The Browns have reached an agreement in principle on a five-year deal with free-agent outside linebacker Paul Kruger, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.
The deal is expected to be worth about $40 million, Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reported.
Kruger, 27, is one of the top-rated pass rushers in this year’s free-agent class. The 6-foot-4, 270-pound Kruger had nine sacks during the 2012 regular season and 4½ in the playoffs while helping the Baltimore Ravens win the Super Bowl.
In four seasons with the Ravens, Kruger compiled 69 tackles and 15 ½ sacks. A second-round pick (No. 57 overall) in the 2009 draft, Kruger has started only seven games in his career, including six this past season.
Still, he is coming off a breakout season and will fill a dire need for the Browns. The organization entered free agency with about $47.5 million in salary-cap space, the most in the NFL, and was on a mission to acquire a rush linebacker capable of helping the team adjust from a 4-3 system to new defensive coordinator Ray Horton’s 3-4, multi-front scheme.

Best of luck Paul Kruger. Really hope this signing works out. I definitely prefer him over Avril, and we're going to need him to play well next year
Kruger and Sheard though, a dynamic duo of fury!

5 yr 40 million is actually a good deal from my perspective. I was expecting at least 10 million +. Joe Banner gets an A from me on this signing.
Go Browns!!

$8mil/year for Kruger sounds a ton better than $12mil/year for him.

Good sign. I hope we are getting more 3-4 LBs.

I'm happy ..... especially since probably the most that hits our cap this year is $8 million .... leaving us still $40 million to work with. We can do a lot of damage with that.

Ok now lets get Cook, add a safety, and get Milliner in the Draft.

We got to spend around 25mil more - we can spend around 39 more to reach the cap.
Good first signing...a lot cheaper than we were led to believe.

For sure, Keenan Lewis and Ellerbe would be really nice.
Mix in a pass catching TE like Keller or Cook, and we're set to go

FYI from Cleveland.com:
ProFootballFocus.com ranked Kruger as the sixth-best of any 3-4 outside linebacker, and his 12.2 Pass Rushing Productivity was the highest at his position. He also led the Ravens with 55 pressures in 2012, while no other Ravens linebacker had more than 21.

Well, that's one LB down..... two more to go. Hoping we trade Sheard for a 2nd somehow. He just doesn't fit opposite Kruger.

Well Kruger plays SOLB.
Sheard played the strong side the last two years and was uncomfortable with playing on the weak side.
This to me signals the end of Jabaal Sheard.
Oh well,
He's a good young talented player.
I hope they can get something good for him.

Scott was 29 when he left the Ravens, Kruger is 27. Scott also plays on the inside while Kruger plays on the outside.
I get the comparison because they both left the Ravens, but that's where the similarities stop.

Wasn't crazy about Kruger at 12M but I like this signing at 8M per. Plus it's probably backloaded. We have more than enough money to take a legit run at Ellerbe & Cook now. I say we do it!!

Read an article saying he had a major back injury at the start of last season. Could that be a concern going forward???

With the Eagles dumping NA today I have the feeling they will take Milliner ahead of us. We will need a linebacker opposite of Kruger unless we pick another one up in FA. I figure since we filled one OLB position we will address the other OLB at #6. But we shall see.

See, this is what I worry about. Sheard seemed much better as a LDE then RDE. The footwork involved in a switch is different I guess.
One of the two guys is going to have to switch........

Considering he had his best season following the injury, I would say no.

With Groves in for a visit, he might be the one to go opposite.

It's been mentioned the Eagles may go hard for Revis now.

Held...they had Sheard penciled in at the WOLB the entire time...Gocong was penciled in at the SOLB spot...so he is the one on the hot seat...although it might have him go to SILB along side Kruger n DQ WILB along with out #6 pick moving Sheard to just Pass Rusher which wouldn't be too bad.

they both had 1 really productive year with Baltimore. the difference also is that Scott followed that year up with 2 okay years before leaving while Kruger is leaving right away.

Intoducing for The Cleveland Browns, Quarterback Deshawn "The Predator" Watson. He will also be the one to choose your next head coach.

I certainly hope that Kruger is currently our best pass rusher.
If we can get an early 2nd for Sheard, then I think we have to do it (Arizona?). We have to find pieces that fit well into our scheme.

Huh??
I'd hate to see us trade Sheard, but if we do, we damn well better get a 1st.. He's played like a 1st round guy.. He's worth it.
