This should be a fun one. I knew there'd be no way the helmets would change.

My suggestion? Give the kids ONE day w/ some flashy logo on the helmet. Make some money on merch w/ that on it.

And do a throwback day w/ ALL white, including helmets . . .

Jimmy Haslam hoping for new Browns uniforms for 2014 season

Jan 15, 2013 -- 4:35pm

By Tony Grossi

Extra Points …

New duds on way for 2014: The Browns have notified the NFL they wish to explore changes in their uniforms, but the process won’t be completed until next year.

“Hopefully we’ll unveil uniforms at maybe this time next year for the 2014 season,” owner Jimmy Haslam said to ESPN Cleveland.

Haslam said the drawn-out process requires a formal notification of a uniform change to the NFL, which has occurred. League marketing people then collaborate with suppliers – currently NIKE – to present the team a variety of mockups. The team then may enlist the help of focus groups to whittle down the options.

Haslam and CEO Joe Banner are still acquiring a sense of the sensitivity to the Browns’ traditional colors and bland uniform style.

“You can mark this down – we’re not touching the helmets,” Haslam said.

Another no-no with Haslam: Cheerleaders. “They don’t fit Cleveland,” Haslam said.

I'm not a Nike uniform fan but since Haslam is keeping the helmet I'll try to be open minded.
As for the cheerleaders... Thanks again Haslam.
Now, for real, can you focus on the staff before the college offseason gets too deep.

About damn time. I know people don't like/fear change but we have needed an upgrade, and what better time than now. New owner, new coach, new stadium name, really just a whole new out-look about the Cleveland Browns.

Lets kick the losing mentality starting with the uniforms, though I know that won't be a popular choice around here.

And just a side note, there are quite a few teams out their who have changed there uniform and went on to win a superbowl in a few years. Lets hope that pans out for us.

I'm ready for new uniforms. These current "old style" uniforms have become far too heavily associated with the current malaise surrounding the franchise. I don't believe that a uniform chance is a cure all, however it is a very visible change point, and a subconscious break from the recent, and unsuccessful, past.

I saw a great darker, metallic orange uniform that looked incredible. I think that a slight change in the color of the helmet to match would be acceptable as well.

I'm with you, I'm cool with it. Actually really excited to see it.

And the helmet remains. which is our own unique identity. Sucks having to wait a year, but I'm happy to hear it. Let's get this team marketed so when we start to play consistently good football, we have some attention.

someone had a mock up of a darker orange, almost red jersey, with brown pants, and a metallic orange helmet.

I know it would never happen and im not sure I would want us to play in them all the time but my buddy has a mossy oak Cribbs jersey and it is awesome as hell.

I think it would be cool to have a camoflauge jersey to wear in one game to support our troops(though they don't wear mossy oak). Maybe it is just the hillbilly in me but that would look completely bad ass with our orange helmets.

As for the uniforms we would wear all the time im not sure what would look good. Im not exactly an artistic person, I just hope Nike knocks it out of the park on this one.

Man, I'm actually mad they can't make this happen for the 2013 season. Specifically, I'm tired of seeing the all white unis out there. I remember a "few" years back when we had the orange ones, and the orange pants with brown uni? I'm assuming we possible may come up with an alternative logo as well? Bring back the elf?

Gawd... Here we go. Hopefully, we won't let Nike make us look like circus clowns (a la Oregon or Seattle).

That may have been the one I saw. I thought it was all orange though.

The one I saw was really awesome looking. It could have been the same one though.

I thought that this was kind of interesting. Grossi asked the players about new uniforms, and only one guy came out in strong support of the current uniforms. Evidently Josh Cooper is a fan of the all white look.

http://espncleveland.com/common/more.php?m=49&post_id=7881

Survey says: Everyone knows changes are coming to the Browns as new owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner settle in. Big changes and little changes. Where does a uniform change fit in?

Look at it this way: The two most visible aspects of an NFL team are the way it plays and the way it’s dressed. Haslam and Banner vow to change the way the Browns play. We know that will take time. But they can change the way they dress starting in 2013.

Over the last few weeks, I have polled the Browns locker room. I queried 13 players, just about 25 percent of the roster. It was a representative sampling of old (six) and young (seven), offense (six) and defense (seven), black (nine) and white (four). I can tell you the vast majority favor a uniform change. It was almost unanimous.

They are respectful of the Browns’ venerable tradition and Cleveland’s fight in 1996 to keep the Browns’ name and colors. To a man, they are fine with the orange and brown colors and plain orange helmets, though two players (Ray Ventrone and Josh Gordon) would not be opposed to a logo on the helmet.

Only one player positively adored the all-white look (Josh Cooper), though he also gave a thumbs-up to the brown pants last used in 2009.

