Browns | Chris Ogbonnaya re-signed Wed, 13 Mar 2013 14:11:00 -0700 The Cleveland Browns have re-signed free-agent RB Chris Ogbonnaya to a two-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed. LinkI wonder if he'll get a bigger roll behind Hardesty. Is he in the mix for PR/KR?

I like him. He's got some wheels and is fairly shifty and elusive. Beyond that, he's done nothing but work hard and quietly stay the course. He earned his contract.

Actually, going back and looking at what Norv does with his backs, this guy could catch a lot of balls in this offense. He does do that very well. Look at what he did with Sproles, Tolbert, and Ronnie Brown last year. None of those guys were starters, yet still caught a bunch of balls.

A great depth signing. Works his butt off and fills a role. Tough to be too upset about this.
I am unfamiliar with this feeling of optimism

He is a worker. If Norv calls a better game for backs, he might be seeing a bunch more success. I thought he did okay and has worked hard for his props. Respect him and hope this might be a real breakout season for him (and a lot of us, for that matter).

I'm okay with this signing. Obi really has never done much for me. Nothing to really make me dislike the guy, he's just never really impressed me. And there's so many RBs in football. I mean, just on this team, we still have Hardesty and Jackson? One is gonna go
Obi's a good blocker, and that's what sets him up on 3rd down I guess. Funny how that can be such a big factor for a RB, but it really is. Become a good pass blocker and be shifty/catch the ball, and you have a leg up on so many other RBs

Okay, so we're looking at Richardson, Hardesty, and Obi. Obi's blocking is better than Jackson, but I do feel that Jackson was a better runner/receiver. Jackson's a bit older though, and he has an injury history.
I dunno, still looking for a RB late in the draft like UDFA guy who might push Obi for that role. Doubt there's much guaranteed money in his deal

I thought Jackson was supposed to be an awesome 3rd-down back? I understand that it's hard to call him good when he's constantly hurt, but the previous regime brought him in to be that guy.
Oh well, I'm not going to get worried about a guy that drew a paycheck and never really played for us.

So Obi, Hardesty and Trent looks to be the official array of RB's we will have at our disposal.
I like Obi, good hands outta the backfield and a credible third down back. Isn't going to mow anyone over, but will dance around them and, IMO, has hit the holes pretty decent. Can improve his pass blocking a bit.

I really don't know what Chud/Norv wants...haven't heard much spoken regarding the RBs. I really don't know of a NFL coach that wants a RB who doesn't catch.
Hardesty had a tough string of games where he had drops. I still say a good portion of those were below his knees. But that was in 2011. 2012 I dont think he got many chances (at catching - 2 rec.) but I remember him doing well n not dropping the ball like he did in 2011. So in 2012 the #2 got 2 att. at catching. I would suspect we want the backup to carry the load if Trent goes down. I don't know...for me that would be Hardesty. Its good to have an opinion.

I thought he was our best back in blitz pickup last year and he has shown good hands and he can run the ball. Excellent 3rd down back to have in the stable. I see Hardesty as what he was last year as a #2 back. I liked Jackson but really, OGB was better in that role as the 3rd down back than Jackson.
He isn't your typical speedy 3rd down scat back but he can get it done in open space. Full back is now the big issue.

Trent wasn't that bad...but Ogb is our best Pass blocker n is smart in his releases as the check down. I do think that Trent is a 3 down back.
I know LAST year with Shurmur/Childress they used Ogb as the 3rd down back to give Trent a blow here n there on passing downs. But again I don't have a clue how Chud/Norv is going to want to utilize them. OGB is what I would class as "Solid" not great but does everything well!

As an aside. I was screaming for Hardesty all of last season. I'm not convinced Richardson is the better back, ...but he was playing injured the entire time Those 3 make a pretty solid group, no complaints from me. Shouldn't really have any issues at the position this season besides possible injuries.

I am good with the move. I think TRich, Hardesty, and Oby make a nice group. Bring in a young kid to maybe make the team or sit on the practice squad if somebody gets hurt...I am good with the group.
As for FB, I am not all that big on fullbacks, but I think Smelly will be the guy. Heck, Billy Winn is pretty quick, he could probably make a pretty darn good FB. I am sure he can catch a ball lobbed in to the flat, which is a pretty typical FB catch.

It can't be that easy. Look at the problems that Marecic had doing that

haha, over the years you've made it clear you'd rather anybody be a fullback but a fullback.
In fact, I think you'd be happy if we lined up with one QB, two WRs, one RB, one LT, and 6 OGs.

Norv will find a way to use Smelley, he runs good routes and catches the ball well. He has always found a way to use the fullback in the pass game.

I believe so as well. Now that Heckert isn't around, we won't have to sooth his ego and keep marching Owen out there.

Agreed! There was a lot of negativity on the other board, particularly with Hardesty, but that now seems to have changed. If they can stay healthy, they could be very good...

1. Smelley will have a role if Chud/Norv utilizes an H-Back instead of a FB. It would be a new thing I think for Norv.

Could actually mean something except for one thing. Heckert's first move in the offseason after Mangini got fired was to sign Tyler Clutts FB who personally I think was the guy who got away not Vickers...oh n who has replaced Vickers n Casey in Houston. But Heckert signed: Clutts, Marecic n Smelley...so I fail to see the EGO thing as he brought in all 3 - I think he left it to the coaching staff to decide which one was best for their O...Heckert thought ALL THREE could contribute and that is why he got them all. So I don't understand that ego logic..surely not over a 4th round pick comparatively to 7th or UDFA. He brought them all here!

At this point can we just blame all horrible decisions on Shurmur? I know he probably didn't make many personnel decisions, but it's just much easier to blame him

Hard to tell Who What n Where..for sure. In hindsight I don't think Shurmur had much power. I think Heckert respected him to give him choices.
But in case of FB...Heckert brought all 3 onto the team...without any costing that much...sorry 4th round pick is not what makes or breaks teams. So he gave his buddy Shurmur a bone...here Shurm old buddy - You Choose... lol
Come on its FB...who will gain or lose EGO over choosing the FB JMHPosition But yes its all Ensign Pulver's fault!

Cutting Clutts & keeping Marecic was a class A blunder. I wonder how much better the run game would have been the past two years had the situation been reversed.

In terms of successful run plays with a h-back play call, it surely couldn't be anything but BETTER than Owen had provided. Alex Smith played fullback better... oh, and he caught the ball too =\

EO, we go back a long way.....but I totally disagree. IMO 3rd and 4th round selections are exactly what make or break teams.
Any boob should be able to make a decent 1st or 2nd round pick. The 3rd and 4th rounders is where the cream and curd become equal. Those 2 rounds IMO are where legends are made and others lose their jobs.....unless of course you have the real boob who manages to blow 1st and 2nd rounders.
3rd and 4th round picks are vital. You have to hit some of those if you expect to be good. Those are the rounds more often than not you get a "steal". Those are the rounds that the good evaluators find the gems.....after that, it's pretty much luck except for the kickers since that is where they usually go.
