Don't get me wrong...I want us to spend, it's all set up for that, I mean we HAVE to spend...it was the plan of the old regime to add prime players when our own young foundation players are nearing their prime years.
I just want them to do it wisely and not reckless....I actually trust Banner to do so.
If we do it the short sighted way, we'll be the Jets quickly...win a little more, but going nowhere fast and having to blow it up after 3-4 years. Do you want us to overspend on someone like Laurent Robinson just to make a splash? That's what I mean with "wisely"...don't spend just to spend, that's all I'm saying

at some point this franchise has to start closing ground on the rest of the AFC North. and it can't be done by drafting alone. the "you can only rebuild through the draft" is tired and so freaking yesterday. Its time to start to get serious about winning some football by the Northcoast. the last regime wasn't about winning at all. I need to see progress thats measured by wins, not by potential. too many years of that. give me Mike Wallace, Paul Kruger and Andy Levtrite. I want players that makes this team better. The last free agents this team acquired did the opposite.

You'd think he would try and change the look of his posts. What is this, his third or fourth attempt at a new user name?

I agree with spending wisely.. but I think we are good enough, we have enough talent, that we can selectively target some guys that are good as opposed to targeting guys that are stop gap bandaids to fill some roster spots for a couple seasons..

What team will spend money early in free agency? Look to the Cleveland Browns.

I hope so.
When you have a lot of needs, you can't always use the draft to fill those needs. That's where FA kicks in. As long as we make good decisions and get guys who project to still have 4-5 good years in the tank, go for it!
We need to kick start something in Berea.
Well Peen, I've always been a big believer that you build through the draft and never go crazy in Free Agency. But man, I'm just freakin tired of losing. if we gotta blow some dough on quality guys, I'm going to shut up about it.
I just wanna win.
I know the feeling man, I've been there for a while. Plus, we have to spend some money.
You always build through the draft....we all agree.....but "supplement" is a actual word in the dictionary......nothing wrong with supplementing your team.

some of us have fallen in love with the art and science of being GM ... to the point where we worry about how the money is spent ... and we make excuses for new systems and coaches and players ... and we are willing to live with excuse after excuse after excuse.
If that isn't the truth.
Probably one of the most salient points I've read here in a while.
I think the years and years and years of rooting for a loser has effected the fanbase.
It's like "building the team the right way, through the draft" was some kind of magic pixie dust that placated the masses...
All the while we haven't won more than 5 games in 5 years and we haven't spent our cap room. Not just cap room but $50M in cap room.
I didn't understand last year the whole acceptance of the "we aren't going to be a player in free agency thing" when we have tons of money that we aren't spending....
How did the Browns get a pass on this? It's a deft bit of PR I'll tell you that.

The part many don't understand when talkiing about the cap is that you can "carry over" a good chunk of unspent cap into next season...that's what Heckert did and I think it was Banner himself who said a good 10mil is carry over from 2012. Heckert "saved" the cap over (through "unlikely to be earned bonuses") because it made all the sense in the world to wait and build a foundation through the draft first (since all he inherited was next to no foundation and one of hte oldest rosters) So, since you have to spend close to 90% of the cap and saving over the rest, we really didn't waste any resources....the Browns can spend more in 2013 than other teams, we have a higher cap due to those carry overs. What teams like Pittsburgh and the Cowboys are doing is delaying the inevitable problem by turning guaranteed salaries into bonuses. That's why there are teams right now that are in cap hell and would even be over it if they released most of their roster...lots of dead cap money. So while those teams narrowed their cap number from year to year in order to "breath" short term, the Browns sacrificed 2 seasons and now have one of the youngest rosters AND are in excellent cap shape, having much more than the others. I hope that was clear enough... All that said: look at all FA lists every year. Looking back, well over 90% aren't worth the cash they get and I'd guess a good 20-30% of players simply stops playing at the same level after signing their big fat contract...all you have is name players and bloated contracts...go ask the Eagles and Joe Banner

Or maybe change the players he pimps ...... or something.

We should have gone out and spent big money on Nnamdi, Cullen Jenkins and all those high priced free agents and we could have been just like the Eagles only worse. We did not have the talent nor the leadership to absorb the free agent attitude and it is why the franchise was marred in failure.
I was listening to Scott Pioli a few days ago just raving about the Browns. He said the Browns were young talented and had a great locker room. He was beaming with enthusiasm and praise for this team.
Taking it slow and building up a roster of Browns players first was needed. We never had an identify all our own. We have tried to be the pats without the pats locker room and leaders. We tried to be the Cowboys under Butch and that didnt work.
These kids are Browns. Almost the entire roster were drafted by the Browns and now they are growing together. I think we can handle the right free agents as long as we do not go overboard. If we had stop gaped with a roster full of free agents it would have benn just be another build on a house of cards.
People want to whine about building it slow through the draft, yet you simply cant build anything sustainable on the back of free agents. you just get to many guys wanting theirs and that is all they care about.
Look at this roster just about everyone was drafted by us or signed as an undrafted
Receivers All drafted Browns RBs #1 and #2 drafted Browns Qbs #1 and #2 drafted Browns TE We do have Smelly and Cameron that we drafted but Smith and Watson were FA.
DL All drafted Browns (we just cut rucker and Parker wont be back) LB All drafted Browns but Fujita and Gocong S Only Young FA Corner only Sheldon wasnt drafted by the Browns
If we are smart we can build upon what is in place. There arent as many holes to fill as many think. Another strong draft and a couple free agents and we are in business.

Don't get me wrong, I am not whining about building through the draft. That is the way to go about things.
I am just saying we are at the point where 1-2 solid free agent additions might be enough to increase the wins by 5-6 games. Not them alone by any means, but their added talent to supplement our current guys could go a long way.

this is why I didn't want to see H & H go.
They actually cleaned up our problems and really were attempting at making this team great. They ran out of time when Learner decided to sell. Had he not sold- (In Heckert we trust would still be floating around this board)
IMO Heckert didn't deserve to get the boot. the Walrus... meh. I could have lived either way. I was bent on giving them the 5 years because I saw what we were building. I think had Randy not begun the process of selling... we wouldn't have panicked and picked Weeden, Gordon, TR. I could be wrong but that's just my opinion.
I think the only person who needed to go was Shurmur. IMO we hitched our wagon to the wrong guy and that hurt the final product of this team. The sad part (for a GM) is no one ever knows exactly what game/score to pick at the sports book. You only know how to play the odds and the rest is an educated guess.
At the end of the day... none of it matters because it is in the past.
I will conclude with this: I hope we continue to see competitive games week in and week out. I remember the days before H & H when that was all this board really wanted.
Hunter + Dart = This is the way.

Vasquez, Keenan Lewis, and Chris Clemons may help net those extra W's.
(I'd like to say Byrd or Goldson, but I doubt either gets away from their teams)
