I didn't. You made that up out of thin air. Everything else you stated I didn't even care to read.

Well, let's examine that statement for more than what you mean.. Who have they thrown unconditional support behind? What player?
They haven't thrown it behind any player at any position, but specifically speaking about the QB position, they did say that there would be a competition. That leads to the inference that Weeden doesn't have the support that he enjoyed last season from the previous regime. It's inherently implied in the statement.

Okay. I'm not sure what relevance that has to Weeden's lack of support from the front office and the primary coaches.

That they're speaking about Weeden at all and saying the words 'QB competition' in conjunction with his name says more than anything that isn't said about someone else on the roster.

I think that if the Raiders dump Palmer, he might be a possible option for the Browns.

Anyway I think it is going to be hard to beat Weeden out in this scheme. It really plays to his strengths. Landry Jones is one to watch as I believe he will wow people (especially Chud). Barkley is Lombari's guy have no doubts about this one. Again we will draft one, the question will be which one and how high do we go. .
Landry Jones really??? He couldnt even start full-time in College his senior year and a he's your guy? Didnt you want Sanchez too a few years ago?
I thought Sanchez was barely worth a 3rd. Jones has tools to groom. If you can't see that then something is wrong with your eyes.

J/C For those interested in Flacco, it looks like the bidding starts at $20M per. Ravens in a tough spot, poor babies.Joe Flacco’s agent says he should be league’s highest paid QBposted by Curtis Crabtree PFT February 5, 2013, 10:54 PM EST Reuters - Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco has made the playoffs in each of his five seasons in the NFL and now has a Super Bowl ring and MVP award under his belt as well. According to Brian A. Shactman of CNBC, Flacco’s agent, Joe Linta, will be looking to leverage that success into a massive payday for his client. Linta told Shactman he believes Flacco should be the highest paid quarterback in the NFL. “When you do a contract of this magnitude, you look at what is the player’s body of work presently,” Linta said. “And what are the expectations going forward over the next four, five or six years. “Joe wins on both accounts.” In order for that to become a reality, the Ravens will need to pay Flacco at least $20 million a year. Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning made $18 million this season while New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees averages $20 million a year. As Shactman points out, Flacco has won as many Super Bowls as Manning and Brees and is the youngest quarterback of the group. Linta is likely to make the argument that Flacco has accomplished just as much as Manning and Brees and is just entering the prime of his career. It appears likely the Ravens will have to use the exclusive franchise tag on Flacco in order to ensure he will remain with the Ravens next season. A deal of this size likely will not be completed by the deadline to designate franchise players on March 4. The franchise tag alone would likely bring $20 million a year to Flacco. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/201...ighest-paid-qb/

My point is, they are virtually saying nothing and if they weren't asked about Weeden, I'm not sure they'd have said a word about Weeden otherwise.
Very closed lipped about players in general. And, when you think about it, that's probably a good thing
I expect them to bring in several QB's to look at. Don't have a clue which ones, but I expect a few to be brought in. I do expect that McCoy will be gone. He doesn't seem to fit what Chud and Turner said they wanted. But Lewis might stay.

That would come as a big shock to me, Ytown. He isn't getting a ton of help out there, and even though he hasn't been the same guy since he hurt his arm several years ago, he's still better than anything they have on their roster.
I don't know that a 33-year old stop-gap is what this organization would go after, but one never knows with Banner.

He's also owed $28 million over the next two seasons, which the Raiders can't afford. He re-structured his deal at the end of the 2011 league year and they're asking him to do it again.

There has been talk that Banner may be interested in Vick .... and if he's not too old, neither is Palmer. Palmer would be a far better fit for this offense as well.
I don't necessarily want either guy, but I think that he could be an option.
Neither the Raiders current staff nor their front office is responsible for, nor wedded to Palmer. I think that the financial realities will force Palmer out of Oakland.

