I perused his Wiki page, and looked to the teams he OC'd for through his career. Besides Dallas, who was LOADED with talent, I didn't see a team that even remotely looked like a winner.

Why do people consider him such a great offensive mind?

You can't just look at his time as an OC. It was his offense in San Diego as well.

The one that a Pat Shurmur coached Browns defeated 7-6? Granted, it was sloppy weather conditions, but still, he lost to Pat Shurmur.

And the one that led the NFL in offense in 2010.

The offensive line of the Chargers this past year was missing 3-4 starters at various points in the season. At one stretch they were starting an undrafted free agent rookie at left tackle and Rex Hadnot (remember that bum?) next to him as a 3rd stringer.

Lemme sum it up with this paragraph clipped from an article on December 4th:

Quote:

Injuries appear to be the norm for the Chargers’ offensive line this year, and it certainly rings true for the offensive tackle spot. Kevin Haslam is literally the only healthy player remaining for that spot, and he was just signed off of the practice squad a week and a half ago.

A much fairer representation would be to evaluate what their offenses did from 2007 through 2012.

The great irony is that if you view the hiring of Turner as a win, we can actually thank Pat for his contributions to that.

'Bout time Pat did something for us.

Good question, Rivers was 14-2 under Marty, had 2 good years with Norv then seemed to down spiral. But it has been mentioned injuries were a big part of it.

Spanos said his goal is the Superbowl and he is headed in a new direction...

Because he took the mid aughts Dolphins teams with Jay Fielder and Ricky Williams and made it a top half of the NFL offense.

He did some decent things with Alex Smith.

His offense while in San Diego was great, until this last year when he failed miserably on the O-line.

Oh, and Dallas.

you had a good run Hank.

OLine has been the Chargers problems for the past couple of years.

I have nothing but the utmost respect for Norv as the OC. I don't think we could have found a better selection.

That's a valid and good point even if it was meant in jest.

In 1999 as head coach of the Redskins (and offensive play caller) Norv Turner had the #2 offense in the NFL.

His QB? 31 year old Brad Johnson, who threw for 4,005 (only Beuerlein, Warner, Favre, and Manning had more). You're probably saying, "Well, he probably had the best receivers in the league!" If you can believe it, no, he didn't. His receivers were the immortal Michael Westbrook and Albert Connell. They had a combined 2,323 yards receiving that season. He also utilized his fullback Larry Centers very well in the passing game, he had 544 receiving yards (Larry Centers was a total beast). He had a very good running back in Stephen Davis who ended up with 1,405 rushing yards at 4.8 yards per carry.

He took average NFL players and made them great.

That is why people consider him a great offensive mind. We are lucky to have him as our offensive coordinator.

BEREA, Ohio -- New Browns coach Rob Chudzinski is set to name Norv Turner his offensive coordinator soon, a source said.

Turner is well-respected around the NFL as an OC, and has been for years. There's not much to debate there. I'd be perfectly happy with him running the O.