No player suggested that changing uniforms would change the team’s fortunes on the field. But the general sentiment was that change is good and the drab sameness of the Browns’ uniforms is somewhat deflating. They want a few more options than all-white or brown-on-white. And they agree that a change in uniforms would aptly signify the change in direction – the jolt of energy -- brought by Haslam.

“I think it’s a new generation of football,” said safety T.J. Ward. “Especially with us being one of the youngest teams, I think the consensus is we kind of all want something fresh, a new look. There’s nothing wrong with keeping the same look, but maybe an alternate or a change-up. But we still have to play football.”

Roll call: We’ll start with Phil Dawson, the only player who has been with the Browns every year since their rebirth in 1999. Dawson has a greater sense of Browns history than any player in the locker room and even he sees the merit in tweaking the uniform scheme.

Dawson: “I look at a lot of pictures of Browns history and I see all kinds of different uniforms. So why is it now the actual ones we’re wearing we can’t change? I don’t get it. I’ve seen brown on orange. I’ve seen white on orange. The one constant is the helmet, but way, way back they wore white. There have been changes to the uniform throughout Browns history.

“You can probably make a pretty good argument that this city fought so hard to keep its colors when the team left and came back, that some of that (tradition) sentiment is a product of that. So obviously it’s going to be a delicate situation. And I’m certainly not going to be upset if no change is made. (But) guys grumble a little bit. The years we wore throwbacks, there was very little change (to what we wear now).”

John Hughes: “Change is always good. I guess the Browns have been very traditional since they’ve been here. But it would be cool to have new jerseys. It would be a change.”

L.J. Fort: “I’ve seen some of those NIKE (mock-ups). Those were pretty neat. I don’t have a particular preference. I wouldn’t be against it. It would be cool. But at the same time, it’s Cleveland, and they like tradition and the old-school.”

Ben Watson: “I play football. If they told us to go out there in purple and green, then I’d go out there in purple and green. That’s not my concern. I’ve been on some teams where new clothes were bad and they never wore them again because you lost wearing them, and I’ve been on teams where new clothes were good and they kept wearing them. Clothes don’t make the team.”

Joe Haden: “I’m all for it. I’m a fashion dude, so anything that could bring another spark would be really sweet. Whatever Haslam wants to do, I’m gonna ride with it. I just think it would be sweet to have new jerseys. Just something different because I think we’re growing something new here. We have a lot of young players, lot of new faces. It would be something. It would be nice.

“You look good, you feel good, you play good. So I think new jerseys would be so sweet. Everybody’s definitely down for it. Because we talk about it all the time. The Seahawks jerseys are so ‘sick.’ The 49ers jerseys. That would be ‘sick’ if we had something else.”

Ward: “I’m all for it. I don’t think we should change it completely, but I think a few alterations would be cool. You’ve got to change some things up. I know a lot of people are big on tradition here and keeping it the same. But I think maybe a new look would freshen a lot of things up.”

Cooper: “I like the plain look. I like the all-white. I’d like to wear the brown pants. That would be sweet. I’ve seen them.”

Ventrone: “Sometimes I like the traditional look, but there are other times I think you almost need to change … change an identity. Times have changed. Look at all these college teams. Young guys are into that kind of stuff. I think guys actually like our uniforms even though they might not be (the jazziest). But at the same time, there’s a lot of young guys on our team and I feel a lot of people – fans, etc. – they want to see new stuff.”

Gordon: “As much as you can do with brown and orange, I’m sure you can always use a little upgrade. You definitely do (feel energy from new uniforms). That’s how colleges recruit. They get a lot of young guys because of their uniforms.

“If they did (change), I’d be all for it. The all whites get a little dirty, a little dingy. I think it’s the best combo that we have. If we did get a new design, I’d be happy to vote for it. You look good, you feel good, you play good. That would be another attraction to come watch the game.”

Joe Thomas: “I don’t know. I haven’t thought about it. I don’t know what they’d change it to. It’s been brown forever. I’d be open to seeing what it looks like. It’s hard to say what my opinion is without seeing what they’d change it to.”

Josh Cribbs: “Oh, definitely. I say that from the rooftop. I hate the same old things. It’s no fun at all. It’s tradition, of what? We’re a different team. We should have different uniforms, or at least different variety. It would spark us, make us feel more amped. Marketing. Makes people buy the jerseys and want to root for your team. I’ll believe it when it happens. Any change is good for this program.”

Alex Smith: “I wouldn’t be opposed to it. I’m definitely a fan of change and trying something different. Of course, it’s tradition-driven uniform … but last year was miserable just doing that all-white. But to have different options. You can always bring (all-white) back as throwbacks.”

Eric Hagg: “I like the uniforms. I like brown better than white, just in general. It would be cool (to change). Any good change is good. I don’t really believe you have to do a certain thing every time.”

I have to admit that I kinda like the orange socks with the orange and brown shoes.