I agree his arm isn't an ideal fit for Turner's offense but neither was Philip Rivers' and he made it work. Here's the way that I look at it: I think we're deciding between a guy without ideal physical tools vs. a guy without ideal mental tools. I can understand the argument for Weeden to some extent because there's always the hope that Weeden can progress and if so, he has the tools whereas Smith's arm is what it is. However, if he doesn't progress much, we're MUCH better off with Smith, arm limitations and all.
And that's the rub. I really don't see where the optimism comes from that Weeden is going to suddenly ascend to greatness in a new system.
The problem with Weeden is that a lot of his issues carry over into any system. The bouts of inaccuracy, the bad decisions, locking onto receivers, bad reads, poor pocket presence etc. will give him the same kind of trouble in Norv's offense. In fact, it may even give him MORE trouble given that the WCO was a much "safer" offense compared to an Air Coryell system. I also look at Smith's maturity handling a benching he didn't deserve vs. Weeden's constant complaining about Shurmur and see a guy in Smith who knows how to handle himself vs. Weeden who seems like he's desperate to cling onto what may be his only chance to start.
Yes, he's going to be more comfortable in a vertical passing scheme. Yes he's better operating out of the shotgun. Look at his splits though. His QB rating throwing over 20 yards? About 65. His QB rating throwing out of the shotgun? 79. Believe it or not, Smith was better in both categories (over 100 QB rating on attempts of 20+ and 84 QB rating out of the shotgun). Now obviously Smith isn't perfect in a vertical passing scheme but could he be an upgrade while we find a "long-term solution" that isn't 30? Absolutely.
That's why I'd want a competition between the two. Bring them both in and let the better player show himself. If we go with only Weeden in camp again we might be forced to sink with Weeden again and no one wants another lost season. I'd much rather figure out whether that's the case before the games count and while we can still do something about it.
We're... we're good?

See and that's the devide right there: I'd rather go 3-5 wins with Weeden busting and having a shot at one of the 3-4 franchise QBs available NEXT draft (I know this gets thrown around often, but this time it's legit: Fales, Carr, Boyd, Murray and Renner are already a pretty strong SR class, add to those 1 or 2 of Bridgewater, Cato, B.Smith or T.Kelly) THEN going 7 to even 9 wins with a "meh" Smith with "as good as it gets"....otoh, if Weeden progresses and we win 6-8 games, I'd rather have that than "meh"-Smith, who is what he is
Sure, we can and most probably would win more games with Smith, but at what expense? and with what upside? I don't see any upisde to this scenario? Only hope is that Smith somehow is this stable QB of that mirage 9 games instead of any version of the 70+ start before...saying "hoping for Weeden" is a longshot and then believe in Santa Clause doesn't look like a good argument to me. It's preference and resentment mostly, but I fully believe that with Spectre it's simply your opinion and to a level I agree, but I look BEYOND the 2013 season, which is yet another "rebuilding" one with new schemes and terminologies for ALL players on this roster....what's best for 2014 and beyond? Hoping for Smith to develop all of a sudden into MORE than a game manager? or hoping for Weeden to either develop and show promise and get closer to that gunslinger upside or stay the same and bust to 3-6 wins max to put us in a more preferable position in a strong QB class?
I don't have to think about that one even for 1 second...

If we were still trying to run a WCO and a 4-3 defense, I'd strongly consider Smith after Moore and Milliner (and maybe Werner), but with the change in offense I think Weeden is the better option, especially given the revamped defensive personnel needed.

I don't have to think about that one even for 1 second...
If there is an Andrew Luck in the next draft class then I’m all aboard with you about taking a gamble like that with Weeden because either a) he improves or b) he doesn't and we have another Top 5 pick and we can hopefully land the “stud”. Barring that though, it's extremely dangerous to go into that mode.
What you're saying about next year's draft class was "legit" about this year's. A solid senior class of Matt Barkley, Tyler Wilson, Landry Jones, Geno Smith, Mike Glennon with possible junior entries of Tyler Bray, Logan Thomas, Aaron Murray, A.J. McCarron, Tajh Boyd, Derek Carr… but what happened? The big name high potential juniors all flopped and/or went back to school and none of the seniors separated themselves. Now we’ve gone from a projected nice QB class a year ago to one that most fans want us to avoid completely. Poor KC… but that could easily be poor us next year if we put our eggs in that basket.
The other problem is that we might have enough to be “meh” anyway with a Ray Horton defense and Weeden at the helm. Consider that we went 5-11 and could’ve easily been better if the team could close games out at all. It’s not feasible to think that just by switching Weeden to an offense he’s more comfortable with and improving marginally in the off-season, we’re a 6+ win team. What we CAN do is go the SF route with a QB. Take a high upside guy outside the 1st (Bray, Glennon or whoever) and fix/develop him on the bench while we have a legitimate option hold down the fort. Smith would be perfect for that.
Smith was more than a game manager last year but because he got benched (not performance related at all) and because of his prior “bust” reputation, not a lot of people saw it happen. There’s a legitimate chance that he’s not only an upgrade to Weeden, he’s a good QB. If we draft a high upside project, bring in Smith and let him compete with Weeden, we stand a chance to lock down our QB present and future. To me, that’s a much better option than playing the QB lottery and hoping that a) a QB needy team doesn’t suck enough to pick before us (which almost always happens) and/or b) that there’s even a guy worthy of the pick.

