Seems well regarded. Excited about HC and both co-ordinator hires but the Lombardo hire and perception around it is taking the edge off it somewhat. Looks like we have some quality bread but a load of crap in the middle......
That doesn't bother me as much as it did 3-4 years ago, as most 3-4/4-3 are now some type of hybrid anyway. Whatever the D, they better start preparing to stop the speed offenses that will be coming our way.

Damage control? I think the Browns have put together a very solid coaching staff and people still want to B. Lombardi won't be making any draft picks. He will be a glorified right hand man to Banner and nobody here really knows how well Banner will do. Give everyone a chance.
Good coordinator. I'll be curious to see what he does with the personnel we have. We don't have the horses for a base 3-4 defense, but I'm not sure that's his deal. Hopefully, we aren't looking at a rebuild of our front seven.

Great hire. Arizona's defense carried that team to a 8-8 record the second half of 2011. Horton reminds me of Chudzinski, only on the defensive side of the ball. He adapts his strategy to fit the players he has on his roster.
Hopefully he can make D'Qwell Jackson into his new Daryl Washington. As an inside linebacker in a 3-4 hybrid defense Washington had 9 sacks and was a force to be reckoned with at only 6'2" 230 pounds.
We now have one of the best offensive coordinators in the league and one of the best defensive coordinators in the league.
Quote: The Browns have named Ray Horton their defensive coordinator, the team announced this evening.
Horton spent the past two seasons as the defensive coordinator of the Arizona Cardinals and employed a 3-4 system. Horton, 52, replaces Dick Jauron, who guided the Browns’ 4-3 defense the past two seasons.
“We are truly excited that we were able to get someone of Ray’s caliber as our defensive coordinator,” Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said in a statement. “He possesses a great deal of experience as a player, position coach and coordinator in the NFL and has been part of some of the top defenses in the league throughout his career. He is an extremely talented coach, and I know that he will work very well with the young nucleus of players we have on defense.”
Horton interviewed with owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner for the Browns’ head-coaching position, which was ultimately filled by Chudzinski, on Jan. 1 in Arizona. He also interviewed with the Cardinals, but they hired Bruce Arians instead.
In Horton’s two seasons with the Cardinals, the defense ranked 12th (337.8 yards allowed per game) in 2012 and tied for 18th (355.1) in 2011.
Haslam bought a minority stake in the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2008, so he should be familiar with Horton, who was a defensive backs coach for the Steelers from 2004-10. The Steelers finished with a top-10 defense in each of Horton’s seven seasons with the team.
Horton played defensive back in the NFL from 1983-92. The Cincinnati Bengals selected him in the second round (53rd overall) of the 1983 NFL Draft. He also played for the Dallas Cowboys, winning Super Bowl XXVII in the final game of his career.
So with Horton aboard, Chudzinski’s coaching staff is taking form. The Browns named former San Diego Chargers coach Norv Turner their offensive coordinator on Thursday.
“As we’ve said before, an important factor in hiring Rob was our confidence in him being able to put together a top-quality staff,” Banner said in a statement. “He has assembled an extremely impressive group of coaches, and that will be very beneficial as we develop our players.”
The Browns still have openings for the following position coaches: quarterbacks, running backs, tight ends, defensive line, linebackers and defensive backs. They also have vacancies for quality control and senior assistant positions.
I'm not complaining about the hire (other than it's a switch away from the strengths of our defensive personnel) I was saying the timing of the Lombardi announcement then the Horton announcement was orchestrated to wash the bad lombardi taste out of our mouths.
Also saw a story (on youtube) about Ray 'selling' his car for $20 to a cafeteria worker on his last day at the Steelers... apparently the worker and he would joke around each day about the worker doing more coaching than Ray and that he should be driving his car. So on his last day Ray asked to borrow some money, when the worker pulled out a 20 Ray told him he just bought himself a new Mercedes...
Well Ray would be a real good hire, IF WE RAN A 3-4 or had 3-4 talent. But we do not. I wonder if the Browns even asked him what we will run? Or is he one of these, "I can only coach a 3-4". Crap.. just great!
The Browns have already said repeatedly that they will run a hybrid.
The Browns have the same holes at defense before and after this hire. But now they have a better coordinator than the play safe defense we played under DJ.
If only we had guys to get him the right talent...

