Chicken wing shortage threatens Super Bowl Sunday

January 24, 2013
The New York Post

First it was bacon, now it's chicken wings. With less than two weeks to go before the big game, football fans may find it a bit harder to find their favorite Super Bowl snack.

The National Chicken Council released a report that said the demand for wings this year is at “an all-time high” due to decreased wing production caused by the high cost of corn and feed prices. Wings are currently the highest priced portion of a chicken and cost $2.11 a pound in the Northeast, up 12 percent from last year.

The organization has lowered the estimated number of wings to be consumed during Super Bowl weekend to 1.23 billion wing segments, 12.3 million less than last year. That's about 1 percent, says the council.

“Chicken companies produced about 1 percent fewer birds last year, due in large part to record high corn and feed prices,” Bill Roenigk, chief economist and market analyst at the Washington, D.C.-based National Chicken Council said in a release. “Corn makes up more than two-thirds of chicken feed and corn prices hit an all-time high in 2012, due to two reasons: last summer’s drought and pressure from a federal government requirement that mandates 40 percent of our corn crop be turned into fuel in the form of ethanol. Simply put, less corn equals higher feed costs, which means fewer birds produced.”

Americans are serious about their chicken wings. Second only to Thanksgiving, Super Bowl weekend is the biggest eating day of the year, and chicken wings are the most popular dish. To give you a picture of just how many wings fan will chow down on, The National Chicken Council says if those 1.23 billion chicken wing segments were laid end to end, they would stretch between the San Francisco 49ers Candlestick Park and the Baltimore Ravens M&T Bank Stadium 27 times.

This is serious - hopefully, the President will open the Strategic Chicken Wing Reserve to alleviate the shortage. We can only hope ...

I have no doubt that Big Poultry is behind this, hoping to drive the prices higher and higher until people are forced to eat hot dogs or worse when watching the SB.

Meh, pig wings are better.

I used to be a big wing eater but it's been quite a while since I ate them. Too much skin and fat and not enough meat. I found that I like the spicy wing sauce with blue cheese more than I like the wing itself....so I'll just dip breast meat in there. Same taste, better for me.

I would rather eat a chicken breast as well. There's almost nothing to a wing.

Everyone else can have the wings ..... I'll take a couple of nice breasts any day.

I like wings primarily because you have to work a little... means you eat less and can munch on wings for longer..

That's why I also like Chesapeake Bay blue crabs... the amount of meat you get for the amount of work you put in makes it probably not worth it... but it's more fun to pick the crabs over a few beers than it is to just get a can of lump crab meat and eat it...

Wow, so over half a billion chickens will die to support the Super Bowl? Almost Mayan sacrifice / Voodoo ritual like in comparison. And I thought Football wasn't that violent.

LOL, I'll think about this when I'm eating my wings.

You eat your wings.......let the masses eat wings.........I will rest comfortably knowing that the chicken breasts I eat are only available due to the demand for wings. After all, if a chicken or 10 have to die for you to eat wings, I may as well eat the breasts so they don't go to waste, right?

That would be by far and away the bust bang for your buck. And it's not even CLOSE!

A bone in chicken breast

67% meat

12% skin

21% bone

Chicken wing

31% meat

23% skin

46% bone

Meat Per Chicken Part Breakdown

Unless you can get chicken wings for slightly less than half the cost of bone in chicken breast, breasts are best! Which has been my motto all along!

No,here's the real culprit;

" pressure from a federal government requirement that mandates 40 percent of our corn crop be turned into fuel in the form of ethanol. Simply put, less corn equals higher feed costs"

I lived on wings as a student. Wings were a throw away meat back in the early 70's.....maybe 35 cents a lb.....all I know is I could buy a bulk pack at the Piggly Wiggly for maybe $1.50 and gnaw on wings for 3-4 days ....I mean like 40 wings for under $2.

Stick them on a cookie sheet with a little oil on top, some lemon pepper, and you were set for half the week.

If everybody had like minds, we would never learn.

It wasn't so much grammar or spelling as it was the that in a thread discussing breasts, you misspelled best and put bust. Had you put bost or bist, it wouldn't have been funny.