Sorry, but I disagree strongly that "good" QBs get EVER becnhed on a .750 team
As for next year's QB class: Most of the guys I listed already had a much better season as JRs as the majority of this class
Lastly, sure we could win 6+ with Weeden being "meh" too, but a "meh" Weeden sis already an upgrade on bad-Weeden...if I get to choose which meh-QB, I'd always go with the less experienced-more upside left guy...having said that, I don't consider this scenario to be very probable due to personnel and scheme adjusting period
Norv and Chud throw out of the shotgun well over 70% of the time and Weeden had a decent 79 QBr as a rook out of the shotgun. He had the same rating since week 2, playing up and down. It'd be INSANE to give up on any rook QB with that outlook and 1st season...I think this discussion would not even exist in any other NFL city

Sure it would, Cleveland hasn't cornered the market on irrational fans... as for the media, it will continue every year until a QB steps up and takes command of it... you may like Weeden because you watched every play, you may see the potential behind the numbers.. but most people, including those in the national media still see a 5 win team with pretty pedestrian QB numbers from a 29 year old rookie QB... Throw in new ownership and management with no connection to Weeden, and Banner coming from Philly where Vick might not return, and that just fuels the fire... It's like the perfect storm for media frenzy...

How quickly so many forget the dismal QB situation ever since 1999. We saw how it played out with the 49er's.
They now have their QB of the future and another QB they may get a kings ransom for. I guess maybe people have become comfortable with something less than mediocre and can't see the wisdom that two good QB's is far better than none at all.
Their plan is to "hope for the best" just like we've done ever since our return, rather than be stacked at the position. At least possibly. I'm tired of being bankrupt at the position and people acting like using a legitimate road to solve the problem is a terrible thing to even consider.
It's irrational beyond logic IMO

They do when the backup is a top notch physical talent who was drafted to be the future before the current QB had even played a snap for the new coach. Did Peyton Manning get cut because he was done/stinks or because Indy had a new, young stud option?

On the flip side...
It'd be INSANE to stick with a 30 year old developmental QB who finished near the bottom of the league in almost every statistical category last year when a younger, NFL ready option who blew away the rookie's performance last year is out there... I say we do both! Weeden was signed under the new rookie salary agreement. You keep both QB's on the roster this year and see how things shake out.
By the end of this coming season, you'll know where you stand pretty much. You'll either have a great one/two punch at QB, or Weeden will be released and you draft a developmental QB to sit behind smith until he develops.
The #22 pick even at the QB position didn't command the kind of money it did just the year before.
I'd venture to guess if anyone wished to look it up, we were paying Wallace a lot more to ride the pines than we would be paying Weeden to do the same.
Would Smith be happy if he ended up behind Weeden? Well of course not. at that juncture they could give his agent the option of trying to look for a deal elsewhere.
But wouldn't that be a pleasant position to be in for a change?

This x1000. It really is amazing to me that some fans would rather go into next season with less at QB than more. I'd rather be in the position to have a guy win a competition (I don't care if it's either Weeden or Smith who wins the competition so long as one of them rises above) and trade the loser than be in the position we were in last year with a bare cupboard.
The thing I'll keep repeating to Weeden supporters who want nothing to do with bringing in "mediocre" Alex Smith is that it's likely only going to cost us cap space and Haslam's money to try him out and MAYBE a low pick (so long as he's willing to come here if he has to compete that is). If Weeden can't beat out a "mediocre" QB after a full year of starts and playing in new offense that favors him vs. the other guy, he probably shouldn't be starting in the NFL in the first place.

I'm not sure, in this case, that I see this as a good thing. I do not want a QB controversy and this is tailor made for one. Weeden, even if he progresses, is going to have struggles.. so you have a guy sitting behind him who has proven that under the right circumstances, he can play very well.. and if Smith starts, then you are basically committing to Smith. It's not like Weeden is a 23 year old who can afford to sit and learn for a couple years.. the guy, if he's going to play, needs to be accelerated down the learning curve, not backed up on it.
I think the answer to the question is as Dj pointed out, are we trying to win this year or are we trying to set the stage to win consistently... whichever QB you start needs to be the future, not just the guy that can potentially win a couple more games this year...

How many times have we said that before? That after one more season the QB controversy will work itself out.. it never has. If Weeden wins the job he will look better but not great, then he will get hurt, then Smith will not good, steady, consistent but not dynamic, then Weeden will come back and struggle but show flashes... then at the end of the year we will be right where we are now...
I know the FO says all the right things about a competition that should energize Weeden to work harder and make the fanbase feel good..... I'm at the point where I'm not really in favor of a competition, I'm in favor of going all-in with a QB this year (my preference is Weeden) and see what he can do with McCoy or some other backup that not many are going to call for...... if he hasn't made the strides you need to see by the end of next season, then go all-in on another QB in next years draft...

