times. When you look at other kids (Teams) you don't feel the same way. I know how you feel man. It's in the Blood.

Well said Clay. I remember my dad saved up the same as your dad did to take me to a monday night game against Dallas back in the 70's we both were 3-0 I think and the place was electric. He's also gone and the 1 thing I wish I could have shared with him was watching a Browns championship win. This isnt a football town because we love football as much as its a football town because we love our Browns,
If you need 3 years to be a winner you got here 2 years to early. Get it done Browns.

Really? Are you talking about this regime, or the past regime? Because this new regime hasn't done anything to even remotely give anyone a clue as to what their plans are moving forward and as far as I know, you would have nothing to base this claim on.
Secondly, if you plan to run a vertical offense, who did the Browns have other than Weeden that had the tools to even attempt that with in training camp last year? They had already given McCoy a year and knew he wasn't the answer at the position.
So the fact of the matter is the Browns didn't have anyone to "compete" with Weeden last year. But let's not dwell on that.

Quote:
Is it any wonder why the Browns suck so bad, year after year after year?
The Chud O took DA to a 10 win season and the playoffs. But to try to invent some story that there was actually someone in training camp that would have been true competition for Weeden last year is just silly.
Even in pre-season last year, Thad was exciting to watch, but his mental mistakes were many. After maturing a bit more over the course of the season, he looked much better by this seasons end.
At 29, they had to give Weeden the reigns. There wasn't time for him to be schooled. You make it sound as if McCoy or Thad were actually people who could compete for the job at thetime. When everyone observing training camp agreed that Weeden was head and shoulders above the competition.
When you really have no legit QB on your roster and you draft a QB in the first round, you play him. They did.
To remotely suggest the same will happen this year is based on pure speculation with no basis. A far more logical conclusion this year would be that McCoy in no way fits the style of O that Chud wishes to run. So McCoy being gone and another QB being picked up to compete and that fits Chud's system will be brought in is a far more logical train of thought.

I know what your saying toad...and its true to a certain extent. I can't even handle all the hugging, joking, and smiling after the games. What's to smile about if you just got stomped?
All of us know that the Browns are our heart. They win and we're on cloud 9. They lose and we're pissed till next Sunday.
Chud has control over one thing....himself. He's one of us...meaning he feels what we feel in those wins and losses. Nobody wants to lose....but him being a fan makes it different.
We scream and yell...go on endless rants, and walk around pissed. And yet we don't have the ability to affect the players directly.
He does. How you think monday practice is gonna be if they look like crap? Probably as hard as legally allowed.
He is gonna demand perfection.

Yet that's the problem, isn't it. Chud has lived it. These young players who are coming to the team weren't even born when Kosar was playing his final, meaningful snaps for the Browns. They are from places like Florida, or California, or Texas, or Oklahoma, and clearly don't know what it's like to live in the Rust Belt.
If Chud brings back a regular winner, then maybe the players will get a feel for what it means to be a Brown. Unfortunately, all I've seen over the recent decade are players like Cribbs who talk a great game, but still don't get what "bleeding Brown" means.
I'd say thanks to y'all who took my post for it's real value and didn't see it as a slam against anything Cleveland.

Just read it today, can't see how it could be interpreted as a slight against Cleveland or the Browns.... if anyone doesn't get it.... they just don't "get it".

I understand that the fans have this emotional attatchment. I know the feeling and it's a very emotional and passionate feeling. But let's have a reality check here.
Teams wish to retain great players. People that it would cost them an arm and a leg to replace, if they could replace them. You can consider th LT, QB, CB and a pass rushing specialist high on that list.
IMO- You can pretty much expect Joe Thomas to be a life long Brown if anybody on our current roster. The NFL of days gone by does not exist anymore. At least not in regards to being a game. Now it's a HUGE business.
Now players understand their widow of oppertunity can very likely be a small one. That they need to make the most while the getting is good. While it's not the fan friendly option, for all of those fans that hate them for leaving, a new group of fans will be awaiting them with open arms.
Let's face it, the NFL is a corporate entity that writes long term, big money deals who really never have to keep them in regards to players. The only thing a team is obligated to is wht the signing bonus is over the life of the contract if a player is let go.
While on the other hand, if a team let's a coach or FO guy go, the team is obligated to the contract. So while loyalty is an admirable trait, where should that loyalty be?
For a corporate entity who you think isn't offering you full market value? To a team who signs you to a huge contract yet isn't obligated to fullfill it as written?
Or should that loyalty be to your family? To make as much money as the market will bear in order to do as much for your family while that window of oppertunity is open?
As fans we often expect loyalty and dedication from the players. We remember the days when the money and competiton for these players wasn't as furious as it is today.
But the business side to this game is much different these days. Players have figured out that they are on the "What have you done for me lately" train. That as such, they owe no more loyalty to a team, than the loyalty a team has for them.
A severe injury or set of injuries can end their career at any time. That ends the big money for most of their life. For these reasons, they put their families ahead of the teams and thier fans. Because long after they are a memory to us, they and their families are still there.
From a fans perspective, we often expect more than what we realisticly should. They have figured out that often times we as fans, love them while they're great and want them ran out of town on a rail if they have a single bad season.
Is that really where you would invest your loyalty if you were them?
Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I get that, and I don't blame a player for doing whats best for his family. Before free agency and big money these guys were with a team forever. Now its one shot for a big payday from whoever.
The point I was trying to make is that chud feels what we feel. If they lay an egg, i'm sure practice isn't going to be fun.
I'm sure he wouldn't be afraid to point out that laughing and joking on camera when pitt is kicking our butt is frowned apon.
Maybe i'm totally off base and it doesn't matter. Maybe its just all a big show.
Chud being a lifelong browns fan means little in the grand scheme of things. But if alittle of our passion for this teams success seeps into the players thru him on gameday then that will show.
I'm more excited because I seriously think he's gonna get the time to do this. Haslam don't strike me as a knee-jerk, or panic type of guy. The did their homework, talked to a ton of coaches, and found who they liked the most.
I don't see haslam second guessing himself. We might be starting over, but I think this is the last time. Plus we have a ton of young talent as a base to work with.
I for one can't wait.

Banner had a lot of smart things to say in that interview.
People should get past all the talk that he doesn't know football, only business. He's sounding smarter and smarter every day...

Don't worry the draft is coming up. People will turn their complaining energy to that soon enough.

Good video. JH & JB seems to be doing their research and conducting their searches in a professional manner, making educated and informed decision. Banner is a solid businessman with an impressive track record and years of NFL experience. People need to get beyond judging him on his looks and pundit bias. One is sophomorically ridiculous and the other is tantamount to judging someone based on Tony Grossi's biased hyperbolic rhetoric.

I agree. The more I listen to the guy, the more I like him. He is far from some pencil neck who doesn't know anything about football.

Then why exactly did Haslam state we learned alot as we went through the process of talking to people? If Banner was so smart he would have already know this stuff. I like the spin, its all good. I love the Chud hire but if he goes 4-12 next year and then 5-11 the year after lets see how people feel about how great Banner is. That being said I personally am not accepting excuses anymore. Heckert built a foundation. The team should contend for a playoff spot next year to the end. This bull thinking of we need to rebuild is just that bull. Move forward or move back this is all on Haslams and Banner. Again I like the HC hire, lets see what they do with the GM.
If you need 3 years to be a winner you got here 2 years to early. Get it done Browns.
