With his arm strength and accuracy on deep routes

Ball Thrown / Comp - Att / Pct / Yds / TDs - Ints

21 - 30 yds / 6 - 33 / 18.2% / 140 / 4 - 4
31 - 40 yds / 4 -13 / 30.8% / 227 / 3 - 2
41+ / 1 - 6 / 16.6% / 62 / 1 - 0

Accuracy?

Honestly you can give me any stat you want. I know what I see when I watch football, he has an accurate arm on deep routes.

I hate this statement but Im going to have to say it. Stats can say whatever you want them to say. Its the eye test that tells the tail. When GM's and scouts sit in the stands they are doing the "eye test" otherwise they would just use stats to project a draft board. You can't be that oblivious to it.

In the NFL stats and measurables are only a part of the total package. Some guys have great speed but bad game speed others have avg speed but great game speed.
I hope you understand my point. Its not all about what the numbers say sometimes its about what you see as well.

There is one qb I have had in mind for the last couple years and think we should draft him this year in the third or fourth and that is Landry Jones out of Oklahoma.

He was widely considered a first round talent and would have been draft mid round somewhere had he came out last year. He might even go before the third of fourth but he is a guy I would like to take a look at for insurance purposes. He has alot of potential and could probably push for the starting job in a year or two.

As much as I like Oklahoma..Jones is arisk..not sure how mentally tough he is..he implodes when under pressure way more than I care for.

Sure, stats don't tell the complete tale, but I saw the games too and what I saw with my eyes coincides with what the stats tell.

I think the funny part is you are talking about giving him an extention to his contract. Talk about being a pimp for a guy wow.

Did you miss the part where I discussed why a team trading for him would want to extend his contract?

If a team is going to give up a high draft pick for a guy, they don't want that player for just one season. They would want him for numerous seasons. That's why teams insist that the player in question sign a new deal.

From PFT:

The Cardinals dealt cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second-round pick to the Eagles to bring Kolb to the desert, then gave him a six-year contract worth $63.5 million.

From Wikipedia regarding the Matt Cassel trade:

In February 2009, the Patriots used their franchise tag on Cassel, extending him a one-year contract worth over $14 million, the largest one-year contract for an offensive player in NFL history.[2][3] Later that offseason, the Patriots made a trade which sent Cassel to the Chiefs,[4] who signed him to a 6 year, $62.7 million contract in July 2009.

From ESPN regarding the Carson Palmer trade to the Raiders:

Jackson's mantra all season has been "the time is now," and he backed that up by dealing for Palmer.

The Raiders also renegotiated Palmer's contract, giving him a $2.5 million guaranteed deal for the rest of this season, $12.5 million with $5 million guaranteed in 2012, $13 million in 2013 and $15 million in 2014.

Any team trading a very high pick to the Niners will want Smith to sign or re-work his deal because they want him around for a while.

Quote:

BTW I have not heard Haslam or Banner endorse Gordon or T-Rich either so are they out as well?

They are given's and don't require anyone's endorsement. QB's like Weeden, who belong to the previous regime and were weird projects are subject to different rules.

ESPN

The trade that sent Matt Schaub from the Atlanta Falcons to the Houston Texans not only made the three-year veteran quarterback an instant starter, it made him a very rich man.

Schaub signed a six-year, $48 million contract with the Texans, a move that officially consummates the trade.

Consider yourself updated.

I just can't let the Romo thing go...

Has anyone watched him play?

He is probably the worst 4th quarter QB in the game. Prone to INT, fumbles and miscues when the game is on the line...

No one will ever confuse him with being cool under pressure....

Not trying to be a contrarian (this time hehe) Charger, but I used to think the same thing. Then one night I started digging, and found that Romo isn't any worse in the 4th than he is in the rest of the game. In fact, he's slightly better.

I don't wan to post all the data, but here's the link to the info: espn

Because I'm surrounded by Cowboys fans here, I've discussed him ad-nauseum and have come to a conclusion which may or may not be correct: I believe that the Cowboys have so often relied upon him in the 4th quarter to win games, that we just expect him to do it every time. Yet when he fails, he fails in spectacular fashion, and because he's so widely exposed to national media and public attention, everything he does is remembered.

Think about this...when was the last time you remember him with a big 4th quarter, come-back win? Now think about how many times you recall him bumbling around fumbling, or throwing late INT's?

I believe he's just over-exposed, and we as fans tend to expect QB's to win every game, so when they do something to lose, it stays with us longer.