That's all I'm really after is a QB competition where we actually know one of the QB's can win games. People can say what they want to, when a QB completes over 70% of his passes be they short or long, he's an accurate QB.
When a QB has 13 TD's verses 5 INT's, he's a good decision maker. If TRich is as advertised when healthy, with one good run blocking G, we're not that more devoid of talent on the O side of the ball than san fran.
So I'm not really understanding why people say TRich is good but say smith really wouldn't help?

Competition? If we spend any pick equal or higher than a 3rd to get him and pay him the 7.5mil or even more as some suggest...competition??? and don't even try to Flynn-Wilson this, as BOTH have been brought in by the SAME regime in SEA and Flynn gets some millions less than Smith...with Smith-Weeden, there would be the same "competition" as McCoy-Weeden this past TC and we all know it

just clicking. I'm with spectre and toad... the more I think about Smith the better I like the idea to have him come in and battle with Weeden. I'm not completely down on Weeden (putting him in a WCO was as dumb as putting Jeff Garcia in Botch's drop-back system, which is exactly what Botch did!), but I think Smith is more of a viable option than his detractors give him credit for. I'd have no problem if he came to Cleveland.
Vick? Please God, no. His best days are behind him and I personally can't stand the guy (even before the dog-killing scandal).

I felt just the way you did at the start of this season when it comes to the QB controversy. I also felt that with Weeden being the known starter, without the controversy, it would be very conducive to gradual but steady improvement over the course of the season from him.
Some people thrive without pressure and being relaxed. The problem being, I didn't see that improvement. Some people also thrive under pressure. It could work either way depending on the individual.
The big concern for everyone is if Weeden flops. We would be left in a position to draft yet another rookie and throw him in the line up right away. Boom or bust all over again.
I'm at the point that I'm not really worried about what the media and fans say when it comes to a QB controversy. And had weeden of given signs of gradual improvement in things like reading D's and his decision making over the course of the season, this wouldn't be an issue.
The question then becomes, in a competitive business where winning dictates everything, how long of a honeymoon can you give a 29 year old QB?

I don't think anyone is disputing that Smith is an accurate QB (sorry if I missed that). I think there are three glaring problems with Smith: 1 - It is perceived that he doesn't have enough arm strength to run the offense described by Chud and Turner. 2 - He was benched mid-season when he was playing well. That makes me think he has reached his ceiling. His ceiling in the conservative 49er offense and our offense are two different things. If he can complete 70% of his passes and have a QB rating of 104 in our new offense I would give up our first round pick for him. 3 - We have to give up picks to get him. Our second round pick was used on Josh Gordon. Smith will likely take at least a third round pick to get. No matter what defense we run we will have holes to fill. We need our draft picks to fill those holes. Quote:

Alex Smith's career record is 38-36-1. Rex Grossman's career record is 25-22. Tarvaris Jackson's career record is 17-17. Matt Moore's career record is 13-12. Mark Sanchez's career record is 33-29. Mike Vick's career record is 56-44-1. Matt Hasselbeck's career record is 80-72.
Most of those QBs can be had for next to nothing and have proven they can win games.

They were 13-3 last year with smith starting all 16 games and smith was injured with a record of 6-2 this season. So over the last two seasons, in 24 games, smith was 19-5. Yeah, we don't want him!

Of the QBs currently in the NFL that are not on our team.
The only one I would have any interest in is Matt Moore.
I don't think he's an elite level guy or anything. But I thinks he's good.
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

49ers the past 2 seasons:
Alex Smith 20-6-1 (including playoffs) contributing under 199yds/game w/o Alex Smith 7-3 (including playoffs) w/ QB contributing 219yds/game (only passing)

The fact that Wilson came in and beat out Flynn was a shock to Seattle.. that wasn't supposed to happen. I do not believe they brought him in as an immediate QB competition, which is what we would be doing.

The 49ers success has more to do with their head coach, not Smith. Pre-Harbaugh Smith was 19-31. We shouldn't consider that though.

My guess is that Seattle didn't think that Wilson would beat out Flynn.

Most of those QBs can be had for next to nothing and have proven they can win games.
Most of them have also hit their ceiling and their ceiling is fairly mediocre... others are past their prime and on their way back down. I would much rather see what Weeden has and how far he can go than go get a guy that has proven to be mediocre and isn't the future.
Alex Smith is the only guy on the list that is the least bit interesting to me. If it was 10 years ago I'd consider the now 37 year old Matt Hasselbeck... if he'd like to come here and accept the job of back-up/mentor for a couple years, I'd jump on that in a heartbeat if it didn't cost too much.. but not to come here and compete for the job.
