Well I finally got hooked up with a decent paying job... Unfortunately, it is third shift! Anyone have any experience with third shift? Any advice?

Fin used to. I'd love to have those hours. Start your sleep patern about a week ahead of time if you can.... it will be hard at first. What exactly are your hours?

I did it for a couple of years a long time ago. Hate, hate, hated it!!! I know people who absolutely love it though, I think it just depends on you.

I could probably do it for a while....I love night time. Just be sure your bedroom is VERY dark so you can sleep.

The best part about it, I think, would be you never have to take time off work to go to the dentist or the bank... stuff like that. Any roommates or anything to keep you up?

3rd shift....I worked graveyard for 7 years....get some blackposter board to black out your bedroom windows, a window AC unit will drown out all the summertime outside noises and make for a nice sleeping tempeature, and get used to your friends calling you up during your sleep time and inviting you out for a few beers!!! Also it's great to have all the stores to yourself in the mornings and it's easy to make doc appointments. good luck

I've been doing it for over 10 years now.

It has its good points and bad points.

Everybody is right, make your bedroom as dark as possible and possibly use something for white noise if it's noisy around you house in the day time.

Get used to living on 5 hours sleep a day.

What about weekends? Do you stay on the same sleep schedule?

I worked thirds for about 8 months and hated it, on my days off I would still be up till all hours of the night whether i wanted to or not. It was not for me but I know many of the people i worked with on that shift loved it, so I guess it does depend on the person.

Go Browns!!!

I did second shift for about 13 years. I did miss time with the kids, but also had more time to get things done.

It pays the bills and like any shift, you get used to it after a while.

I worked a graveyard for about 7 years. Buy some good sunglasses.

The traffic is non-existant when going to work, and it's all going in the opposite direction when you go home. You can schedule your day to sleep in the morning or evening.

The only really bad thing was finding a bar at 8am, but most bowling alleys are open at 8, and they will open the bar if you tell them you just got off work.

I worked 3rd shift for a bit when I started out in IT. I HATED it. My body never adjusted. I'd fall into a half asleep zombie state at work, and couldn't sleep during the day. I pretty much felt like I was on a bad acid trip 24 hours a day. It sucked.

But if it works for you...

I did nights for about 5 years.....through the week I would go home, eat breakfast, shower, and go right to bed....However, the weekends I would stay up saturday morning until sat night....then sleep normal until I went back in Monday nite.

My wife did it for 6 yrs before we got married, and now 10 1/2 since we've been married.......She says she'll never work days, but that's because this is what she's used to.

As for sleep? She lays down Sunday night about 7-8 - gets a nap in, then off to work at 10:15 pm. Comes home Monday morning at 7:00, sleeps from 7:30 til 2:30 or 3......is up til it's time for work,,,repeat until Friday.

She comes home friday a.m. at 7, sleeps for 2 or 3 hours, then gets up and is up till bedtime friday night (sometimes evening - we don't do much on friday nights - she's too tired). But, we do sleep in the same bed, at the same time on friday - Sat. is just a reg. day, sunday church, eat out, watch the Browns or nascar, sunday evening she lays down - repeat.

I work weekends...Friday, Saturday, and Sundays. I usually take Monday through Thursdays off, and on the weekends, I sleep days, and then I transition to sleeping nights on Mondays, and on Fridays, I transition back to staying up at night.

I don't work them but have know many who did.

3rd is way better than 2nd...that kills everything.

Most I have known treat it almost like a day job.....get up a few hours before you go in.....go to bed a few hours after you get home.

If you have kids and family, they modify it and go to be shortly after returning home and getting up around 3-4 when the kids, wife get home.

Take the phone out of the room you sleep in, get some earplugs, buy better darkout blinds or buy a mask to wear when you go to sleep.

The key is family needs to be aware of your sleep time and respect that.

You will find your groove pretty quickly.

I am on second for the time being but have been on third for the past few years. I prefer 3rd to second because I dont see the wife or kids during the week at all being on second shift. During the summer second is kind of cool though because I can do stuff with my kids during the day before I go to work but it kind of kills their summer fun because they have to go to daycare till their mother gets off at 5 P.M.. I like 3rd during the week but hate it on the weekends. I find myself sitting up till 3,4 o clock in the morning all by myslef on the weekends. Actually gets kind of lonely and depressing. Aslo our third shift works M-F so you dont get off till 6 a.m. saturday morning so either your saturday is shot from sleeping or you are miserable because you are so tired from no sleep. When on thrid I come home shower and eat a snack and get to bed right away so that was i can spend the evening with the family before i go back to work.

I worked 3rd for a few years and my experience was to definately black out the windows ( one year I even used aluminum foil....cut out all light). Treat it like first shift (as others have said); do the things that you would do if you got off work at 4pm. Dishes, housework, any projects you got going. My neighbors laughed at me because I'd be cutting the grass at 9 am with a beer in my hand...LOL

You doan get much sleep...I'd usually get to bed at 10 or so, sleep till 4, spend some time with the spouse.....eat, catch-up on the day, and then take a nap from 9 to 10 (definately helps !!).......

Good Luck to you. Not an easy shift to work, but not as bad as 2nd shift(by far). My biggest thing was making the bedroom a comfortable place to sleep.......no noises and definately no LIGHT !

I went to D.I.Y. back in the 90's and bought a couple sheets of 1/2 inch thick styrofoam. Cut them to the size of the windows and put them in the windows as inserts when I slept. Blocks out the light quite nicely. I learned to sleep with the tv going because neighbors, well none of them worked at all, and usually were up and noisy by the time I was supposed to be in R.E.M.

Funny the looks you get, for instance I'll go to the restaurant and order dinner at 8 a.m., while everyone is eating eggs or hotcakes, I'm eating stuffed cabbage or whatever the special is that tripped my trigger.

My girlfriend (NICU nurse) worked what I consider the worst graveyard/normal shirt I've ever - EVER heard of the past few years. How'd you like this:

40 hrs/week
Shifts were either 7pm-7am, or 11pm-7am

or

7am-7pm, or 11am-7pm

She would switch off - every 2 friggin weeks between the day and night shift! 2 (12) hour days, 2 (8) hour days a week - every other week was a mandatory weekend.

So...every two weeks, day shift, then night shift, day shift, then night shift...

And these are the people that are primarily responsible for taking care of the sickest babies - working that kind of schedule. Way to go UH!

That's prettty much my exact schedule except I don't get to bed until around 9 during the week and don't do church on Sunday morning.

I used to work a swing shift. 2 weeks of first shift, then 2 weeks of second shift, and then 2 weeks of Third. I hated it. Second shift is the worst. Third was not that bad, but it got old fast.
