Sounds like the honeymoon is over...............

Make the fans feel positive with Chud and Norv in order to force feed us Lombardi.

I sure hope with his poor drafting track record they can continue to draft enough talent to help Chud and Norv succeed. His track record would indicate otherwise.....

so we won't "technically" have a GM?

nvm.. i see he's the GM now.

the thing is this... Chud will have a say in who we draft.. as well as Haslam/Banner... Our selections will be a "team" pick... not just based on what Lombardi wants

Wow. Way to stick to your guns, J & J.

First, it leaked out as a rumor like 100 years ago. Good job there!

Second, you had to know from fan & media reaction that it was FAR from a popular idea.

Hoping for the best, but this move still just angers me...

I think I might have to take a board hiatus for a while, lol. The doom and gloomers are going to be out in force.

Unfortunately, from the guy's track record, it seems the doom and gloomers might be right! lol

As with everything, I'll wait to see what the result is. But, from the little I know of him from what I've read, this doesn't exactly instill confidence.

Between this board & the countless people, backers clubs, & communities I've befriended on Facebook, I bet I don't see ONE positive comment about this.

Are there ANY positives with Lombardi? Why would the Browns hire him if not?

Funny thing, this was the one move that people were screaming about well before this hire was made.

Funny how most seemed to be very favorable of both the Chud and Norv hirings. Yet are upset with this one.

Maybe you should understand we supported the moves we feel should be supported and don't support the moves we don't feel should be supported.

Seems like a pretty basic concept to me.....

So the GM of the team is just in the "every move" category? Sorry, but if you don't see the GM, HC, OC and DC as the "major moves", I'm not quite sure how you percieve the structure of an NFL team.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Former Browns personnel executive Mike Lombardi has been hired as the team's Vice President of Player Personnel, the club announced this morning.

The team will have a press conference at 11:30 a.m. today.

Lombardi worked with Browns CEO Joe Banner in Philadelphia, helping him run the draft in 1997 and serving as Director of Pro Personnel in 1998. Banner regarded Lombardi as one of the smartest personnel executives he's ever worked with. The two have remained in close contact.

Lombardi has also worked with the 49ers, Raiders and Rams.

In Cleveland, where he worked from 1987 to 1995, he was Bill Belichick's righthand man and helped him ruin his drafts, negotiate contracts and acquire free agents.

There! Fixed it!

And the next head coach is ......

OK,, you guys know, I'm a glass half full kinda guy..

My Freakin glass is EMPTY... and when mine is empty,,, Oh Brother.

The Good: Lombardi has the title, but we've been told that Chud will have the final say.

The Bad: Lombardi will have some say

The Ugly: Lombardi is a political animal, my fear is he'll weasel more power out of J&J.

To say I'm discouraged is an understatement. I just think that heckert was Head and Shoulders above this guy.

OK,, so they couldn't get Heckert to stay maybe.. Dunno. But the least they could have done is not do more harm. Lombardi to me is "MORE HARM"

I wanna be wrong,, I really do, but I don't think I am.

Unreal.

Here is the guy who said the Browns wasted the pick on Josh Gordon.

Absolutely no redemption in this move. He has been a yes man all of his career.

I have stated in more than one post the Browns would not hire a true General Manager.

Banner fires Tom Heckert and replaces him with Lombardi. This goes hand in glove with Brandon Weeden instead of Griffin.

This trash trail leads to the doorstep of Jimmy Haslam. You hire Banner as your lead dog and this is where he goes.

The Browns really know how to test the support of their fans.

This was a done deal a long time ago. I knew it when I saw the look on Lombardi's face when Phil Simms and the crew from Inside the NFL gave Lombardi all the Browns gear at the mock Christmas party.

I am disgusted.

I heard him say he's learned from his mistakes... or Banner is really juking Haslam.. Or the Rooneys set this all up by helping Haslam buy this team...so they can destroy it permanently.... because this feels like 1999

Then on the other hand this may work out just fine..

Or maybe you just need to work on your reading comprehension a little bit more. "8 months" and using the present tense "makes" indicate the future. You know...things that have yet to happen? So yeah, hiring Mike Lombardi is going to result in Browns fans and media complaining about every move the front office makes. Not moves that they made in the past, before hiring Lombardi, which is, obviously, when they hired the HC and OC.

So if they hire an excellent candidate for the DC position the fans and media are going to hate the idea because they hired Lombardi?

Oh yeah, that makes so much more sense!

Probably. "This guy can't be a good pick...Lombardi hired him."

I didn't say it would be rational or well-founded. Whining by sports fans often isn't.

Thing is... Lombardi has a history in the league and it isn't pretty. Even if you've only seen his commentary on the NFL Channel or nfl.com, it is clear he is a lightweight and not particularly good at what he does. IMO, there is absolutely nothing in his past to indicate that this is a good hire.

OK .... I wonder if we're still going to have a GM or not?

I am extremely unhappy with Lombardi having anything even remotely resembling final word on any player.

Now if Lombardi is "on the depth chart", under a real GM .... then I could .... somehow ....... be OK with this. If he is the defacto GM ...... then BLEH!

Yeah, this is the problem I'm having, too.

However, Terry Pluto nailed it. He said he's willing to give the guy the "chance to fail." I generally take a wait and see approach. Yes, his history is pretty poor. However, maybe he's changed. Only time will tell.

Doesn't mean we have to be happy about it, though.

That's the problem with Lombardi, he has already been in this position with more than one team and the results have always been bad. Some might even describe it as terrible, which I would have a hard time argueing that point.

Once a guy has a pretty long standing track record, I don't see it being logical to expect everyone to simply ignore it. Many of us remember well how poorly the draft went here with Lombardi on board and his track record since hasn't been any better to speak of.

But yeah, I guess we could simply ignore all of that...

Can't stand him....

So we let go of Heckert who has had 3 pretty decent if not good drafts.... to pick up a guy who every time he opens his mouth I have trouble believing he has ever worked in the NFL....

dear Lord I hope chud, Norv, and who ever they bring in as a DC have major voting rights on player personell... I HATE this move... hate, hate, hate.....

Kind of the approach I'm taking. Not saying I like the hire, but doesn't do any good to get too worked up about it.

Here's how I see it.. the Browns will be improved next year because our young guys will have one more year of experience and because I think Chud/Norv will get a lot more out of the talent we already have then Pat did. So we are going to win more games and look better next year regardless of what else happens... the real results of this move will be felt a couple of years later as players contracts may or may not be renewed and as draft picks are expected to contribute... so I think, much like most presidents, Lombardi will get an initial bump in his approval rating because, outside of anything he does, the Browns will look better... then we will see what happens from there... all Lombardi has to do... all he has to do, is pick one solid contributor with the #6 pick in the draft.. that's it. (regardless of who ultimately writes the name on the card) If he can do that one time, he will start his tenure here on a positive note.... If the 3rd round pick and beyond aren't stellar right away, he'll get some latitude because 3rd round guys often don't have big impacts as rookies...

Make one pick.. that's all he has to do.
