just wondering what everybody thought about nick foles. he only played a few games last year but i saw enough to think he would be a perfect competition for weeden.

I kinda like Foles. He sailed too many throws and missed others, but the guy has a nice arm and made some plays. I like QBs who make plays. It was hard to judge him because Philly's OL was as bad as it gets, but the guy has some skills. I just wonder if Philly would part w/him due to their instability at QB?

I've read somewhere recenlty, can't remember where because I've read so much as we approach FA and the draft. There is a possibility that Horton will change TJ Wards responsibilities to better fit with his attacking defensive scheme. If I find the description of what might look like I'll add it. The point being that the way he's been used until now may change drastically. He may get the chance to be a significantly different player in Horton's defense.

Ward already is pretty aggressive, almost a fault. I would think that he already fits this so called "attacking defense."

i'm thinking that was you're typical rookie mistakes. the rookie superstars you see lately (luck, rg3, cam newton etc) as you know is not the norm and i'm thinking his OL had something to with it also.

I just wonder if Philly would part w/him due to their instability at QB?

kelly has already said a few things to make you think otherwise but that is just coach speak imo. looking at the QB's they've brought in along with vick tells me that is definately the direction they're going. so why would you keep a totally different type QB?
as weak as the QB crop is this year in the draft and FA i'm sure they will move foles somewhere.
what do we have to trade? McCoy maybe? he would fit the philly scheme alot better than foles. maybe a DL guy? there's alot of scenarios we could throw out there with out giving up a pick this year.

He's great against the run, but questionable at times in coverage.

I Agree, but I would try to resign him because I believe his covverage has gotten better and he is an enforcer ...

True, but not a lot of safeties are great at both... which is why we need a ball hawking FS and a couple good corners to cover the pass coverage...

The Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers have expressed interest in trading for New England Patriots backup quarterback Ryan Mallett, though a deal seems unlikely at this point, the Boston Herald reported today.

In December, the Boston Globe linked Mallett, 24, to the Browns as a potential trade target partly because of General Manager Mike Lombardi’s relationship with Patriots coach Bill Belichick. The Patriots picked the 6-foot-6, 245-pound Mallett in the third round (No. 74 overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft. Stuck behind Tom Brady, he has never started a regular-season game and has only thrown four passes.

The Browns have made it clear they will try to acquire someone to compete with incumbent starting quarterback Brandon Weeden, 29, for the top spot on the depth chart.

Their options, though, continue to dwindle.

New Orleans Saints free-agent quarterback Chase Daniel agreed to a three-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported today. Matt Moore re-signed with the Miami Dolphins last week, and restricted free-agent Brian Hoyer recently received a second-round tender offer from the Arizona Cardinals. The Browns don’t have a second-round draft pick this year because they forfeited it by selecting wide receiver Josh Gordon last summer in the supplemental draft, so they’re out of the mix for Hoyer.

Former Browns quarterback Derek Anderson remains a possible free-agent target. Adam Caplan of TheSidelineView.com tweeted today that he heard a rumor last month at the NFL Scouting Combine about the Browns eventually signing Anderson.

Anderson, 29, had his best NFL season and went to the Pro Bowl in 2007, when new Browns coach Rob Chudzinski was the offensive coordinator during a previous tour in Cleveland. Chudzinski spent the past two seasons as the offensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers, and Anderson served as their backup quarterback.

The 6-foot-6, 230-pound Anderson used Facebook in January to flirt with the possibility of returning to the Browns. However, his departure from Cleveland was ugly.
After the Browns released Anderson on March 9, 2010, he ripped Browns fans in an e-mail to the News-Herald.

“The fans are ruthless and don't deserve a winner,” Anderson wrote then. “I will never forget getting cheered when I was injured.

“I know at times I wasn't great. I hope and pray I'm playing when my team comes to town and [we] roll them.”

Jason La Canfora CBS Sports speculated today that the Browns could be interested in Kevin Kolb, 28, if the Cardinals let him go. He also mentioned the Browns and New York Jets as options for Jason Campbell, 31, if he doesn’t re-sign with the Chicago Bears.

1. These are just BOZO's Speculated on absolutely not one shred of evidence or source.

2. Ok yes, we all heard that Lombardi was going to trade our #6 pick to the Patriots for Mallet...If he did think that - BANNER HIT HIM IN THE HEAD with his Cane.

That was the only thing remotely looking as a source of us interested.

3. The BOZO in BOZO fashion here the words Competition n think we don't want Weeden n want to bring in another starter...if that was so we would have made some inquiry for Alex Smith. I don't think we even Sniffed. We heard DA from DA. How I come to say these are Bozo's being Bozo...the thought that OH NO the Browns are Crushed cause CHASE DANIELS signed with the Chiefs??? Moore w/Dolphins...Hoyer w/Zona???

Well maybe the competition is w/Colt n Lewis??? Just who is Chase Daniels to be THE COMPETITION Just Bozo's being Bozos

Possibly the competition reference could be from the draft...hopefully not at #6 Assume only Geno can be considered there.

Like Emanuel in 3rd...that was before the combine...now they all move him up boards which means NFL guys probably had him higher on theirs.