That's just a theory, and I have no basis of fact for it.

NP but you didnt mention him in your post. And he looked like a scared puppy last week I expect much of the same this week. While I dont disagree if they gave up big money to make a play for Smith I do disagree that Smith is A) worth making a play for and B) going to be any better then any elite QB out there.
If the goal is to win a SB then why commit to a guy for another say 5 years that has shown hes not the man for the last 6?

We wont even give a QB 1 maybe 2 years to be the man. Heads would roll if it failed and those heads cant roll so we as fans would just be STUCK.

My thoughts on him are hes a great reg season player but come crunch time he folds. No offense but at some point in time you have to produce beyond just getting the girl to the dance.

There is a fear that Smith wouldn't look as good anywhere else as he looks in San Fran. I would be surprised if his numbers were exactly as good or better because of various factors. I also understand the thought that Weeden or any other QB should get more than a year or two. I'm not advocating dumping Weeden for Smith (or am I ) but I am making the case that if we went after Smith there's a great deal of sense and logic behind the idea.

The only logic behind your post is Weeden needing to get another year. Alex Smith had fallen on his face way too many times in the past with coaches not named Harbaugh. He can't even start on a run-first team that would only use him to keep the defense honest.

Then why the heck would you endorse toads thinking of the guy that was benched on a strong playoff contender should be a smart move? Why pay someone in picks and or money and be just worse then them?

I think the jury is far from being in an wheather benching Smith was a good move or not. Usually when you get a new regime hired such as with Harbough, they want "their guy". Smith wasn't "Harboughs guy".

Let's put it this way, we haven't had a QB who has thrown for over 70% since our return. We haven't had a QB with near a ratio of 13TD's to 5 int's.

Now if you don't see that as a huge upgrade at the position, so be it. We'll get a much better feel for wheather Harbough's change of QB's was the right thing to do or not as time goes along. As of now, opposing teams don't have a lot of film on Kap. We saw how that worked with Kelly Holcomb. I feel having a successful QB at the position putting up those kind of numbers, you simply don't make a change of QB mid season. But we'll see.

For you to suggest that making the QB change was the right thing to do and we should learn something from that is very pre-mature and the jury is still out.

Harbough wanted "his guy" and now he has it. Smith is an obvious upgrade over anything we've had.

I do think the cost should be factored in. But if you want to be sure this team goes in the right direction quickly, this would do it.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

And for the record, I had no idea who started the talk about Romo, nor was I pointing a finger.

Not offended at all. Dallas won't get rid of Romo but he would be much better than any other option we have next year. And I think he would do much better on the Browns than with the Cowboys because our oline is much better than the mess in Dallas.

I would not be opposed to Smith at a reasonable price. I would not give up our #6 overall or next year's 1st. We don't have a 2nd. I think SF demands better than a 3rd.

I heard Chuck Booms talking about the possibility that Derrick Anderson is coming back to Cleveland. Has anybody heard anything about this? Oh please tell me he wasn't talking about this because there was any reason to talk about it. I don't think I could stand the thought of Chud reuniting with DA.

Booms is funny and not full of himself as Trivisonno is. Booms spoke out about how lazy and unmotivated Holmgren was and how Shurmur shouldn't have been a HC.

If your into beavis and butthead Bill and Ted and jacka-- then yeah he is funny. However being stupid isnt funny to me. I quit listening to him along time ago always talking gay jokes, are your breasts big and farts are funny.
Sorry I got out of grade school along time ago.

As I said watch him on the Browns show and see how he gets schooled by men constantly. Golic esp owns him over and over.

EDIT and Trivisonno is the most pompus arse on the radio.

Just clicking.......bring back DA, B-Easy, and K2!!!! Woot woot

On a serious note, i could see us sticking with Thad Lewis, and Josh Johnson. I dont think they will dump/give up on weeden.....McCoy is all but history at this point.

Alex Smith certainly an option. Question what would it take to get him?

I have said this in other threads - Smith is a poor man's Trent Dilfer. No thanks. He would be a step backward.

This draft does not have any sure fire can't miss QBs.

I just threw up a lot...

Romo for the #6 overall?

ok... sorry...

I'm fine with sticking with Weeden for now.... if Romo is available for a 3rd? maybe... I don't give up anything more than that... guy has talent, but I'm not sold on what's between his ears. Maybe a change of scenery would do him good, but I'm not a fan.

