The NFL’s version of the crop report is expected to be released in the days before free agency begins. And unless the NFL’s version of Clarence Beeks ends up in a gorilla suit (in a gorilla cage with a real gorilla), the NFL’s version of Duke & Duke could be shouting, “Buy! Buy!” when the market opens.
Per a source with knowledge of the situation, it’s now believed that the salary cap could exceed $123 million per team.
Not long ago, it was believed the cap would be $121 million per team. More recently, the magic number became $122 million.
Now, it’s more than $123 million.
At $123 million, that’s only a 1.9-percent increase over last year. But it’s more than anyone thought it would be. And the extra $2.4 million in 2013 can provide the foundation for a much larger guaranteed payment now, with the amount spread for cap purposes over multiple years.
Besides, with many teams fighting to get in compliance with the cap, every dollar helps.

Bingo.
Who knows the answer to this.....I don't.
What if some team just said screw the cap, we'll spend what we want to spend. Do they lose picks?
If they said OK, we'll forfeit picks, do they forfeit games?
Maybe the other owners simply lock the other owner up and beat him with a phone book across the midsection.
Just asking.

The league will not allow teams to go over the cap. If they have $5 million in cap space and want to sign a guy for $7 million the league won't approve it.

That is my understanding as well.. But hell, who knows really.
Make a rule, someone will figure a way around it.. Happens all the time.

The league approves all contracts. If there's no approval there's no player.
And the NFL docked the Cowboys and Redskins THIS YEAR for going over the "handshake" cap the owners had in place when the lockout was around. Now they couldn't prevent it legally because it was technically uncapped but they're punishing them anyway.
And to me that stinks to high heaven but the NFL is sticking it to them.

Which FA is a "bargain" for us? Looks like a number of vets available, but the price for a LB or cornerback is pretty high demand for dollars. We need a couple more beasts on D. Really wonder what the new skill doctors will pick. Just this bad feeling.

I understand that, signing new players. Some teams are over now. What if they don't take part in the draft and just keep things as is?

j/c Anyone know why Breston's playing time was cut last year? He's a good, solid receiver, sneaky deceptive with the ball, and from what I can tell, a good guy. He'd be great in the slot. Maybe be the guy that Norwood & Cooper tried to be but for some reason or another couldn't quite get it done. Plus, his veteran presence would be a plus. Only question is durability. Is he another Mo-Mass? Receiver Steve Breaston visits Browns By MARLA RIDENOUR Akron Beacon Journal Free-agent wide receiver Steve Breaston visited the Browns on Wednesday and underwent a physical examination, a league source told the Akron Beacon Journal. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. A six-year veteran, Breaston was cut by the Kansas City Chiefs on Feb. 19. He could be a candidate to replace Browns receiver Mohamed Massaquoi, a free agent who is not expected to return. Breaston met with the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, according to ProFootballTalk, but the Steelers reportedly are over the salary cap. They are restructuring the contract of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and are expected to finish it by the end of the week, ESPN's Ed Werder reported. According to multiple reports, they are doing the same with linebackers Lawrence Timmons and LaMarr Woodley and receiver Antonio Brown. The Steelers might be the front-runners to land Breaston, born in North Braddock, Pa. Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley coached Breaston with the Arizona Cardinals and during his first year with the Chiefs. The Dallas Cowboys, Tennessee Titans and Detroit Lions are also interested in Breaston, according to NFL.com, and the Minnesota Vikings have been mentioned as another possible suitor. Breaston, 29, signed a five-year, $22.5 million contract with the Chiefs in 2011. He fell out of favor there last season, catching only seven passes for 74 yards in 10 games. He has played in 86 games with 43 starts and has totaled 255 receptions for 3,387 yards and nine touchdowns. Link

Jermichael Finley told ESPN's Josina Anderson on Wednesday that he wouldn't be willing to accept a pay cut in order to stay with the Green Bay Packers.
The tight end is due a $3 million roster bonus on March 27 and there were rumblings during last season that the team was preparing to cut ties with him. If the Packers trade or release Finley, they would save $8.25 million.
He told ESPN that he hasn't been contacted by the Packers about restructuring his contract, a two-year deal he signed with the team last offseason.
"The Packers are barely talking to me right now," he told ESPN. "I know they're just doing it the Packer way and playing it close to the vest."
"I haven't got a call. I haven't got a text asking me to take a pay cut or to restructure my deal at this point -- not at all," he said.
If the Packers do contact him about reworking his contract, he made it clear he'd rather be released than have to take a pay cut.
"I'd have to walk for sure, meaning I couldn't take a pay cut," he told ESPN. "Maybe I'd restructure if it's a deal that I like and it makes sense, but I'm not the guy that's just going to sign anything and let anything pass.
"I'm not that guy. Other than that, taking a pay cut or restructuring doesn't sound good to me at this time. I like my deal. I start training in Minneapolis [on Thursday] and I'm more inspired than ever to start next season off right and be the tight end I know I can be. It's all business at the end of the day. I just love what I do."
Finley, 25, had a bit of a disappointing season in 2012, catching 61 passes for 667 yards and two touchdowns. His agent also made waves last season when he questioned quarterback Aaron Rodgers' leadership qualities.
He has 64 receptions for 2,485 yards and 17 TDs in three seasons.

He'd be a nice guy to have. He can't block, but neither can Jimmy Graham.

wait, the Pitt native who played twice for Haley in the past is more likely to end up with the Steelers and was only using us to see if we would overpay for him?

Oh well, he's not the only slot out there. Danny Amendola for one, Welker if Brady doesn't insist on keeping him for another.