Like Glennon if there in the 3rd. But I would assume the competition would be quick vs. a rookie...n they would be groomed. But then again...I see us staying pat. Lets just trade all our QBs like the Bills n go for the Overall #1 pick in 2014.

Front office still interested in Ryan Mallett: Cleveland Browns Insider

By Mary Kay Cabot, The Plain Dealer
on March 12, 2013 at 11:18 PM, updated March 13, 2013 at 7:44 AM

BEREA, Ohio -- The Browns were one of two teams that inquired about trading for Patriots quarterback Ryan Mallett Tuesday, according to a report. The other team was Tampa Bay.

Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald reported that the two clubs expressed interest in acquiring the former third-round pick out of Arkansas, but that a deal was unlikely at this time.

A source told The Plain Dealer last week that the Browns would likely check in on Mallet (6-7, 253), but another source said Patriots coach Bill Belichick would be reluctant to deal him.

But the Boston Globe recently reported that the Patriots would be willing to part with him now that starting QB Tom Brady has been signed to a blockbuster $60 million deal. The paper reported it would take at least a second-round pick to get Mallett.

The Browns will have to get creative if they're serious about getting him, because they don't have a second-rounder this year after using it to take Josh Gordon in the supplemental draft last year. They'd most likely have to give up their third-rounder this year and perhaps their second-rounder next year.

Groves to visit: Cardinals free agent linebacker Quentin Groves will visit the Browns and a few other teams, according to NFL.com. The Plain Dealer reported last week that the Browns were targeting Groves.

Groves, who played for Browns defensive coordinator Ray Horton last season, had four sacks in seven starts, mostly at left outside linebacker. He was a second-round pick of the Jaguars out of Auburn in 2008. He'd play outside in Horton's scheme.

Cribbs narrows it down: Browns free agent receiver/returner Josh Cribbs had it narrowed down to two teams as of late last night: the Patriots and Cardinals, according to a source.

Earlier, the 49ers were also in the mix, but the best offers are coming from New England and Arizona.

Cribbs wanted to stay with the Browns, but they remain uninterested in re-signing him. . . . No word yet on Browns kicker Phil Dawson.

Tight ends: The Browns were in the hunt for Titans tight end Jared Cook before he signed a five-year deal with the Rams. The Dolphins were also in the mix.

With Cook off the board, the Browns might turn their attention to Raiders tight end Brandon Myers, who had 79 catches for 806 yards last season. Myers is a player the Browns called about during the three-day legal tampering period. Another good tight end still available is the Jets' Dustin Keller.

Extra points: As of early Tuesday evening, the Browns had not yet contacted the agent for Steelers cornerback Keenan Lewis. . . . Adam Caplan of Sirius XM radio said he heard rumblings at the NFL Combine that Cleveland was interested in bringing in former Browns quarterback Derek Anderson, who spent the past two seasons in Carolina with Rob Chudzinski. . . . Jason LaCanfora speculates the Browns might be interested in quarterback Jason Campbell. . . . A source told The Plain Dealer the Browns have some interest in Cowboys linebacker Victor Butler.

OK I haven't seen it anywhere posted...so I will bring it up....

The Bills released Ryan Fitzpatrick....I don't know about you guys...but I think I would rather have him come in and compete against Weeden than Mallet who is #1 a big question mark and #2 we would have to give up draft picks for.

Is the guy perfect??? By no means...but ha has started for several years is very smart and could probably help us out quite a bit in spot starts and in a back up role...

It's been posted in the "cuts" thread I believe, to which everyone's reply was "NO" lol...

I'm not a fan of Ryan. At all... perhaps a marginal increase over Weeden, perhaps a marginal decrease. In either fashion, at what risk is he and how much is he demanding? If it's anything even remotely close to pricey, we turn our heads and run. If not, we "consider" turning our heads and running lol!

Fitz isn't a downfield passer, so, if that is what we want to do, then he doesn't really fit.

Not saying I'd want Fitzgerald but I watched a few Buffalo games last year and their OL was awful. Every time I saw them play he was under heavy pressure a big chunk of the time.

That's surprising given they only gave up 30 sacks all year (10th-best in the league) and were 6th in rushing offense.

OK I understand some of the concerns with Fitz...I really do....

However, I do think the positives(smarts, experience, etc) far out weigh the negatives....

the biggest negative being....LOOK AT WHAT ELSE IS OUT THERE!!!! LOL

His arm is strong ..."enough"...and if Weeds can put him in the backup role...so much the better..and again...is there ANYONE out there who is going to give Weeds competition??? Mallett??? Who really knows what this kid has? And as stated before...we have to give up draft picks for him as well... Anyone else??? DA...No thank you..been there...done that...already Burnt the T-Shirt.....then Who???

Someone mentioned Buffalo's Oline....Buffalo's OLine was just starting to come together. I mean they basically scrapped it and rebuilt it right in front of him...I don't know how much He was affected by them and how much He affected the Oline...But I do know Our Oline could probably help him.

I still think he is the best option available this year...draft included.

Ideal??? not on your life....But...they wanted competition...this is the only guy this year that will be CLOSE to giving it to Weeden...

just sayin

if he's cheap enough and our FO thinks he's better than Colt (or just as good and cheaper), then sure, why not. but, that's as far as I will go with any hope on him.