I might be open to a uniform where there is a shoulder striping similar to those, that continues down the sides of the uniform shirt (over the shoulder, to under the arms, and down the sides) into a similar striping on the pants.

Any dark orange jersey like that would need either white numbers, or a wide white piping around the numbers so they can be read.

I actually would not mind seeing a light gray worked into the color scheme.

I do like the block outlined numbers that were used on the orange jerseys we had a few years back.

I also like the darker orange like we used to wear ..... and might even like a darker, more vibrant orange.

I agree with everything you said, especially with the color change regarding the jersey numbers. Like I said, this was just something I stumbled across.

Not directed at you but more of a general statement:

As for the whole "fear of change" argument I've heard on radio and elsewhere, the Browns tradition for the last few decades has been losing. Every team goes through some changes and as long as they keep the spirit of Cleveland alive, I'm happy with whatever changes they want to make if they appeal to the new generation of players and more importantly if we win. If we win, trot them out there in pink tutus for all I care, because the only thing that matters is winning and that's the main thing our franchise has been lacking for a long time.

73 - 151 since our return. We've got to right the ship and I'm of the mind that while a new uniform may not be the answer, it can be a symbol of the new - hopefully successful - era of the Browns.

Anything that creates a "break" from the losing tradition we've established over the past 14 years is fine by me. If a new uniform gets the players 1% more excited about getting out there on gameday, well, that's an extra 1% we didn't have before.

I am a little disappointed to hear that we won't get cheerleaders. I was hoping that I might be able to make it to a game sometime after the dome is built to see the cheerleaders live ......

I am hoping for something outside of the box. If we are going to change things up then be the first to do it. I dont want a slight subtle change, step out and do something drastic first. The winds of change continue to blow into the Cleveland. Its just too bad we wont have them for year one of the new regime.

If we were to change the unis, there are a couple of concepts I like that wouldn't be extremely drastic but would freshen up the look.

First, and I know this goes against the whole "don't touch the helmet" rule, I would put numbers on the sides of the helmet in either brown or white in the font that Alabama uses. I would also like there to be only a single white stripe down the middle of the helmet instead of our current brown-white-brown stripe scheme.

Secondly, the uniform. Northwestern has a concept I absolutely love. They dropped their shoulder stripes and have a sweet horizontal stripe on the middle of the jersey.

http://www.sippinonpurple.com/2012/7/26/...re-here-stripey

I think their away unis are damn near perfect. I would envision keeping the white pants and using a brown stripe on the whites and a white stripe on the browns.

Like I said, it would freshen up the look, but wouldn't be overly radical or tacky like an Oregon or Seattle uniform.

I think our current orange is too bright. I would like a darker orange. Less old Tampa Bucs orange.

I like the uni's in Joker's link. I love 1,2,4 with 2 being my favorite. I have always loved the white jerseys with orange pants from back in the Kardiac Kids days.

Unsure about uni 3 and 5. Don't hate them but bot sure that I love them either. But they are growing on me.

I am extremely sensitive about the colors and do not want them changed.. I'm less sensitive about the bland uniforms.. keep the helmets and jazz up the rest... not that J&J asked me, but if they could shoot me an e-mail with the mock ups, I'd be glad to offer an opinion.

Dunno if I want new uniforms because I want new uniforms or if I want to just see the guy who thinks we should run the ball 3 times and punt, keep everything the way it was in 1873, draft an offensive lineman with every pick, and always hand the ball to the ref, get all hot and bothered because some change comes.

But in all seriousness, I am open to change, and guess what? If it looks bad, you can always go back to the original uniforms. There is no law that says you can't ever wear the old ones ever again.

#3 has me aroused. #5 is awesome too.

I kinda like the idea of having a matte Orange helmet, as an alternate uni combo. Yes, I know its a college fad....but who cares. It would look sick.

And I still like an All-Brown jersey/pants combo.

In general, any updates would be welcome (as long as they're not changing the stripes order).

Nothing about a uni change links to more winning.

It's just fun.

+1 - I like you're thinking!

Drafting explosive talent or signing important free agents, lame. just change the uniforms. Instant Super Bowl!

If we're going to change it, let's change it and bring it into the 21st century. I've been a fan for a long time and have been a hold-out for keeping the traditional uniforms, but frankly, I'm sick of the losing culture. The lack of a championship since the early 60's is ridiculous so I'm all in for change. Maybe a new look will help.

I like the white on white. I also like the brown on brown, but possibly a darker brown like a deep chocolate, with possibly thinner lines, and possibly some subtle neon orange highlights. This is sort of the look, but darker, with thinner lines and without the Quinn:

Also, I don't get the need to stick with the helmet. Like I said, if we're going to change, let's change. Keep the old helmet as a throwback. I like the idea of a metallic, burnt orange helmet. Like this only darker:

More like this but maybe even a little darker:
