Browns' QBs face learning system

New offensive coordinator has new playbook, terms, line calls
By Patrick McManamon
Beacon Journal sportswriter

PHOENIX - The learning curve gets no easier for the Browns' young quarterbacks this offseason.

One of the team's main decisions after the disappointment of a 4-12 finish in 2006 was to revamp the offensive coaching staff. Interim coordinator Jeff Davidson was not retained. Rob Chudzinski was hired to replace him, and new coaches were hired for the running backs, receivers, tight ends and offensive line.

With the change comes a new system.

A completely new system.

``That's right; we're doing it all,'' coach Romeo Crennel said at the coaches' breakfast at the NFL's annual spring meeting.

That means that quarterbacks Charlie Frye and Derek Anderson will have to learn new terminology, new plays and new line calls. Chudzinski is still putting together the new playbook, Crennel said.

For Frye and Anderson, it's an offseason of adjustment -- something that's not unusual in the NFL but is challenging.

``That's part of football,'' Crennel said. ``You have to learn.''

The departure of Davidson as coordinator was a bit of a surprise. He had been hired by Crennel when Crennel joined the Browns, and he was considered bright enough to be a coordinator candidate with the New England Patriots in 2005 as well as with the Browns this offseason.

Davidson moved from offensive line coach to coordinator midway through last season when Maurice Carthon was fired, but he did not last long into the offseason.

``In this business, a lot of things happen,'' Crennel said. ``Sometimes there's no rhyme or reason for why they happen.''

Davidson could have stayed as a staff assistant, but Crennel did not specify what position he would have coached. ``It would not have been as coordinator,'' Crennel said.

Davidson's acceptance of the offer to be the Carolina Panthers' offensive coordinator, then, does not seem too difficult a decision.

``That lets you know that some people see him with the same kind of potential that we thought he had,'' Crennel said. ``He chose to go elsewhere. We wish him the best of luck.

``I can only work with the guys on the staff now.''

Many in the league think that most of the hirings and firings were the decision of Browns General Manager Phil Savage, but Crennel said he and Savage together made the decisions.

Said Crennel: ``I was in on every interview, and I made the recommendation to hire everybody we hired.''

Chudzinski's offense

Chudzinski spent a year with the Browns in 2004 and was heavily involved in offensive planning with then-coordinator Terry Robiskie.

Owner Randy Lerner described Chudzinski as an up-and-coming coach in the NFL ranks. ``I think, reasonably speaking, we were pretty excited that he chose to come with the Browns,'' Lerner said.

Crennel described Chudzinski's new offense as ``attacking'' -- one that looks to be balanced but also looks for mismatches.

``I think you'll see multiple personnel, multiple formations, and then try to take advantage of matchups,'' Crennel said. ``With tight ends on linebackers, with Kellen (Winslow) matched up in some situations where we can try to give him an advantage that way.''

Crennel was pretty definitive that he expects Winslow to be back this season. He said Winslow's recovery from microfracture surgery is on track, and the tight end should definitely be back by training camp, if not for the team's June minicamp.

Winslow tied a team record for receptions in 2006, but he could benefit greatly from the coordinator switch. Chudzinski was Winslow's coordinator at the University of Miami when Winslow last played there in 2003.

Chudzinski ``brings a high-scoring offense from when he was a coordinator in college,'' Crennel said. ``He was with a high-scoring offense recently (with the San Diego Chargers). Hopefully we can get some of that scoring on the Browns.

``I know that he had different personnel and all that, but some of coaching is seeing what you have and trying to maximize their abilities.''

Quarterback decisions

Crennel reiterated what Savage had said about the team's quarterbacks: Barring a major surprise or the drafting of JaMarcus Russell or Brady Quinn, the Browns will go with Frye and Anderson competing for the starting spot.

Logic might dictate that if the team's offense is being completely redone, now is the best time to bring in a new quarterback. The thinking: If everyone is learning at once, they might as well start anew if the option is there.

``That's a possibility,'' Crennel said. ``Everything is a possibility. I'm not ruling anything out.''

Except that rookie quarterbacks often struggle, and a coach who might be on the hot seat might not have the time to develop a rookie quarterback.

Crennel shrugged off the notion that the perception he might be a ``lame duck'' will hamper his ability to coach, or will add pressure.

``I have the respect of the players,'' he said. ``I think those guys are going to play hard for me. They're going to do their best for me; I'm going to do my best for them. We'll let the chips fall where they may.

``There are no guarantees in this business.''

Another article on the coaching staff:

NFL OWNERS MEETINGS NOTES

Crennel floating along despite lame-duck talk

Wednesday, March 28, 2007
Tony Grossi
Plain Dealer Reporter

Phoenix -- If you want to label Romeo Crennel a lame duck coach -- in charge of the Browns for possibly the last year -- the conjecture runs easily off his back.

Attending his third NFL owners meetings, Crennel floats through the corridors of the Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired Arizona Biltmore Resort as affably as ever.

It is a perk of the head coach job to attend these annual meetings; assistant coaches are not welcome. Crennel seems to enjoy them much more than his former mentors, Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick, who

All around him, league insiders whisper Crennel had little or no say-so in the remake of "his" coaching staff and that defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, who shares the same agent as General Manager Phil Savage, has gained influence on personnel matters.

Crennel, 10-22 in two seasons as Browns coach, shrugs off the perception he is under fire to keep his job.

"I feel the same way I did when I first took the job. I have to win," Crennel said at a breakfast reception for AFC coaches. "There was pressure from the first day and there will be pressure as long as I have the job. Even though progress has been made, you have to make progress in the win column. All coaches know that."

He said the common perception that he is a lame duck does not make his job tougher.

"I have the respect of the players," he said. "I think those guys are going to play hard for me. They're going to do their best for me, I'm going to do my best for them. We'll let the chips fall where they may."

Crennel responded to other team issues as he embarks on his third season:

His coaching staff: Ten assistant positions were changed. Some coaches close to Crennel -- Jeff Davidson, assistant head coach; John Lott, strength coach; and Carl Crennel, his nephew and a quality control coach -- were fired or left on their own. A fourth, running back coach Dave Atkins, was reassigned. Many of the new hires have no previous association with Crennel.

"Phil and I, we talked about restructuring the offense and that's what we ended up doing," Crennel said. "I was in on every interview, and I made the recommendation to hire everybody we hired."

Offensive coordinator: Many assumed Davidson would continue in the role after succeeding Maurice Carthon the last 10 games. But he left for Carolina after the Browns hired Rob Chudzinski. Davidson opted not to return as a position coach.

"In this business, a lot of things happen," Crennel said. "Sometimes there's no rhyme or reason for why they happen. Ultimately we decided to revamp the offense and as a result of that he ended up with another coordinator's job."

Chudzinski's offensive philosophy: "I think he has an attacking style, wants to try to provide balance and look for matchups. I think you'll see multiple personnel, multiple formations and then try to take advantage of matchups," he said.

Chudzinski is in the process of rewriting the entire playbook. "It's his offense. That's right. We're doing it all," Crennel said.

Kellen Winslow Jr.: Crennel expects Winslow to be back from off-season microfracture knee surgery by training camp and possibly for June minicamp.

"Will he ever have a healthy knee? I don't know that," Crennel said. "But if he can get to the point where the knee doesn't cause him pain, then he might catch 90 balls [a year]."

Braylon Edwards: "I still believe that Braylon is going to be a good player for the Browns and he's going to be good for the community because he's not a bad kid," Crennel said. "That's going to show. He's already in the off-season program. He could have gone to Hawaii because he's the alternate player rep for the team. He chose to stay and start the off-season program. That in itself is a sign to me that maybe he's beginning to grow a little bit and understand his role and what's going to be expected of him.

"I told him, Braylon what you need to do is concentrate on football and just play football. Everything else will take care of itself.' I think that he understands that's what he needs to do."

Eric Steinbach as a candidate at left tackle: "I don't know. Steinbach played [it] in our game [against the Bengals] and he played against [Kamerion] Wimbley, who was a rookie. And he did good against Wimbley. If you put him against Dwight Freeney, you don't know what's going to happen. You get the best rushers over there. We'll have to see how the guy holds up."

The quarterback competition: "Charlie [Frye] has a leg up and [Derek] Anderson is intriguing and we'll give them a shot and see how they do."

Thanks for the read.

Nothing really new, but that's the time of year.
Lots of obvious sound bites like ``I think you'll see multiple personnel, multiple formations, and then try to take advantage of matchups''. I think that's a standard quote that describes ANY offense.

On the QB's.... I really think Charlie & Anderson are it. I don't think we're looking to draft one at all. Between Savages comments on how we will not be bringing in a free agent QB and then Lerner's inclusion of Frye at the top of his list of Core players, I think we're quite content with Charlie.

Wow, thanks for the read Shark,,,, Good one!

A very nice thing to hear is:

Quote:

Crennel described Chudzinski's new offense as ``attacking'' -- one that looks to be balanced but also looks for mismatches.

``I think you'll see multiple personnel, multiple formations, and then try to take advantage of matchups,'' Crennel said. ``With tight ends on linebackers, with Kellen (Winslow) matched up in some situations where we can try to give him an advantage that way.''

About time

And then this:

Quote:

Crennel was pretty definitive that he expects Winslow to be back this season. He said Winslow's recovery from microfracture surgery is on track, and the tight end should definitely be back by training camp, if not for the team's June minicamp.

Love hear that

But this is just STUPID:

Quote:

Except that rookie quarterbacks often struggle, and a coach who might be on the hot seat might not have the time to develop a rookie quarterback

I've never understood the concept of being on the "hot seat"! I mean, why bother,,, if a person is on the hot seat,, then just do the deed,,, Fire them and get it over with.. don't waste another minute of time... Get r done!

Just my Opinion, but I think that both Savage and Lerner are smart enough to know that if a person is percieved to be on the hot seat within the organization then it's time for him to go,,, perceptions outside the organization are meaningless really... but inside,,, if he's considered to have "lame duck" status, then cut the cord... time's a wastin!

And RACs response:

Quote:

Crennel shrugged off the notion that the perception he might be a ``lame duck'' will hamper his ability to coach, or will add pressure.

``I have the respect of the players,'' he said. ``I think those guys are going to play hard for me. They're going to do their best for me; I'm going to do my best for them. We'll let the chips fall where they may.

``There are no guarantees in this business.''

Perfect in my eyes..... just plain the right answer and the right point of view!

Agree....I think with revamping the line were gonna give Charlie & Derrick a chance to fight it out in training camp.

I do believe we do one of three things,

1. Draft A. Peterson with # 3
2. Draft J.Thomas with # 3
3. Trade down and aquire picks.....

I do believe those are our valid options anything other than that were just looking for nuts up a squirrels behind.

If the Browns are interested in drafting a QB, they would want to look like they have no interested at all...

Phil is very good with the smoke, did anyone see Wimbley coming?

This makes sense unless RAC is truly in a WIN NOW situation, which many think he is. And understandably so. But that brings us back to the question: Does drafting Quinn or Russell buy RAC more time? In the Lerner interviews I read, he indicated something to the effect of a 5-year plan to get the number of players that it would take to be successful. And he stressed continuity. RAC, in my mind, should be part of that plan. I still think we're leaning toward Thomas (notice: still no mention of him ANYWHERE) but I would be less surprised now if they actually decided to go with a QB.

Not to toot my own horn, but about 2 weeks before the draft last year, I created a thread called 'Wimbley vs. Ngata' on here because I had read somewhere that Phil went down to watch Wimbley work out at FSU along with Broderick Bunkley and everyone on here thought I was insane for insinuating that we'd take Wimbley over Ngata.

Sounds like he's not sure why Davidson wasn't allowed to remain. As do the following:

Quote:

Davidson's acceptance of the offer to be the Carolina Panthers' offensive coordinator, then, does not seem too difficult a decision.

``That lets you know that some people see him with the same kind of potential that we thought he had,'' Crennel said.

Then again, he talks of this potential and maintains that had Davidson stayed, he

Quote:

did not specify what position he would have coached. ``It would not have been as coordinator,'' Crennel said.

Am I reading too much into this?

If Frye is being shopped 'behind the scenes', why do we all know about it? Ummm, maybe to make everyone think we're going to draft a QB. Hmmmm.... C'mon Attack, you know better.

Yes, you are reading way too much into it.. It was a press conference. RAC is a smart man, he's not going to throw Davidson or any of his former coaches under a bus in public.. That's not only rude but just immature and rather stupid.

Think about it, if Davidson is really as good as RAC and others thought he was, doesn't it follow that someday he'd be a head coach and in a position to hire RAC as a DC or Asst. Head Coach or as a consultant... Nobody in the business wants to burn bridges...

Attack, Attack, Attack...

You HONESTLY believe Savage was actively shopping Frye? Furthermore, you actually believe an article from those ONB clowns? The article that made a stink and vanished in about a day? Coincidence? I think not...

The author of that article, John Taylor...ever researched his opinion of Frye?
It's a real possibility Frye stole his girlfriend....

Now, I don't doubt Frye's name came up in the myriad of discussions Savage has had with GMs and FO personnel from various teams, but I doubt Savage brought him up. IIRC, didn't the article assert Savage offered Frye to Detroit for Dre Bly?

You really think Savage, the ultimate Draft Smoker, is gonna call the guy drafting ahead of him and virtually say, "You want Charlie Frye because I'm going to draft Brady Quinn". Who knows maybe Savage did do that to completely fool Millen's dumbass...

What I got out of his comments was that these changes were not Romeo's idea.

In my remodeled office, I chose (recommended) the actual carpet and paint colors that were used (hired)...but not until someone else narrowed it down to two choices each that even I couldn't screw up.

Romeo recommened one of Phil's choices - and all choices were Phil's - and gee...What do you know?...One of those "recommended" choices got hired.

The difference is, I KNEW that I needed new carpet and paint. No one had to force that upon me.

All that said, I think Romeo handled those questions pretty darned well. He didn't really say anything (which was smart), he didn't throw anyone under the bus (which was smart), he reiterated that he has the faith of his players (which was smart...whether true or not), and he didn't come off as a total "yes-man" (which was smart).

I don't remember exactly when that became known to me ..it might have been a week or so before that article came out..but I still didn't have access to it.
I think Toad posted on Frye being shopped lately..
And when I'm told something I don't leak out that info until it's o.k to...

Back to square one again huh?

The names have been changed to protect the innocent?

Funny thing? In Charlies starts under "New" OC Davidson,he went 3-4. Anderson? 0-3. So The team was close to playing 500 ball with our "starting QB in place" under Davidson, but we start ALL OVER again.

We spend more time "emplimenting" new systems than we actually spend executing those systems. Gets a bit disheartenning IMO

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I think Chuds O will favor Anderson.

Couple that with the fact we saw that fryes arm is clearly deficient and that spells trouble for Chuck.

I think a big part is going to depend on which QB picks things up. The guy who plays the least dummied down version of the O will get the call.

No, it's not well known...more like bought into by the people who WANT to believe the rumors to be the case...

It's called selective-rumor-believy-itis...You're gonna believe what you want to believe.
If you dont like Frye or dont believe in him, those rumors are sweet music to your ears...

Now, as I stated...I'm positive Savage had trade discussions with Frye's name mentioned...but, take this to the bank...Savage didnt throw Frye out there...You can believe any source you want, but I know where I'm getting this and NOBODY gots a better source than me when it comes to this stuff...Sorry, hate to be like this, but it's more than likely true...unless one of you guys is Phil...

Sorry to burst the bubble.

Why is it we must always look for the conspiracy?

I am so confused by that!

I have no bubble to bust. I dont think it matters who the quarterback is, the Browns wont win 5 games even matched up with the NFC west where 7 games wins the division but U dont gauge interest on your starting quarterback if he is your starting quarterback.

I like Frye he is a good kid, he just aint an NFL caliber quarterback. I give a rats booty about mobility and intagibles. He has a noodle arm, no pocket presense, poor decision making, will throw off his back foot across the field and put it up for grabs. He just makes bad decisions and turns the ball over consistently. 25 turnovers to 10 tds with the #1 starting field position in football. Hell he threw more tds to the opposition than he did to the Browns receivers.

What I got out of his comments was that these changes were not Romeo's idea.

Why can't people just accept what he says,,,, He didn't say anything that would indicate that these were NOT his choices,,, He did say that he and Phil both chose these people,,, Why must it be something other than just what he said it was..

Why is it we must always look for the conspiracy?

I am so confused by that!

Where's the fun in that?
What's the point in believing the most reasonable explanation to the situation?
You must be out of your mind to think RAC had anything to do with hiring his coaching staff, he is, after all, a lame duck coach as labeled by fans and sportswriters (Grossi)...and we all know these people make decisions.

Sorry bro, but IIRC you think Anderson should start...

Thus, making anything you say in regards to the QB position null and void IMO....and remember, JMO.

Couple that with the fact we saw that fryes arm is clearly deficient and that spells trouble for Chuck.
.

Clearly deficiant? Trouble for Chuck?

Charlie Frye QB rating in a 2 WR set (meaning there's a chance we'll run or pass) 89.9 7th in the AFC

3 WR set - 74.2 (6th in the AFC)
4 WR set - 48.9 (last in the AFC -- (On obvious passing situations,he was toast. The oposing D's keyed on him through a porous OL)
Shotgun - 61.7 (Derek Anderson 62.3 - -see above comment in paranthesis)

YAC - Frye was 10th in the AFC in YAC for his WR.

Frye - 15th in the AFC in sacks/att
Anderson would be 11th in the AFC

(see the thing about no line)

Frye was tied for 9th in the AFC in % first downs passing for on 3rd down, Frye is ABOVE Carson Palmer.

Passing yards LOST due to a penalty - Frye is #2 in the AFC.

Passing on 3rd and short for first downs - Charlie Frye was 1st in the AFC. 2nd in the NFL. (Garcia was 4-5, Frye was 9-12

Frye was the 3rd most sacked QB in the NFL - 44 sacks and he played only 12.5 games.

http://stats.nypost.com/fb/index.asp

D. Anderson?
He averaged 12.015 yards per completion.
His longest pass completion? 54 yards.
Completion percentage? 56.4 %
QB rating? 63.1.

Charlie?
Averaged 9.78 yards per completion
Longest completion? 75 yards
Completion percentage? 64.1 %
QB rating? 72

Stats compiled from player stats on official site.

It's all fine and well to toss around accusations, but reality often dictates otherwise.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

Lets put stats aside..and not just Diam chimes in with his moniker
I look at how drives are maintained and what boggs down the offense..
Put aside the drops, wrong route runing ,the sacks, the penalities..what did either QB do to sustain a drive with their own intangibles, WHICH thereby SQUARELY put the blame elsewhere?

Interesting stuff Peen. If what you say is true about Chud's O favoring DA, then I think RAC had very little to do with Chud's hiring as the OC. Why? Because I think RAC feels more comfortable with Charlie in there as QB. He was especially hard on Anderson last season after the second Steeler game in Pittsburgh. From what I remember of the post-game presser, it was the closest RAC has ever come to throwing one player under the bus since he's been with the Browns. I don't know if he was just frustrated or what, but I found it very atypical of him to be so hard on his QB after a game. Frye had made plenty of bone-headed mistakes in games and RAC never called him out in a presser like that. So based on that, I feel that RAC has more confidence in Charlie and is giving him a "leg up", as he put it. If this is the case, why hire an OC who is going to install an offense that favors the back-up?

I think he is superior to Frye in almost every single aspect but that doesnt mean he is my prefered starter either lol. Now I do think he will be unless we draft one.

I said last year i would sign him to a long term deal just to keep him as that backup that knows the system and is used to throwing to these receivers. I hate the backup in and out every year. find a guy u think can be a good backup and wrap him up.

I would give up a 5th and get Trent Green in here. This way you have your starter, you have Frye and Anderson learning behind a proven vet.

If Russell would fall into our lap and Savage takes him. you have Green running the O for a year maybe even 2 as the rookie learns. Put him in a situation like Palmer and Rivers had. learning from a competent qb not a trent Dilfer lol

Attack, I'm shocked at this statement...

That's like saying...

Put aside the Gas, the Oil, the Tires and the steering wheel and how did you do driving to the store?....

And furthermore, that criteria is way way way subjective...and nobody is claiming Frye was perfect. But I think he deserves another shot to be the starting QB for the Cleveland Browns with what, on paper, looks to be a better team.