Didn't Chud say in his presser after he got hired that he would prefer to run a Hybrid D? Both 3-4 and 4-3 in the mix? I honestly wouldn't overreact about any D# adjustments that we make from here on. It's not at the snap of a finger we'll be a 3-4 specific D.
Honestly, I love the fact that we got the coaching lineup in Chud as HC, Norv as OC and Ray Horton as DC. All 3 have sharp minds and they'll surely coach up the players we got. What is it that they say in The Lion King?
They "fell" to 2nd overall in pass defense after being best most of the season (again, this is efficiency).
Rush defense they were only 16th, which is part of the gamble you take with his aggressive style.
Oh, and important note: they had the most difficult schedule to face according to these rankings as well. so, they did this well despite facing the toughest schedule for a defense to face.
Browns rank:
20th in pass defense 18th in rush defense 22nd overall defense
Quote: It'd be nice if Kerry Rhodes followed his Former DC here with him...
if Sheard is on the trade block, then trading him for Acho and Groves wouldn't be the worst idea either (for either team if AZ is switching to the 4-3 under Bowles)
Come on Steve. Over the years I have know you as a reasonable guy and one who knows football pretty well.
Don't fall in to the Lombardi trap. He isn't that bad and he won't have as much sway as you think.
Unlike Randy, Jimmy is involved, and Jimmy is a pretty big college football fan, so he knows something about it . Not to mention he is a business man in the service industry, so his ear is on customer feedback, unlike a banker who just wants to collect the money.
In the end Jimmy Haslam is going to drive drafts, and if those who's word he is trusting prove to be false, they are out in a heartbeat. In business it is all about results. Is it a profit center or a drain on the business?
I am 100% in here.
I don't know Jimmy Haslam (yet, I will in time), but I know some who do, and to a person they talk about his drive.
He is 100% in as owner of the Browns.....we've needed that for a long time. Owner's mean a lot.
For some it's return only. Others is it is winning to achieve return.
Jimmy want's to win.
If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.
I like the Head Coach hire, I love the Offensive cord hire, I love the D-cord hire but none of this will matter because of our GM Hire Mike could screw up a wet dream and he will. Every tiny bit of hope I had just went out the window with this idiots hire as our GM
Exciting news! Im not ready to write this all off because of Lombardi. I believe if he starts to fail Haslam will replace him. He wants to win bad, and its showing.
Quote: I believe if he starts to fail Haslam will replace him. He wants to win bad, and its showing.
If Haslam wanted to win that bad, he would have found a way to keep Heckert. We'll be lucky to win over 5 games per season over the next 3 years. My only hope is that Haslam realizes what a giant mistake he has made and cleans house at the end of next year. Don't kid yourselves, this is going to be bad.

So, you're saying that the more things change (new owner, CEO, VP of PP, HC, OC, DC, etc.); the more they stay the same (4 or 5 wins)?
I think you've got to take a step back from the precipice and take a breath and recollect your thoughts.

Picture the Browns roster in three years.
Now picture it after the three worst drafts in the history of the Cleveland Browns.
Quote: Ill wait until after this off season to hng myself. Y'all are painting a pretty grim picture.
I am not painting a picture that is grim enough. This weasel makes Akron Joe look like Vince Lombardi . He has no clue. If he was on fire I wouldn't even waste my pee on him to put out the fire.
Quote: If only we had guys to get him the right talent
That is the 1 million dollar question. And what are you getting, 3-4 talent which would take a minimum of 2 years to draft or 4-3 talent, which are are almost fully at right now! That is why I'm not happy. Yes, Ray Horton has been a good D coordinator but with 3-4 teams. SO now we have to REBUILD to another 3-4 system that will take 2 years minimum to build? Please, I seen this crappy movie before. Right now, we do not have 3-4 LBs. We have 4-3 linemen and backers.
And again, a unproven GM who is suppose to be getting talent!!.. Just great!!