And that is the problem with trying to trade for a Qb. Whether we are talking Romo or Smith or anybody else. What are you willing to give up to acquire them. Carson Palmer was traded for 2 1st rounders. Schaub who was a backup that never played went for two 2nd round picks.

I am sure the Niners think Smith is at least as valuable as Palmer and the Cowboys feel Romo is worth more than Palmer.

Would I give up #6 for either? No But if the Cowboys were to decide they wanted to trade Romo (doubtful) they would be expecting two 1st rounders in return. What would SF accept for Smith? I would guess a 2nd and a 3rd minimum (just my guess).

A step backwards...from what? Weeden? McCoy?

It's not as though anyone can say "But we need to see what these guys can do with a second year in the same system."

Besides, it's awfully hard to be a "poor man's Trent Dilfer" when he had exactly one season as a full-time starter where he had a rating higher than the 70's.

Simply put, Dilfer was a dud. Smith has had two seasons of really good play.

Quite honestly I find hard to believe that there is so much support for Brandon Weeden. Not really sure what evidence there is support that Weeden is the future.

Why did the 49's draft Kaepernick when Alex Smith was on the team and playing well?

Why did the Seahawk's draft Russell Wilson when they paid the money to free agent Matt Flynn?

Those teams made those moves because they where unsure of what they had. They knew there could be improvement. They felt position competition was good thing. All of the above.

Why then is Brandon Weeden a sacred cow? What has he done? What has he showed that would indicate he can do better?

He was inconsistent with accuracy. Showed little pocket presence. Was late to deliver many passes. Often made the wrong reads and decisions to follow. Most of the time he seemed to be a beat slow. In addition he did not progress as the season went on.

Best case he gets better and actually wins the job. Worst case he totally stinks and plays himself out of the lineup. Why would you not bring in competition?

I haven't gotten the impression from anyone that they think of Weeden as a sacred cow. Everyone who is not in favor of bringing in competition has said pretty much the same thing. That there is nobody out there that is any good to bring in to compete. No top FA Qb, no draftable guy worth #6 overall, no 3rd rounder who will come in and start right away. How does that equate to sacred cow?

Little pocket presence? Where's that coming from? You might check the sacks and fumbles lost numbers on all rookie QBs and then come back again....he even RAN pretty well for a pocket QB, picking his spots, all that while keeping his eyes downfield a lot. All signs of a pretty decent pocket presence, especially for a rookie QB...every QB looks bad on some pressure plays or sacks. Have you seen Peyton yesterday?

I consider pocket presence to be one of Weeden's nice surprises as it was a major question mark coming out of College.

I thought he held the ball too long at times, didn't sense the backside passrush ... no apparent "internal clock" that I think QB's need. I wish he'd watch film of Roethlisberger and learn that little 5-6 yard horizontal scramble that gives Ben a few extra seconds and also creates passing lanes.

Pocket presence is knowing when to move up or out . Feeling pressure before it is there.

My opinion he showed very little.

As far as the comment about the draft not having any top picks I disagree.

Watch Tyler Wilson. Let me know what you see. Do not rely on only his senior season when the Petrino scandal derailed the program, and the OL and receivers where horrible.

The only thing that I think I could agree with is that there isn't a QB worth the #6 pick in the draft and I don't think that is the way that the front office and Chudzinski are looking anyway. They're not even concerned with that at this moment. They want to get their coaching staff and front office positions assembled first.

I don't know about a 3rd round QB who is or isn't better than weeden But I'd really like to hear what FA QB is better than weeden? I mean, if there is one out there, then I sure as hell want Chud to go and get him?

Got any guys in mind?

Oh,, and from what I've seen, I don't see any high 1st round QB's in this draft.. so I guess we agree on that.

I think that Matt Moore is better than Weeden. Chase Daniel hasn't had many opportunities behind Drew Brees, but I think he's better than Weeden.

And as I stated, I don't think the Browns will be looking at drafting a QB in the first round anyway.

My guess is that we either draft an interior lineman like Warmack (if he's available) or DE/OLB tweener-type. I like the DE/OLB pick the most, even though Warmack would be a beast on the OL.

Getting a guard later in the draft and signing one like Andy Levitre from Bu¶falo could also be a solution to the OL issues.

A pass rushing DE like Bjoern Werner or Damontre Moore would seem to be the more likely possibilities, in my view. Both could work in either the 3-4 (OLB) or 4-3 (DE) spot but Werner is my preferred choice. He's better in pass coverage than Moore is and I think a better pass rusher. Plus, he would bring more exposure of the Browns to Germany.