I really want Hartline for this offense. I think Little is great for the Slot/TE type role. Gordon is your #1 big play guy. We need the dependable hands guy that is physical enough to beat 1 on 1 cause he wont see any doubles with Gordon on the other side and little in the middle.

I don't think they let him walk with Tannehill needing all the help he can get. But along your line of thinking, does Bowe get free?

I know you were a huge supporter of David last year before the draft, but I would hardly say he "transformed" the team when they were still a really bad defense.

I'm sure he had everything to do with them going from 4-12 to 7-9...
And Vincent Jackson, Carl Nicks, and Doug Martin had nothing to do with it...
Am I the only one that pronounces hyperbole "Hyper-bowl" instead of "hy-per-bo-le"?

He had Eric Wright behind him...can't help that.
And he was 8th in the NFL in tackles...as a rookie...from the WILL not the Mike. That's crazy. He had 35 more tackles than anyone on his team.
He was the only addition to that front 7.
And they went from last in the NFL in 2011 to first in the NFL in 2012!
A lot of that is Lavonte David, the defensive Rookie of the Month in November.

But David transformed that rush defense. I mean seriously...come on now.

j/c Of 18 Browns free agents, few -- if any -- are expected to return Mar 01, 2013 -- 6:00am By Tony Grossi The Morning Kickoff … Let freedom ring: The Browns have 18 free agents – 13 unrestricted (four years experience or more), two restricted (three years), and three exclusive rights (two years or less). There is no indication they will re-sign any of them. At the NFL combine in Indianapolis last week, I asked CEO Joe Banner if the team has determined what they intend to do with their free agents. “We do know and we won’t say,” he replied. Why not? “Let’s say we’re trying to sign them and we want to bring them back – that wouldn’t be a very smart thing to do from a negotiating perspective. And we don’t need to help other teams know who’s going to be free and not be free,” Banner said. Let’s take a look at the prospective player losses facing the Browns. Unrestricted free agents Sheldon Brown, 33, cornerback: As president of the Eagles, Banner traded him to the Browns in 2010, so he already has rejected him once. Brown was a great example to young players. His imminent departure requires the Browns to acquire a starting cornerback. Nobody on the roster can ascend to that position. Josh Cribbs, 29, special teams/receiver: Holder of more than a dozen franchise return records, he was fourth in kickoff returns and sixth in punt returns in 2012 – but didn’t score. His frustration with losing and watching teammates drop balls often boils over. Heir-apparent Travis Benjamin is 40 pounds lighter, doesn’t play on coverage teams like Cribbs and has question marks about durability and ball security. Phil Dawson, 38, kicker: Probably the most popular player of the expansion era, he holds the franchise record with 305 field goals and is 78 points shy of Lou Groza’s scoring record. The Browns’ only full-time kicker is coming off his first Pro Bowl berth. He won’t be given the franchise tag a third year in a row and hopes to end his career with a winning team. Scott Fujita, 33, outside linebacker: He ended his third straight Browns season on injured reserve and is trying to avoid neck fusion surgery. He will go on to bigger and better things after retirement. Reggie Hodges, 31, punter: Achilles surgery in 2011 resulted in a severe drop-off in gross average (41.8 yards) and net (37.1) in 2012. The recent signing of 2012 camp punter Spencer Lanning was the tip-off that Hodges won’t be back. Brandon Jackson, 27, running back: He played two games and had eight rushes in two years. Not one of the productive free agent pickups in Browns’ history. Josh Johnson, 26, quarterback: A late-season pickup when injuries hit the position. He could end up rejoining Jim Harbaugh in San Francisco. Kaluka Maiava, 26, linebacker: A special teams core player who was forced to start 13 games at outside linebacker in 2012. One of three players left from the 2009 Browns draft. Mohamed Massaquoi, 26, receiver: Another departing member of the 2009 draft class, he averaged 29 catches in four seasons. Injuries the past two years caused him golden opportunities to slip away. Juqua Parker, 34, defensive end: A very productive role player who was second in sacks (six) despite being fifth in snaps among linemen. He may have another year left as a situational rusher in a 4-3 – but not here. Alex Smith, 30, tight end: You’d think the fondness for tight ends among the new coaches might earn him a one-year deal to return. Probably not. Ray Ventrone, 30, defensive back: An Eric Mangini favorite who survived one coaching change but isn’t expected to make it through another. Ben Watson, 32, tight end: He averaged 51 receptions in three years but the numbers working against him are 32 (age) and three (number of concussions the past two seasons). Restricted free agents The Browns can reserve the right to match any offers by tendering them a qualifying offer. Chris Ogbonnaya, 26, running back: A favorite of former coach Pat Shurmur, he may appeal to new coach Rob Chudzinski as a facsimile of Jason Wright, who had his most productive season under Chud in 2007. Eddie Williams, 25, fullback: We’ve never seen him play in a game. Exclusive rights free agents These players can be retained by minimum salary contract tenders. Auston English, 25, defensive end: He has the body type to be a 3-4 outside linebacker, but new coaches usually bring their own developmental players to camp. Emmanuel Stephens, 26, defensive end: See above. Christian Yount, 24, long snapper: He was fairly flawless as Ryan Pontbriand’s replacement. Link

I don't know why they wouldn't keep English & Stephens, at least through camp. Cutting them would be stupid. Tender the minimum and see what they do in the new system, they have to be more valuable than some UDFA or 7th rounder. Also don't know why they wouldn't keep Obi around. He does nothing but bust hump. The rest, I could care less about. I want Dawson to stay, but he's already out the door.

So far the Browns and Steelers are just saying no to him,, wonder if somethings wrong.. I mean, health wise or is he asking for long green?

For two teams.
I was puzzled as to why we were looking into him anyway. I don't really see a fit for him with us.
